The Three Times Jeon Jungkook Almost Punched Someone In The Face and The One Time He Didn't Have To

Summary:

Being in love with your best friend freaking sucks.

It sucks because you get to see them everyday, get to touch them all the time, get to be with them, but just not in the way you want to. It sucks because you know you're a walking cliché. Loving your best friend is as well known and as comedically used as fart jokes have been throughout centuries.

Having your best friend be the same sex as you and also painfully gay also adds to the suckiness of the situation (look, Jungkook knows that not a word, but just roll with him, okay. Not everyone can be as poetic as Kim Namjoon.)

Then, throw a sculptured Greek God of a boyfriend into the mix and you've got one atrociously baked 'fuck my life' cupcake decorated and ready for tasting.

1.

Ever since Jungkook was young, his father had always told him that he was too brave for his tiny timberland boots.

Jungkook wouldn't have called in bravery, Jungkook would call it violence and his hyung would call it "fucking justice". So, naturally, having an older brother who spent most of his time either showing Jungkook how to fight or how garden-sometimes simultaneously-(his hyung is a man of many skills), the younger Jeon grew up not knowing whether to sew the seeds of life with his hands or crush them.

His mother did not agree, and never would, with violence. She said that bravery and violence could never be placed in the same sentence. That violence was a choice and bravery was a mind-set, that they were neither similar nor compatible.

Silently, Jungkook agreed. Violence was a choice, but, as he soon found out, anger was not. And, despite the fact that neither of them were similar (one being an act and the other a feeling), they seemed to go together as happily as blood and a stab wound.

Unfortunately for Jungkook, the day he discovered this, also happened to be the first time he wanted to (and almost did) punch someone in the face.

"Jungkook, I don't know how many times I have to tell you this, but you need to be more realistic," his teacher sighed, her shoulders dropping like he was the weight settled between them (he hoped it hurt) and tapped her pencil on his desk. "You can't sing, dance and draw. You need to choose one."

The nine year old Jungkook stared up at her, eyes wide with annoyance. "Why?" He asked simply, to which she sighed again.

"Because you don't have the time," she said, crossing her arms in exasperation. Honestly, she'd just had an argument with her boyfriend again and her goldfish had died. Can you blame her for being a dream crusher? "And no one else will want to do all those things with you."

"Then I'll do it alone," Jungkook cried, resolute. He didn't need any of the other kids, he could do it all himself. His hyung always told him that if he wanted something done, he had to do it alone. That other people just dragged you down.

The teacher glared at him and began to make a "tut tut" noise between her teeth. Jungkook frowned. "You can't do it alone, Jungkook," she said slowly, in a patronising tone. He was nine, not three, why did she treat him like a child? "It's a group project. You need to pick at least one partner."

Scowling, Jungkook stands up from his desk and huffs a small "fine" before leaving the room without being dismissed. He could get into trouble, but he doesn't care. That lady was mean and mean people got what they deserved one way or another (at least that's what his hyung told him.)

"She made me miss half my lunch," he muttered to himself, walking down the corridor, head down. "Stupid lady," he glanced side to side to see if anyone had heard, luckily for him, no one seemed to be around. He didn't want to get into trouble for no good reason.

The playground was a cacophony of noise and activity and Jungkook hated it. It wasn't like he hated noise, he liked the right kind of noise, like the music his dad listens to in their car and the sound of his hyung laughing. It was the people. He hated them all.

(Really, Jungkook hated them because none of them wanted to be his friend. He doesn't like to think about the times he'd cried himself to sleep because of the way they'd laugh at him and make fun of his brother for his tattoos and piercings. He wouldn't tell you about that. If you asked, he'd say he hated them because they were all ugly and he hated ugly people and their stupid faces because he's nine and that's what nine year olds say.)

Sometimes, Jungkook would sit on the swings at the back of the playground and see how high he could jump, but the set of swings had someone on them and he didn't want to play with other people, so he headed to the oak tree in the corner.

However, this spot seemed to be occupied too.

There was a group of boys crowding around someone that Jungkook could not see. He did not know the boys, neither did he want to, but he stopped and watched for a moment, curiosity getting the better of him, and noticed that they were laughing and jabbing their fingers at whoever their victim was.

"I heard that his dad liked girls and boys," one of them drawled.

"That's disgusting!"

"Yeah, my dad told me people like that needed to be fixed and that they shouldn't be allowed to have children."

They tightened their circle, a mixture of disgust and twisted humour on their faces. "My parents said that the children of people like that are born sick too. So, he's probably just ask horrible as his dad."

Something inside Jungkook was stirring. The words they were saying didn't make sense to him. His brother talked to him about people who liked boys and girls before and said they were no different to anyone else. And these boys were saying the opposite.

"I wonder why his mum ever married someone like that. Maybe she was ill too?"

The boys nudged the boy between them with their foot and Jungkook heard a quiet whimper from inside the circle. Something about the noise made his stomach drop and he snapped into action.

Striding forward, he pushed the two closest boy's away from each other and broke through their circle. He tried to put on his scariest face (he practiced it in the mirror sometimes) and noticed the smallest boy he had ever seen in his life crouched on the floor.

"Leave him alone!" he yelled, voice slightly shaky, whether with nerves or anger, he didn't know. The small boy glanced up, looking at Jungkook with big surprised eyes, and Jungkook watched him for a second and then turned back to the others.

He watched as they snickered. "Jeon," one of them said, frowning. "Go away, this has nothing to do with you."

Jungkook shook his head. "This has nothing to do with you. You don't know his dad or him, so why are you being horrible to him?" He didn't wait for a response. "It's because you're all sad and ugly and have nothing better to do with your time than be stupid."

He held out one hand to the small boy, who looked at him in question and then slowly took his hand. It was tiny and Jungkook could close his fingers around it entirely, he'd never been able to do that before. Pulling the boy gently to his feet, Jungkook made to walk away from the group along with the boy. They were almost out of the circle when one of the group piped up.

"Jeon is only helping him because his brother is a messed up as Park's dad. Maybe they should both be locked up together." It was like Jungkook saw red. His mother said that violence was a choice, but Jungkook didn't think, his arm moved on its own accord. How dare that boy talk about his big brother? How dare he-

A gentle hand lay on his arm before it could smash into the boy's face. Jungkook breathed and spun. Small Boy watched him silently and shook his head slightly. Jungkook didn't know why, how could a nine year old know, but for some reason he breathed. He breathed and let the smaller pull him away.

