Chapter Text
A warm light bathed Japan in a soft glow, vibrant green trees blowing gently in the wind. It was a wonderful summer afternoon in Japan and everyone was in high spirits, especially the students of UA Academy, the prestigious school for heroes to be. The teens of class 1-A had just finished their English lesson for the day and were relieved for their break in between classes.
One boy, however, remained in his seat and watched as his classmates stretched their legs and chatted with their friends. Tokoyami was never good with conversation, he preferred to stay on the sidelines of social activity and only ever spoke when necessary, but he still enjoyed listening to the idle chatter. Especially when a certain frog girl was involved.
The silent, stoic boy with a raven for a head had an interest for the girl with a frog for a quirk named Asui Tsuyu. After pairing up with her for Hero vs Villain simulation and their final exams, Tokoyami had grown fond of her; unlike him, she always knew what to say and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. His problem was that he didn’t know how to approach her; discussing battle strategies was easy, but talking to her outside of class was easier said than done.
‘What am I thinking?’ The bird boy thought to himself, ‘Asui is an easy person to talk to. This should be no problem.’ Tokoyami rose from his desk at the back of the class and approached the green haired girl, his hands stuffed into his pockets. As he got closer to her, he couldn’t help but feel his heartbeat pick up the pace in his chest.
“Asui.” He spoke over the sound of his own heartbeat in his ears. The girl let out a ‘ribbit’ and turned to look at him, her long tongue poking out between her lips.
“Call me Tsu, Tokoyami.” She cocked her head to the side. The boy blushed and apologized.
“Right, Tsu.” He corrected himself. Suddenly, all the thoughts in his head rushed out of his ears and left him empty handed.
‘Shit, I don’t have anything to talk about!’
“So,” he spoke slowly as he frantically tried to think of something to say, “I’ve, uh, never been the best with English.”
“It’s a difficult language to grasp, so I don’t blame you.” Tsu said and poised a finger under her bottom lip. It was a little habit she did when deep in thought, but it always made Tokoyami blush, he liked the little things about her.
“How Yaoyorozu manages to excel in English and remain top of the class is draining to think about.” He thought aloud; he admired the number one student’s intelligence, but with such titles comes more pressure to be better, so he never strived to become number one himself.
“I’m sure Momo wouldn’t mind tutoring you in English if you asked.” Tsu said.
“Actually, I was hoping-“
Suddenly, the bell for next period began to ring out and everyone began to shuffle towards their seats. Tsu herself gave a small wave to Tokoyami and sat in her assigned desk, while the bird boy stood in shocked silence, eventually swallowing his pride and sitting in his own desk. He crossed his arms and bowed his head with his eyes closed, trying not to reprimand himself too hard. I’m bad at English? Really? Could I have not said anything lamer?
As the poor boy wallowed in pity, two girls across the room stared at the pair in awe. Mina, the pink skinned beauty and the invisible girl Tooru gawked at what had unfolded in front of them.
“No way that didn’t just happen!” Tooru whispered to her best friend, the only visible part of her being her clothes jittered in her seat. Mina clapped her hands together and smiled wide.
“Tokoyami totally has the hots for Tsu,” Mina gushed, “The quiet, goth boy and the outspoken cheerful girl! It’s so romantic!”
“Poor Tokoyami,” Tooru put her hand on Mina’s shoulder and shook her a little, “He doesn’t know how to talk to her. We should help him out after class!” The girl’s gave each other a high five and quietly waited for the last bell of the day to ring.
The sun was low in the sky when school was out for the day. As Tokoyami was about to leave, he felt two figures standing before his desk; he looked up and saw the smiling face of his classmate Mina and the floating clothes of Tooru.
“You like Tsu, don’t you?” Both girls said in unison and leaned closer to him, their hands on his desk.
Oh shit.
Before he could even retort, both the girls squealed and jumped up and down in place, holding each other’s hands. They became very serious and each held a hand onto his shoulder.
“Don’t worry, Tokoyami,” Tooru spoke, “We won’t rest until you properly ask Tsu out.” Mina nodded her head in agreement.
‘Oh God, please no.’ He thought, but it was already too late. The girls had already started dragging him out of the school and towards the student dorms, giggling and brainstorming all the while.
‘I don’t deserve this.’
