First Time For Everything

Summary:

Agreeing to go on a date with Nanami...that can't end too badly, right?

Notes:

Book 4 is as far as what's available where I live. I won't be reading ahead with any scanlations or such since I want to support the official release.

In other notes, I have ideas for both a one-sided love Sayaka-centric story, as well as a long Riko x Miyako story, so if you have interest in either of those things, I'd love to know about that! Anyways, please enjoy~!

Work Text:

Today is the day.

She’s going on a date with Nanami.

She’s not really sure why it is she’s doing this. She just can’t say no to the older girl. She really doesn’t know why. It’s like there’s some sort of weird gravitational pull that glues her to Nanami’s hip.

It’s not love, she’s sure. And besides, she’d already promised that she wouldn’t fall in love with her. She’d promised her…

So no, she’s definitely not in love.

But Nanami had asked to go on a date with her. And for whatever reason, she’d said yes.

The plan for the date was simple, pretty much the most typical date imaginable. They’d start off by going to a cafe. Not Miyako’s, of course. A walk in the park to see the cherry blossoms, a movie. Basic and simple. That was probably for the better though. She wouldn’t really know what she’d want to do on a date.

And standing with half her wardrobe pulled out in front of her, she realized that she didn’t really know what to wear on a date either. She mixes and matches things, holding the various items up in front of herself in the mirror, but nothing looks...right. Why’s she getting so worked up about this anyways? It’s not like she’s trying to impress her or anything like that. She’s sure Nanami would think she’s cute even if she wore the ugliest dress imaginable.

It was just the nature of it, she supposes. When a girl goes on her first date, she gets all flustered and can’t pick out her outfit. The reason that books and movies always has things like that is probably because there’s some fact to it. She’s having enough trouble with it, after all.

Ugh, what’s she supposed to do about this?

Wait...Maki was supposed to be good at helping girls with their problems, right? She pretty sure she remembers him saying something about that. With no better ideas, she takes a picture of the clothes and sends it to Maki, along with a text reading Can you help? It turns out I’m really bad at this.

A few minutes later she gets a message back, the same picture that she’d sent, with certain pieces of clothing circled in red. Along with a smug smiley face. Oh, screw him.

She almost decides not to put the chosen outfit on out of spite, but upon holding it against herself in front of the mirror she can’t help but begrudgingly admit that it actually looks really nice. Simple, but nice. A pale yellow, long sleeved shirt, accompanied by a pink, pleated skirt and black leggings. Yeah, this’ll work. She reaches over to her phone to text back a thanks, when it rings again. It’s another message from Maki.

You wouldn’t happen to have any hair ribbons, would you? I’ve never seen you wearing any, but I’m positive they would suit you It reads. Oh great, she hates hair ribbons. She almost feels inclined to tell him no just because of that. But this is a...date. Even if she’s only doing this for Nanami’s sake, she should be trying to look her best and act the part...or something. Right? And so reluctantly, she tells Maki that she has an unopened package of pastel ribbons lying around somewhere. Almost instantaneously, she gets a message back telling her to go find it and find out what colors there are.

It takes her almost ten minutes, but eventually she finds the packet buried at the bottom of the closet. She’s so glad she made sure to give herself extra time for this…

Sending a picture of the ribbons off to Maki, she starts tearing at the package. Funny, now that she thinks about it, she’s pretty sure that when her grandma had given these to her, she’d said something about wearing them on a date. She wonders what her grandma would think of this kind of date. Of course, Yuu had thought that she’d never go on a date back when she’d accepted the gift, so it wasn’t really her fault. Or something like that. Her phone dings.

Go for the lilac ones is Maki’s fashion-master reply. Yuu sends back a Thanks for the help and spends the next seven minutes trying to remember how to tie ribbons.

Eventually, the look is satisfactory enough, and she starts making her way out of the house. Wait, is Nanami paying? She’d assumed so, but now that she thinks about it she doesn’t think they ever discussed it. Nanami will probably pay...but she should bring her purse just in case. Luckily, the small black bag doesn’t clash too much with her outfit, and she hurries out the door before anyone can figure out that she’s heading out on a date.

The walk to the cafe goes by far too quickly.

Luckily though, her date isn’t here yet, and so she walks in and takes a seat in the corner at a two person table. Why is she getting so nervous about this? It’s just Nanami, right? And she’d promised that Yuu wouldn’t have to do anything more than normal. So what was she getting so anxious about? She doesn’t get any more time to think about it, though. Because her date has made her arrival.

...Why is Nanami wearing a leather jacket?

Well, it’s not as though she looks bad in it or anything in it. Definitely not. But why would prim and fancy student council president Nanami decide that the best thing to wear would be a leather jacket? Why would she even own a leather jacket!? She looks like she just walked of the world’s most shameless runway, strutting into the cafe in her skinny jeans, white beret cap and goddamn leather jacket. Are those gold earrings?

That all disappears though, the second that Nanami notices her. Any aspect of impropriety is completely lost, replaced by a tomato red girl, sputtering and looking at the ground in embarrassment and slowly shuffling over to Yuu. She looks like she’s about to pass out from overheating and Yuu vaguely wonders if maybe she should be calling a hospital.