Later that afternoon, Jungkook was sat with the boy on the swings. They had been swaying in silence for about fifteen minutes with only the creaking of the old metal to keep them company, until Small Boy coughed and Jungkook turned to see him smile at him. The boy's eyes crinkled at the corners and Jungkook felt his own lips tug upwards too.

"I can sing and dance," the boy said, voice high.

"What?" Jungkook asked, slightly confused.

The boy glanced at the muddy floor and said awkwardly, "I heard you and that teacher talking. She wasn't very nice. But, I could be your partner."

Jungkook tilted his head to the side slightly. "But you're not in my class." The boy shrugged.

"I'm not in your year either, but I'll still work with you."

"Why?"

Jimin giggled and Jungkook's stomach fluttered. "Because you're nice. I like you."

Finally, Jungkook smiled properly, bunny teeth and all.

"Can you really sing?"

The boy hopped off the swing and wiped his hands on his trousers. He pulled his back straight and began to sing.

It was that day that Jungkook could add a noise to his list.

His dad's music, his brothers laugh and Park Jimin's voice.

He had hated Kim Taehyung when they'd first met.

Jimin had just moved up to high school, which left Jungkook painfully alone and he was deeply aware of the fact that, although he would stay solitary, Jimin was bound to make friends with his happy personality and pretty voice. So, when Jimin started talking about a Tae, Jungkook immediately vowed to hate him. This was the boy who would steal his best friend from him, because he always knew Jimin deserved a better best friend and Taehyung sounded perfect for him.

They met for the first time and Jungkook scowled his way through the entire event. He left with Jimin and mentally told himself that Taehyung was awful, an abomination to humanity.

But, Tae had a way with people, Jungkook was sure it was his incessant annoying that wore people down and made them like him and, therefore, it became a task to stay hateful towards the boy. Especially when Tae, Jimin and him all met up for lunch, except Jimin couldn't make it, so the two had sat across a table and Jungkook had listened awkwardly as Tae had talked about his love for puppies and anything small.

It happened two more times until Jungkook realised that Tae had not even been inviting Jimin, that he'd wanted to spend time alone with Jungkook. It then only took a few more cookies bought by the elder ("a cookie for my Jungkookie") for Jungkook to admit that they were, in fact, friends and Tae had been around ever since.

"I swear, if they've sold out of little cat shaped cupcakes again, I'm gonna flip my shit."

Taehyung was driving towards the small cafe that the three of them always had lunch at on a Thursday. He fixed his eyes on the road, but Jungkook could see he was completely serious (a rare occurrence for the elder).

"I don't get you," Jungkook said from his spot in the backseat. Jimin always got to ride shotgun ("I'm your hyung, Kookie") and that left Jungkook to feel like a little kid in the back. "You love animals, but you're excited to devour a cake replica of one. Isn't that a little sadistic?"

"Maybe," Tae sighed, Jungkook could practically hear him drooling. "But they taste so good."

"You maniac," Jungkook chuckled, smiling as he heard Jimin laugh too. Something about Jimin's laugh always caused a stirring of emotion inside him lately. In fact, a lot of things about Jimin affected him in some way. His laugh, his eyes, the way he curled his tiny hands into fists whenever someone made fun of him (mainly Taehyung and himself) about his height. Jimin made him feel simultaneously happy and in pain.

Jimin just made him feel.

And, it did nothing other than make Jungkook uncomfortable. Whenever he felt that stirring he would look away from his best friend and pretend like it didn't feel like his heart was going to burst.

The cafe was quiet, as usual. That's one of the reasons they liked it. Tae liked it for its cupcakes, Jimin liked it because their seats were comfortable ("it's like they're giving you a hug") and Jungkook liked it because he could go there to clear his head in the quiet, away from the noise of his life.

"Mmmmaaaaahhhh," Tae groaned, taking a large bite of his cupcake, decapitating the kitten in one swallow. The hole of his mouth could be seen, remains of cake sloshing around between his teeth. Jimin grimaced.

"Tae Tae, that's gross," he whined, placing his hot chocolate down on the table. "Chew with your mouth closed."

Fluttering his eyes and making kissy faces at Jimin, Taehyung said "Anything for you, my little mochi," and continued to eat, this time with a little more grace.

Jimin bristled in his seat and turned to Jungkook. "Hey, were you planning on going to Seokjin hyung's party this weekend? I heard he has something he wants to tell us all."

Shoving in the last mouthful of cake, Tae laughed. "I swear, if he tells us that Namjoon hyung got him pregnant, then I better be the god father." At his two friends look of dismay, Tae raised his hands to his sides. "What? Children love me."

Shaking his head, Jungkook sighed. "However, I can see a massive flaw in our two hyungs having a child."

Jimin looked at Jungkook quickly, eyes wide. "Why? What's wrong with two men having a child?" He asked abruptly. "They could adopt."

Jungkook watched in confused shock. He hadn't meant it like that. He had no problem with two men having children, in fact anyone with children was secretly adorable to him. He'd always wanted a family himself. But, Jimin looked- Well, Jimin looked personally offended by Jungkook's comment. "I didn't mean it like that, hyung," he insisted. "Honestly, I just meant that Jin and Namjoon hyung aren't even together."

A snort emitted from Tae's nose and he wiped his hands on his jeans. "They so are," he said. "Have you seen the way that Namjoon hyung looks at him? It makes me want to puke."

Jimin smiled. "I think it's romantic."

And later that week he said the exact same thing.

"It's romantic," he protested, after Seokjin and Namjoon told everyone that they were, and had been for a while now, dating. While Jungkook and Tae had remained neutral (but really very happy for their friends) and Yoongi simply rolled his eyes like he'd known all along (which he totally had, he was totally the one who should be taking credit for them getting together anyway, the amount of secret work he put in to hook them up), it was Jimin and Hoseok who had made excited and inhuman squeals and hugged them both, wanting to know exactly how it had happened.

Now, after teasing from everyone else, Jimin was staring at the couple with both a fond and perhaps envious, smile on his face through the window from where he and Jungkook sat on a bench outside. "I wish someone would love me like that," he said, his words slightly slurred from the alcohol. He looked at Hoseok and Yoongi now, who were both sat together, Yoongi in the younger's lap, watching each other fondly. "Or like Yoongi hyung treats Hoseok hyung."

