Work Text:
Katsuki quietly opened the door to his and Eijiro’s shared apartment, making sure not to make any noise. It was a surprise, after all. And that damn nerd said that sweet surprises from loved ones were always nice. Eijiro was a sap anyways, so a surprise like this was bound to make him cry manly tears or something.
Katsuki was just lucky he and Eijiro both made decent money as heroes, though. The gifts he ended up buying him made a dent in his bank account for sure. But whatever. It was for the love of his life or some sappy bullshit like that.
He crept into the apartment and followed the sound of Eijiro’s voice. He was humming some dumb pop song again. It was the same one he’d been humming all week. If anyone else had been singing it, Katsuki knew he’d be tired of it. But he could accept it coming from his boyfriend.
So Katsuki made his way into the kitchen, pulling the first present out of the bag (yes it was a scarf, but an industrial strength hero scarf that wouldn’t be ripped with his quirk) and moved to wrap it around Eijiro loosely.
And that, quite frankly, was when everything went to shit.
Having headphones in, Eijiro couldn’t even hear the rustling of the bag as Katsuki pulled the scarf out. So, when Katsuki moved to wrap the scarf around Eijiro, the one thing Katsuki probably should have predicted happened.
Eijiro was startled. It was fair that he was startled, too, because he had just gotten back from a tough mission overseas and was still on high alert from it. The mission had gone well, but it always took a day or two for Eijiro to let his guard down at home after long missions. And Katsuki knew that. So he should have anticipated this happening.
Eijiro was startled . So as the scarf wrapped around his neck, albeit loosely, Eijiro went rigid in more ways than one. His quirk activated, hardening every part of his body, even the soft, non-spiked hairs on his head, just as Katsuki was moving in to plant a kiss on his crown. Not being able to move back in time, Katsuki faced the brunt of his poorly timed kiss head on. Eijiro’s hair hardened and practically stabbed Katsuki’s left eye.
It should have been anticipated. But Katsuki was still mad about it.
“Eijiro, what the fuck!?”
Eijiro turned around fast and deactivated his quirk in an instant. He gasped and moved to hold Katsuki’s face in his hands. “ Ohmygod. Oh my god, Katsuki – I’m so sorry! Are you okay?”
“Am I okay?! You just fucking punched me in the fucking face with your damn shitty hair, and you’re asking if I’m okay?!”
Eijiro frowned and crossed his arms. “That’s not fair, babe. You know I’m still jumpy from work.”
“Doesn’t mean you had to stab my eye.”
Sighing and moving to the freezer to pull out an ice pack, Eijiro rolled his eyes at his boyfriend. “First I punched you, now I stabbed you. Which one is it, Katsuki?”
Katsuki sat on the counter across from Eijiro and pouted as he held the ice pack to his face. “You punched me.”
“I didn’t mean to, though.”
Frowning and hopping off the counter, Katsuki grumbled to his boyfriend angrily. “You didn’t even mention the scarf.”
Eijiro pulled at the bright red scarf around his neck and smiled. “I love it! It’s my favorite color! I’m surprised I didn’t rip it just then.”
As Katsuki walked into the living room, he scoffed and plopped down on the couch. “Of course you didn’t rip it. It’s industrial strength. I’m pretty sure it’s the same material your costume is made from.”
“Really!?” Eijiro followed Katsuki into the living room after turning the stove off. He plopped down on the couch next to his boyfriend and smiled wide as he buried his face in the scarf. “That’s so cool! Thank you, babe. That means a lot.” He leaned in and tried to kiss Katsuki on the cheek, but Katsuki turned away and pouted.
“Oh, come on, Katsuki.”
“No. You punched me.”
He laughed and leaned back against the couch. “I didn’t think the amazing Katsuki Katsuki would ever get caught in a fight that would give him a black eye. I mean if you count the interaction between you and my hair as a fight.”
At that remark, Katsuki groaned and turned away from Eijiro on the couch, throwing his free hand in the air in exasperation. “Are you kidding me!?”
“Okay okay. I’m sorry babe.”
“The one time-“
He sighed and reached out to the other boy. “Katsuki, c’mon I said I was sorry-“
“No! The ONE time I decide to do something nice-“
“Katsuki-“
“Surprise my boyfriend on his birthday-“
“Calm down-“
“Everyone said it was a good idea! This is why I never listen to those damn idiots!”
“Babe-“
He turned his back to Eijiro and pouted as he held the ice pack against his eye. “This is the last fucking time I do something nice.”
Eijiro sighed again and scooted closer to Katsuki on the couch, draping his arms over his boyfriend’s shoulders and pulling him close to kiss him on the cheek. Katsuki tilted his face away from Eijiro’s and scoffed. “Don’t kiss me, you idiot. I’m still pissed off.”
