Apartments and Bumps in the Road

Summary:

Epilogue of sorts to Coffee Cans and Energy Drinks.

Notes:

This is ALL text. No dialogue (it was a personal challenge, but still fair warning).

Anyway this covers them moving in and getting Kicho and things like that.

Work Text:

It was a mutual decision to move in together after graduation and when they got jobs. Katsuki was going straight into hero work—an agency to start in and everything—and Hitoshi thought it'd be interesting to go to university. The hero thing didn't completely work out for him, but he was fine with it. He helped Katsuki when he could and supported him. It hurt a little at first, but Hitoshi powered through it, moved on, and went to university for communications, graphic design, and a little bit of coding. Katsuki was supportive of him going a more normal path, but always said if Hitoshi changed his mind that they'd be a badass team.

They stuck together the three years at UA. There were fights and times that they just tried to forget the other existed, and it was far from perfect all the time. It all worked out, because in essence, no relationship was all rainbows and puppies and there'd always be bumps in the road. Most of them only took a week or two to sort out, but there were exceptions. The nastiest of the fights came at the end of their second year and it carried on through most of the break following the end of that year. Katsuki had said something that just made Hitoshi snap. He'd been on edge since he knew he likely wouldn't get into the hero course at all, and Katsuki did...something. Hitoshi couldn't even remember what it was, but they had a screaming match and didn't talk for months. Eventually they went back and sorted everything out, and a make out session and cuddles might have followed. After the big fight, though, there weren't many and they were few and far between.

As for the moving in, it was originally Katsuki who brought it up, but Hitoshi had been thinking about it for a little while. They were practically at each other's houses all the time anyway, and both of them had stayed overnight the other's at least three times each. There was a lot of talking between them, working out how it would work and going over what they planned to do after graduating. Katsuki already had his laid out, and Hitoshi was working out minor details with his university of choice. They decided to move in together a year after graduation. It gave them time to get used to their new environments, and they still stayed over at each other's houses.

The first apartment picked out was trashed almost immediately. So were the next three. It was hard to find good apartments where they needed it. Hitoshi was going to a university just outside a city, and Katsuki's hero agency was nearby, so they just needed something in that area. Except the area was busy, because of the hero agencies around and university. They managed to find one, and both their mothers were insistent on helping. The moms also might have had something to do with them getting the apartment for a cheaper price. Katsuki's mom was already kind of intimidating on her own and Hitoshi's had a cold stare like a killer. Together they were... something. It was still weird how quickly they became friends. Regardless, they got an apartment almost exactly in the perfect spot. Hitoshi would write it off as extreme luck.

The building was near downtown, and there was usually traffic. Neither of them had a car, and they both took the train if they needed to so traffic was never really an issue. Hitoshi used his bike to get to the campus normally, and Katsuki went to the agency with a small group of other sidekicks that lived nearby. So the set up wasn't that bad and they eventually had getting where they needed to be down to a science.

As for the apartment itself, it was a really nice one considering the original options for that price. The living room was big with large windows that let light in from the main street just outside. A hall led off the side of the living room with doors to the bedroom, bathroom, and study room. The study got split, sort of. Hitoshi got a new nice laptop, a desk, and small bookshelf for all his school things. He took over the back corner, and when they got their cat, Kicho, another part of the room got a cat tree put in. The other half of that room was exercise stuff for Katsuki to use. He tried the gym down the street a few times, and said it was horrible—too many “dudebros” with chicken legs and upper bodies like gorillas, apparently. The room was just the right size for it all, though. The kitchen was perfect size, through an arch off the living room. Counters along three of the four walls, an island in the middle, and a nice fridge and stove. Hitoshi demanded they got a good coffee maker, and he picked it out himself. He also got a microwave and rice cooker. Katsuki made sure they had a tea maker and a few other things Hitoshi didn't bother even touching.

Katsuki had tried convincing Hitoshi that they wouldn't need all the things that made food without much skill, since he could cook well enough—he was very good, but like hell Hitoshi would feed his ego. Hitoshi said that he knew Katsuki would be tired after hero work, and Hitoshi needed to be able to fend for himself. Katsuki denied it, of course, but soon enough Hitoshi was making most of the dinners through the microwave and Katsuki was denying ever saying they wouldn't need it. Hitoshi took it as a win.

Kirishima, Kaminari, Midoriya, and Todoroki ended up helping them move in. It sounds like a big team, but they were on the fifteenth floor and the elevator wasn't too big. No one took the stairs, but they had to assemble all their furniture when they got it up there. There were probably too many fights about what the instructions really said and how to do it. Hitoshi and Midoriya were eventually put in charge of being the official instruction readers and told the others how to put it all together. Hitoshi didn't think there could be that many arguments about how to put a damn coffee table together, but Todoroki and Katsuki proved him wrong. Kaminari and Kirishima had actually pretty much invited themselves to help out, but the extra hands were very helpful when Hitoshi banned Katsuki from putting stuff together after too much shouting. It was their first day there, and he didn't want the neighbors to hate them already.