Jungkook watched Jimin and felt that thing again. Something about Jimin's words made him feel like he could fix the sadness behind them. That he could fill the role that Jimin needed filling. But, that was ridiculous, of course.

"You'll find someone, hyung," Jungkook said, shuffling closer. Jimin smiled and leant his head on Jungkook's shoulder and Jungkook would be lying if the closeness didn't cause his stomach to jump and his head to swirl (he was drunk, okay?) But he put his arm around him none of the less.

"You think so, Kookie?" Jimin muttered and Jungkook could feel the heat of this breath on his neck. Jungkook wondered briefly why he was noticing all these things about Jimin, but pushed it aside.

"Of course, Jiminie hyung. You'll find a pretty girlfriend. You're handsome and adorable." He wasn't blushing, really he wasn't. It was just the alcohol. The heat left his neck and Jungkook turned to see Jimin's eyes on him. He swallowed deeply and couldn't help but let his eyes drop down to his hyung's mouth. Those lips were wet with beer and Jungkook licked his own lips wondering what they tasted like.

"I don't think you're right, Kookie," Jimin mumbled, and Jungkook fought to get his mind under control, bringing his eyes back up to the elder's level.

"What do you mean?" Jungkook asked. Jimin was always insecure about the way he looked, though Jungkook never knew why. "You are handsome, hyung," trying for light heartedness he added. "Or did you just want me to say it twice because-"

"I'm gay."

Jungkook came to an abrupt stop. He pulled back slightly to get a better look at the other boy's face and saw how Jimin flinched when he did so. Jimin began to scramble for words. "I meant I wouldn't have a girlfriend because I like boys and I didn't know how you'd react, but I understand if you think it's weird and everything but I thought with your brother and you knew about my dad that you wouldn't-"

Jungkook wrapped his arms around Jimin and pulled him in for a hug, happy when he heard the older sigh in what was probably relief, laying his head on Jungkook's chest. When Jungkook thought about it, it wasn't that much of a surprise. He'd seen Jimin look at guys longer than girls and Jimin had never talked about crushes throughout high school, always hiding away from the topic. Really, Jungkook should have seen it coming. But, as he rested his own head on top of his best friend's, Jimin's hair tickling his nose, he wondered whether there was something else going on, something he should have noticed a long time ago, because when Jimin came out with those two words, Jungkook hadn't felt disgusted or even just okay with it. He'd felt hopeful.

Hopeful.

That sent him tumbling down a spiral of memories. Because Jimin was not the only one who didn't have crushes on pretty girls in high school and Jimin wasn't the only one who was able to appreciate men in a way he didn't appreciate women. But, this opened another door, because, though Jimin looked at the men around him, Jungkook's eyes never strayed far from his own hyung's. And when he looked at Tae, or Hoseok or Seokjin he didn't feel the way he felt when he looked at Jimin. He didn't feel that pain, that want , that emotion.

"Errr, Jungkookie?" Jimin said uncertainly. "I'm happy that you're cool with it and that we're hugging, but you're starting to squeeze me just a bit too hard. Struggling to breath here." And just like that, Jungkook knew.

His hands fell away from Jimin's body and he felt empty, like he'd just dropped a heavy weight that his body was used to, that his body wanted. When he looked at Jimin now, he saw him. Really saw him.His beautiful eyes and shiny hair and tiny hands that fit in his perfectly and button nose. But also his amazing cheekbones and flawless jawline and those lips...

Jimin was still talking, something about Jungkook being a "muscle pig" and "it isn't right for my dongaeng to be that much stronger than me," but Jungkook wasn't really hearing it. It was like, internally, he was having a break down. If you could record the sounds of his brain right now it would probably sound something like the entirety of the Seoul population all screaming, honking their horns and playing their music full blast all at once.

He had to get out of there.

"I really am happy for you, hyung," he forced our, trying to sound normal but pretty sure his voice sounded ten times deeper than normal. "But, you're drunk and if you keep drinking, you'll be worse in the morning. I should get you to bed."

Jimin nodded slightly, eyes dropping, like it had only just occurred to him how tired he was. "You're right, Kookie," he said, letting himself lean on the younger as they began to make their way up the stairs. Seokjin had a guest room and they all stayed in it often, so they knew the way. "You're so good to me. You're always there for me. You're like my guardian angel or something," he giggled and Jungkook felt the noise go right to his heart. "Can angels be as buff as you?"

Jungkook brought Jimin to the bed and helped his lie down, tucking the covers around his tiny body and watching as the older snuggled into the pillow, closing his eyes. It was almost painful how cute he looked.

"Goodnight, hyung," Jungkook whispered and began to make his way from the room.

"Kookie?" Jimin mumbled, turning over slightly to face the door. "Are you sure you don't mind? You know, with me being gay."

Pausing by the door, Jungkook almost smiled. "Of course not, hyung," he whispered. "You know I'll love you no matter what."

And, though he'd said it before, this time the words seemed to have a different meaning altogether.

An hour later found Jungkook hunched over on the floor, back pressed against the kitchen counter. He was trying to be quiet. He was pretty sure that everyone else was asleep. He'd seen Yoongi and Hoseok curled into each other on the sofa and Namjoon and Seokjin had gone upstairs half an hour ago. He hadn't seen Tae, but he was sure that the other boy was probably sleeping next to Jimin, clinging onto him like a koala does with a tree, as he so often does with the both of them.

But, Jungkook?

Jungkook is trying (and possibly succeeding) in a scientific experiment to see how many vodka shots it takes for the pain to go away. For you to stop feeling. He's not really sure how the experiment is going, anyway. He lost count around about five because he noticed a particularly comfortable looking piece of wood on the kitchen floor and decided to take residence there. In fact, he wasn't even using shot glasses anymore, just taking the odd gulp of the liquid straight from the bottle every now and then, savouring the way it burned as it went down his throat. It felt better than the sensation in his heart and the confusion in his head. But, it was okay, because everything was getting pretty fuzzy up there anyway. In fact, he was thinking about the rate at which a bee can fly without its wings setting on fire when he heard footsteps in the doorway. He let his head fall in its direction, bottle sloshing slightly and eyes lazily focusing on the figure.

"Oh, my little Kookie," a familiar voice sighed, genuinely sounding pained and Jungkook wondered whether there was a sale of it somewhere because it seems like everything was feeling it today. "What happened to you?" Taehyung stepped out the doorway and made his way over to Jungkook, plucking the bottle out of his hands.