“Babe, are you seriously mad at me still? I apologized a hundred times – A-and you know it wasn’t on purpose!” The redheaded boy threw his arms in the air in exasperation as he spoke.
“Of course I’m still pissed off!” He pulled the ice pack from his eye, revealing a rapidly darkening bruise surrounding the area in question. “My boyfriend fucking punched me in the face!”
“I didn’t punch you!”
Katsuki rolled his eyes and groaned. “Fine. My boyfriend’s shitty damn hair punched me in the fucking face. Better?”
Eijiro wrapped his arms around the blond again and smiled. “Better. If I’m not allowed to kiss you, though, can I still hug you?”
“Fine.”
Squeezing tighter, Eijiro chuckled and leaned back onto the couch, causing Katsuki to fall back with him. “ I’m soooorrrryyyy. Please forgive me, my sunshine. My love. My Kitkat. My Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight . My Katsuki.”
Katsuki groaned again as Eijiro rambled on. “Shut up already, will you? I get it. You’re sorry. You don’t have to grovel like an idiot. You’re my boyfriend, not some lowly subordinate.” The annoyance was still very present in Katsuki’s voice, but Eijiro knew there was a smile on the angry boy’s face.
One Hour Earlier
The five of them made their way through the small aisle of the department store where Katsuki was standing. With all six people, including Katsuki crowding the aisle, there was no room for any other shoppers to make their way through. He was staring intently at the rack of scarves in front of him. One of them was bound to be perfect, to be sturdy enough. But that’s why he called them all here anyways. To get a second opinion, and third, fourth and fifth.
He did not ask for the sixth. “What the hell is icy hot doing here, Izuku? I thought he didn’t get off patrol for another two hours.”
“Oh, well I told him to meet me here after he got off since we had errands to run anyways. And when I told him why . . . Well . . .” Izuku trailed off and rubbed the back of his neck while blushing.
Shoto raised his hand and waved. “He told me you were looking for a birthday present for Kirishima and needed help. I’m always willing to help a friend.”
Katsuki rolled his eyes and groaned. It’s not that he didn’t consider Shoto one of his good friends, especially after all these years, but hearing it out loud from almost anyone was still annoying. “Whatever. Just don’t suggest any stupid ideas.”
“Well you called us because you were afraid of making a stupid decision.” Mina rolled her eyes and pushed past Katsuki to continue looking on the scarf rack.
Katsuki scoffed and glared at Mina. “I didn’t even tell you what any of my ideas where, Racoon Eyes.”
“Bakugo. We aren’t fifteen. How many times do I have to tell you to drop the Racoon Eyes thing?”
“How many times do I have to tell you not to tell me what to do?”
Denki and Hanta put an arm around both Katsuki and Mina. Hanta let out a strained laugh and looked between the two. “Hey guys. We’re all best friends here.”
Denki laughed and shook Katsuki’s shoulder, causing Katsuki to glare at him. “We’re here because you asked us to help pick out a gift or two for Kirishima, right? Let’s focus on making your man happy on his birthday. How ‘bout that?”
Katsuki rolled his eyes and shrugged Denki’s arm off his shoulder, going back to look at the scarves.
Izuku and Shoto moved closer to the scarf rack to help Katsuki look. Shoto pulled a bright red scarf off the rack and looked at it. “Well what actually were your ideas for his birthday gift? I can see you were looking at scarves, and red is his favorite color, right? Does he like scarves a lot?”
Katsuki sighed and put the scarf that he was holding back as Shoto spoke. “Yes. But he can’t wear many scarves because his stupid quirk rips them every time.” He leaned back, quickly eyeing the rest of the rack. “None of these will be sturdy enough. I’ll have to look and see if they have any hero grade ones.”
Hanta cleared his throat. “I mean, are we just looking for a couple different accessories that he likes? I feel like you don’t need all of us here to help with something like that.”
Katsuki snapped around to the other three and pointed at them. “You three are here because you’re also his closest friends besides Tetsutetsu, but that idiot can’t keep a secret to save his life, and he’s still on patrol for a couple more hours.”
He pointed his thumb back at Shoto and Izuku. “And I didn’t even ask Todoroki to come, but Izuku’s the best person at getting gifts that I know of. And he’s the only one with real experience in a relationship like this.”
Mina put her hand on her chest and gasped. “Just because I don’t date men doesn’t mean I don’t date anyone!”
“Yeah, and why do you always seem to forget that Hitoshi and I have been together for almost as long as you and Kirishima have?” Denki frowned and sighed.
