Work Text:
Midoriya’s friends were up to something. It wasn’t that he had stunning detective abilities or anything… but they quite frankly had been tormenting him for the past several weeks, telling him they had a surprise planned. They wouldn’t give anymore details on what or when it was going to be, but Midoriya accepted the fact he’d eventually find out. It wasn’t near his birthday, and he hadn’t done anything particularly notable, so perhaps this was just for the sake of being nice. Or they could be pulling a prank on him. Honestly, their capacity to be sweet was just as high as the likeliness of messing with him.
[ Unknown Number ] Hey! Meet me tomorrow at noon at that coffee shop Roasts and Toasts :D
Maybe Midoriya should’ve suspected it being a wrong number, but his friends had been dropping vague hints all day and he immediately assumed this was part of the surprise. They probably used one of their friend’s phones to text him. It wasn’t until later that he realized he didn’t text back.
[ Unknown Number ] You’re free tomorrow, right? I know you said you were, but I wanted to double check!
[ Izuku ] Yup! I’ve got nothing planned
Even on a secret, it’d be just like Iida to double check. His friends had pestered him for his schedule so they’d know if he was busy or not. That further strayed his thoughts from this being a wrong number.
…
Kirishima was pretty nervous about going on a blind date. The person he had been texting over a dating app seemed like a really nice guy and both of them decided not to exchange selfies. They talked over going on a date after a few weeks of chatting. To make things simpler, he gave Kirishima his number and said to surprise him on the dates location. After thinking for a bit, he texted the number. The pause with no text back worried Kirishima, but soon enough things smoothed over. He was anxious, but also excited to finally meet the man. It'd be nice to finally see his face and learn his real name.
[ Eijirou ] I'll be wearing a Crimson Riot shirt. You like heroes, right?
[ Loaf ] Yeah! All Might is my fave :D
Funny, Kirishima could’ve sworn Loaf had said EraserHead but oh well. His memory wasn’t always the best, and it was very possible he remembered wrong. All his friends were super hero geeks, it wouldn’t be odd if he simply mixed Loaf’s opinions with someone else’s.
Every person that entered the shop could’ve been Loaf, so Kirishima stared at everyone until they were clearly sitting down elsewhere. Fidgeting nervously, he pulled out his phone to look at the texts again. What if wearing a superhero shirt was too casual? Kirishima feared overdressing and setting an awkward mood. Taking a deep breath, he told himself it was all okay. The coffee shop was a casual place, so it was normal to wear casual clothing. Besides, his clothes were nice in the sense that they were stain and hole free.
“U-um, excuse me?”
Kirishima jolted in surprise, phone nearly tumbling out of his hands. “I’m sorry! Was just checking to see when you’d get here.” As he put his phone down on the table, he looked up to see who spoke, praying to god is wasn’t actually just a waiter.
Holy shit.
Loaf had no right to look that cute. One hand played with the edge of his shirt nervously, big green eyes fixated on Kirishima. Messy green curls, freckles speckled across his face, and small smile that still managed to look warm despite his apparent anxiety.
“I’m Kirishima Eijirou.” He was quick to recover, holding out his hand.
“Midoriya Izuku,” Midoriya nodded his head in return, shaking Kirishima’s hand. His hand was soft and Kirishima feared he held on a bit too long. Somehow the anonymity made this easier, now that he knew how cute this guy was, he wished he had dressed up a bit nicer. It wasn’t that Midoriya had dressed up, but still, he wasn’t wearing hero merch.
After a moment of hesitating, Midoriya sat down. He looked almost confused, but Kirishima passed that off on him overreading the man’s expressions and being nervous about meeting up with someone that was still pretty much a stranger.
Panicking, Kirishima started a conversation about work before the silence stretched out too long. It wasn’t the most thrilling thing, but talking about something familiar eased both of them up. Midoriya was a college student who did part-time babysitting to help out a friend when she got overwhelmed. The mental image of Midoriya taking care of small children was an adorable one. Everything about him from his facial expressions to his voice was soft and sweet, leaving Kirishima a little ashamed he was already getting so smitten with someone he barely knew.
What really picked up the conversation was when Kirishima brought up superheroes. Midoriya’s eyes practically sparkled when he spoke, his obvious love for All Might shown with every word.
