Work Text:
As much as everyone liked to joke about it, Iida Tenya was not a robot. He may be a stickler for the rules and strive for perfection, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t human. He makes mistakes too, and when Iida got up from the common room, put his laptop on the table, and walked into the kitchen only to hear a loud squeal from the common room, he realized his mistake.
“Iida! Are you planning a confession?” Hagakure asked the moment Iida stepped back into the room.
He sighed as he was greeted with the sight of Hagakure, Jirou, Ashido, Kaminari, Bakugou, Kirishima, and Todoroki crowding around his laptop that he forgot to close. Moments before, he was reading an article titled ‘Top 10 Ways to Confess for Valentine’s Day’ before heading towards the kitchen to grab a glass of water.
“Hagakure-san, it is quite rude to go snooping. Also, please keep your voice down.” Iida replied.
“I didn’t hear a no.” Ashido said, giggling. “So Class President, who has managed to capture your heart?”
“That is none of your business. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be in my room.” Iida said as he grabbed his laptop and turned to walk towards the elevator.
“Wait! Iida! Maybe we can help!” Kaminari shouted.
Iida slowly turned around and raised an eyebrow at the blonde. “Help?”
“Come on man! You’ve helped us so much lately that this is the least we could do.” Kirishima grinned.
“I didn’t agree to do shit.” Bakugou yelled out among the cheerful group.
“Okay so everyone’s in.” Jirou said, completely oblivious to Bakugou’s shouts.
“I just need advice, that is all.” Iida said, his normally present shouts now quieted. He quickly walked back into the common room and took a seat with everyone else.
“Well lucky for you, you got the greatest class couple right here.” Kirishima said as he swung an around around Bakugou. It was like magic the way Bakugou’s mood improved, even if it was not by a lot.
“Glasses wants to confess, genius. Did you forget how that turned out for us?” Bakugou asked, turning to his boyfriend with a confused expression.
“I thought everything went well,” said Kaminari. “You just asked him out, right?”
Kirishima’s face reddened to match his hair as he sunk into the couch. Bakugou let out a short but loud laugh as he turned to Kaminari.
“It took Ei three dates to realize I wasn’t taking him to ‘bro outings’. You really shouldn’t take any of his advice.”
“Well is the person in question like Kirishima?” Todoroki asked.
Iida thought about their similarities. The upbeat attitude, bright smile, being best friends with someone who’s pining.
“She is.” he simply replied.
“So it’s a she!” Hagakure shouted. “Is it Yaoyorozu?”
“Don’t.” Jirou quietly whispered.
“No, it is not Yaoyorozu-san. No need to worry Jirou-san.” Iida answered, shooting a small smile towards a red faced Jirou.
“Well what’s your plan Jirou? Maybe it’ll inspire Iida.” Kaminari asked.
“I’m in the middle of writing a song for her. Are you musically inclined at all Iida?” Jirou asked.
Iida’s thoughts went to his brother, Tensei. While Iida was the more studious one, excelling with numbers, Tensei was quite musically talented, especially on drums. Back when he was in U.A. and Iida was only a toddler, Tensei would have Midnight-sensei, Mic-sensei, and even Aizawa-sensei over to mess around with the instruments in the garage.
“Sadly, music is not a specialty of mine.” Iida responded.
Iida was in no way ready to embarass himself in front of her. He lacks far too much confidence for that. She may not mind though. Whenever she would have study breaks in his room, she was perfectly content with bursting into song off key, looking absolutely radiant and dazzling in her simple pyjamas.
“Well I’m assuming you would want to keep things subdued and nothing too extra,” Ashido brought up. “I bet Todoroki has an answer for you.”
“Sadly I’m of no help. Izuku and I didn’t even confess to each other.” Todoroki responded nonchalantly.
“No fucking way Deku managed to bottle up his feelings for that long.” Bakugou said in disbelief.
“It’s true,” Todoroki began, a pained look reflected on his face. “Izuku and I went to his house to visit his mom and All Might just so happened to be there. He saw us and said ‘young Midoriya, I didn’t know you and young Todoroki were dating.’ and I panicked and said that we were. We talked afterwards and cleared everything up. However, I don’t think Iida’s hidden feelings are going to be exposed via a retired pro hero in the middle of making lunch.”
Iida shuddered at the thought of Tensei wheeling into the living room and shouting “Is this your girlfriend Tenya?” while having a shit eating grin on his face.
“This is going nowhere.” Iida sighed “Thank you everyone for your assistance but it is almost curfew and we should get going.”
“Good luck bro.” Kaminari says as he joins the rest in heading upstairs.
“For such a smart kid, you seem to miss the most obvious answer, Tenya.”
Iida jumped as he turned around and saw Aizawa laying down behind the couch in his signature yellow sleeping bag.
“Aizawa-sensei! I don’t-.”
“Cut the formalities out. It’s just us here.”
Iida closed his mouth before looking down at his teacher.
“What do you mean ‘the most obvious answer’?” Iida asked.
“I mean the fact that you’ve considered doing a Bakugou or Jirou or Todoroki style confession when you should make a Tenya style one.” Aizawa stated.
“But what if-.”
“Uraraka would be a fool not to accept.”
