Work Text:
"I'd like to dedicate this song to Sero!" Kaminari shouted into the microphone.
All of Class 1A was seated in the common room on the couches, chairs and floor. A karaoke machine had been hooked up, and right now the blond boy was holding the microphone in his hand, screaming along to the lyrics of I'm a Believer as Sero and Kirishima cheered, and Mina booed him.
Already half the class had gone up to sing something. Tokoyami had sung My Immortal whether ironically or dead serious no one could tell. Kirishima had performed It's Raining Men, Tooru had gotten up to sing Wannabe, Shouji surprised everyone with Poor Unfortunate Souls, and Satou had attempted to sing Cooking By the Book before Kaminari and Sero started blasting the remix and chanting along. Some duets had also been performed. Deku had asked Ochako to sing You've Got a Friend in Me with him, and then Iida, Tsuyu and Todoroki joined them to sing Hot n Cold. Not wanting to be outdone, Kaminari and Sero had dragged Mina, Kirishima and somehow Bakugou up to sing We Are Number One.
Kaminari had gotten halfway through the song when Jirou chucked a pillow at him and yelled for someone to pull him offstage. This led to Bakugou tackling Kaminari, and a mix of yells and explosions.
Ochako turned to Tsuyu with a laugh.
"This is fun, isn't it?"
"It is." Tsuyu nodded as Kirishima basically dragged Bakugou upstage to perform a duet. At the moment, the girl had other things on her mind though. Mainly her pretty, cheerful and kind classmate sitting right next to her and holding her hand. Tsuyu prayed her face wasn't turning red, and she nearly missed Ochako's next question, absorbed in her thoughts.
"Do you wanna go up and perform something, Tsuyu?" Tsuyu blinked, registering what Ochako had just asked. After a moment, she shook her head.
"I'm alright. I prefer watching. I didn't mind being up with all of you earlier since we were a big group, but I don't really like singing alone."
"Oh." Ochako's face almost seemed to fall, and Tsuyu frowned, puzzled as to why that could be. She worried she'd done something to upset the other. However, Ochako's smile was back a moment later, almost brighter than before. "That's fine, though! You don't have to sing if you don't want to. And it is a lot of fun to watch." She laughed nodding at Kirishima's attempt to encourage Bakugou to sing Jasmine's part of A Whole New World. The blond boy only chucked the microphone on the floor in response.
Everyone covered their ears at the horrible screeching sound that followed from the mic being dropped on the floor, and Tsuyu and Ochako both jumped. Ochako squeezed Tsuyu's hand to comfort her, and Tsuyu blushed at the contact.
If she was honest, she wasn't a huge fan of karaoke. It was fun to watch the others, and she liked hanging out with them, but she just didn't like getting up to sing. She did enjoy singing in her free time, alone and out of sight, but performing in front of others made her nervous. However, she knew how much Ochako loved it, and as long as she was able to sit and watch, she was content. She was even willing every so often to get up and do a song with a group since she could just hide in the background.
Ochako had been one of the people who started these karaoke sessions. She, Midoriya, Kaminari and Mina had started it for fun. One day, Tsuyu heard Mina and Ochako's voices from the hallway, and she ventured out to see what was going on.
She felt bad at having interrupted, but Ochako had run over and assured her that it was no trouble, and she could stay and watch or even sing if she wanted. Tsuyu opted to stay but refused to sing. Ochako seemed relieved that she was willing to stay even if she would not sing, and the two of them often sat next to each other on the couch, Ochako only leaving her side when she got up to perform.
More and more kids ended up joining in on the sessions as they realized what was going on, and now it had become a weekly class activity.
Kouda and Jirou got up next to do a duet of Willow Tree March. This shocked everyone who had never heard Kouda sing before, and the room exploded in applause when they finished causing both of them to blush. Todoroki, Midoriya, Iida, Momo and Kirishima all got up and performed The Boys are Back. Aoyama, Mina and Tooru also all got up to do Never Gonna Give You Up earning groans and boos from some of the class and laughter from others. The theme of the songs changed to show tunes as Kaminari, Sero and Kirishima went next with Sincerely Me, and then Bakugou shocked everyone with Meant to Be Yours from Heathers.
"I didn't know Bakugou could sing." Mina hissed to Ochako, nudging her shoulder.
"Me neither." Ochako whispered back.
"I'm more surprised he likes musicals." Tsuyu added, and a grin split across Mina's face.
"You're right, Tsuyu! This could make for good blackmail material." She giggled, rubbing her hands together, and Tsuyu felt a pang of sympathy for Bakugou.
Bakugou finished, and then Tooru dragged all the girls up with her to sing Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. After that, more people went, doing solos or duets including Iida and Izuku singing Disco Inferno to Todoroki to everyone's delight. The boy's face was flushed, and he looked like he was about to burst out laughing at their antics. Tsuyu couldn't help but wonder how Kaminari had gotten the Shrek 2 version of the song, but then again it didn't surprise her.
She glanced over at Ochako who seemed to have something on her mind, no longer focused on the singers. Tsuyu flicked her tongue, wondering if she should ask what was wrong. As if sensing her worry, Ochako looked over, a small smile on her face.