“But who would win in a fight, Endeavor or All Might?” Kirishima asked.
Without hesitation, Midoriya answered, “All Might.”
“Not even going to consider poor Endeavor?”
Midoriya smiled a bit. “I’ve thought this over a lot. Sure, Endeavor is amazing and all, but All Might is fast, strong, and his willpower to overcome anything outweighs Endeavor.”
“So you’re saying All Might is a Mary Sue?” That last bit was just a teasing joke, but Midoriya looked genuinely offended and launched into a ramble on all the reasons why All Might was a well-rounded and amazing character. It was clear this topic got him heated, but Midoriya still remained respectful as he talked, cutting himself off to let Kirishima speak if he went on too long without stopping.
Midoriya having a debating side was a bit of relief. Thank god this guy wasn’t actually just sweetness and sunshine. Being cute was one thing, but he had seemed so nervous and fragile at first, Kirishima wasn’t sure he’d make it through the date without combusting. Midoriya was simply fun to talk to, so Kirishima was glad he seemed to be over his early shyness.
At one point, Midoriya shrugged off the jacket he was wearing, and Kirishima nearly choked on the food he was eating. Why was the adorable man so muscular? He expected a scrawny body to be hidden underneath his clothes, but he looked like he equally matched Kirishima, and he worked at a gym for a living.
“Problem?”
Kirishima coughed a few times. “No, just thirsty.” He winced at his choice of words, and while Midoriya’s face flushed, he cracked up. Embarrassed, Kirishima looked off to the side and practically downed his glass of water.
“Surprised I have muscle mass?” Midoriya asked, a good-natured smile on his face. It was clear that he was used to people being surprised, which was a relief. Kirishima didn’t want to accidentally offend the guy when things were going so well.
Sheepishly, Kirishima nodded.
“Everyone is.” Midoriya sighed and shook his head like he expected this but was still mildly exasperated. “I wanted to be a hero when I was younger, so I was obsessed with getting as big and strong as All Might. I know I can’t be a superhero, but old habits die hard, I guess.”
“That’s amazing,” Kirishima blurted out. “I didn’t start working out until my second year in high school. I definitely wouldn’t have been motivated to keep up with it at a young age.”
Midoriya laughed and Kirishima heart melted at the sound. “Thank you. I didn’t start really working out until the end of my junior high year, beforehand it was mostly just jogging and push ups.”
“Still,” Kirishima insisted. “I know you said you’re mostly focusing on college, but what’s your dream job?”
“Well, being a hero I guess. Realistically speaking though, I’m unsure. I want to help people, so maybe I can become a nurse or doctor? I still have my whole life to figure things out.” Midoriya shrugged.
“God, I’m still freaking out because I don’t have everything planned out,” Kirishima sighed dramatically. “Wish I could be as calm about it as you.”
He snorted and shook his head. “No way. I freak myself out quite often, I have no idea what I’m doing.”
…
Towards the end of the date, conversation trailed off. Kirishima insisted that he pay for the meal and they were waiting for the waiter to come back. Midoriya honestly had no idea what was going on, but was too nervous to ask. This was a date, right? Was that really the surprise his friends had in store for him? Like, Kirishima seemed like an amazing guy and all, and Midoriya had been complaining about wanting a boyfriend… he just didn’t expect his friends to set him up on a date with someone. After the first couple minutes, everything felt easy, like they’ve been good friends for awhile. Those were Midoriya’s favorite type of friendships, the ones where someone shows up all of a sudden and it’s like they’ve been there forever.
“You know,” Kirishima started to speak, snapping Midoriya from his thoughts, “your love for All Might reminds me of one of my friends, Bakugou. Except he’s a bit more aggressive about it when it comes to differing opinions.”
Bakugou?
“Bakugou Katsuki?” Midoriya asked.
Kirishima’s eyes lit up. “Yeah! You know him?”
“Yeah, we were friends when we were younger.” Midoriya kindly left out the bullying bit, but they’ve gotten past that. There was no need to bring it up to Kirishima. “Haven’t seen him in ages, though.”
