Work Text:
“Chuuya…” Kunikida broke the silence that had existed between him and his redheaded lover. Both had their eye closed, lying together hand in hand on a blanket they had just used for a small picnic in a nearby park.
“Yeah?” Chuuya asked, opening turning lazily on his side to face Kunikida, a soft smile curled along his lips.
Kunikida followed suit, his own jade orbs meeting tired looking azure, “You know French, right?”
He laughed, “I do~” he answered playfully, “Why do you ask?”
“How well?”
“Eh...Some say I’m fluent but...I think I know enough to hold a conversation you know?”
“Oh, alright then.” Kunikida laid back down and turned away from Chuuya.
To most people, this would have been seen as offensive, confusing, or weird. But Chuuya had known the idealist for almost three years now, so he smirked knowing that this was his boyfriend’s way of saying “I wanted to ask you something else, but I’m too nervous to say anything.” In the beginning, Chuuya could never imagine that such a practical man could ever be so nervous about trivial things, yet here he was now, turned away childishly pretending he had already fallen asleep- just to avoid asking.
Though, simply asking Kunikida to tell him wouldn't work. He'd just act even more stubborn. So Chuuya was usually left to try and figure it out for himself, or become his mind reader of sorts, basically. What did he want to ask Chuuya this time? He had asked him about Chuuya’s knowledge in French for a-
Chuuya grinned once it finally clicked. Kunikida could be so cute and silly.
“Doppo~” he purred, “If you want me to teach you French, you can just ask~.” he leaned over towards the blonde, drawing small circles with his finger around his broad shoulder.
Kunikida shot up immediately, “I-I didn't, I mean I…”
Chuuya only laughed again, “Really, Doppo, it's fine! If that's what you really want, I wouldn't ever say no to you.” They gazed to each other’s eyes again, listening to the distant sounds of the trees around them swaying in the wind and the slight rippling of the lake not too far from where they were. After what felt like hours of compatible silence, Kunikida finally nodded. “Good boy.” Chuuya cooed, “Now, how about we turn this into a bit of a game? You ask me a word or phrase you want to know, and I'll tell you how you'd say it in French. Sound fair?”
“Perfect.” came the idealist’s reply. He took out his matching notebook from his pocket, opening it to an empty page only titled “French translation.”
“You've been meaning to ask this for a while, I see~”
“Leave me alone…”
“Laissez-moi tranquille!” Chuuya mocked.
Kunikida’s face screamed concern and confusion, “Sorry...What was that?’
“Leave me alone in French, silly.” Chuuya fell back onto the blanket, “That's one, give me another.”
“Okay...um...how would you say, teach?’
Chuuya feigned thinking about it, “ Enseigner, ” he finally replied.
Kunikida had already written both ‘Leave me alone’ and ‘teach’ in his ideal, “How would...you say, I dunno...silly?”
“ Loufoque .”
“Huh, how would you say, excuse?
“That's Prétexte.”
Kunikida wrote these as well. They sounded so natural coming from Chuuya. It was almost hard to believe it wasn't his first language.
“How would you say, smile?”
Chuuya pointed to his own, “ Sourire. ”
“And laugh?”
He acted this out as well, “ Rire! “
Kunikida thought for a moment, “Do you know how to say peace?”
Chuuya took it a bit further with, “ La Tranquillité ” rather than ‘ paix ,’ followed by the hand signal for said word.
The blonde wrote them as he heard, asking The shorter male how to spell each one correctly. He loved how each simple word sounded in the other language- no. He loved how Chuuya’s lovely voice made it sound. As though French was merely a language he made up. He wanted to hear the executive say more.
Rather than ask this time, Kunikida merely pointed towards the nearby lake. Chuuya followed his finger to see what it was.
“Oh that’s a simple one- La Laque.”
Kunikida pointed upward.
“Uh...if it’s the sky you're pointing to, then Ciel. If it’s that tree then it’s Arbre.”
“Sorry, I should have been more specific.” Kunikida laughed nervously. He rested his index finger on his chin in thought, barely noticing the sly smile Chuuya was giving him.
“Heh, that's an easy one... Mon Amour.” taking Kunikida’s hand in his own, causing said blonde to blush.
“I...I didn't point to anything...w-what does that mean?” the blonde stuttered.
“Oh, désolé , I thought you were pointing to yourself... Mon amour means ‘my love.”
If it were possible, which he was now sure it was, Kunikida’s heart raced even faster than before. “Well then...how do you say...hand?”
“ Main.” and Chuuya held up their connected ones.
