Serendipity

Summary:

When Omega Jimin is unable to find his destined Alpha in his own pack, Alphas from near and far come to his pack compete to be Jimin's mate, to prove their worth as an Alpha and win the Omega's love.

Should be simple and easy, right?
Wrong.

Chapter Text

Jimin always knew that his life would turn out this way someday. It was fate, written in the stars, written in the DNA pulsing through his blood stream, through his very being. He was destined to be an Omega even before he was conceived, thanks to his parents’ status, as Pack Omega and Pack Alpha.

It makes sense that the Pack Leaders could only produce Omegas. You would think that birthing only Alpha pups would be better for the pack, but combining the natural power of an Alpha with the genetic powers of a Pack Leader into a pup would only create an unstoppable monster. So of course it could only be Omega pups. The only secondary gender that was weak enough to take on the genetic powers without becoming unstable, creating a beautiful, caring creature as innocent and sweet as a child but as strong as any alpha out there. Empathy and strength. The best traits for the next Pack Leader.

And that was what Jimin was. Son of Pack Omega Kim Seokjin and Pack Alpha Kim Namjoon, he was a perfect mixture of the two. He was perfect in every sense of the word, and his parents and pack couldn’t be more proud of the boy.

But there was something missing in this equation, something creating a void in the young Omega’s heart, eating away at him like a parasite ever since he presented at eighteen winters old, when he woke up to see his eyes change from brown to gold. His parents assured him that it was normal, that it would go away soon, they promised, but it had been four years since then and it had only gotten worse.

Jimin was always a happy child, so bubbly and sweet, revealing his omega nature even as a small child. He always had a sparkle in his eye, an innocent look on his face that could get him out of literally anything, like the time he snuck out at 5 am to watch the sunrise. Everyone loved him. He was the apple of the entire pack’s eye. As he got older and his scent began to change from the milky smell of a pup to one of a maturing teenager, the looks from his peers began to change from looks of adoration to ones heavier with hooded eyes. Jimin didn’t mind though, he revelled in the attention he received. He loved to come home after school to the omega den to see his nest filled with new presents from his classmates, ones that were absolutely soaked in clashing smells of the alphas that had given them to him. The Alphas were always very bold with their gifts, most of them giving him furs that Jimin would sleep with, resulting in the Alphas’ sent seeping into his skin overnight, or jewelry that would hang the scent near his scent glands to ward others away.

They all knew not to touch him, though. The Pack Leaders’ son was not just some wolf they could taint with their hands. Jimin loved to make them all happy by using their gifts, as per his nature to put smiles on his pack members’ faces, but that was all that he wanted. He wasn’t looking for a mate like a lot of his peers were.

Afterall, he was the future Pack Omega.

After Jimin presented, the amount of gifts he received to his room only increased, so much so that they would overflow into the hallway every single day. The happiness he once felt from receiving such gifts began to turn into frustration and annoyance as the void in himself grew. He still wanted to make his pack members happy, he really did, but it began to feel like a chore to use the blankets and wear the jewelry. He did it anyway, and put on smiles for the Alphas that approached him each day, but the sparkle had long left his eyes by then.

He was twenty two winters old now. The alphas in his pack were starting to become more restless, more agitated that Jimin hadn’t chosen any of them yet to become his Alpha. They were constantly pestering him, constantly asking him why he hasn’t chosen anyone, why weren’t they good enough, was something wrong with them, was there a problem, was Jimin okay?

Jimin didn’t even know the answers to those questions himself. Was he okay? He didn’t really know. He was well past the presenting age. It was unheard of for a Pack Omega to wait this long to choose their Pack Alpha. Was something wrong with him?

“Sweetie, nothing is wrong with you,” Jin said softly, picking up a brush from the nightstand and parting his son’s hair with it gently, “I promise.”

“How do you know that? Why don’t I find anyone appealing?” Jimin whined, looking down at the hardwood floors of his bedroom.

