“You never did actually bend the knee, you know.” This time the teasing was apparent in her voice. She looked at him, eyebrow lifted with the same haughtiness she’d wielded the first time he’d ever set foot in her throne room, when she’d deigned to descend the stairs and stand toe to toe with him, a bastard. He stared at her quietly, mouth twitching. He pressed his lips together to contain the smile, mustering his characteristic solemnity.
“Aye, you’re right,” he said finally, with a gravity that made her face go slack of humor. “This will work better with me on my knees.”
