Slumbering Summer

Summary:

When Bakugou realises that he doesn't know what Todoroki looks like when he sleeps, he goes through a series of rocky mini quests to discover what he's been missing out on. TodoBaku.

Work Text:

Bakugou always knew he as an early riser. He went to bed early and woke up early. It was good for his skin – his mother tells him so, not that she needs it. It also gave him ample time to get things done before the day really started – where he’d be bombarded by all the people fussing around him. Usually he was able to get some exercise and a relaxing shower in before breakfast. It was a good schedule, good habits, and he was happy with it until he started living with Todoroki Shouto, his long-term lover of sorts.

Of sorts because Uraraka calls them the married dicks.

Technically, their dicks aren’t married to each other.

Of sorts because Iida calls them the obsessive psychos.

But everyone is entitled to have the small things they’re obsessed with.

Of sorts because Kirishima calls them the manly lovers.

Yeah, they’re lovers of sorts, but not of manly things.

Of sorts because Sero calls them the idiots in love.

They’re not idiots – that’s a fact.

They moved in together after their first year as professional heroes on a squawking hot summer day. Pooling their earnings together, they bought themselves a quaint house away from the city. It was not totally traditional because Bakugou wanted a modern kitchen, but Todoroki wanted at least one tatami room. And so, it was a mix and filled with compromises that they could both accept and come to love regardless of whether they initially wanted it or not. They both did want a bathtub spacious enough for to fully grown adults to sit in and not feel too cramped. It was difficult given the small houses typical of their country, but it wasn’t impossible.

Together, they chose their furniture and bickered over the smallest things like how one didn’t like the curve of that chair or the leg of that table. But they always made up quickly and found something they both approved of. Bakugou remembers feeling incredibly embarrassed when the only bed Todoroki would look at were the king-sized beds. We sleep together he insisted. The futons were set up as spares for nights they felt like rolling around in a futon over their bed. Their bed. Their bed that fit very snugly in their bedroom and welcomed its owners comfortably every night. Bakugou supposes that that is what lovers – somewhat – do anyway. Can do, Bakugou corrects in his head.

Bakugou pulls open a window and lets the sound of singing crickets wade into the house and enjoys the cool summer night breeze. Todoroki nudges him and they share a smile together.

It’s when Bakugou is at a dinner gathering with the outrageously boisterous Bakugou Gundan and a dull throbbing headache that he becomes curious.

“Tell us, Hime”, Ashido coons as she pours herself some more calpis, “what’s Prince Todoroki-sama’s sleeping face like?”

Bakugou frowns as he thinks and sips on his orange juice.

“Does he drool?” Kaminari supplies.

Bakugou frowns even more. He isn’t sure. In fact, he doesn’t know what Todoroki’s sleeping face looks like at all, because he most likely has never even seen it before in his fucking life. He shrugs and brushes it off, “dunno”.

“Eh?” Bakugou’s friends all respond with shocked faces.

“You don’t want to know or you don’t know?” Sero says pointedly. There’s a difference.

Bakugou shrugs again, “never seen his sleeping face before”, he picks up a piece of kimchi and pops it in his mouth and savours the taste.

After that, Bakugou becomes interested in what Todoroki’s sleeping face is like. He does wonder if Todoroki drools, or if he bites his lips or if his nose twitches. And frankly he just wants to know why his friends find this sleeping face business so interesting. He wonders if he’d be able to see something he likes in Todoroki’s sleeping face.

And so, Bakugou’s mission to discover Todoroki Shouto’s sleeping face starts.

Bakugou starts with trying to sleep late – after Todoroki Shouto to be exact.

However, it’s difficult as the circadian rhythm kicks in and demands Bakugou to sleep at half past nine every night. It was ridiculous, but he really does succumb to the calling of nature. So Bakugou tries to keep himself up by keeping himself occupied.

“You’re watching a movie?” Todoroki is surprised as he takes a seat next to Bakugou, a bowl of grapes in his hands as he munches on them joyfully.