"Hey!" Jungkook yelled, trying to stand up. He put his hand against the counter top and pushed himself upwards, handing slipping slightly, but managing to stay upright enough for him to make it. "I need that!"

Frowning, Tae let the liquid tip out of the bottle and down the sink and Jungkook watched it go angrily, upset that someone had taken his medicine away. "Jimin told you, didn't he?"

Through his sloshed thoughts, Jungkook caught an image of the tiny boy cocooned in a duvet and he felt his heart throb. It made him angry. "Yes, he told me and..." he paused, a quiet coherent thought pushing though the haze. "Wait, he-he told you? He told you before he told me?"

Taehyung sighed, leaning up against the table, rolled up sleeved arms acting as his rest. "I think he was nervous about telling you," Tae said gently. "You guys have been friends forever, so he didn't want to make you hate him. So, he told me a couple of days ago, I think to test the waters or something."

Sober Jungkook would have nodded in understanding, but this Jungkook, the one who's body was now 90% vodka felt pissed off. Why did Jimin not trust him? Why did Tae get to know his secrets instead of his own best friend? Unless- Unless he wasn't Jimin's best friend anymore. "You stole him from me," Jungkook said harshly, pointing a finger in what he thought was Tae's direction but was really slightly to the left. "He doesn't need me anymore because you stole him."

Taehyung put his hands up in surrender. "Whoa. Hold on, Kookie. You're drunk. Look, let's get you to bed." The elder made to put his arms around the younger boy, but Jungkook pushed him away, watching a Taehyung flinched as his back knocked into the table.

"No, you took him from me, Tae," he said, fists tight. "He doesn't need me anymore."

Watching him from a safe distance, Taehyung stepped away from the table and frowned. "You know that's not true, Kookie," Tae said slowly, edging slowly closer. "He loves you. I love you. We both love you." He felt it again, that twinge in his heart and he wanted to run from it. To pull it out of his chest and hurl it at the other boy.

"Love?" He yelled. "Why're you talking about love?"

It was like a light flicked on Tae's head. His eyes widened and a small smile came across his face. "Aww, my Kookie doesn't love me?" He asked in a mocking voice, like he was talking to a child. "Don't you love Jiminie and me too?"

Jungkook stuttered. "I- I don't-"

"It's okay," Tae said softly. It was one of those rare events when his voice was serious, when his face showed no hint of humour, but just the love he had for his friend. Love and a little bit of concern. "You don't have to tell me. I already know how you feel about Jimin."

It was like the world was ending. Jungkook was sure there was nothing worse than this.

"How I what?" He exclaimed, his inner confusion being replaced with anger. What was Tae even saying?

Taehyung came closer again, this time putting a hand on Jungkook's shoulder. "I know that you're in love with Jimin."

His fist was up by his side before Tae could even blink. He was gonna do it, he thought, he was gonna hit him. Because what Tae had said was ridiculous. He was totally pissed off of his head and what Tae had said was ridiculous. He was pissed because what Tae had said was ridiculous. Ridiculously true.

But, it couldn't be because Jimin was a boy and Jimin was his best friend and the only way to forget what Tae had said was to hit him and, the thing was, Tae knew he was gonna do it. Taehyung could see the hand raise and the fist clench and the confused anger in Jungkook's eyes, but he didn't flinch this time, he didn't even move his hand. He just looked him dead in the eyes and smiled. Not mockingly or jokingly like normal, but full of love and understanding. And it reminded Jungkook of the smile his brother used to give him when he talked about Jimin. Love and understanding.

Jungkook let a broken sob leave his mouth, hand dropping to his side, body crumpling to the ground. Tae's arms, of course, caught him before he was even close to the wooden floor. "I'm sorry," he exclaimed. "I didn't mean it. I'm sorry." Jungkook felt Tae chuckle slightly from where he was sprawled on his chest.

"It's okay," he said. "I totally could have taken you."

A small laugh left Jungkook's own lips this time. "Of course you could, hyung."

"And the other thing is okay, too," Taehyung added, rubbing a soothing hand over Jungkook's back. "We don't have to talk about it. But it's going to be okay."

Jungkook closed his eyes. "It's going to be okay," he repeated to himself, letting the words settle in his head.

"Everything's going to be okay."

"His names Seojun," Jimin had said, eyes crinkled into a bright smile. "We met a few weeks back and he asked me to be his boyfriend-" But Jungkook wasn't listening anymore because he couldn't stop the sinking feeling in his stomach, the pain in was causing him to keep his tight smile present on his face. Because that smile was for him. The way Jimin giggled, the way his face shone; that smile was reserved for him, Jimin's best friend.

But now, this man, this Seojun had stolen it from him, had stolen Jimin. Jimin was smiling so happily about him and he wasn't even here. Jungkook couldn't imagine Jimin smiling like that while talking to someone else about him. A cough cut through his thoughts and he turned to see Tae give him a sympathetic smile and a quick nudge of his head in Jimin's direction. The smallest was eying him, smile slowly fading and Jungkook couldn't help but feel a stab of guilt. Who was he to take Jimin's happiness away from him? Jimin deserved to be happy. Jimin deserved the world.

So, he placed what he hoped was a more realistic smile on his face and pulled Jimin in for a hug. "That's great, hyung," he said, the hug concealing his face from the elder. "When can we meet him?"

Tae came and hugged Jimin next, but Jungkook could see the concern etched on his face, the worry. Jungkook felt pitiful. "Yeah, Jiminie. I want to make sure he won't mess you around."

Giggling, Jimin looked at them both fondly. "Well, I'm meeting up with him tomorrow for lunch, you guys could come along if you wanted?" "That would be brilliant," Tae exclaimed, subtly nudging Jungkook.

"Yeah," Jungkook forced. "Can't wait."

Can't wait, my ass.

So, that's why him and Taehyung found themselves showing up to their café half an hour before the allotted time that Jimin had texted them both. Jungkook, though he would never admit it, was checking his brown hair in the reflection of a spoon, while Tae smirked at him from the seat next to him.

"You look fine, my little Kookie," he laughed, snatching the spoon from him and smacking him on the head with it. "I get what you're doing. You want Seojun to be intimidated by you, but you know that you can't, right? For Jimin?"

Sighing, Jungkook crossed his arms across his chest. "I know."