Jin sighed, “You have to remember that I was like you, Jiminie. I was also the son of Pack Leaders,” Jin started, but his son cut him off.

“You can’t say that! You aren’t like me. You picked dad when you were nineteen. I’m twenty two!” Jimin protested, sitting up from the chair and looking at Jin incredulously.

“That’s because Joonie’s pack came here for asylum from that war and we met! Jimin, have you ever thought that maybe your alpha isn’t even in this pack? That they are somewhere else?” Jin said, smiling gently at his son and motioning for him to sit back down again.

“What am I supposed to do then? Just keep waiting? I’m so old already, I don’t know how much longer I can wait,” Jimin sighed, looking into Jin’s eyes.

“I’ve been thinking about that,” Jin started, continuing with brushing Jimin’s hair, “What if we invited all Alphas from nearby packs for a festival of sorts? Maybe a contest even?”

Jimin sat up in his seat, feeling his wolf perk up a bit at the thought. “Like...a hunt? A fur presentation maybe?” Jimin offered hopefully.

Jin chuckled. “You just want more furs, don’t you?”

“Maybe…” his son giggled, looking towards his large stack of furs in the corner, blushing when he remembered the last time he used them all...when he nested during his last heat.

“I think that could be a good idea, though. Could be the perfect way to have you smell every single Alpha scent and see if any jump out at you,” Jin replied with a small smile, putting down the brush. Jimin stood up to look at his hair in the mirror, giving Jin a cute thumbs up with his stubby fingers when he saw. His father was always so good at making his hair fluffy.

“Tell me about what it felt like when you smelled dad for the first time?” Jimin asked, sitting on his bed next to Jin.

“Well, it was twenty three years ago, but it felt like just yesterday. I was playing with my friend’s pups outside when all of the sudden, I was hit with the smell of coconuts. Like literally, I felt like someone smacked me in the face with a coconut or something,” Jin chuckled, “I felt like I wasn’t in control of my body anymore as I followed my nose to the source of the scent. I couldn’t even think of anything else. And then I saw Namjoon there, with his pack, talking to my father, and I couldn’t contain myself. I ran as fast as I could and flung myself at him. Luckily he caught me, but we did end up falling. And then making out on the ground right infront of my father. By the way, Jimine, PLEASE don’t do that in front of me when you meet your Alpha!” Jin laughed, interrupting his own story.

“You know I would never!” Jimin squeaked, a blush rising to his face.

“Anyway! Namjoon felt the same way as me. We were drawn to each other like magnets. The scent of him felt like home. He felt like home. And once we claimed each other, it felt like the void inside of me was never even there. I felt like an even better version of myself. Son...sweetie...I know you’ve been feeling awful for a long time now. It’s not fair...but I will help you. You’re going to be so happy when you meet your Alpha, Jiminie. I swear I’m going to make it happen for you. I promise.” Jin said, tearing up a bit, pulling his son into his chest. Jimin sniffled and let his father’s calming Omega pheromones seep into his body.

“Thank you, papa, I love you,” Jimin cried, burying his face into his father’s shirt more, shivering as Jin stroked his back.

“You may be an adult, but you’re still my Jiminie. There, there, pup, it’s okay,” Jin cooed.

And so the word was sent out, spread far and wide, to any pack that could get the message in time. The Kim pack would be holding a competition for the neck of their Omega son, who has been unable to find his Alpha in his own pack, therefore his alpha must be in another pack, just waiting to meet him. All the packs were extremely excited when they received the invitation. It wasn’t everyday that there was an unmated Omega. Omegas were very rare. Unfortunately, the secondary gender was naturally extremely weak, so ones that were not born with the genetic strength from Pack Leader parents would almost always die. So that meant that pretty much every single Omega alive was a Pack Omega, which also meant that almost all of those Omegas were claimed since they were Pack Leaders.

Except for Jimin.

