The sunlight streamed through the only window of the bathroom, the chirping of birds and the gentle rustling of leaves amplifying the sunny peace outside. Cumulus clouds floated slowly along the vivid blue sky.
But this is only the calm before the storm, as trite as it sounds.
Diane glanced through the crack of the bathroom’s door. Harlequin slept soundly on their shared bed, the moss green blanket only covering his lower half. His chest gently heaved up and down with each breath. Diane can’t help but blush at how adorable he looks in his slightly oversized baby blue sweater and with his tousled hair. She smiled endearingly at him before closing the door and locking it.
She took a deep breath and walked over to the sink. She opened the small package and dumped them on the counter. Out came a small plastic cup, a dropper, and a pregnancy testing stick.
She felt herself trembling slightly with a mix of excitement and nervousness. It’s their honeymoon week and it’s been a couple of days since they…did it. And Diane wanted to make sure if something did happen.
She remembered all the dreams they talked about when they were still just lovers. They talked about their dream house, a simple yet majestic flower garden, how they want to travel the world if given the chance, a peaceful life in the outskirts of a city, and of course, having children.
She zoned out with a smile on her face, excited for what the future holds for the both of them. Eventually, she shook her head lightly, bringing herself back to reality.
Diane stared at the pale-yellow liquid in the plastic cup and dipped the dropper. She dropped the liquid on the testing stick and waited.
“With the power vested in me by the Divine Supreme, I now pronounce you husband and wife.”
It’s all blurry and muffled. He can see shades of green, blue, and brown with specks of pastel colors raining around him. He can faintly hear the cheers of the crowd around them and the priest who recited the necessary vows. He can feel tiny rivulets flowing down his cheeks and a joyful grin on his lips. Harlequin wiped his eyes as he gazed lovingly at his bride clad in pink and white.
He took Diane’s hands in his and placed a loving kiss on her knuckles. She then pulled him towards her and gently kissed his forehead. Crimson tainted their cheeks as they locked gazes, ignoring the crowd who cheered them on to kiss.
They smiled fondly at each other and leaned in. He closed his eyes, waiting for her lips to touch his.
But it never happened.
A shrill shriek filled the air and everything around him crumbled and he’s now on the floor, his legs tangled in a moss green blanket.
Harlequin slowly sat up, gently rubbing the back of his head. His head spun, attempting to make sense of everything that just happened. He was getting married to Diane and everything suddenly fell apart. He felt his heart skyrocket with nervousness and his eyes prickle with tears, sorrow filling his heart due to a shattered dream.
Or at least that’s what it looks like until his vision fell on a gold band on his left ring finger. He blinked a couple of times before letting out a startled yelp as he saw a cheerful Diane sprint out of the bathroom and fling herself onto him.
He blinked a few times before it finally clicked.
Oh wait, we just got married last week. And we just… Harlequin blushed as his train of thought went you-know-where.
“Harlequin, look!” Diane pried herself away from him and excitedly showed him a small white bar. He blinked dumbfoundedly at her smiling face, the shriek from earlier vaguely resonating at the back of his head. He figured out it was her. But judging from her demeanor, it’s nothing to be worried about.
“What’s…going on?” She pouted childishly, her cheeks puffing up adorably as she pointed firmly at the bar in her hand with a clipped hum as if trying to prove a point. Diane gazed intensely at him with barely restrained excitement as he stared at the pregnancy test stick, trying to comprehend.
He blinked once, twice, thrice; and his eyes widened at the fourth blink. Harlequin’s jaw fell open as he pointed to the stick, then to Diane, and then back to the stick; Diane’s nods are getting quicker and smiles getting wider with each point until they both screamed in happiness. Harlequin lunged towards Diane and they jumped all over the place while spinning in circles before falling back on the bed. They hugged each other tightly and chuckled happily in each other’s arms.
As soon as they calmed down, they stared into each other’s eyes and shared a slow, chaste kiss. They grinned at each other as Harlequin pulled Diane close to his chest. He played with her brown locks.
“So, I guess that makes us parents, huh?”
“Yeah. But…” He sensed her mood and heard her voice mellow down a bit.
“What’s wrong, Diane?” He pulled away a bit to see her face properly.
“They say that pregnancy is rough.” She looked at him with worry. “Do you think we’ll make it, Harlequin?” He clicked his tongue and smiled fondly at her while caressing her hair. He lovingly pecked her forehead and smiled.
“‘til death do us part, remember? No matter what happens, I’ll always be by your side, okay?” She blinked twice before smiling and burying her face into his chest. They sighed contently and wordlessly cuddled for a few more minutes until they decided that it’s breakfast time.
