you were a coincidence (that looked like destiny)

Summary:

“Uhm…” Yoongi says eloquently, mentally slapping himself to get his shit together. “Can I help you?”

Hoseok shuffles awkwardly on his feet, glancing down as he mumbles out an answer.

“Yeah, actually. I was wondering if I could use your shower?”

Or: “My shower’s broken but I’ve got a date tonight so could I possibly use your shower please?” “Oh sure (neighbour that I’ve been crushing on for the past six months) of course you can use my shower to get ready for your date (fuck fuck fuck)”

Work Text:

Yoongi is what most would call a “homebody”.

He prefers staying inside, working on songs and writing some lyrics, maybe read or watch a good movie. Sure, he also isn’t against going to the club if Taehyung and Jeongguk manage to drag him along but he would prefer a quiet night at home to any loud party.

Today was one of those nights.

He had gotten a text from Taehyung earlier, telling him that he and the others planned on checking out this new club downtown tonight and Yoongi had said he would think about joining them, but deep down he already knew he would spend the night on his couch.

Yoongi is lounging in his living room, having ordered pizza earlier, being too lazy to cook for himself, when his doorbell rings. He figures it must be the food, albeit quicker than usual, and gets up to open the door.

He doesn’t even check if it really is the pizza delivery guy before opening his door widely - only to be greeted by someone who definitely isn’t delivering his pizza.

There in front of him stands none other than his cute neighbor. Shy yet bright, heart-shaped smile on his lips, looking at Yoongi sheepishly.

Yoongi pretends his heart doesn’t flutter at the sight. It really doesn’t.

“Hi?” The greeting comes out as more of a question, Yoongi caught completely off guard.

“Hello,” his neighbor, Jung Hoseok, says.

They haven’t really talked much before besides an occasional hello and that one time when they had made small talk while Hoseok moved in across the hall. That hasn’t stopped Yoongi from developing a massive crush on the other, though. Not that he would ever act on it, he hardly saw Hoseok and coming straight up to his door to ask him out was… kind of creepy, Yoongi felt.

But here Hoseok is, at his door for no apparent reason, and Yoongi isn’t really sure how to handle this development.

“Uhm…” Yoongi says eloquently, mentally slapping himself to get his shit together. He tends to lose all composure around boys he likes. “Can I help you?”

Hoseok shuffles awkwardly on his feet, glancing down as he mumbles out an answer.

“Yeah, actually. I was wondering if I could use your shower?”

Yoongi almost chokes on air.

“W-what?” He asks surprised and a bit dumbfounded, not really sure if Hoseok’s being serious.

Across from him, Hoseok blushes a pretty pink, smile turning somewhat timid. “My shower broke and I need to get ready for a date. I have to leave in about an hour and there’s no way to fix mine in that time.”

Yoongi’s stomach drops. Of course Hoseok would have a date.

He tries to brush it off, it’s not like he has any right to be jealous when he never even tried to approach the other.

So Yoongi tries his best to smile instead, opening his door further. “Sure,” he says, indicating for Hoseok to enter. He does so, glancing around Yoongi’s place with curiosity. Under his arms he’s already carrying a change of clothes and a towel and Yoongi isn’t sure whether he should feel thrown off by the fact that Hoseok already came prepared.

Being a neat freak, Yoongi has always kept his places pretty plain and free of clutter, save for some pictures on the walls that he occasionally takes on his trips. Photography is pretty much Yoongi’s biggest hobby besides music, and it showed.

“These pictures are so cool,” Hoseok says in awe, walking over to a one of the frames to take a better look. “Did you take them?”

“Thanks,” Yoongi replies, closing the door. “Yeah, I did.”

Silence falls over them and Yoongi feels slightly awkward, not really sure what to do. Should he just show Hoseok to the bathroom? Or should he attempt some small talk? It’s not like he could really use this opportunity to make a move, since Hoseok was literally getting ready for a date with someone else.

“Do you—”

“I’ll just—”

They both start and stop simultaneously.

Hoseok breaks out in loud laughter that should probably be obnoxious but Yoongi just feels endeared and smiles as well.

“Okay, you first,” Hoseok says once he’s calmed himself down from laughing, a big grin lingering on his lips.

Yoongi tries again. “Do you need anything else?”

Hoseok shrugs and thinks. “Nah. I can use your shampoo right?”

“Uhm...sure. Bathroom is second door on the left.”

Shooting him a thumbs up and a sunshine smile, Hoseok makes his way down the hall. “Thanks so much!”