Bakugou makes a noise of agreement, he can already feel sleep trying to seep into his veins and arteries. On second thoughts, perhaps Lord of the Rings isn’t the best movie to watch to try and stay awake. Before Bakugou can even consider any more, he has automatically made himself comfortable on Todoroki’s shoulder. He wakes up the next morning in bed. Out of some form of slight embarrassment, he doesn’t bring up what happened the night before.

But Bakugou does try again, this time, he watches an action movie. And, well, needless to say, he stays up for longer… but also ends up slumbering before the movie ends.

Huffing, Bakugou crosses his arms and eyes Todoroki warily the next day. Todoroki tilts his head and gives Bakugou an encouraging smile. There’s a peck on the lips before a gruelling day of work begins.

It’s on the third night when Bakugou puts on a comedy and makes himself comfortable on the couch with Todoroki beside him, in which Todoroki looks at him with concern and asks outright, “are you feeling unwell?”

Bakugou frowns and looks at Todoroki albeit strangely, “no, are you?” He immediately becomes scared that it was the takeaway they had for dinner – he knows they should’ve just cooked and eaten at home, at least that way he knows exactly what he’s eating. But he quickly realises that no, Todoroki is referring to his behaviour.

Todoroki shakes his head, “no, but are you getting, nightmares?” He’s concerned that Bakugou isn’t sleeping well.

Straight away, Bakugou feels like he’s falling in love with Todoroki Shouto all over again. Making a face, Bakugou leans in closer to Todoroki so that their arms are touching, “I’m not”, Bakugou denies – which is true. He hasn’t had one for a long time. “Just wanna watch movies”. Again, which is true, he’s just choosing not to reveal the whole reason to the other professional hero. Because he wants to see Todoroki Shouto’s sleeping face without Todoroki Shouto being aware that Bakugou is trying fucking hard to do so.

Todoroki hums and nods, his confidence still strong and stable for Bakugou. Bakugou definitely makes it further this time, in fact, he makes it till the end, barely, but still there. Bakugou isn’t even half awake as he stumbles into their bedroom, Todoroki guiding him carefully and even tucks him into bed. Bakugou’s head is swimming in pain and filled with lethargy. He can hear his brain nag him about staying awake just a tad longer so that he can observe Todoroki’s sleeping face. But at the same time, he can hear his brain coerce him to postpone his mission till another day. Sleep first. And with the soft smile Todoroki gives him and the light kisses on his cheek, Bakugou lets his eyes close and he falls to sleep.

The next morning, Bakugou wakes up to Todoroki Shouto watching him sleep.

Bakugou eventually discovers that watching movies at night won’t be able to keep him up longer than Todoroki. He still ends up sleeping before Todoroki does and Bakugou starts wondering how Todoroki is able to function on such little sleep. It doesn’t help that he still gets dragged out of bed at the same time each morning despite sleeping some hours later – it’s not enough and it leaves Bakugou feeling irritated and agitated. And still not seeing Todoroki’s sleeping face only adds to the edging frustration.

Therefore, Bakugou tries other methods, the next one was doing chores to try and stay up later than bloody Todoroki Shouto. Bakugou starts with cleaning the kitchen and the pantry. It takes him a long time, but Todoroki joins him and that long time ends up enjoyable. Before Bakugou can even blink twice, Todoroki is tucking him into bed again with a press of lips on lips. Bakugou is tired and sleeps soundly. He’ll try again tomorrow – Bakugou thinks sleepily.

Bakugou wakes up with wide eyes and sits up immediately. He looks next to him and Todoroki is already awake and looking at him with a concerned face – his hand already gently on Bakugou’s arm to calm him down. The thing is, he was shocked that he had let him sleep before Todoroki, again. He hadn’t woken up from a nightmare which seems to be what Todoroki is thinking. Knowing that things hadn’t worked out again, Bakugou flops back down into bed and turns so that he’s facing Todoroki fully. His hand goes to lock fingers with Todoroki’s own and then brings the hands under their covers. There is no need for words. And he’s definitely okay with early morning sex.