By late afternoon, they were moved in enough that they could each do their thing without digging through boxes. Only a few boxes were left. All of them except for one were clothes. The other box was Hitoshi's stuff so he'd deal with it later. Katsuki had ended up cooking dinner when he was banned from furniture help and fed everyone. Hitoshi said it was a way of saying thank you, but Katsuki said it was because he was hungry and didn't want to deal with their whiny asses when they didn't get food. Kirishima, Kaminari, and Todoroki seemed floored that Katsuki could cook, but Midoriya probably already knew it to an extent. Kaminari tried to convince Katsuki to come and cook for him and Kirishima, and got jabbed in the side.

Moving in entirely was exhausting, even if Hitoshi didn't carry the really heavy things and Katsuki had help with it. They both collapsed on the couch and watched TV. Hitoshi had made sure that was already set up so he didn't have to try and figure it when he was exhausted. He needed to memorize the different channel numbers, but he found one playing a shitty sitcom that would work even if Katsuki snapped at the characters' stupidity.

Kind of ironically, despite having set up the queen sized bed they bought and putting the sheets on it and everything, they didn't use it that first night. They ended up asleep on the couch—Katsuki half propped up against the arm of the couch and Hitoshi lying on top of him, head on his chest. Kaminari had made some comments when they were figuring out the bed instructions. Hitoshi kicked him in the back of the knees, making him stumble, and told him to save it for Kiri. Kirishima and Kaminari had gone bright red, Katsuki laughed, and Todoroki just gave them a smirk while Midoriya sighed exasperatedly. The two idiots hadn't officially said they were dating, but Hitoshi was observant enough to notice. They then “announced it” formally right there. All shock value was lost since it was pretty obvious to everyone.

Katsuki and Hitoshi both made sure to have the weekend after they moved in on a Friday. They didn't think they'd have as much done as they ended up doing, so it was originally for more unpacking. Now, Hitoshi unpacked his last box and Katsuki tried to sort out the closet. Their clothes were still packed, too, so they had to go through all that and split the closet and dresser. It was easier to just share instead of spend more money on another dresser or extra closet. Sharing also made it easier for Hitoshi to steal Katsuki's clothes, but he didn't tell Katsuki that. The rest of the weekend of just relaxation time and a lot of make out sessions in various places—a few of them might have gotten a little heavier but it wasn't important.

They got Kicho almost a year in, after they knew they were completely settled in their apartment and had a pattern. Hitoshi had looked around the shelters on his own when Katsuki was working and he didn't have work—before his job with the website. He decided it would be better for him to have an idea of what cat to adopt before Katsuki got a chance to meet the cats himself. No offence to Katsuki, but Hitoshi didn't' want him scaring any animals. Katsuki was okay with it, though. When Hitoshi had chosen the cat he wanted, then Katsuki came down to the shelter with him. More people were starting to recognize him as a prohero, and he actually had to take pictures with some of the teens volunteering at the shelter. After that, they met Kicho, and Katsuki approved. Hitoshi did all the paperwork and then they brought Kicho in. They made sure to have cat toys and trees ahead of time, so Kicho could immediately get used to using them.

Hitoshi liked to say he was Kicho's favorite, but he knew it was probably Katsuki since the blond was feeding her most of the time and he knew how cat favorites worked. It took a little while for Kicho to get used to Katsuki's occasional outbursts, and during those moments Hitoshi was definitely her favorite. She did learn to live with it, though, and seemed to accept it.

Almost a year after that, Katsuki was climbing up the ranks of heroes and Hitoshi got his job at the website while also graduating from university. At the graduation, a few people even recognized Katsuki. Hitoshi made a few friends in college, and kept in contact with some of them. Katsuki had new sort-of friends from the agency, and the others from UA.

But what new job conditions and no more school meant was Katsuki was working more and Hitoshi could stay home if he wanted—which he did. Kicho ended up sprawled out on his desk as Hitoshi worked mostly. Sometimes she tried to walk across his keyboard, and that got her put on the floor—usually repeatedly—until she got bored and left. Eventually, Katsuki managed to cut down his hours, which he wasn't exactly too eager to do, but even he knew that working overly hard would be bad. That meant he and Hitoshi got to spend more time together on days they worked. Katsuki got home before Hitoshi could stop doing his own work a lot. On those days, Katsuki went into the study after changing, dragged the extra swivel chair next to Hitoshi and rested his chin on the other's shoulder. Hitoshi didn't know why Katsuki watched him work. All he did was send out and respond to emails, edit layouts, and menial tasks, but Katsuki just said it was interesting. When Hitoshi was done, they ate dinner—made by Katsuki normally, but if he was tired, it was Hitoshi heating something up—and watched either the cheesy sitcoms, animes, or other shows they were invested in.

They might have missed rent a few times, and had to pay double. Kicho might have gotten sick and Hitoshi had to skip days and stay up late to make sure she didn't make anything worse. Katsuki might have broken a few bones in a villain incident and Hitoshi might have freaked out. There might have been a few fights while living together over different things. But like said, there were always bumps in the roads. The rent got paid, Kicho got better and Hitoshi slept a lot, Katsuki's casts got removed and he was fine, and they made up. And maybe made out, but that wasn't important.