"Don't worry, I'm alright, Tsuyu."
"You sure?"
"Yeah."
A moment of silence passed between them. Tsuyu could tell there was something more, though. Something that was nagging her.
"Is something bothering you?"
"No, I'm alright." Ochako flushed. "I just kinda wanted to get up and do a duet." She nodded at Kaminari who had gotten up after the other two finished and was attempting to serenade Bakugou with I Won't Say I'm in Love. Bakugou looked about to blast his, Jirou, Kirishima, Momo, Sero and Mina's faces off.
"I'm sure one of the others would be happy if you asked them to." Tsuyu supplied, and Ochako bit her lip.
"The thing is," Ochako started, then blushed. She averted her eyes, squeezing the paw pad on her finger. "It's just that I really want to do a duet with you, Tsuyu."
"Oh."
"I mean, if you don't want to, it's fine!" Ochako flushed waving her arms. Tsuyu shook her head. A small smile crept across her face.
"No, it's fine. If it's with you, it's ok."
"Are you sure? I won't make you if you don't want to."
"I'm sure." Tsuyu squeezed Ochako's hand causing both girls to blush. The music faded out as Kaminari tried to lean against Bakugou and got shoved into the five background singers.
"Alright, who's next?" Kirishima cheered, trying to shield Kaminari from an enraged Bakugou.
"Tsuyu and I are gonna go!" Ochako jumped up from the couch with Tsuyu. Tsuyu's heart pounded in her chest as they went over to the machine, and Kirishima handed over the microphone to her, grinning.
"Have fun, you two!"
"You guys are gonna do a duet? Ooh!" Mina teased, winking at Ochako. The girl blushed, and Tsuyu tilted her head, curious as to her reaction.
"What song do you want to do?" Ochako asked, her words coming out a bit more rushed than usual as she looked through the list they had with rapt interest. Tsuyu tapped her chin. She leaned over to look down, and one song in particular caught her eye.
"What about Defying Gravity?" Ochako's eyes lit up causing Tsuyu's heat to beat faster. "You know, because we both like that musical after all, and it's a duet we could do."
Plus it reminds me of your quirk, she thought to herself.
Ochako brightened at the suggestion and clapped her hands together.
"Defying Gravity it is, then! Do you want to be Elphaba or Glinda?"
"I'll be Elphaba. You can be Glinda."
"Ok!" Ochako cheered and selected the song.
The class settled down as the music started, and Ochako launched into Glinda's lines. Tsuyu took a deep breath, readying herself for her part which would be up next. Hearing Ochako's voice soothed her, and she told herself she could do it, that as long as she focused on Ochako it would be fine.
"-I hope you're happy how you hurt your cause forever. I hope you think you're clever!" Ochako sang, and Tsuyu broke out into her part.
"I hope you're happy. I hope you're happy, too. I hope you're proud how you would grovel in submission, to feed your own ambition." She saw Ochako's eyes widen at her voice, and Tsuyu flushed. She had never sang in front of anyone before despite singing in private, and it made her nervous. However, Ochako's eyes were sparkling and full of such warmth that it encouraged her to keep going.
"So though I can't imagine how! I hope you're happy right now...” The two sang together, their voices in harmony. The class became silent, awestruck as the two girls performed. The whole time Tsuyu focused on Ochako, only her, banishing all other thoughts and fears from her mind.
At last, two finished the song, Tsuyu belting out the last line. When they finished, Ochako grabbed Tsuyu's hand and lifted it in the air. The class cheered, Kaminari and Mina whistling, and Tsuyu blushed. She noticed Ochako's face was flushed as well. Giggling, both girls took their seats back on the couch.
"I didn't know you could sing like that!" Mina cheered, and Tsuyu buried her face in one of the pillows. "Ochako why didn't you tell me she had the voice of an angel?"
"I didn't know she could sing like that either." Ochako admitted, a bright smile on her face and her cheeks red. "Tsuyu, you're incredible."
"Thanks..." Tsuyu mumbled. Her heart was still thumping. While she was up there, all her focus was on Ochako, and now she realized that she'd just gotten up to sing in front of her whole class.
But it hadn't been as bad as she feared. After all, she had been at Ochako's side.
She stole a glance at the other girl, but Ochako was preoccupied with watching the next singer. Tsuyu clenched her hands around the pillow. Ochako was always so confident and cheerful. She never knew how the other girl brought herself to get up in front of everyone. It was one of the things she admired and loved most about her.
A few more songs were sung; Mina and Jirou sang You're the One That I Want, and someone convinced Todoroki to sing Let it Go. Then, Kirishima got up again. He tapped the microphone, a grin on his face.
"This song is dedicated to Tsuyu and Ochako!" He yelled into the microphone, and both girls jumped, having started to doze off as the night dragged on. Ochako's head had been resting on Tsuyu's shoulder, but at the sound of their names, she jolted upright. Tsuyu missed the warmth of Ochako's head against hers, but she found reassurance in Ochako's hand still clutched around her own, and she frowned as she wondered what Kirishima had planned for them.
Music started to play as Kirishima started the song he'd chosen for them, and Ochako frowned.