“How do you know?” Iida asked in shock.
“I’m a very perceptive hero. Also, Tensei told me.”
Iida chuckled to himself before getting up and smiling at Aizawa.
“Thank you, Shouta-san.”
“Uncle Shouta has your back kid.” he declared before rolling face down on the floor.
Iida chuckled to himself as he walked up the stairs and rehearsed the scolding he was going to give his brother.
The next morning greeted Iida with the class staring at Iida who was staring at an envelope and heart shaped box of chocolates on his desk.
“Ooooo I see Class Prez has sped his way into someone’s heart.” Sero calls out.
Iida was so surprised he almost didn’t hear Todoroki ask Midoriya, “wouldn’t that hurt?”
“Jeez Iida, it’s a shame you gotta turn the poor soul down.” Jirou said grievously.
“Wait, what?” a voice asked.
Iida was perfectly content with just dying when he saw the concerned look on Uraraka’s face.
“Our lil speedster over here has got a certain someone in mind already.” Kaminari declared as he swung an arm over Iida.
Iida’s heart plummeted as a flash of something like anguish passed over Uraraka’s face. She probably felt bad for the mysterious admirer. Who wouldn’t right now?
“I should at least read the letter.” Iida decided, beginning to open up the envelope. “It’s only fair to them and I should know who it is so I can speak to them.”
“NO!” Uraraka cried out suddenly.
“Why ‘no’ Uraraka?” Midoriya asked from next to her.
Uraraka froze for a moment, looking from the letter, to Iida, to Midoriya.
“I-it’s a personal matter. You shouldn’t just open it in class I-Iida-kun.”
Iida sent a warm smile in her direction. She always seemed to know exactly what others are thinking.
“You’re right. I’ll open it when I’m back in my dorm room.”
“You shouldn’t do that either!” Uraraka rushed out.
Iida gave her a confused look as he put the envelope in his bag.
The girl’s already rosy cheeks turned a deeper shade. “Well, I mean, imagine how embarrassed they’ll feel when they find out that you read it knowing you were going to reject them. Seems almost… cruel.”
Iida looked over at Uraraka. Her eyes were wide and pleading as he stared into them, more and more confused. Why was she concerned for this stranger?
His response to her was interrupted by a sharp, “get to your seats.” from Aizawa.
Iida sat down and could practically feel Uraraka’s eyes drilling into the back of his head.
He would get to the bottom of the erratic behaviour.
Lucky, the rest of the day went by without any other incident. Soon enough, it was 8pm and Iida was dressed in a simple light blue button up and jeans as he made his way over to Uraraka’s door.
“Uraraka-san! Can you come out? I have something to show you.”
He was met with silence.
“Uraraka? Are you in there?”
He pressed his ear against the door and heard quiet sniffles from the other side. Panic swelled up in him as he shouted, “I’m coming in Uraraka!”
He opened the and poked his head in. He suddenly felt paralyzed as he looked at Uraraka, body quivering, her face red and eyes puffy as she tried to hide her face from Iida.
“Uraraka! What happened? What can I do for you?” Iida said as he hurried and kneeled in front of her bed where she sat.
“Oh Iida, you don’t need to worry about me.” she replied, her voice a bit raspy.
“That’s absurd. I’d do anything for you. You’re my friend Uraraka.”
She looked up at him with a wistful look. “Friend, huh?”
She got up from her bed and moved past him to face her desk, her back to Iida.
“You wanna know why I was crying? Why I was so distressed this morning?” she asked.
“Y-yes, of course.” Iida replied, heart beating faster than his quirk.
She sighed heavily. “I’m only saying this to clear the air and to get over it. You made yourself clear this morning.”
“Uraraka, you’re worrying me.” Iida said.
“No need to worry, Iida-kun. I’m just telling you that the gift from this morning was from me. That’s why I’m a mess right now. But don’t you start worrying, okay? I’m already feeling better.”
Iida stared at her, frozen in shock. So many thoughts were running through his head and so many words wanted to spill from his mouth but nothing seemed to work. Finally, his brain listened again and let him do one simple thing,
“Come with me.” he said, extending a hand towards her.
Uraraka looked up at him in surprise as she slowly stepped forward and took his hand.
The moment her hand touched his, he pulled her close and picked her up bridal style before using his quirk to get to rooftop.
Up there, a blanket and basket housed Iida’s idea of a romantic candlelit picnic. Iida set Uraraka down as she looked at the set up in awe.
“W-what’s all this?” she asked, turning back towards Iida.
“Last night, some of the class found out that I wanted to confess to a girl tonight. They tried to give me some advice but none of it was successful. That was until someone important to me told me that instead of looking at other people's way, I should do things my own way, Iida style.” Iida looked into Uraraka’s eyes. “You once told me you loved the night sky and I told you I was surprised but never told you why. The truth is, you’ve always been like the sun to me. Radiant, strong, keeping me going.” Iida grabbed Uraraka’s hand with one hand as he brushed a strand of hair away from her face with the other. “So, Uraraka Ochako, I must asked you, do you accept my confession?”
Uraraka quickly grabbed Iida’s collar and pulled him in for a quick kiss.
“If I’m your sun, that mean you’re my moon. Luminous and brilliant.”