That night, Bakugou kicks Todoroki into the bedroom and tells him to rest up whilst he keeps himself busy and as awake as possible cleaning the bathroom. Each time Todoroki comes in to check up on how Bakugou is, Bakugou makes sure he thoroughly shoves Todoroki back into the bathroom and tells him to get some sleep, knucklehead.

Todoroki’s “I’m not sleepy”, is death to Bakugou’s ears.

Bakugou sighs and realises that perhaps chores aren’t working when he walks out of the bathroom and sees Todoroki cleaning their lounge room. When Todoroki notices his presence, he gives the other a smile, puts what he’s doing down and goes over and attaches himself to Bakugou’s back silently.

Clingy dick.

Like a flash, Bakugou drops the idea of trying to stay up late by doing chores. The next night, he brews himself a cup of coffee and goes through some paperwork and had brought home from the agency. It was boring, but it has to be done.

Todoroki comments on the coffee, “Katsuki, caffeine at night?” With a side eye, Bakugou can see the apprehension in the other’s expression and the concern laced tone of voice made Bakugou’s heart weigh heavily.

“There was just an overflow of paperwork today”, Bakugou explains, which isn’t a lie, but he didn’t have to finish it all by the next working day…

“I’m sorry I can’t help”, Todoroki says quietly. And it makes sense, they’re not from the same agency. There are privacy issues, and Bakugou is glad that Todoroki hasn’t forgotten that, not that he had expected him to. Bakugou does look more than just a glance when Todoroki does take a seat opposite Bakugou, also with his own cup of coffee. Clearly that won’t be good if Todoroki also has coffee… because that just means he’ll stay up even longer.

“Don’t force yourself”, Bakugou chastises and points his chin at Todoroki’s coffee.

“I’m not”, Todoroki is calm as he smiles at Bakugou.

Bakugou ends up sleeping before Todoroki, again.

He tries tea instead of coffee, but the results are the same. In fact, Todoroki thinks he being the absolute gentleman as he kept refilling the tea pot. In most circumstances, yes, he was being an absolute darling, but, Bakugou had a goal. And for him to achieve that goal, Todoroki needed to be asleep.

ASLEEP.

Reeling his pride in, Bakugou decides he’d do the opposite to what he’s been doing, he’d go back to what he prefers – sleeping early. And, he’d wake up even earlier than Todoroki. Just once. To see Todoroki’s slumbering expression. So Bakugou sets up an early alarm. And he misses it the first time around. And the second time around. In fact, he doesn’t wake up to his usual alarm at all, he wakes up with Todoroki gently shaking him awake. He had missed all his alarms. And he’s 100% sure Todoroki had eventually switched it off and let him continue to sleep. Because all important things, he’d let Todoroki know of, just in case he does miss his alarms and need Todoroki to softly smack him awake. If he dared.

“Katsuki”

Bakugou still feels sleepy and sluggish when Todoroki brings him back to reality. He starts to think that if he can wake up seeing Todoroki’s beautiful eyes and sweet smile, he’s definitely happy, why does he even want to see the other’s sleeping face? He forgets the reason altogether and lets Todoroki pull him out of bed and pamper him in the bathroom. Life was good.

He does wonder why the heat of summer isn’t waking him up even earlier in the mornings. But he supposes that even if it did get him up earlier, the blistering heat of summer will also have Todoroki up even earlier.

But Bakugou does wake up and he remembers why he wants to see Todoroki’s sleeping face, honestly why not?

He ventures with confidence and pops his alarm on again. And this time, he wakes up with the first ring. Bakugou has quick reflexes and the alarm is shut immediately. Bakugou holds his breath and looks over to Todoroki. His posture is good, Bakugou notes, still sleeping on his back like Bakugou had advised him of so many, many years ago – how he managed to do so is a story for another time. Todoroki’s head is tilted away from Bakugou. Carefully, Bakugou pushes himself up from the bed and stretches over to see if he can peek at Todoroki’s sleeping face. He thinks he should be bold and just do it, but there’s a touch of anxiousness and anticipation wiggling in his heart and that leaves him with his toes curling.