"Oh no."
"Ochako, what is it?" Tsuyu tilted her head.
"Kirishima!" Ochako tried to lunge at him, but Iida grabbed her arm before she could.
"I'm sorry, Ochako, but Midoriya said not to interfere."
"What are you talking about?" Ochako demanded as Mina latched onto her other arm with a grin.
"There you see her, sitting there across the way," Kirishima sang. Tsuyu's eyes widened as she recognized the song. The redhead continued to sing, Kaminari and Sero jumping up from the chair they shared and joining in as well.
"Yes, you want her. Look at her you know you do. It's possible she wants you too. There's one way to ask her." Now Tooru, Ojiro, Tokoyami, Shouji and even Bakugou of all people - although he seemed to be mumbling the lyrics - had joined in.
"It don't take a word, not a single word. Go on and kiss the girl."
Tsuyu covered her face in the pillow, and Ochako had started floating, hands shielding her face.
"Sha la la la la la my oh my looks like the girl's too shy, ain't gonna kiss the girl." The whole class erupted into song. "Sha la la la la la ain't that sad, it's a shame, too bad. You're gonna miss the girl."
"Kirishima, I'm never telling you about my crush again!"
"Crush?" Tsuyu tilted her head, and Ochako flushed.
"I-I mean-" She stammered, falling onto the couch as her quirk wore off all of a sudden.
"Oh please, the whole class knows you too are together." Bakugou scoffed.
"Like you and Kirishima." Kaminari teased earning a shove from Bakugou.
"Together?" Ochako squeaked, and Tsuyu's head whirled. It was true she had a crush on Ochako. She loved the other girl's company, and she'd even told Shouji, Tokoyami, Midoriya and Kirishima this since aside from Ochako herself, they were the four she was closest to. Despite her huge crush, she was too scared to ask the other girl out and risk ruining their friendship. Because there was no way Ochako liked her back. But now...
Kirishima just kept singing once the instrumental part ended, seemingly unaffected by Kaminari's comment and smiling warmly at Ochako and Tsuyu. The rest of the class joined back in soon as they realized the vocals had started again. Tsuyu felt her cheeks heating up as realization sunk in at what Ochako had said. Ochako liked her. Ochako had a crush on her.
And she had a crush on Ochako.
She never thought that Ochako might have those feelings as well. Never could bring herself to imagine it.
But Ochako just admitted that she had a crush on her.
"Go on and kiss the girl!" The whole class shouted as the song ended. Ochako finally mustered up the courage to look at Tsuyu, her eyes wide and face flushed.
"Tsuyu, I-"
"I like you, too." Tsuyu admitted, barely aware of anyone around her, only looking at Ochako. She flicked her tongue, averting her eyes to the pillow she still held. "I didn't know if you, that is," Tsuyu's eyes widened as Ochako leaned in and kissed her on the cheek before scooting back, flustered, her arms waving in the air.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done that." Ochako shook her head, and Tsuyu grabbed her hands. Both girls blushed, and somewhere in the background Tsuyu heard someone aww and someone else hiss at them to shut up and stop ruining the moment.
"Ochako, I have a crush on you, too." Tsuyu said, finding the words to tell Ochako what she had to. "I've liked you for a while now. I just didn't know if you liked me that way."
"I've liked you for a while, too, Tsuyu!" Ochako exclaimed and squeezed her hands. "I was just afraid that you didn't like me that way either."
"You're welcome." Mina laughed, hand on her hip, breaking the moment between them. Ochako glared at the pink haired girl who raised her hands in surrender. "Even if you hadn't told me about your crush - which by the way I didn't tell anyone about, they all figured it out on their own or were told by one of you - it would have been obvious to me."
A chorus of agreement rose up from the class, and Ochako flushed.
"Was it that obvious?"
"Apparently to everyone but the two of you." Bakugou huffed.
"When Midoriya and I found out both of you guys had crushes on each other, we knew we had to help get you guys together." Kirishima explained and high-fived Midoriya. "And Mina and Kaminari kinda suspected too after seeing you guys during our karaoke sessions. And it kinda just grew the more people who joined. So we came up with a plan, because none of us could deal with you two so close to your happy ending but not willing to take the final step to get there."
Ochako looked at Tsuyu, scratching the back of her neck. Her brown eyes were filled with happiness and worry.
"I'm sorry for not telling you sooner."
"I wish I had as well. But I'm glad that you feel the same." Tsuyu said, squeezing Ochako's hands again. The class cheered, and just like that, the night of songs and fun continued.
Eventually Aizawa came in and shut down karaoke night reminding the kids they had a curfew. Ochako walked with Tsuyu back to her dorm. She paused outside Tsuyu's door.
"Well, I guess we're dating now?" She asked, then blushed. "I mean, if you want to."
"I'd love that." Tsuyu nodded. She hesitated for a moment, then placed a quick kiss on Ochako's lips. Both girls blushed, and then burst out into laughter, wide smiles on their faces. As the laughter died down, Tsuyu gave Ochako a warm smile before opening the door to her dorm.
"Good night, Ochako."
"Good night, Tsuyu."