“...G-good morning, Yuu! You uh, you look really, cute-I mean, uh, cool today!” She says, fumbling along at rapid speed.

“Thanks. You look nice, too...Big change of pace though.” Yuu replies, unable to help herself from voicing her misgivings. Nanami flushes and starts fiddling with the fabric of her clothes.

“Ah...yeah. I wanted to go for a new type of look...but it doesn’t really suit me, huh?” She says almost shamefully.

“Oh, no no no! You look great, really!” Yuu hastily reassures her. The red of Nanami’s face deepens even more.

“T-thanks...um….Let’s order our stuff!” She says, quickly changing the topic and hurrying over to the counter without another word. Yuu walks over to stand next to her as the older girl quickly scans over the menu on the wall.

“So, uh...what do you want, Yuu?” Nanami asks quietly, as though keeping her voice down will hide the fact that they’re clearly here as a pair.

“Ah, I think I’d like a black coffee and that ‘double decker brownie’ thing.” She replies. Nanami looks almost shocked for a second, but she quickly shakes it off and steps up to the cash register.

“Hello, how can I help you today?” The man behind the counter asks with a classic public servant smile.

“Um, yes. I-we’d like a black coffee, a double decker brownie, a mini cheesecake and...a cup of chamomile tea.” Nanami lists off. Hmm...Nanami isn’t a coffee person, she supposes.

“And the coffee is for…?” The man behind the counter asks, already setting out their sweets.

“Koito” Yuu says quickly, not wanting to give Nanami a chance to make it some embarrassing nickname. The man nods as he hands off the instant tea to Nanami. He totals up their food and Yuu feels almost bad letting Nanami pay for it. Did she have to pick out such an expensive place?

Yuu offers to pay her back as they sit down at a window table but the older girl waves it off instantly.

“Oh it’s fine, Yuu. I’m the one who dragged you out today after all, I’ll pay for everything.” She assures.

“I feel kind of bad though…”Yuu mutters, taking the first bite into her brownie. Damn. That was really good. If she ever agrees to do this again, she’ll ask if they can come back here. Given that Nanami is paying of course. This place is way out of her price range.

“That’s because you’re too nice for your own good, Yuu.” Nanami tells her with a chuckle.

“...Sure. Whatever you say, Nanami.” Yuu says quietly. Her upperclassman stares at her for a while, almost contemplating something. Maybe what she wants to say. Either way, Yuu ends up getting called to get her coffee and she quickly hops up and over to the counter. The man gives her another smile but she doesn’t miss the way that he keeps glancing at her out of the corner of his eye as she makes her way back to the table.

She says nothing as she sits back down and starts blowing on her coffee.

“So, anything new happen since Friday?” Nanami asks, idly fiddling with her fork.

“Nah. I ran into Sayaka at Miyako’s cafe yesterday, but that’s about it.” She answers, recalling the brief interaction. Not much, but pretty much the only event of that whole day that stuck out even a tiny bit. She’d just been relaxing and lazing about for the most of it.

“Oh really? What’d you guys talk about?” Nanami questions, wanting to keep going down this road for whatever reason.

“We didn’t really talk. It was just a ‘hi, bye’ sort of thing. I just happened to bump into her on my way out.” Yuu says, genuinely not recalling anything of significance about the interaction. Just same old Sayaka. Yuu can’t help but wonder if the older girl actually hates her, to be honest. She isn’t exactly the friendliest towards her. But she doesn’t think she’s done anything to make the other girl hate her, either. It’s probably just her imagining things.

“Well that’s still nice I guess!” Nanami says cheerfully. She continues the conversation, asking Yuu about everything there could possibly be to ask about. After about an hour, they finish up and start making their way towards the park. It’s surprisingly deserted.

And so Nanami decides to take advantage of their lack of an audience and grabs hold of Yuu’s hand. Yuu jerks in surprise, but she doesn’t pull her hand away. She looks up at Nanami to see her face beet red. Yuu finds that she’s too nervous to say anything herself. And so the two of them just walk, hand in hand through the park, slowing down to admire the particularly beautiful cherry blossom trees.

It’s...nice.

Yuu finds herself thinking that she doesn’t really want it to ever end.

They eventually come to a bench and Yuu quietly gestures over to it. The two of them sit down, still hand in hand. They just sit there for a while. And the Nanami leans over and gives Yuu a kiss on the cheek. Yuu’s face feels strangely and unusually hot. But if Nanami notices, she doesn’t say anything. Instead, she moves her arm up to Yuu’s shoulder and softly nudges her downward onto her lap. Yuu isn’t sure why she doesn’t resist, or even say anything as the other girl starts petting her head.

They stay like that for a long time, and Yuu is just starting to fade into unconsciousness when a loud crash of thunder cuts through the air.

They look up to see that the lovely day has disappeared as rain rapidly starts beating down on them. They spring to their feet and race to get themselves underneath the limited shelter of the cherry blossom trees. The rain continues to pour down.

“Oh, this is just the worst…” Yuu whines as she fruitlessly tries to get the water off of her. How’d things go from nice to cold and wet so fast?

