Work Text:

It’s a simple question.

Shouto is just explaining the laws around heroics. It was review. All Might is watching approvingly and everybody is listening stepped forward and he’s so tall. Shouto felt the shadow, the looming weight and heat of his dad and when All Might reached out to pat Shouto’s shoulder, he flinched. He swiped his hand, almost going for his ice.

It took a second later for him to realize that All Might was the same, kind face as always and that those sunken eyes bored into his with nothing but worry and fear over his reaction. Shouto acted like nothing happened. It wasn’t like it mattered.

But it did.

All Might has seen that flinch, he’s seen those scared eyes before in children taken out of abusive households that got too out of hand and villains that kidnapped and hurt.

He wouldn’t think the now #1 hero would be included with one of those villains.

It was what possessed All Might to stop Todoroki Enji dead in his tracks one day. It’s what lead him not to smile as he gripped Enji’s shirt, growling out, “Todoroki...What did you do to your son.”

“Whatever I do in my own home with my own-” Enji started but he didn’t see the hit coming.

All Might was withered and decayed looking but he wasn’t weak. He knew how to take somebody stronger than him down, he knew how to use height against them. So it was easy to land a hit on Enji.

“You dare hurt your own children!” All Might screamed. “They’re made to be loved and cared for not treated as a pawn!”

“I needed him!”

“For what! To beat me? You got there! You’re number one. But you never beat me in ranks for one reason.”

“Oh?” Enji sneered. He straightened, crossing his arms. All Might glared, his forehead so close they were basically touching.  “And what is that reason. Love?”

“Of course, you fool. You can’t be a hero without caring for civilians. You can’t be a hero if you aren’t compassionate to the victims of heartache and harm. You wanted to be #1 so bad you never stopped to think what it actually meant. I was the symbol everybody needed because I embodied the perfect hero to the public eye.” All Might spat blood at Enji’s shoes. “You could never be as perfect with your hatred and personal vendetta. Young heroes could never look up to you. I’m sorry to hear that you had four children because they most likely would never look up to you either.”