Hanta paused for a moment, looking at the other two and sighed. “Yeah . . . I haven’t had a serious relationship in a while so I have nothing to say to that.”
“I really didn’t need any help with the small gifts or anything. I needed you idiots for the second part. I need to know if this is a dumb idea or not.”
Back to the scene of the crime
Eijiro beamed at his boyfriend, still hugging him close. “So you forgive me!?”
“Of course I do. What kind of dumbass question is that?”
Laughing and kissing Katsuki all over, Eijiro laughed and continued to ramble on. “Thank you for forgiving me! I’m still sorry though. I didn’t mean to punch you with my hair. I promise it won’t happen again.”
“Ei . . . Babe it’s fine-“
“And I love the scarf. Thank you for being an amazing boyfriend and getting me an amazing birthday present.”
“Eijiro. I get it. You can calm down now.”
Eijiro opened his mouth to reply, but Katsuki stopped him, moving his hand to cover Eijiro’s mouth. “Stop. I haven’t even given you your other birthday present yet.”
“You got me another present? Babe, you didn’t have to do that.”
Katsuki squirmed out of Eijiro’s grasp and stood up from the couch, setting the ice pack on the coffee table. “Just shut up and wait here.”
Eijiro sat up and crossed his legs on the couch, waiting patiently for Katsuki to return from the kitchen, where he left the gift bag. He brought the bag into the living room and dug around in it before pulling out a set of fluffy red earmuffs. He tossed them at Eijiro and sighed. “Here. Since your ears are always cold in the winter because you cant wear hats because of your stupid shitty hair.”
“You love my hair, and you know it.”
“I never said I didn’t. Now shut up, this present is important.”
“Katsuki. This is too much! It’s just my birthday-“
Katsuki glared at his boyfriend until Eijiro got the picture. “Okay, I’ll shut up now.”
After digging around in the bag for a second more, Katsuki stopped – apparently after finding what he was looking for – and looked over at Eijiro. He stared at his boyfriend and blushed a bit, causing Eijiro to laugh and smile wide at him.
“What?”
Katsuki lowered the bag, but kept his hand inside of it. His blush was growing, much to Eijiro’s amusement. He didn’t respond until a moment later, after clearing his throat and looking at the ground. “Okay, so. I’ve been thinking about giving this to you for a while now, and Izuku said it’d be a good idea. So . . .”
Eijiro knew that while Katsuki and Izuku were best friends, Katsuki usually only used Izuku’s given name when he was serious or if Izuku was around. So he knew this next gift meant a lot to Katsuki.
Katsuki took a few steps closer to the couch where Eijiro was seated. Once he pulled his hand out of the bag, Eijiro noticed he was holding a small black box. Katsuki discarded the bag and blushed bright red before getting down on one knee in front of Eijiro.
“Okay . . .” He cleared his throat again before continuing. “We’ve been dating for a while now, and I know that I love you more than I’ve ever loved anyone else. You’re strong and manly and hot and badass . . . And I love everything about you, okay? Even though I think it’s bullshit, I feel like you’re my soulmate or something. So . . . Eijiro Kirishima, will you marry me?”
He opened the box to reveal a simple but beautiful ring, engraved to look like Eijiro’s quirk. It was obvious that Katsuki had this ring ordered for a long time, seeing the detail that was put into it. It was beautiful.
Eijiro sat there, mouth agape, glancing back and forth between the ring and Katsuki. His face turned almost as crimson as his hair, and tears began to well in his eyes. “Katsuki, I . . . That was so sweet and kinda poetic of you.”
“I can be poetic when I want to!” Katsuki blushed and glanced to the side again before mumbling to Eijiro. “You didn’t give me an answer…”
“Wha- Oh!” Eijiro blushed again and leaned in to pull Katsuki into a long and slow kiss. “Of course! I’d want nothing more in life than to marry you, Katsuki.” He kissed him again and pulled away to let Katsuki slide the ring onto his finger. “Yes. I love you.”
Eijiro pulled Katsuki up off the ground and pulled him into another kiss. When they broke apart, Katsuki laughed – a rare and beautiful sight – and hugged Eijiro close to him. “I love you, Ei. I love you so much. Happy birthday.”
One Year (and a few months) Later
Casual conversation and laughter filled the room. There wasn’t a sour expression in sight as people danced around on the large ballroom floor, mingled by the open bar, and sipped on drinks or snacked on hors d’oeuvres at the tables organized throughout the room.
It was a beautiful night. Loud and boisterous, but nothing over the top. Everyone they knew – and at least vaguely appreciated – was there. From their close friends and family to old teachers and classmates from their time at Yuuei. Everything was perfect. Everything was beautiful.