“And... hold my hand?”
“ Tiens ma main …” this time, Chuuya reached for Kunikida’s other hand, causing him to drop the pen and the ideal he had been holding.
He didn't mind.
“Can you say...hold me?” Kunikida leaned in a bit closer, waiting to hear the man say it.
“...heh... Tiens moi, mais j'ai besoin que tu me retiennes~” Chuuya smiled playfully . Kunikida felt as though he knew what the extra phrase meant. He removed his hands from Chuuya’s own, only to rest them on his lower back, laying back down on the blanket to pull Chuuya on top of him.
“Is that what you meant?”
Chuuya slowly entangled his own hands in soft blonde hair, “ Oui .”
“Tell me how to say, beautiful.”
“ Belle .”
“ Belle .” the blonde repeated this time. “And, lovely?”
“ Charmant , just like you.” Chuuya murmured.
Kunikida smiled fondly,“How about, stay?”
“ Rester .” came the answer. Chuuya moved himself further up Kunikida’s chest, snuggling into the crook of his neck. “ Restez avec moi.”
“ Stay...with me?” Kunikida questioned.
Chuuya planted a small kiss on his throat, “Very good~.” he purred.
“Please stay with me, Chuuya.” Kunikida shivered slightly as warm lips continued peppering his neck in kisses.
“ Reste avec moi, Doppo.” Chuuya brushed his nose over his lover’s jaw, chuckling as he feels it tighten beneath him.
“Just, just kiss me, Chuuya.” Kunikida growled.
Juste, juste embrasse moi, Doppo~” Chuuya mocked him, before doing as he was asked. Folding his arms over the taller’s chest, he leans down to meet his lips, blissful sighs passing through them as their lips are sealed. Rather than a fitting ‘French kiss’ for their little occasion, their kiss is soft, tongues playfully darting in and out simply to remind themselves of the other’s taste. Chuuya leans up to break it, slowly as though he's hesitant to do so (which he probably is). He smiles lovingly, and Kunikida can't stop the urge to give it back.
“Tell me...how to say, I love you .” Kunikida asks him.
Chuuya scoffs,“That's so simple. Especially for French.” he sat up straddling Kunikida’s hips, picking up his discarded ideal and writing a few things down.
He didn't mind though, in fact- this wasn't the first time Chuuya had written in his ideal.
“It's a love language, Doppo. So, try another phrase.” he explained as he continued writing, “Maybe something like, Sans toi, je ne suis rien, or ‘Without you, I am nothing.”
Kunikida sits up without letting the redhead fall off of him, “Huh, that one's pretty accurate...is that what you're writing now?” Chuuya smiles and nods, still writing.
“Oh! Even better! Je suis fou de toi, which means, I'm crazy about you- which I definitely am~” he adds this with a wink, smiling victoriously when it causes the taller man to blush. Chuuya finally reached the bottom of the page and hands the ideal back to Kunikida. “I wrote a few other phrases in there, too...I mean….only if you, want to read them or anything. I think you'll appreciate the last one.” Now it's Chuuya’s turn to blush, his face almost matches his hair when he does. Kunikida smiles as he looks through the list:
Je t’aime pour toujours: I love you for ever
Je t’aime plus chaque jour: I love you more each day
Je suis fou de toi: I’m crazy about you
Je t’adore: I adore you
Tu me rends gaga: you make me stupid
Je veux que tu m'épouses:
Sans toi, je ne suis rien: Without you, I am nothing
Tu me rends tellement heureux: You make me so happy
Tu es mon idéal: You are my ideal
The idealist’s blood caused his face to glow once again as he reread the last phrase. He really did appreciate it, but how could he not? Chuuya had written it for him after all.
“Chuuya, why did you leave one of them blank? What does that mean?” Kunikida questioned
“I want you to marry me.” Chuuya purred.
“…”
“Doppo, did you hear me?”
“...that was...a little uh, sudden, don't you think?”
Chuuya laughed, flattening himself on top of him again, “No, silly. That's what the phrase means.”
“ Oh.” Kunikida sighed in relief, sitting up completely so that he was face to face with the shorter man. “So why didn't you write the translation?”
Chuuya blinked, then, slowly brought his lips back into a smile, wrapping his arms loosely around Kunikida’s neck, “Isn't it just a little obvious? It's a bit of a test, this time, you give me the answer.”
Kunikida grinned as he wrote down the final translation. Chuuya covered his face in soft kisses when he checked his answer.
Je veux que tu m'épouses: Oui
