Playground Grenade

Summary:

Katsuki gets an incredibly surprising phone call while on duty.

Notes:

Written for the Kacchako Secret Santa for novocaine_sea. I was internally screaming while writing this because it's you. I hope you like it.

Work Text:

Katsuki grudgingly put down his convenience store sandwich to answer his phone.  His phone only rang while on duty if four people were calling; his Agency, his parents, Ochako, or his daughter's school.  He checked the caller ID to see his daughter's school calling.

“Hello, this is Bakugou,” he said.

“Good afternoon Bakugou-san, I'm calling to inform you that we are requesting a parent meeting after school hours in regards to your daughter.  She was involved in an altercation during recess that involved quirks.  We would like to discuss her actions and potential consequences,” the woman on the other line said.

“Shoukou?  She got into a fight?” Bakugou asked.  He couldn't keep the incredulity out of his voice.

“That's correct, Bakugou-san.  We have attempted to contact your wife, but have received no answer,” she said.

“Ochako is involved in a raid at the moment.  She wouldn't have her phone on her.  I can come in though.  What time?” he asked.

“Four o'clock, Bakugou-san.”

The line went dead.

Katsuki hummed as he stowed his phone away.  Shoukou didn't have his temperament.  At all.  So it was shocking to hear she'd been in a fight of all things.  And he was certainly curious as to who won.  Katsuki hopped down from the building ledge to the sidewalk below to finish his patrol.

At three, Katsuki concluded his patrol and returned to the agency to change out of his hero uniform.

He changed quickly and left, waving good-bye to the receptionists.  He headed for the train station, and left Ochako a voicemail on his way there.

“Hey babe, I know it'll be a while before you get this, but Shoukou got into a fight at school.  Wild, right?  Anyway, I gotta meet with her homeroom teacher or some shit.  I'll call you again when the meeting is over and let you know what went down.  Love you.”

It was a thirty minute train ride from the agency to Shoukou's school.  Katsuki tried to use that time to center himself in preparation for the meeting ahead.  It wouldn't do to lose his cool and have his behavior reflect on Shoukou.  She was a good girl, more level-headed than Katsuki, but confident and fearless.  He liked to think she was the perfect combination of her parents.  The same with her quirk.  Anything she touched with her whole hand could be made to explode with a snap of her fingers.

Which doubly worried Katsuki.  Her quirk was powerful, she knew better.  They'd impressed on her that her quirk was not to be used lightly.  And she'd gone and used it on a classmate.  Katsuki vaguely wondered if this was what life had been like for his own parents when he was a child.

Katsuki hurried through the school halls until he found the principal's office.  He spotted Shoukou sitting outside, swinging her legs to and fro in the too tall chair.

“Papa!”

“Shoukou!  They said you were in a fight!  Did you win?” he asked as he rushed up to her.  That was not at all what he was planning on saying.  Ochako was going to kill him.  Shoukou hopped up from her chair, her arms raised for attention.  Before Katsuki could scoop her up into a hug, the door opened and the principal stood before them, frowning sternly at them both.  Katsuki herded Shoukou into the office and sat down in one of the empty seats.

“Bakugou-san, would you like your daughter to explain what happened today?” the principal asked.  Katsuki noticed that his toupee was loose.

“Sure,” he said and turned to give Shoukou his attention, “lay it on me squirt.”

“Well, Asami-chan and I were talking about our favorite heroes.  I said that Ground Zero and Uravity are my favorites.  But Deku is good too,” she began, “but then Kaname-kun said that Ground Zero should be a villain because he can make explosions.  And then I told him he was stupid because I can make things explode and I wanna be a hero.  And then he called me stupid because girls are bad heroes.  And I said that that was a lie.  And he pushed me and asked me what I was gonna do about it.  He said that girls are bad heroes because none of the top five heroes are girls.  So I pushed him back.  And then he called Uravity stupid and that's when I punched him.”

It seemed pretty straightforward to Katsuki, but she had obviously left something out, and he wasn't too happy about it.

“Did you leave something out?” he asked her.  Shoukou blushed and suddenly she couldn't meet his eyes.

“Um, well, Kaname-kun tried to use his claws on me, and I threw a ball at him and made it blow up in his face.”

“I see,” Katsuki said.  He said nothing else to her, but turned his attention back to the principal. “And what do Kaname-kun's parents have to say about what happened?”

“Well Kaname-san is pushing for expulsion.  However, this is the first incident of poor behavior that Bakugou-kun has exhibited while attending this school.  Kaname-kun also has a history of instigating fights,” the principal said. “I personally would rather give Bakugou-kun a week of in-house suspension, and Kaname-kun would have three days of in-house suspension.  We would be keeping them separated of course.”

“Sounds fair.  And we will be having a very long discussion with her about appropriate quirk use later,” Katsuki said with a glance at Shoukou, her big red eyes were shiny with unshed tears.

“Thank you for coming, Bakugou-san.  I'm glad we were able to come to a decision on this matter.”

The adults stood and Katsuki reached out to shake the principal's hand.  The door suddenly flew open and a blur that was Ochako burst open.

“Shoukou!  Shoukou!  Papa told me you were in a fight!  Did you win?” she asked in a rush.  Her hands ran over Shoukou's face and arms, checking for injuries.  The principal gave the whole family an unimpressed look as Katsuki burst into laughter.  Maybe, for once, he wasn't in trouble for asking Shoukou the same question.

“Yes, mama, I did.”

He wrapped an arm around Ochako, and held Shoukou up with the other.  He loved his ladies, and wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.
