Work Text:
"Yoongi! Yoongi!" Taehyung called out over crowds of people, having seen his childhood and best friend, and lover, after he doesn't even know how many years.
Yoongi was finally coming home after years in Seoul and was, no doubt about it, excited. He was excited to see his boyfriend, best friend, childhood friend, his everything, after oh so long, and just couldn't wait as he checked out his passport and got his luggage. It has been so so many years.
The man he addresses finally turns around, spotting the boy who frantically runs towards him, a wide boxy smile and unmeasurable excitement flowing from him.
As he exits, Yoongi spots Taehyung, amongst a group of others, and his heart starts beating rapidly against his chest. He'd miss him, so much.
Taehyung stops himself right in front of Yoongi, and catches his breath, before standing up straight and looking at him again.
Speed walking to Taehyung, Yoongi releases his luggage and waits for Taehyung to see him. He waits for Taehyung to notice that he's here, he's back.
He can't believe he's seeing his boyfriend in the flesh after all those years. He's excited, he wants to jump on him and kiss him senseless. But he waits, waits for the other to initiate it.
Yoongi can't believe hes seeing him again. It feels almost like a dream. He wants Taehyung to wrap him in a hug and never let go. He wants to share everything with him, catch up on everything he's missed.
"How may I help you?" Yoongi asks with a small smile, confusing Taehyung to no end. He's thought of this reunion, played so many different scenarios, thought of every possibility. This isn't one of them.
"Hi there, are you looking for someone?" Taehyung asks, turning to Yoongi. Yoongi's excitement falters. "It's not funny, Tae." Yoongi fakes annoyance, looking at him expectantly.
Yoongi holds the gummy smile Taehyung missed so so much, looking at him lost. He wants this to be a prank, for him to say "got you!" and laugh, laugh the laugh he loved and missed and have wanted to hear for years.
What Yoongi doesn't expect, is for Taehyung to stand in shock at his words, like they've never met. The same face, same name, although aged just a little, but Yoongi could never not recognise him.
"Do you... know me?" Taehyung struggles, searching for any glimpse of recognition in the eyes he saw full of tears and love the last time they saw eachother.
"Excuse me? Please don't call me that. Do you want an autograph or something?" An autograph? Why would Taehyung be offering autographs? Really, Yoongi thinks, he shouldn't take a joke this far, especially after so many years.
"No, but you seem to know me. Min Yoongi, Producer, a pleasure." He says, the line sounding far too practiced.
Yoongi looks at him impatiently, he's honestly ready to just kiss him, and end whatever bullshit he thought was funny. But something in Taehyung's eyes told him not to. His eyes, once full of cheer, excitement, and childlike innocence, was now cold and lifeless, and the man in front of him was clearly putting on an act. Was this not his Taehyung?
Taehyung doesn't get it. Same face, same name, same job, same man he grew up with and fell in love with who loved back and promised to come back. What's happening?
"Tae... hyung ssi, i'm a fan." Yoongi says. He's not sure whether he's saying it to play along, or to confirm his suspicions, but it seemed to appease the man in front of him. Taehyung smiled, a smile far different from the one Yoongi grew up with. His boxy smile of cheer and enthusiasm hidden away, instead a professional nod took its place.
"Um... Where are you from?" Taehyung asks, wanting to find, some sort of error, to find something wrong, to prove to himself that maybe this isnt his Yoongi.
"Where did you grow up in?" Yoongi questions, faking his curiosity. He waits with bated breath, hope of Taehyung merely messing with him slipping away the more he got to look at him.
"Seoul." The man says, once again, with that gummy smile. Oh. Taehyung falls apart on the inside, realizing this man indeed did not grow up in Daegu, with him.
"Seoul." Taehyung had said, quickly signing his phone cover. Yoongi looked at the signature in disbelief. Taehyung's signature had grown much more smooth, he obviously writes it alot, instead of once having to focus on each individual letter to write his name in his own style. Yoongi feels like he doesn't know him.
And then his phone rings.
It's their song.
The song they titled theirs.
The song they grew up listening to and singing to each other when the world seemed to be against them.
The song that he'd play over and over again night after night missing his boyfriend terribly and wanting him with him right then and there.
"I'm sorry, i'm in a rush, do you have any more questions?" Yoongi asks, hanging up and pulling up his luggage handle.
"Ah, I have to go now. Thank you for supporting me." Taehyung said in a hurry, quickly hanging up and gesturing over to his friends.
"That song, what is it?" Taehyung needs to hear it from him. He needs to hear him say something. This is their song.
Yoongi thinks of what could be his last question. What could confirm all suspicions. "What's your ringtone song called?" He ended up saying.
"It's a song very close to me, and my boyfriend, Park Jimin. He's a dancer, you might've heard of him."
"Ah, my boyfriend Jeon Jungkook introduced it to me. He's a singer, you might have listened to his songs before."
Taehyung's heart shatters and the world around him falls. He stands there as Yoongi tells him the song name, the same song name he's memorised, etched into his heart and mind forever.
And like that, Taehyung apologises and leaves. Leaves Yoongi and his shattered world. His dull colourless world without Taehyung in his life. Without their song. It wasn't their song here. He wasn't his, not here. Yoongi sighs, confused. He looks around, and the world blurs. He's crying. Of course he is.
Yoongi apologises and leaves, leaving Taehyung there, confused. Utterly confused. Lost, he realises, is the word. He's lost. And all he seems to be able to do after that realisation, is cry.
It almost felt like he didn't belong in this world.
