A long time ago, in a place unbeknownst to humanity, two very different worlds collided. The Upper World and The Under World; a beautiful and kind angel, and the demon that fell in love with him.
Gifted by god with ethereal beauty and grace, he left the demon enraptured. Before that moment, the demon had only seen ugly sin, and the angel was the holy water that rendered him vulnerable, but cleansed. At that moment, the demon was captivated, a willing slave to the whims of the universe. Thousands of years of treachery, bloodlust, and sin were washed away by purity. He was revitalized, reborn.
The angel was repulsed by the demon, as he embodied all the principles the angel stood against. The demon gazed at him, eyes filled with blind adoration, and the angel reciprocated with no more than a passive glance in his direction, his stoic features masking his inner disgust.
As he approached the angel, the angel took two steps back for every one he took forward. Finally, he was so far away that the demon resorted to calling out to him.
“Oh creature of beauty, of innocence, of purity, may I ask for permission to court you?” He called desperately.
The angel was appalled by the demon’s audacity, however he quickly replied, “You may ask, but I will not give, as you are a creature of sin.”
“Consider me a suitor then.” The demon countered, “I will prove my worth to you.”
The angel scoffed and flew away, blonde hair fluttering in the wind, leaving the demon grinning in his wake.
A fortnight passed. Every day the demon bade his friend the messenger to bring gifts to his love. Flowers, gems, trinkets, and poems, no stone was left unturned in the demon’s quest to woo the angel.
The angel was touched by the thought put into the demon’s gifts. He kept the gifts within his eyesight, and as he received that day’s gift from the grinning messenger, he felt his heart flutter at the demon's words. Slowly, but surely, the demon’s charm and thoughtfulness, traits the angel had previously thought impossible for a creature such as himself, were making him fall more and more in love.
The other angels grew vicious with jealousy, an emotion previously unknown to their race. They resented that their lovely prince was showing affection towards anyone, let alone a sordid demon. They concocted a plan to kill the demon so that he would no longer stain the prince’s thoughts with his presence.
At noon, when the demons were asleep, a group of angels snuck past the guards of the underworld. They found the demon in his cave, sound asleep. Hearing noises, the demon rose wearily. Seeing the angels around him, faces painted with ill intentions, he stood with a start. As he moved into a defensive position, the angels charged.
Although he fought them valiantly, the sheer number of angels overwhelmed him, and he was felled by a holy blade.
The angels left him to bleed out on the floor, and as he dragged himself towards the opening of the cave, the messenger arrived.
Gasping, he rushed to the demon’s side. “My friend, who did this to you?” he whispered, seeing the holy blade and understanding that his friend was beyond help.
“That,” he gasped out, “does not matter,” he swallowed, “please, as my dying request, bring my angel here… I want-”
“Hush, save your strength, I will bring him here.” The messenger left swiftly, his wings beating powerfully as he raced against time. Upon explanation of the events to the angel, he agreed to go to the underworld with the messenger. However, by the time they reached the cave, the demon’s pale grey skin was devoid of life.
“No! You can’t leave yet.” the angel cried, “I still haven’t told you-” his voice broke off into a sob. As he cried, he brought the demon’s ice cold body into his embrace. The demon's blood stained his white clothes red.
A single tear dripped down his face into the demon’s wound, and then, as if by magic, the blade fell to the floor with a clatter and the wound slowly knit itself back together. The demon opened his eyes to the angel’s sobbing form, and he slowly raised a hand to brush a tear off the angel’s cheek.
“You are much too beautiful to cry, my love.” he whispered.
He startled, eyes wide at his grin, before pulling him into an even closer embrace. “I wanted to tell you, that,” he sniffled, “I have fallen for you.”
“May I give you my name?” The demon asked, grin stretching even wider.
“You died for me,” he whispered, “you may give me your name, and I will give you mine, and our souls, though they will never be the same, will be bound.”
“I am called Wang Ziyi."
“And I am called Cai Xukun.”
For the next few days, they spent every waking moment with each other, learning about each other’s habits and cherishing each other's existence. However, their love was as impossible as the meeting of the ocean and the sky, seemingly close, yet unimaginably far. It was doomed from the very beginning. Once their respective lords discovered their affair, they forbade them from seeing each other. The Lord of the Upper World cast the angel into the day sky. Unable to move beyond her space, he wept tears of shining gold. The Devil cast the demon into the depths of the night sky, so that as day changed to night again and again he would forever be chasing his angel. As he wept, his tears reflected those of his lover and shined a soft yellow. However when day and night met, at dawn and at dusk, they could see each other for a few fleeting moments before they were torn apart by the unforgiving forces of nature.
And thus, the sun and moon came to be.