"And, you're not allowed to hate him either," he added, quickly glancing at his own reflection in the spoon, winking at his reflection, while Jungkook rolled his eyes, and placing it on the table. "You can't hate your best friend's boyfriend. But, I can hate him for you."

"Hyung," he whined when Tae rustled the hair he had just fixed. "You know that you're Jimin's best friend too," and when Tae gave him puppy eyes, he sighed and added, "mine too."

"Oh, Kookie!" Tae explained, grabbing his cheeks and squeezing them. "You're so adorable! I could just-"

A little cough cut him off (thank god), but when Jungkook looked up he realised the cough had been Jimin and the first glance that Jimin's boyfriend had ever gotten of Jungkook was not of him looking bad ass with awesome hair, but with his face being squeezed into a tomato and hair a total mess. Great.

"Errr, hi?" Jungkook said, never having felt so awkward in from of his own best friend. Jimin looked at Jungkook for a second and the blinked, pulling the man behind him by their joined hands. Jungkook would be lying if he said he didn't want to tear their hands apart and drag Jimin to a different country. They could change their names, send Tae and the others a coded message of their location and never have to see Seojun again.

"Tae Tae, Jungkookie," Jimin said gently (he was nervous, Jungkook wanted to hug him), "this is Seojun. Seojun, meet Jungkook and Taehyung."

The man in front of them was tall. That was the first thing that Jungkook noticed about him. He was tall compared to Jimin (thought nearly everyone was), but he was about the same height as Jungkook, which gave him some satisfaction. I could take him , he thought, glancing over the other guys figure. He was a muscular man, though, and he had brown hair that (Jungkook couldn't lie) fell in waves on his head in a way that was quite attractive. Honestly, the guy was a fucking god and Jungkook didn't care what Tae said, he hated him more than he'd ever hated anything in his entire life.

"It's nice to meet you," Seojun said, offering a hand (the one that Jimin wasn't holding, to Jungkook's disappointment) to Tae, who shook it politely, and then to Jungkook who shook it with as much strength as he could muster. The guy didn't even flinch, but he didn't narrow his eyes. Both Seojun and Jimin sat down and began talking about something with Tae, but Jungkook was too busy watching Jimin to pay attention. Jimin was leaning into Seojun's side, the taller placing a protective arm around his waist, and the two them were also holding hands. Jimin looked at Seojun like Jungkook had never seen him look at anyone. He didn't know how to describe it, though Tae later told him that he'd seen someone else look that way at someone before and it had taken him hours to realise Tae had meant him.

"Jungkook?" Jimin's voice cut though his thoughts and he turned to him, watching as the smile began to fall off of his hyung's face. He was doing it again, Jungkook knew, ruining his best friend's happiness with his own selfish sadness.

"Yes, hyung?" Smiling again, Jimin looked up at his boyfriend. "Seojun asked you a question."

Seojun smiled, Jungkook didn't like the way it looked. It was almost smug. "I wanted to know if I was older than you or not," he said. "But you just called Jiminie 'hyung', so I guess that makes you younger than me." Jungkook nodded. "So, I guess, as your elder, you should call me hyung." And, that's when Jungkook knew he really hated the guy because it wasn't a question. Calling someone hyung wasn't just about them being your elder, it was about them having your respect, and this guy didn't ask for it, he ordered it.

"I guess so," Jungkook said, eyes narrowing, "hyung."

A few minutes later, Seojun excused himself to go to the bathroom, leaving the three best friends alone.

"Isn't he amazing?" Jimin asked and Jungkook inwardly cringed at the way Jimin sounded. He sounded enthralled by this man. Jungkook hated it.

"Yeah," Tae said, and even he sounded off. Jungkook wondered whether or not Tae could sense something wrong with the guy too or if he was just imagining it.

"He's... great," Jungkook added, heart warming as Jimin smiled his eye smile.

"I'm so glad you guys like him," he exclaimed, taking both of their hands across the table. "Because I really like him, but you guys are still the most important people in my life. So, I really wanted you guys to like him as much as I do." Jungkook and Taehyung glanced at Jimin's tiny hands clasped around their own and then at each other warily, then back to Jimin's shining face. They both forced smiles. "Of course we like him," they both said and Jimin just beamed.


 

"I don't like him," Taehyung said, a few hours later as he drove Jungkook home. Jungkook, from his place in the passenger seat, sighed in relief.

"Thank god," he said, sliding down in his seat slightly. "I thought it was just because I'm in love with Jimin, but I really did think there was something off about him."

"I can't get used to you being do open about your love for Jiminie," Tae laughed, turning a corner abruptly. He wasn't the best of drivers, but it was that or get a lift with Jimin and mister perfect, so Jungkook chose possible death instantly. "But, you're right. I was getting a bad vibe from the guy."

"We can't do anything though. It would break Jimin's heart if he found out both of us didn't like him." Tae hummed in agreement and then was silent for a moment and Jungkook could tell he was thinking about something.

"Stop it!" He said jokingly. "You'll hurt yourself."

Taehyung rolled his eyes. "I'm just thinking," he said, pulling into the spot by Jungkook's apartment. "Didn't he look like someone we know?"

Jungkook thought back, brown hair, muscles and tall. It didn't ring any bells for him.

"No, not that I can think of," he said, wondering what Tae was on about. "Why?" "Nothing. Don't worry."

Jungkook and Tae found Jimin sat in one of the hair salon waiting chairs, flicking through a book of colours. He glanced up from the page when he heard the bell ring as they pushed through the door and smiled. Tae abruptly ran over, throwing himself into the space next to Jimin and wrapping his arms around him. "I thought something was wrong with you, Jiminie," he whined, burying his face into Jimin's shoulder while the smaller looked at Jungkook, rolling his eyes. "I thought perhaps you'd been kidnapped or abducted by aliens-"

Jungkook chuckled. "Tae, why would he be abducted by aliens? Surely the mothership would come back for you instead?"

Tae shot him an annoyed glare while Jimin giggled. "I'm going to dye my hair," Jimin said, watching as Tae's expression became one of excitement. "I need you guys to help me decide what colour to go for."

They all looked at the book full of colours. "How about bright green?"Tae asked jokingly. "Or multicoloured? You could be my little mochi rainbow!"

