Work Text:
Simon and Taka have been companions for as long as Bobby has known them. He used to live with Simon, but after they were sent to prison, he took residence in the courthouse instead, with Bobby popping in regularly to feed him and Taka sitting on Simon’s shoulder during trials. And even a year after Simon was acquitted, Taka is still their companion, living in the apartment Simon shares with Bobby. If you know or spend any time with Simon, you will also become acquainted with Taka.
So it is a normal occurrence in the Blackquill-Fulbright household for Taka to cause utter chaos, and for Simon not to care. Such as when Bobby is trying to make a sandwich when Taka swoops down on him and steals it, leaving him spluttering whilst Simon laughs.
But Simon’s close bond with their hawk means they tend to get very stressed when something appears to be wrong with Taka. And Bobby is left trying to stop Simon freaking out, wondering where his calm, calculating partner has gone.
One day, they are strolling around the park when Taka, who had been soaring around above the treetops, hunting small animals, flies back towards them. But something is wrong; his flight is uneven, one of his wings beating faster than the other, making him lopsided. He flies lower and lower, eventually colliding with Simon’s shoulder. And as Simon’s eyes widen, Taka wobbles and they hold him tightly to stop him falling.
“Taka?” Simon says. “Are you injured?”
“I think he’s broken his wing,” Bobby says.
“I can see that, you fool. I was asking Taka.”
Ignoring that birds can’t talk, Bobby helps them support Taka and says, “Let’s get him to a vet, okay?”
Simon frowns, but he knows they’re calming down. “Very well, Fool Bright.”
