Melissa was too tired to argue, and part of her didn’t want to face the guilt trip that would follow if she stayed home. Once at the party, Melissa felt out of place, surrounded by noise and people she didn’t know. She wandered around until she found a quiet spot on the second floor, where she could finally breathe and smoke her blunt. Just as she began to relax, someone entered her space—Shauna Shipman. Neither of them said much at first, but the silence between them was comfortable, almost as if they were meant to meet there.