Shaking his head, Jimin turned to look at Jungkook, eyes hopeful. He felt his stomach jump up to his throat at the stare. It was ridiculous. Jimin had a boyfriend. Jimin was simply his best friend. He needed to get a fucking grip. He quickly dropped his eyes to the book and found a colour he thought would look beautiful one Jimin (though he could hypothesis that they would all suit him).

"How about this one?"

So, that's how, a couple of hours later, Taehyung and Jungkook found themselves in their regular spot at the café, watching as Jimin walked through the door with a new found confidence in features. He looked- well, Jungkook didn't even know how to put it into words. When before he would look at Jimin with his black hair and see him as he was when they were still children, small and adorable. Now, he looked... sexy. Like, ridiculously sexy, to the point that Jungkook's mouth went dry and he had to scramble to keep his thoughts out of the gutter. He'd gone with the colour that Jungkook had suggested, dark red, but where before Jungkook had thought it would suit the curve of his face and bring out the colour of his eyes, which it totally did. But it also gave Jimin a more mature look and it was doing crazy things to his head. Fucking hormones.

Where Taehyung clapped, bright smile on his face, whooping as Jimin jokingly spun, Jungkook's eyes slowly dropped down to the length of his legs, then up to his thick thighs and-

"Jungkook-ah?" Jimin asked, and Jungkook wondered if the new hair colour brought out the natural red of his cheeks. "What do you think?"

Blinking, Jungkook's mouth gaped open as he went to answer, but he was abruptly cut off by the sound of someone entering the cafe and a loud.

"What did you do?"

Jimin visibly jumped and the spot, and Jungkook turned to glare at whoever had scared his best friend, but then realised that it wasn't a stranger but Seojun, watching with what Jungkook could only describe as an expression of anger. He had never fucking hated someone so much as he did in that moment. As he watched, Jimin retreated into himself, all the confidence and excitement of just mere seconds ago gone, and Jungkook could feel himself wanting to punch the guy for causing his best friend to change like that.

"I dyed it?" He said, tiny fingers curled around each other, and Jungkook fought the urge to take his hand like he did as a child. "Don't you like it?"

Visibly, Seojun rearranged his facial expression to one of almost happiness, perhaps a neutral expression with raised ends of his mouth. "Of course I do, babe," he said, coming forward and pulling Jimin under his arm. He wasn't sure if he imagined it, but he thought he felt Tae cringe next to him. "I was just surprised is all. Why'd you decide to do it?"

Jimin let his face soften back into a smile, though the confidence that had Jungkook whirling from before. He ran a hand through his hair and glanced at Jungkook. "I wanted to do it for ages," he said, "but Jungkook picked the colour."

The comment was made offhandedly, but it was like something in his words caused Seojun to see Jungkook clearly for the first time since they met a few weeks ago. It wasn't like they had been spending time together. Jungkook had been happily avoiding him, only meeting up with Jimin when he knew that his boyfriend wouldn't be tagging alone, even when Tae begged him to not leave him alone with the other two.

But, now, Seojun seemed to narrow his eyes and glanced Jungkook up and down. "Did he now?" He asked and Jungkook couldn't help but narrow his own eyes in return.

"I did," he said calmly, "hyung."

So now Jungkook could be certain. Seojun wanted to punch him in the face just as much as Jungkook did. Though, Jungkook knew he could hit ten time harder. Anything for Jimin.

 

The Time He Didn't Have To

 

"So I told him, 'Tae Tae, you can't eat a whole tub of ice cream in five minutes, you'll get brain freeze' and, do you know what he did?"

"I bet he ate the entire box in four."

"Four minutes and thirty-three seconds! I'm surprised his brain isn't an actual ice cube now, but sometimes I question if he even has one."

Jungkook burst into laughter, one hand clutching his stomach, the other holding his phone to his ear, listening as Jimin giggled down the other end of the line. The movement sent a shot of pain through his head and he cut off with a low groan, leaning back against the pillows of his bed.

He heard Jimin sigh. "You sound really ill, Kookie," he remarked sadly, making Jungkook's heart swell. "Are you sure you don't want me to come over there? I could make you soup."

"No, please don't worry, hyung," he replied, shifting his phone over the other ear, so he could hook it under his face as he took a small slurp of his hot chocolate, curtesy of Taehyung. "Tae's already been over once and made me everything I could need."

The sound of Jimin shuffling on his sofa came through the phone and the thought of Jimin worrying over Jungkook made him feel warm inside. Like he was loved. He knew it wasn't, and could never be, in the same way that he loved the elder, but he figured that it could be enough. "But doesn't that make me a awful hyung?" Jimin asked.

"Of course not, hyung," he said, then realised he sounded too serious and added, "You're an awful hyung for not recording Tae's brainfreeze and not sending it to me.

" Jimin giggled a little again. "You brat," he said fondly. "But, really, please call me if you need anything, no matter the time, I'll come."

An image of Jimin making Jungkook soup, of Jimin tucking Jungkook into bed like Jungkook did before, or of him lying next to Jungkook tucked into him swum in his mind. He pushed it away, but the aching pain remained. Jungkook was halfway though agreeing, when he heard a voice yell something over on Jimin's end of the call. He strained his ears to make out the words, but all he got was Jimin's reply of, "No, I told you. It's just Jungkook."

Just Jungkook.

Ouch.

"Hyung?"

The reply came back quickly. "One sec, Kook." The words became muffled then, like Jimin had covered the phone with his hand but Jungkook still caught some of the words. "We're just talking- "-I don't know what you're talking about- "- my best friend-" Then the sound of the hand being removed and Jimin's heavy breathing. "I've got to go, Jungkookie. Please take care of yourself."

Jungkook scrambled for words. "Hyung, what's wrong?"

"Nothing, Kookie," he said, but it was rushed. "Make sure you get some sleep. Good night."

Then the line went dead.


 

He sent Jimin two text messages after their phone call ended so abruptly.

Honestly, he was starting to get worried, but just moving from one spot on the bed to another caused Jungkook to feel like he might honestly hurl up a tsunami. He texted Tae too, hoping he could get the other boy to check on Jimin, but then he remembered that Tae was volunteering at the animal shelter and that his phone was likely be off. After a few hours, Jungkook could feel the worry leave him and be replaced by a tiredness in his brain and a heaviness in his bones and by five in the afternoon he was fast asleep, sprawled across his bed, in aware of the vibrations of his phone from under his pillow.

