8:00 PM

“We look stupid.”

“We look great!”

Bakugou stared at the back of Mina’s head, contemplating friendricide, while she rifled through the piles and piles of cloth and accessories at her feet.

“If we’re the only ones that show up like this, I swear -"

“We won't be! I made Kirishima and Midoriya promise they’d dress up too.”

Bakugou grunted, unimpressed, “That doesn’t make me feel better, freak.”

“Love you too, Katsu,” Mina made a kissy face and narrowly avoided the blast that followed, “don’t fuck up my room please!”

Bakugou scoffed, his storming out of the room made less threatening by the jingle of his spurs.

--

8:35 PM

“Howdy!”

“Aww, Kirishima, you look so cute,” Mina cooed, “So manly!”

Kirishima beamed, “Thanks! You have no idea how hard it was to find good cowboy clothes around here.”

“We literally found some at the first store we looked at.”

The puzzled look on Kirishima’s face was rivaled only by the blush on Midoriya’s, “Umm, I found mine pretty easily too.”

“DEKU YOU’RE SO CUTE," Mina gushed, smooshing his cheeks between her hands.

Midoriya shoved her hands away quickly, blush bleeding impossibly redder and squeaking, “We should probably go in now, huh.”

Mina shoved Bakugou forward, “Yeah, y’all go on ahead, I need to speak to this here pardner right quick.”

“I literally hate you so much,” Bakugou grumbled, grabbing Kirishima’s arm as he was forced forward. Kirishima followed easily, still confused, as they jingled away.

“Okay, so, operation PopRocks is now officially in motion. Are Iida and Todoroki in place?”

Midoriya nodded, “and Jirou and Kaminari are on standby.”

Mina nodded, pleased, “Well then, this should go pretty smoothly then, huh?”

--

9:30 PM

It did not go smoothly.

First, Jirou was pulled away by an excited Momo, something about it being they’re song and that they just have to dance .

Then, Todoroki got caught up in the pseudo-murder mystery of who broke the old, beat-up All Might figure that watches over them all like a benevolent god.

And then, to top it all off, Iida and Midoriya were yanked away by an enthusiastic and totally-not-drunk Uraraka, who said they needed to make an “Ochawich" on the dance floor.

Leaving just Mina and Kaminari to make all their dreams come true and get Bakugou and Kirishima in the right places at the right times.

--

10:00 PM

Well, getting Bakugou to arrive in the places you wanted him to was certainly easier in theory. The boy was immune to subliminal messages.

Kaminari had been trying to slowly float Bakugou to the other side of the room, where Mina was waiting, watching Kirishima. A very confused, worried Kirishima, who was really not into the girl trying to dance on him.

And neither was Bakugou, apparently.

“Hey, cowbitch, scram.” The girl, who had bright blue hair that was tucked under an unnecessarily large cowboy hat, just stared at him. Bakugou furrowed his brow, “ Now.”

The girl snorted, turning back to her one-sided conversation with Kirishima.

Mina stifled a giggle from off to the side, pleased with how well the girl could act. A beautiful second year student with an overpowered quirk was guaranteed to stir up some jealousy.

Bakugou balked, “I’m talking to you, you -" he reached for her vest-clad shoulder, small sparks popping out of his hand, and Mina frowned. Maybe they didn’t think this through.

Before his hand made contact with her shoulder, he froze, his entire body locking up. The girl turned slowly, cowboy hat pulled low and an unimpressed look on her face.

“If you’re going to attack me, at least try harder than that.”

Kirishima, who was visibly upset now, finally found his words, “Woah, hey, what the hell did you do to him!?”

She shrugged, “Relax, he’s fine. My quirk can completely stop the movement of whoever I choose. But it doesn’t hurt them, just keeps ‘em still.”

“Well….stop that!”

She snorted, backing away from Kirishima, “Since you asked so nicely.” The girl turned on her heels and marched away, letting Bakugou free as she did.

As she passed, Mina scowled and whispered, “You didn’t have to be such an asshole, Tayami.”

Tayami shrugged, “Comes with the quirk.”

--

11:00 PM

This whole night was proving to be very uncooperative. Kaminari and Kirishima somehow managed to calm Bakugou down from belligerent to mostly annoyed, but that didn’t fix the fact th

at it was almost midnight and they were no closer to actually accomplishing the mission.

Well, desperate times call for desperate measures when you’re a pro hero-in-training.

“Uh, hey, guys,” Mina called, leaning forward with a grin on her face, “The fireworks are gonna start soon, and I’ve heard the roof is the best place to watch ‘em.” She shot Kaminari an urgent look.