Strange. Midoriya assumed Kirishima was a friend of a friend. Maybe he went into this just as clueless as Midoriya did? Well, he did text him first about the date’s location, so maybe he knew a bit beforehand. Honestly, all of this in general was confusing but he feared asking for clarification would make this awkward.
“Awesome! Bakugou’s my best bro, it’s nice that you two know each other.” Kirishima was grinning and Midoriya smiled too. It was infectious. Kirishima had the nicest smile, just looking at him smiling made Midoriya happy. With the scar over his eye and the spikey hair, Midoriya honestly assumed that this guy would have a personality more like Bakugou’s. He seemed like a stereotypical “bad boy.”
They parted ways once the waiter came back, but Midoriya quickly found himself texting Kirishima.
[ Izuku ] I had fun today! I don’t get out much lately due to school.
[ Kirishima ] Same! Maybe we can go out together again?
For a moment, Midoriya didn’t respond, covering his blushing face with one hand. He was still in public, on the bus back home, now wasn’t the time to start squealing over this like a kid who just went on their first date. He’s gone on dates before, but most were awkward and if they got “officially” together, the relationship was rather short lived. Kirishima felt different, though. So once his flaming cheeks toned down, Midoriya eagerly texted Kirishima back.
[ Izuku ] I’d love to! When’s a good time for you?
After that, they kept going out with each other. They managed to worm in time to see each other every other day. This felt like one of those puppy crushes Midoriya got when he was little, where someone was just so amazing to him and he wanted to spend all his time with them, except the feelings were mutual and this was a lot more solid than a flimsy crush. They were bordering on a friendship-dating relationship. While one should always be friends with the person they’re dating, they weren’t doing anything explicitly romantic. All their dates were something Midoriya would do with a friend. On multiple occasions, Midoriya thought they were going to kiss, but both of them would back out due to nerves.
Things were going pretty great… until Midoriya realized he made the biggest mistake of his life.
“You haven’t pestered us about the surprise in awhile,” Uraraka said, looking at her phone instead of her homework. “Did you lose interest?”
“Ha ha, funny,” Midoriya mumbled, attention mostly still drawn to the book in front of him. He honestly couldn’t be less interested in what he was reading, but school work was school work.
“What do you mean?” Uraraka asked. “We do have a surprise in plan, you know. We’re not teasing you just to tease you.”
At that, Midoriya looked up with a frown. “What do you mean? You guys already did your surprise.”
“What, no?” Uraraka shook her head and stared back at Midoriya, equally confused.
“The date with Kirishima..?” Midoriya elaborated.
“Who’s Kirishima?”
Uraraka was a god awful liar. She grew up a good girl with good parents, so she couldn’t lie to save her life. And that was a problem because—
“Oh my god,” Midoriya whispered, horrified. “That was a wrong number text.” Despite being in the middle of a library, he curled in on himself and covered his face.
“Wait,” Uraraka sounded amused, “did you go on a date with someone on accident? ”
Midoriya couldn’t believe this. Why didn’t Kirishima say anything? Did he even know? Well, he did say what he was wearing in the text, so maybe he didn’t know who he was going on a date with and what they looked like. Otherwise he’d have no reason to say what he was wearing if they could recognize each other. Or Kirishima was a clever and really creepy stalker. Which, Midoriya was pretty sure wasn’t the case. At least he hoped. He was gullible, and Kirishima was a rather charming guy. Midoriya’s heard countless real life horror stories of serial killers being charming.
“Izuku, you’re mumbling.”
Midoriya looked up, certain his face was a solid red. “I went on a date with someone on accident.” He ran his hands through his hair. “Oh my god, what do I do now?”
“Call him! Tell him there was a mistake.” Uraraka waved him along. “The longer you wait, the worse!”
Nodding, Midoriya headed out the library door, pulling out his phone.
…
That morning, Kirishima realized he had texted the wrong number. Loaf was furious that Kirishima hadn’t texted him and left him hanging. He waited several weeks before messaging him because he assumed that Kirishima had simply gotten busy. It was hard to explain that he texted the wrong number and then went on a date with the wrong person… repeatedly.
[ Loaf ] If what you’re saying is true, then why didn’t the other guy say anything?
