Work Text:

It was a typical morning like any other.

He had breakfast with Yuu, enjoying the soft texture of the pancake as it filled his mouth with its sweet flavor—God, he had really missed the pleasure that was eating solid food—and occasionally drinking his mug of coffee. They talked about their scheduled dinner with Shinoa and the rest. Mika had to remind himself that he had to go to the grocery store and get the ingredients to bake a cake for Yoichi’s approaching birthday. Everything was going smoothly for once, to Mika's pleasure.

That is, until he accidentally cut his finger while washing the dishes.

Everything was a blur after that. The moment Mika let out a little gasp of surprise at the slight stinging sensation and the view of little drops of blood on the plate, the only warning he got was the sound of a chair falling to the floor before he was lifted into Yuu's arms and taken to their car in quick motion.

“Yuu-chan, wait!” he complained after regaining a sense of his surroundings. “Where are you taking me!?”

Yuu made a quick job to open their garage and drive his car out of their home. His expression was determined and slightly desperate, making Mika worry about his sanity. It was only after they were two blocks away from their home that he regarded Mika with a concerned look. “It's okay, Mika, it's gonna be alright! I'm talking you to the hospital!”

“The hospital!? Yuu-chan, what—”

“Don’t worry, we'll be there in a second. It was a good choice to rent that house in the middle of the city.”

“Hey, listen!”

“Are you okay? Aren’t you dizzy? Can you tell me how many fingers I'm holding up?” He raised his hand in front of Mika's face with three fingers up and Mika batted his hand away in exasperation.

“Yuu-chan. It's. Just. A. Cut. I can't die from this!”

His partner paid him no mind and pulled on the driveway. Once the car stopped moving, Yuu immediately got out and opened Mika's door, ready to carry him again.

Mika refused to get up, however, but Yuu was having none of it so he promptly brought him into his arms again despite the resistance.  “W-wait! Listen!” Mika demanded, growing red at the strange looks they were receiving for his struggles against Yuu's hold. “Yuu-chan, i-it's just a cut! It's nothing serious!”

“You say that because you're used to your fast healing! You don't know how dangerous it might be for a human!”

“You're used to your fast healing too, idiot! A cut it's not that serious! Do you think I'd forget what a dangerous injury would feel like!?”

“The other day you tripped and said it was nothing serious but now there's a purple spot on your knee!”

“That's just a minor bruise!”

“See what I mean?!”

Mika groaned but stopped arguing to cease calling the attention of the prying eyes of the rest of patients and the hospital crew itself. It was deeply embarrassing to realize they were making such a scene in a public place but, as expected, Yuu didn't seem to even notice the stares as he carried Mika like he was in a deadly state.

He wished he could bury himself underground.

——

The way back home was silent.

After Yuu desperately demanded to see Mika's doctor—promptly calling the whole hospital staff’s attention for the second time since they arrived—they were welcomed to her office. The woman, who was also in charge of Mika during his internalization once he turned into a human again, patiently listened to Yuu's explanation of the situation with a soft smile on her face.

Mika raised his free hand to conceal the blush covering his cheeks as much as possible as Yuu lifted his injured finger for the doctor to inspect. Without giving out any indication that she was amused by the ridiculously small issue, she opened a first aid kit she took from a drawer of her desk and put on a band-aid on the small cut. Yuu asked what else could they do to help his recovery—by now Mika’s head was buried under his arms—and the doctor, in a slightly comical tone, said he should be fine after a good rest.

Mika didn't utter a single word during the whole trip back home. There was nothing to be said. The bewilderment he was feeling couldn't be described with words spoken in any language.

Yuu, on the other hand, seemed rather pleased with himself. Mika wanted to be angry at him for all the ridiculously unnecessary consternation he caused him in the span of two hours, but the content smile he wore as he drove them back home dissipated all of his negative feelings. It wasn't fair!

He seemed to notice Mika's stare because a hand let go of the steering wheel to hold his knee in a gentle squeeze of reassurance.

Yuu was going to be the death of him.

——

That is, if Yuu ever allows any harm to reach Mika's life.

Mika wanted to think it was endearing. It kind of was, really. Yuu put so much effort into keeping him safe it made his heart swell in happiness. Before Yuu, he was never taken care of by anyone; not even his parents—rather, his parents did the exact opposite—. He was never cared for so fondly and with so much devotion.

But, God , was he obnoxious .

He forced Mika to stay in bed for the rest of the day and the day after, bringing him food and checking up on him every two minutes, aside from the constant cuddling and kisses on the injured finger. If Mika didn't love Yuu to the moon and back he would have thrown the whole plate on his face already, but those shining eyes and sweet smiles always brought his heart to his knees.

