The box was turned over to look at the front, characters that belonged in fairytale scattered all over. It showcased the diadem-esque game system, titled the “Player’s Crown”, as if to make it seem magical and irreplaceable. The holder of the box set it into their cart, smiling as they made their way to the small check-out counter in their local game store. They headed home, calling out when they did.
“I’m home!” They carried in the few bags of groceries and set them on the counter. Most were the regular items bought weekly; eggs, bread, seasonal fruit, but one was only bought every so often. A white cake.
A girl stepped into the kitchen, smiling softly behind tired eyes. “A cake…? Mom, my birthday isn’t until Friday…” She looked at the calendar before her eyes widened, “Which… is today.” She gave out a laugh, before scratching her neck. “Guess I got a bit lost without school to give me a schedule.”
Her mom continued to smile, “Well, since it’s your birthday do you want to get your present from the car?” She knew her daughters wishes, since she had seen the ads on her computer screen. It wasn’t uncommon to see her wrapped up in a blanket staring at the bright screen in a dark room.
The girl blinked for a moment, nodding as she headed to the entryway and slipped on her shoes. She stepped outside into the cold, looking at the snow still on the ground despite it being mid-February. She sighed and briskly walked to the car, taking the box from the front seat before she ran back inside, nearly slipping on the steps on her way in. She looked at her mom as she kicked her shoes off.
“No way!”
“Yes way! Happy birthday sweetie!”
The girl looked at the box, smiling brightly before she ran to her room, closing the door behind her. She opened the box, setting the system up and setting the diadem onto her desk. She spent a good 10 minutes setting the game up before she was finally able to start. The game needing set-up on her computer before anything.
She opened the game after it installed, mesmerized by the clean graphics. Soon it require set-up the first questions asking her to make an account with the game maker’s company. She entered her normal information before she was brought to a character creation screen.

Glancing at the options she was surprised. 5 race options: Magi, Elf, Faunus, Dracon, and Human. She picked Faunus, liking the idea of having an animal trait. However, as she went to change her other traits the game preselected them. She sat back, as even her name was preset. What was going on? Grabbing the box, she saw how each character had full control over each option but… for some reason she didn’t. Maybe it was a type of glitch? She pressed forward, planning to message the developers about the problem later. She wanted to finish the setup process already!!
Her screen switched to the character creation menu, soon she saw a blank character; porcelain skin, long black hair, blank eyes and… Rabbit ears? She looked into the left corner seeing the information she was supposed to fill out.

She was a queen? What kind of class was that? Was that the reason she had no control over the other factors? She hummed, sighing as she turned back to her character, deciding she could at least create them. She changed the black hair for white, kept the porcelain skin and gave the ears a brown-red color. It looked cute, at least to her. As she clicked the Finish button, she saw her character shift into clothing far too fancy for normal wear.
It was a light green and yellow Chinese hanfu, with magenta tassels and a long pink winter shawl, complete with white fur on the edges. It was beautiful… On her head was a floral crown made of evergreen’s, barely grazing the ears of her avatar.
She could only smile, before sitting up rapidly as she heard her mom yell.
“May!!! Dinner’s ready!”
She hopped out of her computer chair, the game still running in the background.
Her name was May Ringo, and she was in for a surprise in her own Epic Elegy.
