Chapter Text

“Mister, er… Kakyoin?” a teacher calls as Kakyoin collects Jolyne and makes for the school gates. “Do you have a moment?”

“Sure,” Kakyoin says, and smiles easily at her. “Jolyne isn’t in trouble again, is she?”

The teacher smiles back. “Not at all. I was just wondering if you were available to help out at the school fête tomorrow. Jolyne’s other uncle already promised to bake something and I just wanted to extend the invitation to the rest of Jolyne’s family.”

Kakyoin’s smile disappears. “He what.”

“I’m sorry, did I do something-” the teacher starts, but Kakyoin has already whipped out his phone.

“Jotaro!” he says. “Jotaro, wait, don’t hang up, Polnareff is cooking.”

Jolyne grabs his other hand and looks up at the teacher.

“Uncle Polnareff isn’t allowed to cook,” she informs her. “Uncle Polnareff is really bad at cooking. He set Uncle Avdol on fire once.”

“Three times.” Kakyoin corrects her absently, pocketing the phone. “He’s set Jotaro on fire at least twice.”

“I’m so sorry,” he says to the teacher. “Can we reschedule this conversation? We have to go. Jotaro dismantled Polnareff’s kitchen after last time and he might try to use one of our apartments.”

(Jotaro fumbles his way out of a pile of paperwork, scattering samples as he goes, and sprints for his car. His co-workers watch in awe as he seems to glitch through an entire corridor.)

Kakyoin screeches to a halt outside the building and makes it up to his apartment just in time to see Polnareff fiddling with his stove, and then Jotaro takes him out with a flying tackle and saves them all from a fiery death.

Jolyne races up the stairs behind him and sticks her head in through the door. “Dad, you saved us,” she says. “Again.”

Kakyoin sits on his living room floor and puts his head between his knees.

“I think you guys are overreacting,” Polnareff says, muffled underneath Jotaro’s perpetually soggy lab coat. “Also, I think I’m suffocating.”

“Good,” Jotaro grunts.
