I Just Haven't Met You Yet

Summary:

soulmate au where Seokjin is adamant on finding his soulmate.

Notes:

the title and the backbone of the plot was inspired by Michael Buble's song Haven't Met You Yet! this was supposed to be a songfic, and it works as a songfic, but in the end I decided to remove the lyrics :")

just to clarify, this soulmate au where you see colour after you make eye contact with your soulmate for the first time. just touching them or seeing any other part of them won't work, you have to look into their eyes and vice versa.

enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Kim Seokjin was a simple man. All he wanted, very truthfully, was love. In this world where your significant other was decided right when you were born, where you live your life knowing that they are out there, waiting for you, Seokjin couldn’t wait for that one day his turn comes. His turn to see colour.

You never know, maybe the reason why Seokjin was so adamant on finding his soulmate was because his life was all laid out perfectly for him. He’s a young man, a college freshman in fact. He had good friends who he would never trade for the world, he managed to get into the college he was striving for with flying colours. His family was doing well and he didn’t have any financial issues. And of course, his face and voice. His flawless face, and his voice which would be able to belt out strings of beautiful sound. Needless to say, almost every girl (and boy) in both his level and the level above his were head over heels for him. This boy, however, only bothered about what he considered to be true love. Of course he liked the feeling of having countless people swoon over him at every move he makes, but he wanted to dedicate his love to that one special person. He also didn’t want to be selfish, he didn’t want to waste other people’s time dating him when they could be searching for their own love.

Another reason why Seokjin is so persistent on finding his soulmate may be because his two best friends have found their own soulmates, namely each other. Seeing the two of them enjoy each other’s presence had always made him slightly jealous. Nothing that he couldn’t handle though, just the ever so strong desire to find his soulmate increasing. Many a time, he would find himself at the edge of his roommate’s bed, questioning him about love.

“Namjoon-ah, why do you think it’s taking me so long to find my soulmate?” Seokjin would ask him frequently.

“Hyung, please, I’ve already told you I’m not sure. It’s fine though, it’s not your fault and it’s not your soulmate’s either. Hoseok and I were just extremely lucky to find each other so early in life.” Namjoon would state. “It’s ok, hyung! You’ll find them someday, don’t give up! They’re out there, patiently waiting for you, and the least you could do is wait patiently for them too. Don’t give up, your time will come soon!”

Seokjin would always feel the slightest bit more comforted after seeing Namjoon’s dimpled smile.

And of course, the last reason that could account for Seokjin’s determination to find his soulmate would be the haunting possibility that his soulmate could either enter his life way too late in life, or never at all. That happens to some people.

He has heard countless stories about people falling in love with people who aren't their soulmate, and despite their deep affection for one another, one partner eventually leaves after finding their soulmate. That would break Seokjin.

‘Those unfortunate souls,’ he would think to himself when he had those what-is-love-is-love-really-real thoughts at night. Just the thought they he may spend his entire life without knowing who his significant other is, an entire life without colour, that sends shivers up his spine everytime.

Sometimes however, after he decides to finish up his thoughts at night and tucks himself into bed, after he closes his eyes and drifts off to sleep, on lucky days, he would see the back of a man. This man would have a small build, usually wearing a cap with a small tuft of hair sticking out. He would just be there, floating on what looked like mist, his back facing Seokjin. On even luckier days, they would actually be somewhere. It may be a kitchen, Seokjin’s living room, that one cafe Seokjin absolutely adored, anywhere. Everytime Seokjin tried to reach out his hand to touch him, however, he would disappear. The dream would end there. And Seokjin never saw his face.

Just like any other hopeless romantic, Seokjin would always wonder how his soulmate was. Were they nice? How did they look? Did they prefer coffee or tea? How did they like their eggs in the morning? What if they're allergic to eggs? Is that a thing--

And of course, there was the classic ‘Where would I meet them?’ This question was a pressing question. Seokjin used to think about it all the time when he was younger, but as he grew older, he learnt to push it to the back of his mind where he would still question himself quite often, but definitely not as frequent as compared to the old days. When he does think of it though, Seokjin could daydream for days on end. Would it be at a cafe? At school? Would their first meeting be romantic? Seokjin always imagined it being those cheesy rom-coms where their hands touch when picking something up. I mean he was Kim Seokjin, his first meeting with his soulmate had to be romantic, right?