Except that moment doesn’t come as Todoroki shifts and his head comes swinging towards Bakugou, his eyes open and a tender small smile on his face already. “Katsuki”.

“Shouto”, Bakugou replies straight away and lets himself fall back into the bed. He also lets a small smile paint his face when Todoroki scoots closer and pulls him in closer and presses his lips on the nook between Bakugou’s eyes. Bakugou doesn’t giggle, but he does feel somewhat shy. He lets his eyes flutter and bask in Todoroki’s presence. The frustration of missing another chance of seeing Todoroki’s sleeping face washing off him quickly.

It became clear all too quickly to Bakugou that Todoroki would wake up just as quickly with the alarm. Bakugou use to be a light sleeper, but ever since he shacked up with Todoroki Shouto, he got use to having someone else in his bed, warm fingers dancing over his skin and cold toes battling it out under the covers that Bakugou found he became less and less of a light sleeper. He felt even heavier and his mind sunk even quicker into the depths of sleep. In other words, it’s all bloody Todoroki Shouto’s fault. But, Bakugou doesn’t hate that. He can give up being a light sleeper if it meant he could sleep reassuringly with little worries littering his mind and Todoroki pressed against him.

Bakugou laughs to himself when Todoroki mumbles how it may be a bit too early for sex. He can live with Todoroki thinking that Bakugou was travelling with the early alarms set for sex. Why not?

The next morning, Bakugou puts headphones into his phone and turns the vibration off so that only he can hear his alarm go off. But Todoroki has an arm slung around his waist and wakes up as soon as he feels Bakugou shift too much under his touch.

Seriously, why was it so difficult to catch a glimpse of this man’s slumbering expression. He wants his socks blown off from the beauty of it. He wonders what Todoroki thinks when he sees his sleeping face. He knows Todoroki watches him sleep all the bloody time. Now and then. And surely in the future too. He use to call it creepy (now it’s just expected and almost lovesick) and told the other off when he woke up to see Todoroki’s twinkling eyes and fond smile if not often lecherous. They were still children back then. Now that they are professional heroes, not much has changed at all. And even if it were, Bakugou believes it can only be for the better. So, it wouldn’t be so wrong for Todoroki to be asleep whilst Bakugou is awake. No?

Eventually in the middle of summer, Bakugou meets up with the self-proclaimed Bakugou Gundan for their sometimes monthly catch up session. Yakiniku. Which is fine, except he’s not too keen on indulging too much in it over the summer days. Being the two youngest in the group, Ashido and Kirishima are default designated to cook and make sure that the meat is cooked to perfection for their favourite Bakugou Katsuki. Bakugou rolls his eyes and just lets them continue along with their antics, you’d think he’d be immune to it after so many years, but it still irks him and kind of rubs him in the wrong way sometimes – usually when they take the joke too far and literally start worshipping the land in which his shoes slide over – they’re usually drunk on sugar or have an early death wish when that happens.

The conversation over dinner ends up back on Bakugou’s quest on witnessing Todoroki’s slumbering face. There’s mocking laughter all over the table when they figure out that nup, Bakugou hasn’t yet. But not because he failed. Pft. Bakugou Katsuki doesn’t fail. He’s just in the process – still heading towards success. There may be a couple of hiccups along the way, but it’s not failure. He’ll accept being in struggle-town, but he’s gallantly there.

“You should drug him”, Kaminari proposes.

Bakugou slams his palm in Kaminari’s face and takes the slice of meat from Kaminari’s chopsticks and gobbles it up, “stop being stupid”. And he remembers Kaminari just can’t. Him and Kirishima are the idiot duo. And it just all blows up when Sero and Ashido keep egging them on and tell them that their ideas are fuckin’ awesome.

No.

Mostly no.

But drugging Todoroki is definitely a no. Even if he weren’t on call, it’s still a no. A massive NO.

“How about setting up cameras to record everything and then watching it the next day?” Kirishima suggests.

