Halloween was supposed to be fun, receiving free candy from complete strangers, dressing up like your favorite character or throwing an old bedsheet over yourself and cutting holes on it to look like a ghost, hearing the squeaky and high laughs from the children walking around with their guardians, it’s awesome.
Unless your boyfriend doesn’t want to go gather candy with you.
Jeongguk is pretty shy actually, he likes to keep it to himself and stays on his lane, but one of the days where he absolutely loses his shit is Halloween, he loves everything about it. The horror movie marathons, the free candy, the fake skeletons sitting on porches, the horrible special effects from shitty 70s series halloween special episodes, the free candy, how everyone looks happier about dressing up, the spooky remixes of popular songs, did he mention the free candy already? Anyways, he loves it.
The problem is that Hoseok isn’t as excited about it as his boyfriend, don’t get him wrong, anything that makes Jeongguk get out of his shell and show his cute bunny teeth with a blinding smile is cherished by Hoseok twenty-four seven, but he feels so slow, he just wants to have a marathon of horrible horror movies and eat popcorn with Jeongguk sitting on his lap, is not too much to ask on a normal day, but it’s Halloween so the younger blatantly ignores Hoseoks attempts to keep him inside.
‘But baby, it’ll be too cold, you could get sick.’
‘That’s what jackets are for, Hobi.’
‘Candy isn’t even worth all that trouble, it gives you cavities.’
‘I brush my teeth regularly, thank you.’
‘What about the movies? We gonna miss all of those because you’re out and about, looking for candy.’
‘Hoseok, the only thing that’s on TV on Halloween week are horror movies, believe me, we won’t miss anything’
‘Gukkie, what about the dogs? We can’t leave them alone.’
‘I’m painting them black and drawing bones on them so they can be my bone buddies.’
‘First of all, just because you’re an art student it doesn’t mean you can paint our dogs, second, never say bone buddies again.’
Needless to say, Hoseok failed. But he ended up going along with Jeongguk because he didn’t want to let him wander around alone. And Hoseok prohibited Jeongguk from going near the dogs with any kind of paint, asking to leave the poor dogs to their naps.
Jeongguk is dressed as Jack Skellington and holy fuck , he looks good.
The pinstripe suit he borrowed from Hoseoks closet - ‘Why do you even have this?’ ‘I had a dark past, don’t judge me.’ - fitted him well enough, the skull face paint was a work of art, you couldn’t expect less from an art student, and just like that he turned into the best character of any Tim Burton movie ever, in Hoseoks opinion. And he got the classic pumpkin container - recipient? - to hold all his candy.
Hoseok melted at the sight of the full costume, he sure did, he looked so cute all excited and dressed up, but his boyfriend also looked so hot dressed like that, and when he smirked? Hoseok was turning into a skeleton himself, bone per boner.
What? He thought it was a clever joke, Jeongguk glared at him.
They went around the building, knocking on doors that were decorated, going down some floors, knocking on more doors. That was one advantage of living on a big apartment complex, a lot of people lived there and most were pretty festive when it came to holidays - maybe a little too festive in Hoseoks opinion, one of their neighbours installed a huge christmas tree on their floor last winter, it ended up blocking the elevators, it was a mess -, that was the perfect formula for gathering more than enough candy.
But Jeongguk still wanted more, he wanted to go around showing off his amazing costume, getting compliments left and right, filling his bucket - bowl? - with more and more candy as the night goes on.
And that’s exactly what they do, well, what Jeongguk does, Hoseok just tagged along to watch over his boyfriend and see the cute poses he did while asking for candy and the bunny smiles he gave to kids when they asked for a picture with the real Jack Skellington, Jeongguk was glowing with happiness.
It was almost 3AM when they decided to stop the candy hunt and go back to their apartment, go back to their dogs, see how much candy Jeongguk got and probably not fall asleep due to a sugar rush.
They arrive tired ready to throw themselves on their bed and sleep forever, but Jeongguk still has to take off all the paint from his face, undress, take a shower… Just thinking about it already makes him tired.
Hoseok places the pumpkin bag - pot? - on the kitchen counter and goes to the bathroom to see his boyfriend with his face half covered by paint, he leaves a kiss on the bare-faced side and hugs Jeongguk, who now wore sweatpants and a super-hero shirt, cute, Hoseok thought.
‘Thanks for coming with me tonight, Hobi.’ - he says, wiping the last bit of paint from his cheek and smiles - ‘It wouldn’t be as fun if you didn’t tag along.’
Hoseok mirrors his smile - ‘It’s the least I could do, baby.’ - he places more kisses on Jeongguks cheek - ‘Besides, it gave me the opportunity to make a billion bone jokes, it was awesome.’
Jeongguk rolls his eyes - ‘And you complain about me calling the dogs bone buddies? Mature.’
‘You love it.’
The younger sighs - ‘I sure do'.