As the dancing started to die down, and the guests made their way back to their designated tables, he stood up. He looked over the crowd with a wide smile and picked up his glass of champagne – which, honest to gods, he never thought he would enjoy until now – and began to lightly tap his fork against it. The ringing of the glass filled the room and everyone went silent. He laughed and turned to his boyfriend, no fiancé , no husband, and chuckled. “I’ve always wanted to do that.”
“You’re such a nerd.”
“Yeah but I’m your nerd. Forever.”
Katsuki rolled his eyes and smiled, taking a sip of his champagne as Eijiro continued standing. “Just get on with it.”
“Oh, yeah.” Eijiro turned back to the crowd of guests and smiled as wide as he always did. Taking in the scene of all of the people he genuinely cared about gathered in one room to celebrate the greatest moment of his life, Eijiro felt himself get choked up. He maintained his composure as he spoke, though. “Uh, hi! I’m not really sure what to say other than thank you. It really means a lot that all of you came out to celebrate this with us. This is absolutely the greatest day of my life, and I hope it’s his, too-“ He gestured to Katsuki who rolled his eyes and nodded next to him. “So I really can’t express how much it means to me to have all of my favorite people in one room to share this moment with us. I could go around the room thanking each and every one of you for something super specific, but that’d take forever. So I think I’ll just say thank you overall again.”
He took a breath and scanned the room, noticing his friends and family and teachers watching him intently. He noticed some couples in the crowd, leaning on each other and smiling, love drunk on the events of the night. Some of them already had their weddings, so they looked to be reminiscing – his old teachers Aizawa and Present Mic were leaning on each other and Present Mic was smiling wide. Shinsou and Kaminari were sitting at the table as well, with Shinsou in the middle of holding his arm out so his adopted little sister Eri could doodle on his arm, as she always did. All Might had his arm around Sir Nighteye, who was focusing intently but still seemed fairly content to lie against All Might’s chest. Tamaki was blushing as Mirio held his hand and kissed his ring (their wedding was particularly fun two years ago).
Others were either engaged or just getting serious in their relationships – Tenya and Ochaco smiled up at Eijiro from where they were sitting. Ochaco was slightly leaning against Tenya as she played with the engagement ring on her finger. Momo and Kyouka were sitting next to each other and smiling, wearing matching rings and coordinating outfits. Izuku and Shoto had their arms around each other as they watched intently – Izuku was smiling wide, and Shoto had a small smirk on his face, not of mischief but of contentment. And then he stopped scanning the room, because he found one of the two best men.
“I think now I can hand the mic over to Katsuki’s best man.” He held out the mic and smiled at Izuku before speaking again. “Here ya go, Midoriya. The floor is yours.”
Izuku kissed Shoto on the cheek and stood up, walking over to take the microphone from Eijiro. Once he had the microphone, Izuku cleared his throat and scanned the room. The usual stutter and nerves he used to have in high school were practically non-existent. With his immense fame as a hero, he was able to command an audience much easier now.
“I wanted to start by saying that I’m honestly surprised it took this long for these two to actually get married. I mean I knew that Kacchan had a crush on Kirishima for a long time before they actually made things serious, so it really makes me happy to see them thriving in their relationship right now. I mean, hearing that the night he proposed, Kacchan got a black eye from Kirishima’s hair was funny enough. I remember a time when Kacchan would have obliterated anyone who did that to him, accident or not.”
The crowed erupted in soft cheers and laughter. Katsuki rolled his eyes and groaned. “I told you not to bring it up, Deku!”
He threw his free hand up in resignation. “I know I know. It just had to be mentioned. I mean, how often do you hear about someone accidentally getting a black eye from their boyfriend?” He laughed along with the rest of the guests and took a moment to continue. “I really am beyond ecstatic that this wedding happened. You two have been the unexpected but extremely wonderful surprise of our class. And while I say it’s a surprise, the surprise really lies in Kacchan being open enough about his feelings to actually date someone. I can’t begin to explain how encouraging your relationship is to all of us. So all I really have to say is thank you. Thank you for sharing this amazing moment with us. We all can’t wait to see you two continue to love and grow together. Congratulations.”
Izuku handed the microphone back to Eijiro as the guests all cheered and shouted words of encouragement from their seats. After the cheers had died down enough, Katsuki took the mic from Eijiro’s hand and leaned forward on the table in front of him. “Alright. Now that that sappy bullshit is over-“
Eijiro elbowed him, and he sighed and actually smiled over at Izuku. “Thank you though. I asked you to be my best man for a reason. You’re still a damn nerd, but you’re a damn good friend too.”