So of course, every pack was buzzing with excitement, hoping that one of their Alphas would be the one chosen by the Pack Omega.

When the time came, Alphas came from every direction, absolutely filling up the Kim pack. They had set up specific areas for the Alphas to set up camp, which of course ended up overflowing. Tents were set up almost everywhere in the territory. Everywhere you looked, there was a tent or an Alpha from a different pack.

Jimin was hoping that he would be able to smell his Alpha the second they arrived in his territory, but he didn’t account for how many damn Alphas would be here. There were so many that their scents made his nose almost useless at picking out a specific smell. It all just smelled like...Alpha...and that’s it. The young Omega groaned in frustration. This was going to be hard. How was he going to know which Alpha was his if he couldn’t even smell him? That was the only way he would be able to tell!

He paced around his den, getting increasingly frustrated by the scents wafting into his window. He slammed it shut with a loud bang and threw himself into his stack of furs. Atleast smelling those familiar scents cleared out the thousands of unfamiliar ones.

Maybe this was a bad idea after all.

Jimin didn’t remember falling asleep, but at some point he was awoken by Jin shaking him awake.

“Hey sweetie, it’s almost time for the first dinner. I need to clean you up, okay? Make you all pretty for the alphas?” Jin said gently. Jimin groaned, pushing his face back into his bed of furs.

His father just chuckled and picked his son up and plopped him down on the chair and got to work making his son look absolutely gorgeous with all sorts of products. He was an expert, since he used makeup on himself so often. Jimin was pretty much asleep the entire time, but it was no big deal to Jin, because at least it was easy to put eyeshadow on a face that didn’t move.

After around forty five minutes, Jin was finished. “Wake up sleepy head, it’s time to go,” Jin said, shaking Jimin a bit.

“Where are we going?” Jimin yawned, his eyes widening when he saw how he looked in the mirror. His dad really went all out.

“To the feast, silly boy. You’re going to be introduced on stage to the Alphas, then we all eat, and then you can come back,” Jin replied with a laugh.

“Do I have to meet any of them today?” Jimin said sleepily, slowly following his father out of the Omega den.

“No, not at all. None of them are even allowed to approach you tonight, don’t worry. This is just a formality, to peak their interest in you, so they have more of a passion to win. They want to know exactly what they are competing for,” Jin said, leading Jimin through the forest, through a pathway away from all of the Alphas, so they could get to the stage without being seen.

Jimin finally fully woke up when they were almost at the stage. His wolf was on edge, pacing back in forth in his head. He asked him what was wrong, but only got a few huffs in reply. It seemed that his wolf was focussing on something, probably desperately trying to pick out the scent of their Alpha.

He was led to the back of the stage to his other father, Namjoon.

“Hi dad,” Jimin said, smiling wide. He hadn’t gotten to seen his father much recently, since he had been so busy hunting.

“Hi Jiminie, are you ready?” Namjoon replied, enveloping his short son into a bear hug. Jimin nodded into his chest and smiled, enjoying his father’s scent. The scents of his parents always felt so calming.

“Okay then. So, all you have to do is come out on stage and stand between me and Jin when I say your name. You don’t have to say anything, just smile at the crowd while we do all of the talking. Then we will lead you to the feast. And don’t worry about being approached, we have a lot of guards tonight.” Namjoon explained. He nodded towards his mate and they both made their way onto the stage. Jimin felt his nerves start to rise as he heard the whoops and hollars of all of the Alphas.

“Good evening Alphas! I am Pack Alpha Kim Namjoon, and this is my mate, Pack Omega Kim Seokjin! As you all know, we have have a son, who is an Omega of course,” Namjoon started. Once he said the last part, the reactions of the crowd became louder and more boisterous.