Jungkook almost forgot to breath when the final vibration finally woke him up. He'd blindly searched for his phone through the dark, head feelings significantly better, but still giving the odd shot of pain for good measure. He sat straight upright as he read the messages, and was pulling his shoes on and a red hoodie over his jogging bottoms, running out of the door before the light of his phone even dimmed.

It was bitter cold outside.

It was like the chill was cutting into his skin and, though he was wearing his hoodie, he knew he should have put on a coat or at least some gloves and a scarf because this weather could not be improving the condition of the virus he already had. But, I only point this piece of information out to you because Jungkook doesn't fucking care that his fingers actually feel like they might just snap off or that his ears may have gone a totally inhuman shade of red because he's too busy running. It might not be logical to sprint though Central Park in the middle of the night, where there's minimal light and the floor is slippery with ice, but really Jungkook was only thinking about Jimin. That Jimin was out in the dark. That Jimin was out in the cold. That he should have bought a scarf for Jimin to wear because Jimin could be cold, scared and alone.

So, he was running at almost six in the morning because apparent love does stupid things to you, even when the person you're in love with is your best friend and they have a boyfriend who literally wants to punch you.

Jungkook skidded to a stop, air puffing out around him. He could see Jimin sat alone on a bench under a weak lamp that offered small amounts of light in a tiny puddle around Jimin. He was shivering and only wearing a long sleeved shirt and jeans, red hair gorgeous under the moonlight. Jimin jumped and his head snapped up when Jungkook jogged over. He immediately wrapped his arms around Jimin, checking him over the best he could in the dim light. The boy in his arms shuddered from the cold and breathed heavily into Jungkook's neck.

"Jungkookie," he breathed out just as heavily and Jungkook removed his arms, hoping Jimin could see his red cheek in the dark. The older boy looked up with him with an expression that Jimin couldn't read and it was weird. Jungkook had never not able read Jimin, his own open book.

"What is it?" Jungkook said gently. "What happened? Are you okay?"

Sighing, Jimin's mouth slid into a tiny smile and Jungkook felt a weight leave his chest. He was smiling, everything was going to be okay.

"I broke up with Seojun," Jimin stated. Jungkook was taken aback. He felt his eyes widen and did his best to pull his facial expression into one that was neutral. He honestly couldn't tell if he was happy or angry, because on the one hand the boy he was in love with was no longer with a fucking jerk and on the other hand, Jimin was happy with him. Right?

"Why?" Jungkook said, in what he hoped sounded calm. "What happened?" Under the light, Jungkook could swear he saw Jimin blush and glance around him nervously, but he blinked and convinced himself otherwise. The boy had just had his heart broken, he thought, he would be jittery.

Jimin focused on his tiny hands and breathed, "He told me I couldn't see you anymore," the boy's eyes moved up from his hands slowly, completely vulnerable. He met Jungkook's eyes and Jungkook could feel himself falling all over again. "So I told him it was over."

It was like all the air had been knocked out of his lungs. No, the air had been knocked out and his heart was contracting, squeezing harder than he could cope with. Jimin- Jimin had broken up with his boyfriend because of Jungkook? Jimin had chosen Jungkook because it was that or not see him? Suddenly, an awful thought occurred to him. "You- You broke up with him because of me?" He uttered. "You love him and you broke up with him because of me? Hyung, you can't! You can't give up someone you love for me!"

All the excitement had left him again because he couldn't be the cause for Jimin's sadness, for Jimin to loose something that he loved and wanted. Jungkook wasn't that selfish. Could never be anything other than selfish when Jimin was involved. Jimin looked like he was panicking now.

Perhaps he'd realised Jungkook wasn't worth it and that he'd made a terrible mistake. "Jungkook, no," he said, and Jungkook almost thought he sounded desperate. He reached to take Jungkook's hand in his own. "That's not-"

"What the hell is happening?"

They both jumped, hands falling away from one another, and Jungkook looked up to glare at the man who stood watching them like they'd just committed a crime against humanity. Seojun seemed to be pissed, that was the best explanation for it. Sure, he'd just been broken up with, but he wasn't even looking at Jimin, he was burning holes into Jungkook's head, sizing him up.

"Seojun?" Jimin asked quietly, all the desperation from earlier melted away into something else. Something worse. "How did you even find me?"

Seojun turned to Jimin and, rather than his eyes softening, they seemed to harden, like he'd remembered why he was there. It made Jungkook want to stand in front of his hyung and throw his arms wide to protect him.

"Your find my iPhone was on," he said casually, like that wasn't totally creepy. "Come on, Jimin," he said, taking Jimin by the arm and pulling him (not too gently) to his feet. Jungkook rose with them. "You're coming home with me." Jimin turned to Jungkook. Fear. That's the expression that was on Jimin's face, a fear that only Jungkook could see because Jimin was trying to hide it, to be brave. And, this wasn't Jungkook's type of brave or even his brother's. It belonged to Jimin, which meant it was as pure as he was. Jimin felt he needed to be brave and Jungkook knew from the one look that he had been right about Seojun all along.

"Actually, Seojun hyung," he said, keeping his tone level. "I was talking to Jimin hyung about something," he turned to Jimin, still in Seojun's grip, watching him with wide eyes. "Is that okay, hyung?"

"Yeah, that's-"

"No."

Jungkook turned to Seojun. "Excuse you, but I actually think Jimin hyung was speaking."

"No," Seojun said firmly, actually looking offended. "He's my boyfriend. He's coming with me." He began to tug harshly on Jimin's arm and, like when they had first met, Jimin made a small noise from the back of his throat and Jungkook felt the anger boiling in him.

"Jimin, do you want to go with him?" He asked, dropping the formalities. He didn't care. He just wanted Jimin safe.

Before Jimin could answer, Seojun exclaimed. "Of course he does! He's my fucking boyfriend! I get that you're in love with him, but it's pathetic. You're pathetic. He's not going to see you anymore. He's mine. Understand?"

He couldn't look at Jimin. It's like the world stopped and his thoughts stopped running through his head and the words just wouldn't reach his mouth. The "no, you're lying" or the "he's just my best friend" or some other lie he could come up with wouldn't formulate on his tongue. Because he was so fucking angry all he could think about was the way Jimin had snapped his head in his direction at the words, the way Jimin's jaw had locked. And now?

Now Jimin was swinging his tin fist towards a man so much bigger and taller than him and punching him straight in the face.

