With a sigh that was virtually a groan Lin shifted again for what seemed the hundredth time that night.
The poor excuse of what that idiot thought of as a couch was hard. His back was not happy.
With protesting back he sat up, shoving the blanket on the ground and glared in the direction of Banba’s room. He’d almost been sleeping, almost when his moronic drunken housemate had dragged himself back from a night of drinking. It had almost been comical, he’d watched one eye open as Banba had tried to be quiet as he guzzled some mouthwash at the sink, only to drop the bottle twice in the sink, and then kick his shins on the door on the way back to this room with a muffled yelp.
Lin sighed again. It was almost midnight, at this rate he’d never get any sleep.
He should be used to this, he’d slept on hard floors most of his childhood, and often not much better after he’d gotten to Japan. Maybe being here, in this tiny apartment/office with the idiot had made him soft. His back was killing him.
‘Screw this,’ he said out loud.
He’d seen Banba’s bed, it was a double, more than enough to fit two. And if the idiot expected him to pay back that fish for the next few years the least he could do was give him a nicer place to sleep.
‘If you have a problem with it, buy me a decent bed,’ Lin grumbled as he made his way to Banba’s bedroom. He decided to return the favour, and make as much noise as Banba had made. It was probably a wise decision. Banba was the most laid back assassin he’d ever met, but it was never a good idea to startle one in bed.
He flicked on the switch. Banba was in his pyjamas, splayed across the futon on his stomach.
‘I’m sharing the bed,’ Lin announced loudly.
‘Muuufff,’ Banba murmured into his pillow. Otherwise not a movement, barely a twitch.
‘Right,’ Lin said loudly, and then he crawled on the bed. Digging in his knees and back he pushed Banba to the side, or he at least tried to.
It was like moving a sack of bricks.
‘You fucking weigh a ton, idiot-Banba,’ Lin grumbled as he pushed against Banba’s back again. ‘Shove aside.’
‘What…Lin-chan?’ Banba looked at him with a bleary eyes before rolling across and then falling back into unconsciousness.
‘Thank you,’Lin said sarcastically.
He got up once more to switch the light off, before dropping back onto his side of the bed with a relieved sigh.

The mattress was heaven, soft but not too soft and he curled into the extra pillow happily faced away from the slumbering sack of bricks.
‘It smelt nice, the pillow and the sheets and,’ Lin’s eyes opened suddenly. ‘It smelt like Banba.’
Well obviously it smelt like Banba, Lin thought as he rolled onto his back looking at the dark ceiling. This was Banba’s bed, what else did would it smell like?
Beside him Banba snorted into his pillow and then stilled. Lin deliberately didn’t look.
When had he decided he liked Banba’s smell? When had even noticed what he even smelt like?
Lin couldn’t remember. All he knew was that he liked that smell. He closed his eyes, it was useless to think about it too deeply. That was his last thought before sleep took him under.

Being too warm was what woke him up, that and a heavy weight on his chest. For a micro-second he nearly panicked until realisation came to him. The angle of the street light from the window reminding him of where he was. The weight on him was Banba, snoring away softly. The idiot had draped himself over him, his fluffy head tucked under armpit, one arm around him tightly like he was hugging a security blanket
‘Idiot,’ Lin said roughly. His throat tight. His hand, meant to shove Banba aside, stopped when he felt the soft thick hair. It was as if his hand had a mind of its own, as it buried itself there. Soft hair, lovely really, Lin was quite envious.
He decided not to shove Banba away.
It felt good, safe. In a way it reminded him a little of the times his sister had laid with him, when they were little on the floor. He brushed those memories away, not wanting to examine it too closely, wary of the hurt it would bring.
Even Banba’s hair smells nice, he thought as he slipped into sleep again.

When he woke again, it was to Banba’s eyes, dark in the pale dawn light.
Banba smiled. ‘Morning, Lin-chan.’ And then, without warning he was swept by arms onto Banba like he was some teddy bear, or more like a blanket. Lin on top.
‘Oi…what are you doing, idiot?’ Lin grumbled, but he didn’t really feel like shoving way.
‘You feel nice,’ Banba mumbled, a hand though his hair.
‘You’re still drunk, aren’t you?’ Lin asked, liking the feel of those arms around his waist he buried his face in Banba’s shoulder.
Banba spoke against his ear. ‘I’m hurt, Lin-chan!’
Evidently Banba didn’t care one bit that Lin had sneaked into bed with him. In fact, it seemed quite the opposite.
‘I’ll kill you if you try anything,’ Lin said pulling his face back, he felt his face getting hot, and his tummy doing a flip flop at being so close to Banba.
Banba laughed again, tightening his hold around his waist and brushed his lips with one thumb. ‘That’s definitely not cute, Lin-chan.’
‘I’m not here to be cute for you, idiot-Banba.’ He wriggled his way to the side, not really trying to escape, only trying to get more comfortable. He was glad for the old pajamas that Banba had lent him.
They were now side by side, Banba’s arms still around him. In the half-light Banba looked amused.
‘So what brings you to my bed, Lin-chan.’ If he didn’t know any better, he’d say that Banba’s voice was a little uncertain. But that was ludicrous, Banba was an idiot, but he was never uncertain about anything – the guy was irritatingly confident in everything he did. It often pissed Lin off.
‘Your couch is hard and it kills my back. I wanted to sleep somewhere decent for a change.’
‘Oh?’ Banba tapped his back lightly.
‘You hadn’t yielded to my sexy charms?’ Banba smirked.
‘What if I had?’ As soon as the words were out of his mouth he regretted it, not even Banba’s wide eyed look of surprise, and with it the satisfaction that he could for once break through that idiotic confidence could subdue the humiliation that pierced him.
‘Lin-chan, you-‘
‘I mean you’re still an idiot and not as cool or charming as you think, but…what if, what if I had wanted something?’ Lin really wanted to close his eyes, but forced himself to watch as Banba regarded him silently. A silence that went on a little too long. Humiliation fell on Lin, a bitter taste in his mouth.
‘You know what, forget it.’ Lin went to wrench Banba’s arm from around his waist. An arm that would not let him go.
‘Oi, Lin, just don’t, settle down okay.’
Lin gave up the struggle, flopping back, and gave Banba a hard look. ‘Well then, say something, Banba-san. Don’t screw around. If you want me say so.’ He wasn’t going to ask again.
‘You are so not cute,’ Banba said, but it was fond, and he reached over to cup Lin’s cheek, pulling back strands of his hair that had gone astray.
‘I’m not trying to-‘
‘I know. You’re not cute at all. You’re beautiful.’
Lin’s heart almost stopped, not only at Banba’s words but the way they were said. Lin was used to Banba’s usual tone, always flippant, half-joking and never serious. This was nothing like that. This was serious.
‘Don’t,’ Lin swallowed, speaking suddenly difficult and his voice rough. ‘Don’t mess with me.’
‘I wouldn’t. You’re beautiful, and I want you.’ Banba kept stroking his hair. ‘I want you Lin-chan. In any way you need me.’
‘You’re such an idiot,’ Lin said, half sobbing as he felt tears forming.
He was pulled in close, one hand cradling the back of his head, and then a kiss on his brow. Lin buried his head in Banba’s chest, trying to stop the tears but failing.
‘Well, it’s understandable.’ Banba nuzzled the top of his head. ‘You’re overwhelmed by my sexy cool presence.’
‘Idiot.’ Lin punched Banba on the shoulder lightly. But Lin didn’t pull away and Banba didn’t let him go.