Jin raised his hand, immediately silencing the entire crowd. Pack Omegas must be respected. “My son is twenty two years old. Unfortunately, his alpha is not in our pack. It has been a long wait for him now, far too long, and that is why we have called this event. Hopefully one of you Alphas is the Alpha that my son has been waiting for all of this time. You all have been waiting as well, for him. So let me present my son, my pride and joy, Pack Omega Kim Jimin!” Jin exclaimed. The entire crowd cheered loudly as Jimin made his way onto the stage, holding his head high even though he felt like he was going to throw up from nerves. He took his place between his parents, flashing the crowd his smile, hands shaking as they grabbed Jin’s hand. Jin looked over at him worriedly, releasing his pheromones to calm his son. Jimin took a few deep breaths, letting the pheromones work their magic, feeling a bit of anxiety leave his system, then began to actually focus on the crowd before him. There were hundreds, if not thousands of Alphas in front of him, all staring at him, jaws dropped and eyes red.

He felt like an injured deer infront of a pack of wolves, ready to be pounced on.

Jin put his hand up once more, silencing the crowd again.

“This is my son, Kim Jimin. I’m sure all of you Alphas are quite pleased with him and are very excited to start,” a flurry of excited growls could be heard, “Tonight, our pack has prepared a feast for you all, to express our gratitude that you all have come to help our son. Tomorrow will be the real deal, though, so don’t drink too much,” the crowd laughed, “Come tomorrow, everyone who is interested in my son will embark on a week long hunt. It won’t be an easy hunt though. You must be in wolf form the entire time. The kill must be done in your wolf form. If you use any weapons, it will be very obvious and you will be disqualified. The goal is to track down the best animal you can find, kill it cleanly, pelt it, and turn it into furs for Jimin. If you do not return in a week with furs, you will be disqualified. After the week is over, you will have a day to rest and recover, and then all furs will be presented to Jimin one by one. There will be no fighting allowed. You may not touch him unless he chooses you. You may not approach him outside of the fur presentation. Jimin can choose whoever he wants, and can keep the furs even if he does not choose the Alpha. Are you all excited?” Jin asked, receiving a roar from the crowd. Jimin felt his anxiety lessen a bit as he heard the rules. He wouldn’t have to see any of the alphas until the fur presentation. No pressure. Nothing. All he had to do was meet them one by one, smell them, and end up with a bunch of new furs and hopefully a mate.

He was so happy that this was modern times where he got to choose a mate.

“Now that the rules presentation is over, let’s feast!” Namjoon exclaimed, the crowd roaring. Guards began to stream onto the stage, surrounding the three of them and leading them to a seperate area, as promised. Jimin let out a breath he didn’t even know he was holding when they sat down.

“How are you feeling, sweetie?” Jin asked, serving up Jimin’s plate.

“I’m...good, actually. Thank you, papa, dad, for setting this up,” Jimin said sheepishly, playing with his fingers.

“Of course, Jiminie, we want you to be happy and safe. This should be easy for you. And meeting them one by one will hopefully make it so you can pick up the scent,” Namjoon cooed, ruffing his son’s hair gently.

“I bet you’re looking forward to all those furs, huh?” Jin teased.

“Aish, shush papa! I just really like furs okay!” Jimin blushed, shoveling food in his mouth to avoid the conversation.

“You’re Alpha won’t really like it, though. All those furs with other Alphas’ scents. I know I wouldn’t like it if Jin had them,” Namjoon laughed.

Jimin pouted. “I’d have to give them up?”

“You’re Alpha would probably just wash and scent them a ton...or maybe even replace all of them with his own furs,” Jin giggled.

“They better let me keep them or replace them all!” Jimin whined, pouting even more. Namjoon pinched his cheek.

“They will, sweetie. You’re going to have them wrapped around your finger with that face,” Namjoon cooed.

Jimin sighed, looking over towards the Alphas, wishing he could tell which one was his already. Stupid nose was so useless. His Alpha could be right in front of him and he couldn’t even tell, wouldn’t even know for a whole week until the fur presentation!

Or so he thought.