Bakugou slams the same palm in Kirishima’s face, “shut up, idiot”. As expected of the idiot duo. He glares at Ashido and Sero and dares either of them to recommend another abhorring idea.

“Just tell him”, Sero definitely does not lack in confidence, he speaks to Bakugou with a flashy bright smile, “that you want to see his sleeping face like the shoujo heroine you are”.

“Hime”, Kirishima corrects. Sero agrees with a nod straight away.

Bakugou cracks his knuckles, his blood-thirsty grin widens as he glares at this supposed Bakugou Gundan. Sero’s smile doesn’t drop.

“Or”, Ashido’s eyes twinkle and her voice is filled with a playful giggle, Bakugou’s threat clearly of no influence to her demeanour, “Hime, you could just sex him up”.

Dinner stops instantly. At least the restaurant doesn’t end up blown up with the way Bakugou was raging. The Bakugou Gundan really was only making his low grumbling headache even worse.

After Bakugou calms down – Todoroki had to come pick him up – the Bakugou Gundan skedaddle off with cheeky smiles.

Todoroki Shouto – the current centre of Bakugou Katsuki’s current mission. Bakugou felt afterwards it was maybe not very stupid of his friends to call Todoroki to come pick him up when he’s wanting to pummel the whole Gundan into the floor. His thoughts were distracted and all he wants is to get home and get Todoroki to sleep. He even lets Todoroki keep an arm around his waist the whole time they go home. It was dark, and the streets are empty. Stuff the public. If Bakugou Katsuki wants his lover holding him in public after a stupid dinner, he will. There isn’t anything that he’s afraid of. And he’s proud of that fact.

After all, it takes Todoroki a great deal to do anything intimate in public. Because he just isn’t the type to do so. And Bakugou understands that. Especially with the paparazzi swarming around them like flies.

Bakugou tries not to think about the shitty advice his friends gave him over their most recent dinner together. Instead he wants to suss out why Todoroki is such an insomniac. How can one even sleep so little and still be so functional and have such a bloody good looking face. It doesn’t make sense. He can hear his mother telling him that that’s definitely how one gets good skin. Not that Bakugou needs to worry about that, he drinks plenty of water and sleeps the perfect number of hours (until recently). But perhaps he should worry about it on behalf of Todoroki. Bakugou runs his fingers across Todoroki’s arm and he thinks the skin isn’t too bad, his cheeks were… they could be softer. Like his own. But, well, can’t be perfect.

However, Bakugou reminds himself that Todoroki Shouto is perfect for him though. Now, if only he can catch a glimpse even, of Todoroki’s sleeping expression, then that would be the bomb.

So, with conviction, Bakugou opens the topic of holidays with Todoroki. It’s summer, good weather to take advantage of this idea of his.

“Let’s go on a trip”, Bakugou kicks Todoroki’s foot off his leg so that he can place his own feet over Todoroki’s legs as they lounge on the sofa.

“Sure”, Todoroki says straight away and stacks one foot on Bakugou’s legs so their legs are criss-crossing.

“Okay”, Bakugou nods and squeezes the one leg in between his own spiritedly, “anywhere you wanna go?”

“Depends how long?” Todoroki scoots a little so that he could reach over press his fingers on Bakugou’s arms.

“And where”, Bakugou hums thoughtfully.

Todoroki mimics Bakugou’s hum subconsciously.

“Izumo?” Bakugou swipes open his phone and starts looking it up, “we don’t have to go for long, a few days”.

“We can take the shinkansen, stop through the cities?” Todoroki adds happily, “sounds alright”.

“We’ll go on a soba tour”, Bakugou smiles wryly and it only widens and is laced with amusement as he watches Todoroki’s expression light up even more. And Bakugou wants to laugh when Todoroki scoots super close to him and press their faces together. They pull apart and Todoroki is the one who ends up laughing in joy.

They apply for leave and then book tickets to start their semi-impulsive trip. Bakugou is bubbling, because this is the chance. They walk hand in hand to the shinkansen with only a backpack on their backs and small whispers between them.