Jimin flinched slightly when the impact took place, but Jungkook could also see the complete satisfaction at the crack that came from Seojun's nose. Seojun's hand came up to grip at his nose, letting out a pained grunt, blood seeping out from between his fingers. Jungkook could see him begin to clench his other fist, but Jungkook crossed his own arms tightly over his chest, showing his muscles (only, he knew going to the gym would pay off) and watched as the elder looked at him, then glared at Jimin and seemed to decide it wasn't worth the fight. He backed away and ran.

It was the second most beautiful thing he'd ever seen in his life.

The first turned towards him looking equally surprised  and chuffed with himself. "I can't believe I just did that," he breathed, slightly dazed. "And I scared him away." He flexed the muscles of his tiny arms (Jungkook gulped deeply) and actually giggled.

In fact, the giggle turned into full blown laughter and, eventually, both boys were leaning over one another on the bench, clutching their stomachs in the happy pain. Jungkook wasn't even sure what he was laughing about, but Jimin was happy, and Jimin was lying on his shoulder and Jimin wasn't saying anything about what he'd just heard from his ex’s mouth about his best friend. But, like all good things, their laughter began to die down and Jimin wrapped his tiny hands around themselves and Jungkook watched his fingers move as he fidgeted.

Someone was going to have to say something, he knew, and clearly Jimin didn’t want it to be him, which made sense. Jimin was probably in outrage, he was probably questioning Jungkook and their friendship and their friendship was something that Jungkook was not willing to put on the line. He’d happily suffer through this feeling if it meant he could still see Jimin’s face every day.

“About what Seojun said-” He started slowly, as though approaching a hungry bear, because he didn’t really know how to finish the sentence.

“No, its okay” Jimin exclaimed, shaking his head earnestly. “He was just jealous that I talked to you so often, but told him that you’re just my best friend over and over. I said, ‘Jungkookies not even gay’ and ‘Jungkookie would go for someone who was more attractive’, but he just kept going on and on about how you looked at me or something stupid like that. I told he you saw me as a older brother and he just kept making jokes about how that’s not how someone looks at their brother and it was just exhausting because I know you’re not in love with me that would just be-”

“I am,” he said, words falling out of his mouth in one big mouthful before he could even stop them. In fact, they even surprised him. He hadn’t planned on them slipping out, he hadn’t even known he had said them until he saw the look of shock on Jimin’s face, but he’d seen Jimin ranting and he’d seen the way his cheeks puffed out adorably in his annoyance and it had just happened. He would do almost anything to take it back.

“'You are' what?” Jimin said blindly. Maybe Jungkook had been mistaken. Maybe he had misheard Jimin and he’d just fucked up big time. Whatever. It didn’t matter now. As much as he loved Jimin as a friend and could live by his side, he couldn’t live with Jimin being with someone else again, not without Jimin knowing, because he was also in love with him. And that made all the difference.

Jungkook forced his eyes up to Jimin’s and while the movement was difficult, it wasn’t hard to rest them there and swim in his irises. “Everything,” he breathed. “Everything you just said. Seojun may be a fucking idiot, but apparently, he’s not blind.”

He waited for some kind of reaction. Perhaps a look of outrage. Perhaps for Jimin to jump away from him in disgust or for Jimin to just get up and leave, never to be seen again. But, instead, the elder just watched him silently, eyes scanning Jungkook’s face and Jungkook knew there was no hiding it anymore, the love on his face, it was clear for anyone to witness.

“You’re gay?” Jimin muttered and Jungkook could swear that his eyes lowered slightly, down to his own lips, but he blinked and they were back on his eyes.

Jungkook nodded, moving slightly closer, the heat of Jimin’s body like a magnet. “Yes.”

“And you don’t see me as a brother?” There was a hint of sadness behind it, but it was like Jimin as moving closer too. He shook his head, eyes dropping down to Jimin’s lips. He licked his own in the cold. Jimin’s eyes flittered across his face at the movement and he pushed himself closer to Jungkook. They were thigh to thigh.

“And,” Jimin swallowed. Jungkook followed the movement of his Adam’s apple with his eyes. “And, you love me?”

It came out with uncertainty and Jungkook wondered blindly how Jimin could even possibly doubt it, but then he was cupping Jimin’s cheek and brushing their lips together gently, like he was testing the water, ready for Jimin to throw him away. Instead, the older shivered and chased his lips as he moved away, barely having touched. “In love, hyung,” he muttered, eyes fluttering closed, Jimin’s breath warm on his face. “I’m in love with you, Park Jimin.”

And then they were kissing.

At first, it was like Jimin would move away, so much so that Jungkook began to move his own lips back, because Jimin wasn’t moving, wasn’t responding, and Jungkook had the horrible feeling that he’d done something terrible. But then he felt Jimin’s eye lashes graze his cheek as he closed his eyes and a hand tangle in his hair, slightly scratching his scalp. It was like Jungkook could finally see. His eyes were shut, but the feel of Jimin against him sent the image of him to his mind and he could see the beautiful boy that he held. He could see the way that Jimin ran a hand up his arm, he could see the tilt of Jimin’s head as their mouths opened, and he could taste Jimin finally. It was short and kind off uncomfortable on the park bench, but it was amazing none of the less and when they pulled away from one another, Jungkook felt the contrast like nothing before.

Jimin was watching him, cheeks adorably red, and a tiny smile on the lips Jungkook had just kissed. “I’m in love with you too, you idiot” he said, pressing their foreheads so that they were touching. "That's what I've been trying to tell you this entire time."

And, if you’d have gone to the park that night and looked for a diming light under the stars. You would have found them. The boy with the red hair and the younger with the light in his eyes, just watching each other, waiting for the sun to rise. You may think it seemed strange. The fact that they weren’t moving, they weren’t talking, they were just holding each other. Or you may have smiled, thinking that they were a cute couple. But, either way, you’d have known that they were together. And that they were totally in love.

In love and together.

The End

Kim Taehyung cackled. No, really, he actually cackled.

But then he wobbled.

Then he tipped.

Then he fell.

He fell straight out of the tree and directly onto the bench where his two best friends were gazing lovingly into each other’s eyes.

And, then they were together as three.

Exactly as it should be.

Hello! I really hope that this was okay! It was supposed to be short, but I got carried away and it just kept going. I procrastinate like a pro and its exam period, so here I am. I may write a sequel for this, or I could do one of the other couples stories. Let me know if you have any recommendations for me!
