Chapter Text
Fukuzawa looked down at the boy who was sitting in Mori’s chair. His steel eyes twitched for a moment. A boy. A child. Who was obviously not Mori. Was sitting in the doctor’s chair. Who the hell was he? His small body looked lanky even for his age. Fukuzawa knew kids at that point were still supposed to have quite a bit of fat on them. Yet this boy looked like a cooked noodle. His hair was shaggy and brown and fell over his blank face. However, huge brown eyes stared up at him; well one brown eye. The other one was bandaged as though someone had thrown a rock at his face. Most of the kid’s body was bandaged. He even had a sling on his small arm.
Was Mori fixing him up, Fukuzawa thought to himself? He was stunned that the boy had been so quiet the entire time. If he even is a boy. The child was right in that age where it was still hard to tell. His soft features did not help that much.
“Ah! Fukuzawa! I had no idea that you got here.” Mori said with that ever excited voice, walking in from the restroom that was off to the side. Of course he would have been in the bathroom. For all Fukuzawa knew, the black haired doctor had been watching him have a staring contest with the child. Mori walked over to the table and fiddled with some of the papers. All the while, the child blinked a few times in Fukuzawa’s direction before he turned.
“Mori.” It was a boy… Maybe. The doctor turned to look at the bandaged child.
“Dazai I forgot you were even here.”
“He won’t be picking me up until later. He told you that. That is why I am here to get bandaged up.”
“I know that. But you know that I can be a little air headed.” Fukuzawa watched as Mori held the conversation with the boy as though he were talking to someone his own age. It was jarring to say the least, considering the vast intelligence of the good doctor.
“Well next time write it down. Unless you can’t read your own horrible hand writing.” Well that was biting. Fukuzawa was startled. The kid did not look like the one to say something like that, but Mori did not look surprised. If anything he looked proud. With a sudden movement that only Fukuzawa knew he had, Mori grabbed the boy and picked him up, holding him on his hip.
Placed like that, Fukuzawa nearly let his jaw drop.
This kid, Dazai, looked like Mori’s son. It was striking.
However the moment was broken when one of the boss’s men walked in. He was an older gentleman dressed in black with a long scarf. His grey hair was slicked back as he smoked, causing the room to fill with the stuff.
“I am here to pick him up doctor.”
“Hirotsu! Good to see you. Do I really have to give him away?” Mori was dramatic as ever as he rubbed his cheek against Dazai’s bandaged one. He squeezed the boy which was obviously annoying to Dazai.
“You will see him again soon enough.” Fukuzawa looked back and forth between the three of them before his eyes landed on Dazai. Judging by how bandaged up he was, Hirotsu’s statement would be correct. Mori finally put Dazai down and made a sad noise as the boy walked across the room.
At the last second, as he was following Hirotsu out, Dazai looked over his shoulder. To Fukuzawa’s surprise, Dazai stuck his tongue out at Mori. The boy had been so calm, if not a little biting, that such a childish action seemed out of place. However when he turned back to perhaps what he called his partner, he just frowned. Of course Mori would be sticking his tongue back out at the boy. He really worked with a child.