Todoroki will have to sleep on the shinkansen.

He’s got this in the bag.

Bakugou plugs his earphones in and is well prepared as they take their seat on the shinkansen. He looks over to Todoroki to see the other already looking at him warmly. And even more so when Todoroki reaches to hold Bakugou’s hand in his own.

“You forgot your earphones?” Bakugou asks and offers the other the right ear phone.

“No”, Todoroki says but takes the earphone and pops it in his ear anyway, “just want to watch you”.

Bakugou frowns. It was back to this creepy business, “just go sleep”, he scoffs.

Todoroki shakes his head, “media’s watching”.

Fuck. Bakugou realises they had forgot to disguise themselves. He’s so use to all eyes on him that it’s become a part of his life already. This romantic getaway they were currently starting will be the headline of news in a few hours, he’s sure. Great, more of their life used as fodder for all the punter spawns. No wonder Todoroki doesn’t want to sleep. Bakugou himself doesn’t want to either now that he’s cruelly reminded of this.

Maybe they should’ve taken the night train so they at least get some semblance of privacy.

They arrive in Kyoto and they step out with the sun still shining brightly in the sky. The two walk around for a short while, Bakugou stops and looks at the blooming hydrangeas and appreciates them for their colour.

“My old hag and old man give each other a bunch of these every time they got into an argument”, Bakugou mentions with a shrug and an off-handed tone.

“They argue?” Todoroki asks, his impression of Bakugou’s father as being incredibly passive was most definitely clouding his judgement.

“All bloody couples argue”, Bakugou rolls his eyes, “when the old man wanted something, he’d give the old hag a bunch of these, apparently it means, thank you for understanding”.

Todoroki smiles.

Bakugou returns the smile, “she accepted it every bloody single time.”

“Relationships can’t happen without compromise after all”, Todoroki huffs happily, his eyes twinkling as he looks straight into Bakugou’s eyes.

“Yes, yes”, Bakugou rolls his eyes, “let’s go get you your matcha soba”. The two share a small laugh together before they go and try Todoroki’s craving – refreshing matcha soba – and then they hop on another train. Even after changing trains a couple of times, Todoroki doesn’t give any hint of sleeping at all.

The sun has set by the time they reach Izumo. The first thing they do when they reach Izumo is to check in to their ryokan. Easy. He knows the people working there recognise them, but they don’t bombard and harass them for photos or autographs, and Bakugou appreciates that. As expected of professionals.

Their dinner is served inside their rooms, and Bakugou couldn’t be any happier as he relaxes comfortably in his room with Todoroki opposite him as they enjoy a carefully crafted dinner. The rest of their night is filled with light banter. Bakugou can’t help but continually yawn himself to sleep after his bath even as he tries to remember that he wants to stay up a little bit longer still, to see if he can catch a glimpse of Todoroki’s sleeping face.

The next morning, as per usual, Todoroki is already awake by the time Bakugou woke up.

“I’m glad you’re sleeping better these days, Katsuki”, Todoroki says softly into Bakugou’s ears as Bakugou blinks away his sleep. It’s with those words in which Bakugou truly realises how strange his recent behaviour must’ve been and how much it must’ve worried Todoroki. There’s a seed of guilt that sinks to his feet.

Bakugou’s eyes are still closed as he hums and tightens his hand around Todoroki’s own. It wasn’t sickly warm. It was comfortable.

“Shall we sleep a little bit more before we get up for breakfast and tour Izumo?” Todoroki suggests, his voice heavy as he talks, his breath brushing Bakugou’s cheeks.

Bakugou’s eyes fly straight open and he knows that was his mistake, because Todoroki had felt him tense up.

“No?” Todoroki looks slightly bewildered, “I’m up for whatever you want”.

“No”, Bakugou smiles reassuringly and presses his lips against Todoroki’s chin, “sleeping is perfect”. Indeed, it is. This is his chance time. Except with the way Todoroki was feeling him up – he doubts Todoroki wants to sleep sleep any time soon.

