He wouldn't say that they're friends, really. They're not quite just acquaintances either; the more he thinks about it, Eren's not sure how to describe their relationship. They sort of... tolerate each other, in different ways.
But yeah, the more he thinks about it (and he does think about it quite often), Eren thinks that he'd like for them to be friends.

Eren, a young mermaid, meets his dark and intriguing mate, Levi, for the first time by the edge of a large lake in the middle of the wetland forests. Hanji and her team of biologists hide nearby to document the elusive merfolk and their interactions.
Or that one merfolk au where Levi (merman/male/dominant) and Eren (mermaid/arguably still male but in the submissive role here) are a pair of mates living in the wild, meeting for the first time by the lake that Levi inhabits.

Summary
Quite frankly, Eren just wanted a mind-blowing, out of this universe fairy-tale to write on for his mythology report. It was a personal mission to impress Levi with his deep analysis and diligent research.
What he got was a physical form of the fabled man, ‘Humanity’s Strongest’, emerging right out of the book and looking awfully identical to his TA.
