Summary
In 1830, when Ella Merriweather's father dies, leaving her penniless, she accepts a position as a nurse and companion for her landlord's aging father, Mr. Viridian. He treats the girl as a ward, even arranging a Christmas ball so she can have her debut and meet eligible young men. But how can Ella accept suitors, when she is deeply in love with a man she only met once, a man on a black horse with deep green eyes?
In Thornwood Hall, the Viridian family mansion in the Cotswolds, Ella finds a secret room full of books and instruments of a sexual nature that help spur her sexual awakening. Meanwhile, Loki, in the guise of the mortal Mr. Viridian, is falling in love with her, but he believes she is too pure and good for him, so he tries to stop himself from seducing her. Each of them longs for the other, without either of them knowing it.