Wrong.

Finals had ended, so naturally there were many students bustling around the city, ready to chill everything out after exams had ended. And Seokjin was no different.

Turns out, when Hoseok said “today” he meant in half an hour. This left Namjoon and Seokjin scrambling out of their apartment. Fortunately, the theatre was a mere 15 minute walk away from their apartment. However, in their hurry to leave, Seokjin being the forgetful person he is, may or may not have forgotten to take his phone. Not wanting to waste Namjoon’s time, and considering the fact they were already halfway to their arranged meeting area, Seokjin insisted Namjoon meet Hoseok at the theatre first while Seokjin rushes back to collect his phone.

In his hurry however, Seokjin bumped into some dude exiting a cafe. He had a cup of uncapped coffee in his hand, and because you know, physics and gravity and crap, the coffee spills onto the man’s shirt. White. Shirt.

“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry!” Seokjin apologises hurriedly, still looking at the stain on the shirt.

“Watch where you’re going why don’t you? Ugh, it’s whatever.” Besides the irritated tone in his voice, the man seems quite unbothered. He picks up his cup from the floor and unties his jacket from around his waist and just turns around and leaves while zipping his jacket up to cover the stain. Seokjin just watches him act with such swiftness, he wonders if the man gets coffee spilt on him on a daily basis.

Right before Seokjin turns around to continue rushing towards his apartment, Seokjin catches a glimpse of a familiar tuft of hair sticking out from a cap.

-----------------

Yoongi wasn’t having the best day. He’s quite sure he screwed up his biology paper, his friend pretty much forces him to watch a movie with him and two other strangers, and right before the movie, some guy bumps into him, causing him to spill coffee on himself. Again. For the second time that week. As he walks away from the man, his body turns around despite him having no reason to, and his eyes fixate onto the the man who was dashing away in a rush.

Hm. Familiar.

Yoongi, being the oblivious person he is, pays it no mind and continues to head towards the movie theatre to meet Hoseok.

-----------------

Seokjin miraculously reaches the movie theatre 5 whole minutes before the movie starts. Maybe he should quit the theatre club and join the track team instead. Seokjin chuckles at the thought. No way he’ll be able to keep up.

Seokjin finds Hoseok and Namjoon standing around a table with popcorn and drinks all bought. Next to Hoseok is… the coffee dude. Well shit.

Namjoon is the first to spot Seokjin and he must have informed Hoseok because the other two turn around to face Seokjin as well. Coffee Dude has a scowl on his face when he first registers that it’s That Guy, but the moment they make eye contact, his scowl disappears instantly.

Colours. That’s all he can register. That’s all the two of them register.

Is this the blue of the sky everyone talks about? The yellow of the sun? The green of nature?

Seokjin’s legs bring him towards the other three, but instead of answering Hoseok’s “Hey dude!”, Seokjin maintains eye contact with Coffee Dude.

“Do you see them too?” Seokjin asks in a low whisper. A whisper meant for just him and Coffee Dude, no one else.

And in a whisper as soft as Seokjin’s, Coffee Dude answers.

“Yes.”

Seokjin sweeps Coffee Dude into a tight hug, and (not so) surprisingly, Coffee Dude returns the motion. His arms wrap around Seokjin’s neck. They take in each other’s warmth, each other’s touch for the first time. The hug doesn’t last long, and they seperate quickly. Seokjin retracts, eyes glassy with emotions.

“You have no idea how long I’ve waited for this moment.” Seokjin states, voice not as stable as he hoped it would be.

“That wasn’t the most ideal first meeting huh?” Coffee Dude teases, and Seokjin gives him a light punch on the shoulder.

“Let’s start anew then. My name is Kim Seokjin, and I’m sorry about your shirt.”

“My name is Min Yoongi. I’ll forgive you on account that you’re my soulmate, Seokjin.” Seokjin loves the way the way his name and the word “soulmate” sound coming from Yoongi. Yoongi gives him the cutest, most genuine gummy smile he’s ever seen, and Seokjin feels himself falling in love.

(They later find their tickets placed underneath Yoongi’s phone, with a text from Hoseok that read, “Namjoon and I went in first. :3 P.S Congrats, you two lovebirds.”

-----------------

Call it cheesy, call it sappy, but this is a love story, and Seokjin spends the rest of his life with Yoongi.