Thankfully, once the meager cut was healed, Yuu—reluctantly so—allowed Mika to go back to his usual daily activities. The sole thought of the word “allowed” outrages him, though. How dare Yuu think he can dictate what he is allowed to do or not!? Ever since Mika became a human again, Yuu has become too overprotective for his liking.

Not that he should be surprised, considering what happened when Mika —still a vampire— staggered because his boot was damaged and Yuu tried to take him to a hospital for that simple slip. It was annoying how stubborn Yuu could be when it came to his safety, or in general, really.

Granted, Mika's transition into a human put his health in a dangerous state for weeks, forcing him to be hospitalized until he was deemed stable. It was only a month ago when he was allowed to go home. It was to be expected that Yuu would be so careful. However, his one biggest mistake was letting the doctor speak to Yuu about his vulnerable condition. While the professional meant to tell him they should pay attention to any indication Mika was in deep pain, Yuu took it as a permission to drive Mika to the hospital whenever the slightest scratch graced his skin or the smallest cough left his mouth.

But today he had crossed a line and Mikaela was. Fed. Up.

“Yuu-chan!” Mikaela's voice was stern, unwavering, “Come here right now. We have to talk,” he gravely stated.

“Sure!” was Yuu's answer in his usual cheerful tone. It made Mika's brows twitch in slight confusion, his confidence wavering. Did he not notice his authoritative voice?

The smiling face of his partner arrived to the living room and casually took a seat in front of him as per usual. Mika held his expressionless gaze on him, expecting the little smile to drop in realization, but it never did. Gosh, he wanted to scream and they haven't even started to argue.

“I—”

“Why aren't you wearing the sweater?”

Mikaela narrowed his eyes at him and Yuu simply scratched his neck in confusion. “I shouldn't have to wear a sweater in summer, Yuu-chan.” Deep breaths, Mikaela, deep breaths .

“Uh-huh!” Yuu crossed his arms reproachfully, “remember what happened this morning?”

“I-it was”—he cursed his own stammering under his breath—“it was the dust that made me cough! I did not catch a cold!”

“How can you know? What if your body is still not used to feeling cold?”

“You can't make me wear a sweater in summer, Yuu-chan!”

“Wanna find out?” The dangerous glint in Yuu's playful eyes made him gulp.

“No more tickling...please…”

“Then do as I say, or else~” he wiggled his fingers in Mika's direction to mimic what he was going to do, wearing that stupid little mischievous smirk on his face.

“Yuu-chan,” an exasperated sigh escaped his mouth, “this is what I wanted to talk about. You're out of control!”

Yuu giggled. Mika wanted to punch that charming smile off his face. “It's just a sweater, Mika. It won't kill you. A cold, however…”

“I did not catch a cold!”

“Why don't we go to the hospital and find out? We can't take any chances, Mika.”

“Just”—a groan—“stop overprotecting me! I will not die!” he raised his voice.

Yuu’s previous calm expression  morphed into a more concerned frown. “How do you know?”

“Because one cough o-or a scratch are not that serious!”

“Mika—”

“Just because I’m a human now doesn’t mean I’m made of crystal!” He yelled, slamming his fist on the armrest, but as soon as he opened his eyes and saw Yuu’s hurt expression he regretted his actions completely. Lowering his gaze to his lap, he prepared to apologize. “Yuu-”

“I don’t want to lose you, Mika.”

Mika upcasted his eyes to watch Yuu’s bittersweet expression. His eyes held the slightest hint of tears threatening to appear and he wore a small apologetic smile. Yuu suddenly stood up and resorted to sit next to him this time, taking his right hand in both of his.

“I had to bear living without you for four years and it was a nightmare. I don’t want to ever go through that again.” Mika gasped when Yuu brought his hand to his lips and kissed his knuckles. “It’s hard not to fear anything that happens to you will take you away from me when not noticing you were hiding your pain from me back when we were kids ended up the way it did.”

Yuu rendered him speechless. Mika didn’t consider Yuu could be still blaming himself for his dumb plan’s terrible outcome. He felt a pang of guilt for underestimating the degree of the aftereffect his mistake had on his family.

“Yuu-chan, I’m sorry. I don’t hide things from you, anymore, okay? I would never hide my pain from you again. Not after everything that’s happened to us.”

“Like when you starved yourself for days and pretended everything was okay?” Yuu asked with a little knowing smile.

“I— Uuh” he couldn’t hold Yuu’s gaze when he got him right where he wanted him. “Yuu-chan—”

“Sweater. Now.”

——

I can’t believe my life , he thought, as he walked outside in the middle of August with a goddamn sweater and scarf on.