As soon as Hoseok closes the door behind himself, Yoongi slumps against the wall. Namjoon always berates him for never actually approaching who he’s interesting in, saying time and time again how he’ll miss out on perfect opportunities. This is a prime example of such an occasion.

But Yoongi pushes himself off the wall and carries on with his life regardless.

Just as he passes the bathroom he hears the water being turned on. He really, really doesn’t dwell on the fact that Hoseok is right there, in this moment, naked in his shower. He doesn’t.

Much less does he dwell on the fact that Hoseok is literally getting ready for a date with someone that isn’t Yoongi.

While he waits for Hoseok to get ready, he busies himself by mindlessly watching some TV.

It’s that night that Yoongi discovers Hoseok likes his showers long and hot. After what feels like an hour, but in reality was only about twenty minutes, Hoseok emerges from the bathroom with a hot wave of steam accompanying him.

Yoongi has to do a double take when he realizes that Hoseok is merely wearing a towel tied snugly around his slim hips. His chest was glistening and his hair was dripping water on his shoulders.

“Can I use your moisturizer?” He asks, ducking his head in a sheepish smile. “Forgot mine.”

Slowly, the gears in Yoongi’s head begin to turn again and he shakes himself out of whatever trance he had been under. He prays he hasn't been zoning out and staring at Hoseok’s naked chest for too long.

“Sure.” He’s probably nodding too hard but his voice, at least, sounds steady to his own ears.

Hoseok shoots him a toothy grin and a thumbs up. “Awesome!”

Once he closes the bathroom door behind himself, Yoongi falls back into the soft cushions of the couch. He really has a knack for making a fool of himself, he thinks to himself. He can't even handle seeing an attractive guy shirtless. And wet.

Some drama is still playing on the TV and Yoongi tries to focus on it, but to no avail. On top of that, he's still waiting on his pizza so his mind has nothing better to do than to keep wandering back to Hoseok down the hall.

He continues to mourn the fact that Hoseok is dating someone else and there's nothing more he can do than borrow him his shower and his moisturizer to get ready. Figures this kind of thing would happen to Yoongi, out of all people.

The next time Hoseok leaves the bathroom, there is considerably less steam and he's wearing way more clothes.

He looks good. Yoongi tries to ignore it.

Hoseok is wearing slim fitted dark jeans and a white button down topped off with a classic, black blazer. His black hair is messy but in a way that suggests he tended to it more than necessary. It's obvious how much effort he put into this. Yoongi may be a little jealous, although he tells himself repeatedly he isn’t.

“How do I look?” Hoseok asks while he does a cute swirl. Still, his confident pose can't cover how his tone is close to sounding shy.

The way Yoongi is staring is probably obvious by now and he fears his mouth is hanging open dumbly, but somehow he still manages to say “Great.” What's really going through his mind is something along the lines of beautiful, handsome, stunning, hot, amazing, but he figures saying all that out loud might scare Hoseok off.

A pretty blush colors Hoseok’s cheeks despite how simple his compliment was. Yoongi’s heart flutters.

“Thanks,” Hoseok mumbles. He glances around the apartment before finally settling on the door. “I should probably go.”

“Yeah.” Yoongi realizes he’s been staring. “Well, have fun.” He hopes Hoseok can’t hear how forced his words are.

But Hoseok looks at him with bright eyes and gives a sincere “thank you” before making his way to the door. Once opened, he turns back one last time to flash Yoongi a brilliant smile. And then he’s gone.

To have a date with someone else.

Yoongi doesn’t even know who it is yet he can’t help but feel some kind of petty jealousy towards them. He’s painfully aware that he’s only got himself to blame for never asking Hoseok out, for never even trying. Still.

All Yoongi can do it stare at the closed door remorsefully.

He slumps down on his couch, hitting the headrest hard. With not even his pizza here to distract him, there’s nothing much to do other than to wallow in self pity for the rest of the night.

Tomorrow he’ll be over it.

Time passes eventually, even though it feels like an endless drag to Yoongi. When his doorbell rings again only thirty minutes have passed, but to Yoongi it feels closer to three hours. He was already considering calling the pizza place to ask if they forget his order, but it seems like they finally got to him.

After motivating himself enough to get up, he opens the door fully expecting some exhausting looking college student. For the second time this night, he is caught off guard.

It’s Hoseok.

“Uhm.”

Yoongi isn’t quite sure what to say or how to react at all.

“Hi,” Hoseok greets with an awkward smile. He shifts on his feet.

“Hello?” He doesn’t intend for it to come out as a question, but it does. Shouldn’t Hoseok be having the time of his life with whomever?

“I got stood up.”

Oh.

