promise

Summary:

i promise.

Notes:

i've been in such a writing mood lately, but i've also been in an even bigger writer's block. this is all that i could manage without ripping my hair out and i know yoonjoon isn't the biggest ship, but i melt for that shit.

surprisingly, this is the first thing i've written that doesn't have angst, heartbreak, and/or death! so, enjoy that while it lasts.

Work Text:

he knew it in the way namjoon’s nose twitched when he woke up. the soft stirring of sheets dragging along skin as they each peeled their bodies from the haven of their bed each morning, each wearing a matching pair of smiles that created a promise to return each and every night, no matter where their days lead them.

he knew it in the way namjoon flinched when the light switched was flipped on in the bathroom, and the younger boy struggled with turning on the sink and finding his toothbrush through the temporary blindness. though yoongi loved namjoon to death, he could always keep himself composed enough to wait to exchange a morning kiss after each of them had brushed their teeth.

he knew it in the way namjoon often spilled milk off the side of the bowl every time he poured them each a bowl of cereal in the morning. he’d been prepping their cereal for countless mornings, yet he never could quite capture the necessary aim to avoid even the simplest of messes.

he knew it in the way namjoon smiled through each bite of cereal, often causing a struggle through eating since he didn’t even bother to swallow his food before speaking most of the time. still, yoongi found great joy in watching the boy attempt to juggle both a conversation and a smile for him each and every day.

he knew it in the way namjoon always struggled to find his car keys in the morning. namjoon had never agreed with the habit of leaving his keys on the hook. yoongi would make sure to return them to their designated location by the door every chance he got, but even that was often a difficult task seeing as namjoon seemed to lose them before he could even chuck his feet off by the door.

he knew it in the way namjoon always returned home singing. yoongi spent hours a day producing music from their studio at home, and even when he went into work he would often find himself home before namjoon, only ever really going for necessary meetings since he had more comfort and equipment in his workspace there, and namjoon could always be heard singing from the other side of the door as his key turned the lock to come inside.

he knew it in the way namjoon would urge him away from his work, even sometimes throwing in the promise of a heated night or at least a very tasty back massage that he knew yoongi crumbled so easily to. namjoon was very talented in any art he sought out to master, and his hands were among his most prized possessions.

he knew it in the way namjoon would order take out for the both of them when they couldn’t be bothered to cook. namjoon would politely pretend like he couldn’t see yoongi doing work from the laptop whenever he closed it up to make room for boxes of food as they gathered together to eat on the couch. he knew yoongi’s work was important to him, and namjoon was very respectful and good about not only knowing when to pull him away from it, but also when to leave him be.

he knew it in the way namjoon would obnoxiously sing loudly in the shower, often off-key enough to the point that he knew yoongi would come in to tell him to knock it off, namjoon-ah (a situation which, of course, always led to namjoon being presented with a grand opportunity to pull yoongi into the shower along with him, clothed and all).

he knew it in the way namjoon’s fingers would wonder over his arms and face as they settled in for the night, love spilling out from every stroke of a finger and every catch of a breath between the two of them as they talked about everything and nothing at all.

he knew it in the way namjoon kissed him at night. yoongi always said that namjoon tasted like the future, and namjoon said yoongi tasted like the beginning.

he knew it in the way namjoon pulled him close every night. it was a promise to always stay.
