Work Text:
“Are you going to Iida’s wedding?” Izuku asks.
“Who was that again?” Katsuki replies.
“Come on, you know exactly who it is!” Ochako protests, and Izuku has to resist laughing. It isn’t often that the three of them are together like this, but it has, at least, been happening a little more often lately, which is progress.
“You must have gotten an invitation,” he goes on. “I’m pretty sure everyone in our old class did.”
“Maybe I did. So what?”
“Kacchan, I already asked if you were going.”
“Wasn’t planning on it. Why? Were you gonna say we we could all go together or something?”
“Actually, that’s exactly what I was going to say.”
“As if!”
Izuku and Ochako already know that he’s going to go with them, though.

Iida and Yaoyorozu are Evenings, and Todoroki and Kendo are Mornings, and it seems like just yesterday that they announced their engagement, but now, the wedding is fast approaching. With everyone’s lives as busy as they are, it’s hard for the former classmates to see each other often; Izuku hardly sees anyone, besides Ochako and Katsuki.
Ochako and Katsuki are both Mornings, and Izuku is an Evening, and it should be as simple as that, but nothing has ever been simple where Katsuki is involved. Though he and Ochako are able to fully admit their relationship now, Katsuki still likes to pretend that he has no part in it, yet won’t actually stop hanging around them. Izuku wonders, if they found another Evening, if Katsuki might settle down more, but with someone like him, it’s impossible to tell.
It’s also probably going to be a challenge to find anyone who can put up with him.

Just as he predicted, Katsuki does attend the wedding with them, claiming that it’s because he didn’t have anything better to do, and Izuku and Ochako agree ahead of time not to tease him too much. The ceremony itself is beautiful, and Izuku gets more than a little misty-eyed a few times.
A majority of their old classmates are there, which is nice to see, and the reception is more like a class reunion for the two hero classes of their year. It’s also interesting to see how everyone else is doing on the marriage front; Izuku notices that Kirishima and Tetsutetsu are still exclusive, and that Koda, Jiro, and Kaminari, and Tokoyami, Shoji, and Mineta still haven’t found fourths either. Some people are there with people he doesn’t know, and others are there with people he’s only seen on the news, and some are there alone.
Asui is one of those, and she and Ochako immediately pair off to get caught up, leaving Izuku alone with Katsuki. He’s already said his congratulations to the brides and grooms, and they’re surrounded at nearly all times, so he likely won’t have any further chance to talk with Iida or Todoroki, and Katsuki seems just as awkward here as he does anywhere that he has to try to be friendly.
And then the music starts, and the four have their first dance, switching partners from time to time, and once that is done, the guests are invited to join them. Ochako is at Izuku’s side in no time at all, saying, “May I have this dance?”
He wonders if he should feel guilty for ditching Katsuki, but when he turns to the other man, he just scowls and says, “You don’t need to ask my damn permission, Deku.”
So he goes with her, though he can’t help but steal a few glances at Katsuki from time to time, and Ochako laughs. “He’s not going to get into trouble if you leave him by himself for a few minutes, you know.”
“I know, but you know how he is,” he replies. “Wonder if he’d dance with me if I asked nicely.”
“Depends on the mood he’s in,” she says, “because I know exactly how he is. It’s worth a shot, though!”
“He’s so difficult,” Izuku says with a sigh, “but-”
“But he’s going to come around someday, and you know the wait’s worth it,” Ochako finishes, having heard this from him several times. “Like I always say, I’m with you either way! Besides, even if he’s a jerk most of the time, he’s softened up so much since school that I’d almost say we’re friends now!”
“He likes you, in that Kacchan way.”
“Well, after all this time, I’d hope he does.”
They go back and forth as they dance, talking about things, until suddenly there is a tap on Izuku’s shoulder. He turns to see Asui standing behind him, and she says, “Mind if I cut in? I’d like to steal your partner for a little bit.”
He turns back to Ochako, who grins and says, “This is your chance to ask Katsuki to dance!”
“Yeah, I guess I can see how that goes,” he mumbles, before waving her off. She takes Tsuyu’s offered hand, and the two begin to dance; he turns back to where Katsuki is standing, and when they lock eyes, Katsuki scowls and looks off to the side.
Things don’t look promising, but he still goes over to him anyway, pausing for a moment. Katsuki mutters, “I already know what you’re gonna ask, Deku.”
“So, why don’t you give me your answer, then?”
“Don’t get used to it,” he says, stepping forward and offering a hand. Izuku can barely believe it, but he’s glad to have Katsuki behaving a little more warmly for once. Perhaps being at a wedding put even him in a more romantic mood, as unlikely as it seems.
“So, she ditched you for the frog girl?” he asks, once they’re dancing together, a bit more awkwardly than Izuku and Ochako did.
“Well, they were always pretty good friends,” Izuku replies. “They’ve been trying to get caught up, I think.”
“Or they’re into each other.”
“Huh?” For a second, Izuku thinks he’s misheard the other man. It’s not like Katsuki to read into situations like that, or have a handle on others’ feelings.
“The frog’s an Evening like you, isn’t she?” he asks, like that explains everything.
“W-well, yeah, she is, but…”
“Well, maybe that’s what it is. I mean, maybe not, maybe I’m wrong, but weren’t they, like, friends?”
“They were pretty good friends…”
“So maybe you’re just being dense, Deku,” he says, and Izuku wishes that he could point out the irony behind Katsuki saying that, but he holds his tongue. “Not that it’s any concern of mine, I honestly don’t give a fuck what they do.”
“If Asui and Ochako started seeing each other, it would concern you,” Izuku replies. “It would concern both of us.”
“Hey, don’t go roping me into this again!” Katsuki snaps.
“You’re the one dancing with me,” he says with a slight smile. “I think you’re doing a pretty good job of roping yourself into it.”
“I’ll kick your ass for that one.”
“At a wedding reception? Really, Kacchan?”
“Stupid Deku, I don’t give a damn where we are! If I have to, I’ll dance you to death!”
~X~
Later, when he has a chance to talk to Ochako, he tries to ask her about Asui, but she dances around the subject, seeming more interested in learning about his dance with Katsuki. Izuku supposes that pretty much confirms things.
~X~
Back in school, Asui was always calm and collected, able to handle high tension situations, and able to befriend just about anyone. She and Katsuki were never close, but he was always difficult to get close to, even for those he was actually friends with. Izuku doesn’t know how they’ll get along now, but a part of them hopes that they will, that Asui’s cool attitude will be a good match for Katsuki’s quick temper, and that her blunt honesty will break through his frequent denial.
As for how he and Asui get along, Izuku always considered her one of his friends, and looking back now, he wonders why he never considered her for this, why he never noticed the connection she had with Ochako. Maybe he really is the dense one, but at the very least, they have a chance now. He’s starting to get Ochako to admit that there’s something going on between her and the other woman; the next step is to get Katsuki to take an interest.
Which might be difficult, considering he still won’t admit he’s dating anyone at all right now, but it’s not like they’re trying to get married soon, so there’s time to figure that out as well.
