Work Text:

Shouta wasn't able to get out much when he was younger. A combination of a strict father and always being sick stunted his ability to enjoy the outdoors, especially when it was snowing. Even now, though he lives with his mother, who was considerably more relaxed, he's found himself avoiding the outdoors.

His friend Hizashi told him he would come over today. He relatively enjoys being around Hizashi, especially since he's just about his only friend in the hero course. He promised Shouta that he would show him how to have "real fun on a snow day", but Shouta was skeptical.

He puts himself in a sweater and a grey puffy jacket, finally wrapping his favorite tan scarf around his neck and putting on his gloves. He had no idea how cold it would be, or how well he could possibly tolerate it, so he definitely wanted to prepare for whatever frozen hell he was about to experience.

Hizashi knocks at his door around 11:30, give or take a minute. Shouta ties his boots up and walks to the door slowly, opening it at the same pace.

"Hey, Shouta!" Hizashi greets, eyes sparkling with excitement. As if that didn't give it away, he was practically vibrating in his spot from pure joy. "Ready to go?"

"Yeah," Shouta mumbles as he shuffles through the doorway and into the almost empty hallway of his apartment complex's floor.

"You're gonna love the snow, Shouta," Hizashi smiles. "I mean, it's cold as hell, I won't lie. But it's pretty cool to play in! Especially if you don't really get to be in it often."

Shouta hums as Hizashi goes on about the snow, his favorite activities, drinks and foods to eat when it's cold; practically anything Hizashi could link with the previous topic would fly out of his mouth.

"And then I said—" he pushes the door open for Shouta. "— 'there's no way I can't get him a lifetime membership to this cafe'!"

"Hizashi,"

Hizashi shuts up, waiting for Shouta.

"We're outside."

"Oh," Hizashi observes.

"OH!" he grabs Shouta's gloved hands and jogs to the front of the complex, blanketed in a few inches of snow. He swiftly grabs some snow and packs it into a sphere, placing it in Shouta's hands.

"It's a snowball," Hizashi smiles. "For snowball fights, and all that."

"I know what a snowball is." Shouta eyes the ball for a second, then lazily gazes at Hizashi. "Did you want me to throw this at you?"

"Yeah!" Hizashi bounds over to the other side of the complex. Shouta watches intently as Hizashi creates a snow fort, probably to hide behind. "Hit me with your best shot!"

He thinks it's quite silly, really, to play in the snow like this. But he can tell Hizashi is having fun, so the least he could do is play along.

Shouta winds his arm back, attempting to focus his aim on Hizashi's forehead, and throws the ball as hard as he can. His aim is spot on, catching Hizashi right in the middle of Shouta's target.

"Shit, good aim, Shouta!" Hizashi encourages. "But if you think you're gonna win because of that, you're mistaken."

Shouta smirks. "Is that a bet?"

"Yeah." Hizashi starts packing snowballs. "If you win, I'll treat you to lunch."

"And if you win?"

"You go to karaoke with me and Tensei next week."

"... Fine. How do we know when we've won?"

Hizashi thinks for a moment. "When the other one gives, I guess."

"Sounds good to me."

Hizashi grins devilishly as he hurls a snowball in Shouta's direction. A close miss, it whiffs past Shouta's arm and hits the ground with a soft thud. Shouta smiles to himself as he hurls one back, hitting Hizashi in the arm.

Shouta has a clear advantage over Hizashi. Even if he hasn't exactly had a snowball fight in the past, his reflexes and strength outmatch Hizashi's own by a long shot. His snowballs go farther, quicker, and he knows it. And a small part of him thinks Hizashi knows it too.

After a while, the coldness begins to seep into his clothes. His fingers seem to be frozen and he feels like his eyes are too, but he refuses to give up when he can tell he's this close to victory. Shouta does his damndest to form another snowball with what little feeling he has left in his hands, packs it, and aims at Hizashi.

"I give!"

Shouta relaxes a bit. "You what?"

"I give." Hizashi raises his hands in defeat. "You win, Shouta."

"So soon? I thought you could take a few more snowballs."

"Nah, I'm done." Hizashi stands up, dusting the snow off of his clothes. "You put up one hell of a fight, Shouta! I'm impressed! You sure this is your first snowball fight?"

"Yeah, I'm sure," Shouta answers. "You sure you've done this before? Because it felt like you haven't."

"Very funny." Hizashi rolls his eyes. "You ready for lunch, then?"

"Yeah, I'm ready."

Hizashi doesn't take him anywhere special; they go to the fast food place a block or two away from Shouta's complex. The food is below par, in Shouta's opinion, but he's picky, and this is the best Hizashi can do with the money he has on him.

"Are you gonna finish those nuggets, Shouta?" Hizashi asks, pointing at Shouta's half empty box of chicken nuggets. Shouta shakes his head, giving Hizashi the okay to finish them off.

"Why did you want to have a snowball fight? You knew I was gonna win," Shouta asks.

"Oh? A little cocky, aren't we?" Hizashi cocks an eyebrow.

"I'm being serious."

Hizashi chuckles. "You have a weird way of being serious. If you must know, I did know you were gonna win. It doesn't take a genius to see I was clearly outmatched. I think—" Hizashi pauses for a moment. "— I think I just wanted an excuse to take you to lunch."

"You could've just asked," Shouta says.

"I guess so, but I was kinda nervous. It's stupid, huh?"

"A little bit."

"I can always count on you to be honest with me," Hizashi laughs, and Shouta chuckles with him.

"I hope you had a good time, Shouta," Hizashi comments.

Shouta nods slightly and looks away. "I really did. Thanks, Hizashi."

"No problem! That's what friends do, y'know? Show each other a good time."

Shouta nods. "Can we do this again tomorrow? If it's snowing, I mean. And if you can afford to treat me to another victory lunch."

Hizashi smirks. "I think we can. Make sure your schedule is clear next Saturday though, cuz that's karaoke night."

"You're on."