He squinted, then his eyebrows shot up in understanding, “Yeah! We should, uh, probably head up there! Like, right now!”

“Yes!” Mina shouted, face splitting into an enormous grin, “Let’s go!” She grabbed Kirishima’s hand and dragged him towards the stairs to the roof, while Kaminari coaxed Bakugou forward in the form of gentle shoves from behind.

--

11:15 PM

After successfully fulfilling their duties as cowhands by herding both Kirishima and Bakugou onto the roof, Mina and Kaminari excused themselves to ‘get drinks,’ which is code for ‘impromptu secret conspiration.’

“Okay. So. It’s almost midnight? And we’re getting nowhere?” Kaminari anxiously bounced from foot to foot, “What if we can’t pull this off?”

“We will!” Mina said, thrusting her pointer finger in the air, “We won’t fail! This is the Most Important Mission in all of history, after all.”

Kaminari sighed, “Hmm, well, now what? They’re alone on the roof, but that’s about all we have going for us.”

“I have….the perfect plan.”

--

11:30 PM

As it turns out, the plan, like many other things that evening, was not perfect. Not even slightly perfect. It was more on the ‘bullshit your way through this’ side of things. But that’s not the point. The point is, Mina Ashido was now climbing the stairs to the door to the roof carrying a very large speaker, her comically large cowboy hat falling onto her face, and Kaminari was no help.

“I swear, it’s like you want this to fail.”

Kaminari paused a moment, then said, “It’d be a little funny.”

“No! Not funny! A disaster! Catastrophic!” Mina huffed, continuing her slow ascent.

“It’d be a little funny,” Kaminari muttered, following behind Mina, “Besides, I’m the one who came up with this idea, anyway.”

Mina groaned as she reached the top of the stairs, setting the speaker down gently, “You’re not, but believe what you want, I guess. Now, remember, we have to shut and lock the door before they realize what’s happening, okay? This doesn’t work if they can just leave whenever they want.”

“Psh,” Kaminari scoffed, “I think I can handle something this simple.”

Mina just fixed him with a Look, and he shrugged.

“Okay, on three. Ready? One...Two…”

--

11:34 PM

A loud scraping sound followed by a door slamming shut caught the attention of the only two people currently on the roof, Katsuki Bakugou and Eijirou Kirishima.

“The fuck was that?” Bakugou scrunched his face up as he turned towards the noise and leaned against the railing now behind him.

“Looks like...a speaker?” Kirishima answered, squinting, “But I don’t know where it came from.”

“Downstairs.”

“Well, obviously, but why’s it up here?”

Suddenly, the speaker crackled to life, and a cheerful and familiar voice filtered through. “Hi Kiri! Hi Bakugou! It’s me, Mina!”

Bakugou scoffed, “We can tell, you sound like a chipmunk.”

“You’re probably wondering what’s going on, huh?”

Kirishima nodded enthusiastically.

“Well...too bad! We ain’t tellin’!”

Kirishima looked visibly disappointed.

“I just wanted to let you know that this is now your own private roof! Isn’t that exciting!”

“No, it’s not,” Bakugou growled, “I’m leaving.” He stalked towards the door and yanked on the handle, but it wouldn’t budge.

“See, we thought you’d say that. So, as a precaution, we locked the door!”

“What the hell? Open it!” Bakugou gave the handle a few more hard yanks, then shoved himself back, growling in frustration.

“Nope! You guys are up here until after midnight. Enjoy the tunes courtesy of dj Kami-mami and watch the fireworks. Bye bye!” And with that, the staticy voice of Mina faded out, and the soft beats of the best love song playlist Kaminari could find floated through the air.

--

11:50 PM

Kirishima sighed, but remained positive, “Hey, at least we get to see the fireworks, right?”

Bakugou grunted, sulking against the roof’s railing. He kept his eyes down, staring intently at the dark street below.

“Uhm…” Kirishima paused when he felt his pocket vibrate and pulled out his phone.

Ask him to dance ;P - MiMi the Fool

Kirishima froze, immediately shoving his phone back into his pocket.

“At least the music’s not terrible,” Bakugou muttered, “And I had to choose anyone to be stuck with, it’d be you, I guess.”

The blush that roared across Kirishima’s face rivaled the color of his hair, and he stammered out, “Uh, yeah! You too! I mean, I’d choose you, too.” He coughed awkwardly.

Bakugou huffed a laugh, throwing a lopsided smile Kirishima’s way.

Kirishima’s heart thumped painfully in his chest, clenching in such a strong affection he felt it might drown him. He had to make a decision. To dance, or not to dance?

“Hey, Ka...” He trailed off, losing his nerve.

Too late, Bakugou had noticed, “Yeah?”

