Ultimately, not even the King in Yellow can predict which timeline he'll find himself in. With infinite choices at hand, and unpredictable variables such as his vessel and the knight, truly anything can happen.
Which is how he's ended up here, with his vessel claimed yet refusing to surrender, the knight rushing to the vessel's side like the loyal servant he is, and all three of them being held captive within a facility supervised by people who intend to exploit them for their knowledge.
