Work Text:
It was pleasantly warm in the apartment. Jin was in the kitchen, baking gingerbread men, the smell of cinnamon and ginger spilling out from under the door and spreading through the living room, while you were decorating the tree and singing along to your Christmas playlist. This year was the first time you would celebrate the holidays with Jin. Even though the two of you hadn’t been dating for much longer than six months, you couldn’t help imagining what it would be like in five, six years time. Maybe Jin would be in the kitchen baking his gingerbread cookies, like he was now, wearing a cream turtleneck, glasses, and a cute apron. Maybe there would be a dog somewhere, examining the boxes of Christmas decorations, or sleeping on the floor at your feet. Maybe there would even be a small child, helping you hang baubles and candy canes in the tree.
You took the final bauble out of the box and tried to hang it on one of the higher branches of the tree, standing on your tiptoes to reach it. After a few attempts, some frustrated huffs and soft curses under your breath, you realized you were, indeed, to short to reach it. At that moment, as if you had called his name, Jin walked through the door, two mugs filled to the brim with hot chocolate in his hands. You couldn’t help but smile as he came over to you and handed you one.
“You can’t reach it, can you?” he asked, tone slightly mocking, his eyes glinting.
You shook your head, looking down.
“Here, let me do it,” he said, taking the decoration and handing you his mug.
Of course, he hung it on the branch without the slightest difficulty, which made him grin back at you. You rolled your eyes as you handed him his mug, and then you took a few steps back to properly admire the now fully decorated tree. Jin moved to stand beside you, sliding his free arm around your waist and pulling you into his side.
“You did a great job,” Jin said. “It’s beautiful.”
You nuzzled your head up against his shoulder.
“Jin,” you said softly, not looking away from the tree.
“Hmm,” he hummed.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.” You could hear that he was smiling.
And that is when you realized you were perfectly content with how things were, exactly like this, with just you and Jin and hot chocolate, and your favorite Christmas songs playing in the background. Everything was perfect, and you had faith that a few years from now, everything would still be perfect.