Yoongi frowns. This doesn’t seem reasonable to him.

“I’m sorry,” he offers, even though he’s not really sorry at all. While he can’t really understand how anyone could stand up Hoseok, he can’t help but feel a bit relieved at still having a chance after all.

But Hoseok...Hoseok seems unhappy and uncomfortable and Yoongi feels for him and wants to do nothing more than assure him that it’s not his fault that that person is a complete and utter idiot.

“Wanna come in?” Yoongi eventually asks into the heavy silence and Hoseok perks up.

“Yes, please.”

Immediately, he strolls past Yoongi back into his apartment, as if he belongs there. He finds the way to the living room easily and plops down onto the couch, his blazer riding up a bit.

“Make yourself at home,” Yoongi mumbles to himself as if he’s bothered, but he isn’t really. Hoseok fits into everything perfectly.

When he enters the living room after Hoseok, the other turns to him from where he had positioned himself comfortably on the couch. “What’re you watching?”

Yoongi shrugs. “Nothing, really. Actually, I’m waiting for pizza. Have been since you first came here.”

Hoseok hums. He then sits up straighter and takes off his blazer to put over the armrest. “Maybe you should call them? Or we could just order something together. I could really use some pizza right now.”

Well, Yoongi’s night is certainly taking an interesting turn.

“Uh, sure. We can order together.” As he sits down next to Hoseok, his unexpected guest beams at him happily. “I think they really did forget me, anyway.”

He makes to grab for his phone, but pauses. “Do you want anything specific?”

Hoseok shrugs. “I’ll take whatever you’re having.”

Yoongi nods and dials. He places the order quickly, not bringing up his old, forgotten one in favor of not wanting to create a scene with Hoseok here. It’s just a pizza, anyway. This is much better.

The TV drones on in front of them, neither paying attention as they wait. Yoongi shifts on his seat. He feels so awkward, like he needs to fill the silence but doesn’t know how to. The perfect chance, and he still doesn’t know how to take it.

“So, uh. Wanna talk about it?” He says after a while, figuring anything will do as long as they talk.

Hoseok shrugs halfheartedly, the corners of his mouth tugged downwards the slightest bit. “Nothing much to say. He got back with his ex. Sent me one text about it when I was already there. Should’ve seen it coming, really.”

He.

Yoongi really tries not to be too obvious about how excited he’s to hear that Hoseok is into guys. Fighting down a small smile, he says instead, “That still sucks.”

The awkward silence threatens to take them again, and Yoongi decides it’s now or never. He’s feeling brave, he discovers.

“You know, I wouldn’t have stood you up.”

Hoseok’s head snaps around to face Yoongi, surprise all over his features. “What?”

A blush heats up Yoongi’s face and he ducks his head bashfully, burst of courage gone as fast as it appeared.

“I just, uh, I mean. If we were to go on a date. Hypothetically. I wouldn’t stand you up.” Yoongi wants the ground to swallow him whole.

Except maybe not.

The smile stretching across Hoseok’s beautiful features might make life worth living after all.

“Then we should,” Hoseok says, his full, happy voice finally returning, all wrinkles of upset gone.

Yoongi must be staring as if lost, because Hoseok clarifies with a chuckle, “Go on a date, I mean.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Yoongi is pretty certain he has never nodded this vigorously. “Totally, yes. A date. Let’s do it.”

Hoseok is beaming at him, enamoured. Then he glances down shyly. “You know, I’ve been meaning to ask you out for ages, I just wasn’t sure if you were into guys and didn’t want to make it awkward.”

Yoongi feels like choking. No way. His handsome, sweet, amazing neighbor had actually wanted to go out with him. For ages. Unreal.

“Same here,” he admits then, biting his lip to hold back a grin.

Throwing his head back, Hoseok laughs beautifully. “God, I am so glad I got stood up. This is way better.”

Then he turns back to Yoongi, an epiphany hitting him. “Hey, when the pizza gets here, let’s make this our first date. I’m already all dressed up.” He wiggles in his seat as good as he can, to show his outfit in a flourish.

Yoongi looks down at himself. Sweats and an old, faded band shirt.

Hoseok follows his gaze and promptly giggles. The sound is like music to Yoongi’s ears. “It’s okay, next time you can put extra effort to make up for this. Besides, you’ve been ambushed anyway.”

Next time.

On cue, the doorbell rings.

Hoseok jumps up. “I’ll get it!”

He runs over to the door like an overexcited child, an adorable jump in his steps and Yoongi is so endeared and maybe a little in love. Only a little though, because that’d be too soon. Probably.

But he’ll get there. They both will.