He stood up and turned back to the rest of the crowd, scanning it for the next person to give a speech. “As I was saying . . . Now that the sappy bullshit is over, as much as I appreciated it, I need Eijiro’s best man to get the hell up here.” He continued to scan the crowd but couldn’t find the familiar mess of silver hair poking out anywhere. “Tetsutetsu, where the fuck are you?”
Cheering erupted as Tetsutetsu stood up and made his way to the front of the room to grab the microphone. Before he grabbed the mic, he and Eijiro performed an elaborate handshake that looked like more trouble than it was worth – that caused everyone to erupt in cheers and laughter again. Once he grabbed the mic, Tetsutetsu cleared his throat dramatically and put his hand on his chest before speaking. “The moment I met Eijiro, I couldn’t stand him. He was a damn copycat, and that pissed me off. But once we battled in our first year sports festival, I knew he was a man to be trusted. The manliest man I know, Eijiro Kirishima. I couldn’t ask for a better bro for life, and I’m so excited and happy that he has his love for life with Katsuki. These two are two of the best, manliest people I know, and words can’t describe how happy I am for them. So to wrap up my speech, I have a request for my best friend.”
He turned around to Eijiro, who had an eyebrow raised in confusion, and reached out a hand. “I challenge you to an arm-wrestling match. For old time’s sake.”
Without a moment’s hesitation, Eijiro stood up from his seat and nodded. He took his suit jacket off and started unbuttoning his dress shirt when Katsuki questioned him. “What the hell are you stripping for, weirdo?”
Shrugging off his white dress shirt and fixing the white tank top he had on underneath it, Eijiro laughed and activated his quirk. “Didn’t wanna rip it, babe.”
The arm-wrestling match went on for a painfully long time, long enough for Katsuki to grab the mic and tell everyone to go back to whatever they were doing because it’d be a while. Eventually Eijiro got the upper hand, like last time, and Tetsutetsu admitted defeat. The two best friends cried “manly” tears and hugged it out as the guests started cheering (mainly because they were just happy it was over).
The rest of the night fell into a peaceful hum of friendly chatter and soft music. It was a wedding to remember, for sure. And everyone who talked to Katsuki brought up his infamous black eye at some point in the conversation, much to his chagrin. But even he had to admit that it was funny, looking back on it of course.
When the reception finally ended, the newlyweds retired to their honeymoon suite in the hotel they booked. Still riding an adrenaline high, they stayed up all night – a mess of tangled limbs and whispered sentiments. Everything about the night had been perfect. The casual banter, the fond memories, the smiling faces, the love love love the two shared for each other. All of it was beyond perfect.
As the two finally began to drift to sleep, Katsuki laid with his head on Eijiro’s chest, hair as messy as it was in high school, even though it’d been slightly tamed for the wedding. Eijiro held his new husband close and kissed his crown.
Sighing contently as he held Katsuki close, Eijiro whispered. “Hey . . . Remember when my hair punched you in the face and gave you a black eye. . . And then you proposed to me right after? That was fun.”
Katsuki hummed against Eijiro’s chest, eyes still closed. “Hey, remember when you shut up about giving me a black eye because you love me and it’s our wedding night? That was even more fun.”
“Oh, c’mon babe. It was just a joke.”
“Hmmm. I know. But it’s our wedding night. And I’m tired. So shut up and go to bed.”
Eijiro smiled and went silent for a moment before laughing again.
Katsuki opened his eyes and glared up at Eijiro. “What?”
“It’s our wedding night . We’re married now.”
Closing his eyes again and snuggling closer to Eijiro, Katsuki smiled. “Well yeah. You did say yes when I proposed to you. And we just had a wedding. So I’d think that made us married or something.”
“Katsuki, you’re my husband.”
“And you’re mine.”
Eijiro let out a giddy laugh, and Katsuki opened his eyes again. He moved up to meet Eijiro’s eye level and kissed him long and slow.
“What was that for?”
Katsuki ran his hands through Eijiro’s soft red hair and buried his face in his neck to get comfortable again. “I wanted to kiss my husband. Is there a problem?”
Blushing hard and pulling Katsuki closer, Eijiro laughed and kissed his head again. “I love you, my beautiful husband Katsuki .”
“Stop being a damn sap and go to sleep, Ei.”
He laughed again and nodded, finally letting himself slowly fall asleep. “Okay okay. Goodnight.”
After a moment of silence, Eijiro’s breath started to even out a long with Katsuki’s. Smiling against Eijiro’s neck, Katsuki whispered out to his husband just before falling asleep. “ I love you too, my beautiful husband Eijiro.”