Kirishima cleared his throat, now or never. “Um, I...Uh…”

“Spit it out already, jeez, what’s got you so nervous all of a sudden.”

“Mmmm,” Kirishima bounced nervously. Just ask him to dance , Kirishima thought to himself, it’s not that hard. It’s actually super easy, really, you just-

He kissed him.

On the mouth.

One minute he was having a borderline mental break trying to convince himself it wasn’t a big deal to possibly risk his relationship with his best friend and consequently ruin his life forever and always, and the next he was leaning forward and pressing his lips to Bakugou’s.

And Bakugou kissed him back.

Gently, so gently je had a hard time believing it was actually Bakugou doing it, Bakugou tilted his head to the right and molded their lips together. He brought his hand up to cradle Kirishima’s cheek, rubbing his thumb across soft skin and hard bone.

And Kirishima responded in kind, clasping one hand softly to the back of Bakugou’s neck and resting the other on his chest. He moved in tandem to Bakugou, their lips leading a dance through emotions too complicated to deal with for now.

When they pulled back, finally, Bakugou didn’t let go of his face. He kept him there, pressing their foreheads together, eyes closed. “Took ya long enough,” He said, his soft smile actually reaching his eyes and he looked so calm and relaxed, so unlike how he usually is that Kirishima had to fight back tears.

“I’ve been waiting on that for...I don’t know. Forever, maybe,” Bakugou whispered, pulling Kirishima even closer, “Wanted to see how long it’d take you. Was just about to lose patience, too.”

Kirishima laughed, “Guess it’s good I did it now then, huh?”

Bakugou’s smile grew wider, “Yeah. It is.” He brushed their lips together again, just barely touching.

Kirishima sighed, happily, “Well, this makes what I was actually trying to do so much easier.”

Bakugou hummed inquisitively, eyes closed. His hands had moved down to Kirishima’s sides, and he stroked slowly, lazily.

“Hmm, wanna dance?”

Bakugou snorted, opening his eyes, “That’s what you were so nervous about? Wimp.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“Fuckin’, of course I’ll dance with you, nerd. But only if the song isn’t, y’know, lame.”

Fortunately for them, the next song that came on was slow and peaceful, fitting into the moment perfectly. Almost like it was planned.

Bakugou moved his hands to Kirishima’s waist while Kirishima moved his hands to Bakugou’s shoulders. They stayed close, pressed together, and swayed gently to the rhythm. Bakugou was, honestly, not paying attention to anything but Kirishima. The way he looked, the way he felt, sounded, smelled, everything, he wanted to burn into his mind. He wanted to remember this night.

Kirishima smiled, keeping his forehead pressed to Bakugou’s.

4

Bakugou gripped Kirishima’s hips just a bit tighter.

Kirishima leaned forward once again.

Bakugou sighed, closing his eyes. He hadn’t felt this good in a long time.

1

Fireworks exploded in the sky, illuminating the boys and their embrace. Bakugou was bolder this time, spurred on by Kirishima’s receptiveness, and knocked the ridiculous cowboy hat off his head so he could twist his fingers into Kirishima’s hair. Their kiss was harder, more intense, but just as sweet, just as filled with caring and adoration and as much love as drunk teenage boys can handle.

Kirishima pulled away first, Bakugou chasing his mouth back, and sighed out, “Happy New Year, Katsuki.”

Bakugou smiled, “Yeah, Happy New Year, Eijirou.”

And then, as they leaned in for yet another kiss, the door to the roof flew open, banging against the wall, and a very excited Mina holding her camera up burst into the scene.

“I knew it! I knew we could make it happen! Operation PopRocks was a success!”

They boys jerked away from each other in surprise. Kirishima was the first to recover, “Operation what now?”

Bakugou shook his head, “Make what happen?”

Mina froze, Bakugou’s stone cold expression stopping her in her track, “Getting...you two...together? It’s been sorta obvious to, like, everyone that you like each other.”

Bakugou nodded, turning towards Mina, “So, you bring us to this stupid cowboy party,”

Mina nods.

“And you bother us all night long,”

Mina nods again, slower.

And lock us on the roof, just to...what?”

“Uhh…Make you happy?”

Bakugou deadpanned at her. Mina gulped.

“I’ll give you a headstart,” Bakugou stated, holding up his hand, “Five seconds.”

“C’mon, Bakugou, it’s not-”

Two.”

Mina spun on her heels and leaped back into the building, passing a very surprised Kaminari, who had actually brought the drinks, on the way.

Bakugou turned to Kirishima. Kirishima smiled at Bakugou. Bakugou grinned.

“Yee haw, mother fucker.”
