Work Text:

The job is boring and bland but it’s something Tsuyu’s used to by now. She got a job handing flyers out around town for the restaurant she works for. It’s a newer cafe so they want to get as many people talking about it as possible. Handing out the flyers takes up two hours of her usual shift so she doesn’t mind it. She’ll be told a different spot to go every shift so she gets to explore the city while being paid.

It’s how she meets a cute girl that started coming into the cafe at least once a week too. They bumped into each other while the other was rushing out of a store. Tsuyu vaguely recognised her as somebody in her university. They would pass by each other but they never had any classes or reason to talk. They just crossed paths a lot.

It’s almost akin to fate that they met and Tsuyu had given her a flyer, flustered and not knowing for once what else to do or say. She had smiled and ended up walking off after they got each other’s names.

The girl’s name is Ochako.

Tsuyu is a cashier when she gets back to the store and two days later, Ochako walks in with a tall man. Both are talking adamantly with the man swinging his arms as he talks and Ochako bouncing slightly as she adds on.

They’re loud compared to the quiet cafe and some people looked at them a little rudely. Tsuyu looks but not out of annoyance, out of a quiet infatuation. The way she talks and moves is mesmerizing and she loves the smile Ochako has and the small almost hopping she does as she talks excitedly. She can’t help but want to be on the receiving end of that excitability.

Ochako is a flurry of excitable chatter when she gets to the register and realizes who is working. The man seemed to have expected this and isn’t shocked, just calmly ordering a simple coffee before Ochako bursts back into her talking.

“Tsuyu, I thought you just handed out flyers!” Ochako exclaims. “I forgot to ask if you had a phone number when we met because I wanted to make up bumping into you!”

“You don’t have to make it up to me, Ochako.” Tsuyu states. “It was an accident.”

“I know but I still feel bad,” Ochako almost pouts at the thought. It’s replaced a second later by a grin as she says, “Oh yeah, I have to order something. You’re at work; I can’t hold up the line!”

They move down the counter while the other cashier takes over so Tsuyu can make the drinks. She goes into autopilot to make them, writing the name on the plastic cups before mixing everything and handing them off with a smile.

“I hope I get to see you outside of work, Tsuyu! We should get-well not coffee since you work here but we should go out for lunch sometime!” Ochako says. It seems to take everything she had to stay standing, leaning heavily on the counter with her cheeks entirely tomato red.

Tsuyu’s smile is wider as she says, “I’d love that. Text me and we’ll set it up.”

Ochako looks confused for a split second before looking at her cup and seeing her name and also a number with a little smiley face next to it.
