Work Text:
she was the sun, thought jirou. of everything in this world, here she was, holding hands with a girl so bright that to look at her was to close your eyes so you didn't go blind. all the stars must have aligned so perfectly for a moment like this to ever be possbile, for this to be any more than wishful dreaming. a small kiss to the forehead, and promises hidden in the way momo's finger would rub lightly against jirou's palm.
this was paradise; heaven found its way to bless this ground. the gentle flow of the wind whispered in jirou's ears, telling her sugary sweet things and reminding her that this could be her forever. resting her head on momo's shoulder, she smiled as momo whispered loving phrases over and over again, reminding jirou that this was real. this was every longing moment, every second spent falling in love. this was every smile, every cup of tea. every moment spent being each other's unknowing everything. this was all the little things, and so much more.
far away, jirou heard a bird begin to sing, and lips zipped, she began humming the same gentle tune. it wasn't until a few notes in that she began to pick up on the song.
a soft voice began to sing along as jirou hummed, momo adding on as if the song was a lullaby being sung to a young child.
"you are my sunshine, my only sunshine"
jirou felt mother nature smile upon them as momo held her in her arms, as if to say "i am here now." jirou could feel strength like never before, as if she could fight the entire world with just one look as she held momo's hand. humming along, jirou let momo run her fingers through her hair, careful to not tangle her earjacks. below her, jirou felt the grass press lightly into her legs, reminding her that she was here. this was real.
"you make me happy when skies are gray"
the sky was a pale blue, with nothing but wispy clouds to mark it. an occasional bird would soar through now and then, reminding jirou of how she always had wished to have a flying quirk when she was younger. before her quirk ever developed, she would don wings made of cheap cloth and jump off the playground in the nearby park. her mother was always there to help her up, healing quirk at the ready.
"mommy, why can't i fly yet?" jirou would ask, eyes glossed with tears.
"because dear," her mother would say in her honey-like voice, "you have to wait for your quirk to appear. once it does, then you can do magical things."
"but mommy!" jirou would whine. "i want to fly! like a bird!"
"well, a flying quirk would certainly be the first in our family." letting out a soft laugh, jirou's mother lifted her golden hands from jirou's wound, leaving healed skin in place of pain. "besides, where would you even fly?"
"the clouds!"
"the clouds? jirou, that's quite high, isn't it?"
"mhmm!"
"you'll never know dear, how much i love you
please don't take my sunshine away"
this was better than flying, jirou thought. this was better than everything, because she was with momo, and momo was her everything. this was better than gold, than riches. this was better than cloth wings and plastic playgrounds and golden fingers to ease her pain.
if she could have any quirk in the world, jirou would like something like momo's creation quirk. maybe then she could create enough words to describe the way she felt about momo, the way no lovesick poem could ever capture this beauty. maybe she could create a field of golden roses just to show to momo every day, telling her the day the last metal rose died would be the day she stopped loving her. she would create a world just for them, with everything they ever needed, and everything they could ever want. she would create anything for momo, anything for the girl she so deeply loved.
"i'll always love you and make you happy
if you will only say the same"
as the song drew to a soft end, jirou whispered to momo, "i love you so much."
and momo whispered back-
"i love you more than the sun shines."