And Bakugou was damn right and even continues thinking about it as he scrubs himself clean in the bathroom before heading out for breakfast. Todoroki waits on the tatami mat and nurses his side in which Bakugou had ruthlessly attacked in the midst of their passion. Bakugou already finds himself in enough aches and pains – sitting on a train for over 10 hours doesn’t help. And then early morning exercise with Todoroki and his endless stamina and sticky fingers… Bakugou knows he’s spending forever to clean himself up. But he rather go explore Izumo feeling fresh and clean than thoroughly debauched. When the aches kick in and makes certain areas harder to reach and clean, Bakugou thinks perhaps he should’ve just said yes to Todoroki’s suggestion of round nth in the shower. Maybe then, Todoroki could help him clean the hard to reach areas.

But, Bakugou rescinds that thought instantly. They’d never get time to explore Izumo had that actually happened. When Bakugou walks out of the bathroom, he is pleasantly surprised to see Todoroki lying on the tatami mat freely. Sprawled out as much as Todoroki can – which usually isn’t much. He seems to like keeping his limbs to himself when they’re not stuck on him… and he’s pleasantly asleep.

Asleep.

And he looks… normal.

“Shouto?” Bakugou says very quietly, trying to determine whether the other really is asleep. Todoroki breathes softly and doesn’t move. Swallowing loudly, Bakugou goes over and kneels down to take a closer look. He supposes it’s endearing. The longer he looks the longer he thinks it’s definitely endearing and he is starting to understand why Todoroki enjoys looking at his own sleeping face so much. Bakugou gently prods one of Todoroki’s cheeks and smiles cheekily when Todoroki mumbles a little bit but doesn’t stir otherwise.

Todoroki’s face in general is something in which Bakugou likes, whether he’s awake, asleep, grumpy, smiling or using that sinful mouth and talking about absolute garbage. It doesn’t matter if there’s drool or sleep talking. All the same to Bakugou. Perhaps Bakugou knew this from the very start already, even without seeing Todoroki’s sleeping face, he knew he would love it regardless. Seeing it is already a confirmation.

Bakugou semi-glides across the tatami without flexing his legs too much to grab his phone and he snaps a photo of Todoroki’s slumbering expression. Immediately, Bakugou uploads the photo to his drive so that he has a backup copy, always. He then pockets his phone before he leans in to give Todoroki a kiss on the nose. Satisfied, Bakugou then nudges Todoroki’s legs with his own to wake the other up. Mission accomplished. It was well worth the wait. And he’s glad he didn’t take onboard any of his stupid friend’s stupid advice, at least not directly anyway.

Todoroki groans and shakes himself awake.

“Rise and shine”, Bakugou is smug as he looks down at the other.

Rolling his eyes, Todoroki gets up and hugs Bakugou, “whatever”. They spend their day trekking through Izumo, visiting multiple shrines along their route for a Izumo soba discovery. They pass by hydrangeas again and again and eventually, Bakugou pulls Todoroki over and takes a selfie together with the hydrangeas. He sends it to his parents.

Even on the train ride home, Bakugou feels content and he hides his face in Todoroki’s shoulder as he falls asleep. He doesn’t need to check to know that the media is keeping the public updated on this summer romantic getaway of theirs. But at that point in time, it doesn’t even matter to Bakugou anymore. He had not the perfect trip, but it was in every sense enjoyable.

Bakugou’s routine then returns to normal, sleeping before Todoroki Shouto and waking after Todoroki Shouto. So what if he sleeps more than Todoroki Shouto? Everyone is different and has their own needs. Bakugou isn’t ashamed.

“You really are sleeping better”, Todoroki remarks, carding his hand through Bakugou’s short hair, fingers pressing gently to try and massage away the dull throb Bakugou is suffering from after a long day at work.

Bakugou groans in response, “yeah”.

“Was worried you were sick for a while”, Todoroki mutters.

“Nah”, Bakugou stretches his limbs and closes his eyes, “all good, keep going”.

Bakugou misses the fond smile from Todoroki as he himself falls into a peaceful slumber.