“...I’m sorry, Yuu.” Nanami whispers.

“...What? Why?” Yuu asks, completely dumbfounded.

“This is all my fault...I dragged you out here like this, and now you’ve wasted your whole day just to end up getting rained on...I’m so sorry.” She mutters, fidgeting anxiously. Her face is too wet for Yuu to be able to tell if those are tears or not.

“Idiot. What are you talking about? You couldn’t have known it was going to start raining! All the weather channels said it was going to be perfect today! What’re you blaming yourself for?” Yuu reasons. She doesn’t get where Nanami’s head is at sometimes.

“I’m still the one who forced you to come spend all day with me…” Nanami says gloomily.

“Forced!? Jesus Nanami, what’s going through that head of yours, anyways!? I went on a date with you because I wanted to go on a date with you!” Nanami looks at her with a confusing and unwarranted amount of surprise.

“Really? You weren’t...annoyed or anything?” Nanami asks quietly.

“God no! I had a lot of fun!” Yuu exclaims.

“...Really?” Nanami asks in disbelief.

“Of course I did! I love spending time with you! Why one earth would I spend so much time with you if I didn’t!?” Yuu yells exasperatedly. Nanami just stares at her for a while, clearly not sure how to respond.

“I...uh...I don’t know. I’m...glad you had fun, then.” Nanami mutters as a small smile finds its way onto her face.

“...Yeah, thanks for taking me out.” Yuu answers quietly. Nanami’s smile widens a bit, but she doesn’t say anything else. They stare out at the rain for a while in silence. Eventually, Yuu feels her legs getting tired and she sits herself down against the tree. After a few more moments, Nanami sheepishly comes over and sits down next to her.

Yuu doesn’t feel herself fall asleep. She does feel it when, a while later, Nanami lightly shakes her awake. Yuu opens her eyes, unsure of where she is for a moment...before quickly pulling her head off of Nanami’s shoulder.

“The rain’s stopped.” Nanami says softly, with an odd hint of something in her voice that Yuu can’t really identify. It sounds like something happy though.

Yuu looks outside the shelter of the tree to see that yes, the rain has indeed stopped. What weird weather. The leftover drops of water sparkle like diamonds in the sun and Yuu finds herself glad that she’s here, so that she can notice how pretty it is.

“Hey,” Nanami says quietly, looking over at her with the same cute, tiny smile on her face. “I suppose you don’t exactly want to go to the theater now...but can I walk you home?”

“...Yeah, ok.” Yuu agrees. And so the two girls start off back down the path again. The cherry blossom trees are all droopy and soaked now, but even that has its own kind of prettiness to it. Nanami takes her hand again. Neither of them say anything as they keep walking.

The world is even more deserted now, from the rain. There’s nobody on the main streets. And so Nanami feels no need to let go of her hand. She spots a flower bush on the side of the road as they approach Yuu’s house, and she pulls Yuu over to it. She plucks a soft purple flower out of the bush.

Yuu expects it to be handed to her...but instead, Nanami put the stem between her teeth and turns to Yuu, posing like a spanish dancer. She grabs Yuu’s hand again and twirls her around. Yuu giggles and then bursts into laughter as Nanami pulls her into a waltz. Nanami grins, the flower still between her teeth as the two of them turn and dance around on the empty open street.

Suddenly, Nanami trips Yuu’s leg out from under her and scoops an arm under her back to hold her in a fancy, cheesy pose. Yuu’s laughter turns into a squeak of surprise when Nanami suddenly uses her other arm to scoop Yuu off the ground bridal style.

“S-stop it!” Yuu says without a hint of seriousness as Nanami starts carrying her down the street. Yuu is laughing so hard that she thinks she might be crying.

Nanami carries her all the way to her front walkway before carefully letting her down. Yuu keeps trying to repress her giggles as Nanami takes the flower out of her mouth and hands it to her with a bow. She fails. She takes the flower anyways. Nanami promptly bursts into a giggling fit as her face turns as red as a tomato. She straightens herself up and starts fiddling with the fabric of her clothes nervously.

Yuu steps up to her, goes on her toes, and gives Nanami a peck on the cheek. She has another giggling fit as Nanami’s face somehow manages to light up even more.

“Thanks for the date...Touko.” Yuu says, waving a quickly running into the house before she can faint from embarrassment. Nanami somehow manages to compose herself enough to wave to her as Yuu turns to close the door.

“Thanks for coming, Yuuchan!” Nanami spurts out suddenly. Yuu shuts the door as she sees Nanami bury her face in her hands in embarrassment. Yuu runs up to her room before anyone can notice how red her face is.

She buries her face in her pillow to stifle her uncontrollable giggles. She called me Yuuchan! That sappy dork! she thinks as she rolls around on her bed back and forth, laughing as she replays the moment over and over again in her head.

“That was so cute!” She laughs as she accidentally rolls onto the floor. She flops out across the floor as she bursts into giggles again. She doesn’t hear her phone buzz. A few minutes later though, after her giggles die down, she opens up her phone and sees the new message. It’s from Maki.

So, how’d your date go?

She giggles again as she tries to think of where she should start in telling Maki about her day.