He had a point. Why didn’t Midoriya say anything? Kirishima recalled how he seemed to be almost confused on the first date, but he didn’t think much of it after that. Going off the notion that Midoriya hadn’t been tricking him, and simply got confused over the wrong number text, then why?
The smart thing to do would be to go call Midoriya, but he found himself too nervous. Everything was going so great with Midoriya. The more time Kirishima spent with him, the further he fell. Midoriya was perfect. Well, he seemed to work himself up too easily and stress himself out, and Kirishima also had a near heart attack once when Midoriya ran out into the middle of the road to prevent a car from hitting a fledgling bird. The guy had a reckless streak it seemed, but that was fine. Even with those “flaws,” Kirishima found himself adoring every bit of Midoriya.
Evening was coming around and he still hadn’t called Midoriya to explain the mistake. He was definitely going to tell him, it’d be wrong not to, but he was working up the courage. This wouldn’t change things, right? They didn’t have feelings for each other simply because they went on a date. The feelings were there because they got along.
Kirishima stared at Midoriya’s contact, ready to hit call when an incoming call startled him and his phone went clattering to the floor. Scrambling to pick it up, he didn’t check to see who it was when he answered. “Hello?”
“Hey, Kirishima!” Midoriya’s voice greeted.
“Yo! What’s up?” Kirishima sat back down on his bed, heart pounding. He should tell Midoriya now.
“Well, it’s just—” Midoriya sounded nervous. “I, um. God, anyway, can I see you tonight?”
Kirishima’s brain immediately went down the gutter, but he quickly shook the thoughts from his head. “Is something wrong?” There are plenty of other reasons why Midoriya could want to meet up with him so late tonight.
“No. Yes— I mean, maybe?” Midoriya stumbled over his words. “It doesn’t have to be.”
“Do you want to meet up somewhere or?”
“We can go to the coffee shop? That’s an in between point of our houses.”
“Got it.”
Now Kirishima was nervous. What did Midoriya need to tell him? They weren’t breaking up, right? Midoriya seemed like the type of man to break up in person and not over the phone. Things were going so well, so that couldn’t be it, right? Was he making Midoriya uncomfortable by being too touchy? Kirishima was an affectionate guy, but tried to remain aware of people’s comfort zones. Surely that couldn’t be it then. Maybe—
Stop freaking yourself out, Kirishima scolded himself, shoving his hands into his hoodie pocket. Midoriya could just be really stressed out about something and needs someone to talk to. Worrying about it won’t do me any good.
Midoriya was thankfully already at the coffee shop when Kirishima arrived.
“So, what’s wrong?” Kirishima asked immediately as he sat down.
“U-um,” Midoriya looked as nervous as he sounded. “So, today I realized that when you texted me, it was probably for someone else.” He glanced at Kirishima’s face. “My friends said they were planning a surprise for me, so I thought they set me up on a date.”
Oh.
Well, that explained all of Kirishima's confusion on the matter.
Sighing in relief, Kirishima buried his face in his hands, elbows propped up on the table.
“Kirishima?”
“Sorry, just needed a moment.” He looked up at Midoriya with a sheepish smile. “I got a text this morning. The guy I was supposed to go out with was pretty upset with me. You two have very similar phone numbers, by the way.”
Midoriya let out a nervous laugh. “God I’m so sorry, I should’ve asked for clarification.”
They fell silent for a moment.
“So…” Midoriya started to say, “we’re still dating right?” His face flushed. “It’s just, well, I’ve really loved going on all these dates with you and you’re a really amazing guy, and I know it was a mistake and all, but I really hope that we can still go out. But, um! No pressure! If you were serious about the other guy, I understand!”
As Midoriya babbled, Kirishima had to resist the urge to kiss the idiot. “Midoriya.”
“Yeah?”
“You free tomorrow for lunch? You have a break between your classes then, right?”
Midoriya looked speechless for a moment before his face melted into a smile. “Yeah. Where to?”
They chatted a bit longer before realizing that they really needed to get home. It was late and they had either work or school in the morning. As they stood up, Kirishima took his shot with a kiss. Midoriya jolted his head back in surprise before sputtering out an apology and initiating another kiss. It was messy, mostly because Kirishima couldn’t stop laughing, but it was perfect regardless. There were more dates in the future to work on kissing.
