Work Header

for the better (or for the worse)

Summary:

Jungkook is painfully untalkative, or according to his best friend Taehyung, extremely shy and anti-social. He also is really, really too gay to function on most days. He also develops crushes too quickly, and falls hard, but it’s always just been one sided. He thinks that no one will ever notice him, ever, as he’s too quiet, too anti-social, too not-fun.
Yoongi has always noticed Jungkook, even when Jungkook didn’t know it himself.

Notes:

I really love Yoonkook, and their bond with each other, so I decided to make a fic about this. Anyways, enjoy and leave feedback! <3

Chapter Text

Jungkook is tired. He’s been procrastinating over his essay for the last two days, and the deadline just happens to be two days from now. But he can’t bring himself to go research and analyze the random piece of reading the professor gave him, so instead he drowns in his video games, ignoring his best friend’s attempts to get him out of his dorm. Knowing his best friend, Taehyung is going to burst into his dorm room and drag him out any time now. Jungkook couldn’t care less if he didn’t finish the assignment, even though he’s already been warned that he may have to take the course again if he keeps forgetting to do his work.

A loud crash, and the door slams open, revealing a tall guy, with floppy brown hair that looks like it had just been washed. “Jeon Jungkook, you better get your ass out of your crusty room, and stop ignoring my texts. We are going to Seokjin’s house now.” Taehyung was clearly fuming, but Jungkook was too exhausted and sleep deprived to care, as would anyone who stayed up 13 hours to play Overwatch would.

Jungkook grunted, and rolled over onto the floor, and stayed there for a couple seconds before Taehyung walked over and dragged him up into a standing position. Jungkook stood still, then fell back down onto his couch face first. Taehyung groaned, and promptly smacked Jungkook’s ass.

“Hey! That’s private property!” exclaimed Jungkook as he turned around to face Tae.

“Well, if you don’t hurry your ass up, I’m gonna drag you kicking and screaming in your Ironman pajamas to hyung’s apartment, no matter how embarrassing. I’m being merciful, and I’m giving you time to clean up your act before we head over,” huffed Taehyung exasperatedly.

Jungkook, being the good friend, dragged himself up, and went to change into something that had at least been washed the last time he went to wash his clothes. When he came out of his closet, Taehyung gave him the stink eye, but he ignored it to go brush hair into a decent matter, and brush his teeth. After 10 minutes or so, he was ready to go with an impatient Taehyung.

“Come on! Jin’s already got the takeout Kook! We have to run before it gets cold, and you’re know I hate cold takeout,” complained Taehyung.

“Yeah, yeah, you know you’re a little bitch sometimes right?” shot back Jungkook.

Taehyung ignored the comment, and suddenly rushed out of the building. Once Jungkook caught up to him, he shouted back, “Last one there buys coffee for a week!” Now Jungkook was alert. He was broke enough as it is being a college student, so he picked up his speed and ran.

~~~
Jungkook beat Taehyung on the fuel of a pack of instant ramen he ate at least 15 hours ago and 4 hours of sleep. Taehyung was pissed.
“You know by now I’d think you would have stopped betting against me in the physical department right?” said Jungkook as he smirked at Taehyung smugly, while Taehyung sent him a sour look.
“Well, it’s not my fault you are some meat head that loves to work out all the time when you aren’t playing video games,” grumbled Taehyung. “We gotta go inside anyways Kook.”
“Okay, okay, but don’t you think that I won’t remember this,” answered back Jungkook, still with a smirk on his face.
Taehyung ignored that comment and walked up to ring the doorbell to Seokjin’s apartment. Right after he rang the doorbell, Taehyung turned around and said, “Oh yeah, he invited some other people over this time.” He said it with a smirk, as he knew how Jungkook was around strangers.
One reason that Taehyung has to physically drag Jungkook outside of his dorm room is that he hates meeting new people, and getting dragged into situations that he doesn’t want to be in. Taehyung just enjoys seeing Jungkook’s reactions to this, but he does also enjoy to try to bring Jungkook out of his anti social, or as Jungkook would call it, his ‘shy’ shell.
“WHAT! Why didn’t you mention it earlier? I hate you Tae,” grumbled Jungkook.
“Love you too sweetheart. I don’t know how we became best friends in the first place either,” Taehyung answered smugly before the door opened to his older brother.
Seokjin opened the door with a warm smile, and with the smell of takeout wafting through the door. “Ah, you’re here! We can finally start movie night now! We were waiting for you two.”
“Well, if it weren’t for Jungkook here, we would have gotten here much earlier if he had answered my texts from FIVE HOURS AGO.” Taehyung gave Jungkook a searing look as he said this, but Jungkook held his nose in the air, not willing to back down.
“Ahhh, the two of you are so cute. Come on in already, food’s getting cold,” said Seokjin while looking at the pair endearingly.
Once the two of them entered inside the apartment, Taehyung rushed into the kitchen to get his dinner. Jungkook hung back somewhat, as he was told right before Seokjin opened the door that their would be new people here for the bi-weekly movie nights held in Jin’s apartment. His hunger eventually won over, and he walked over to the kitchen where Tae was.
Taehyung was already conversing with a boy he recognized as the university’s dance team captain when he walked into the cramped space, as there were a couple people milling around the food. He silently, but awkwardly made his way to the counter where the food was set out. It was still warm, thankfully. He grabbed a plate and promptly started piling food onto it, as he wasn’t just about to pass on the opportunity of free food.
Just as he was putting some chow mein onto his plate, Taehyung called him over. Jungkook was hesitant to go to Taehyung, but eventually gave in, as he felt bad about Taehyung practically dragging his ass out of his room earlier.
“Ok, Jungkook meet Hoseok, Hoseok meet Jungkook!” squealed Taehyung. “You guys are both dancers so I figured that you two would get along well!”
“Yeah, um I’m actually the captain of the dance team, so Jungkook and I have brushed shoulders a couple of times throughout the year!” chirped back Hoseok. He was as cheery as he was during dance practice, and that comforted Jungkook that his brightness wasn’t a facade.
“We’ve talked probably a couple times I think,” answered back Jungkook. “I’m not super talkative around people.”
Hoseok laughed good natured-ly and patted Jungkook and the shoulder.
“Well now since we are better acquainted with each other, I’ll be talking to you at club practice more often now! I think the movie’s gonna start by the way.”
Hoseok turned to go walk to the living room, where Jin and more people were sitting around the TV. Jungkook and Taehyung followed Hoseok into the living room, as well as some other people who were lingering in the kitchen. Jin suddenly clapped his hands together and started talking.
“So for the new people, this is a bi-weekly event that happens at the one and only Kim Seokjin’s apartment, movie night! I’ll point at everyone and I’ll say their names at the convenience of our new friends here, because I am a nice person.”
“The one over there is Kim Namjoon,” Jin said as he pointed at a lanky guy, who smiled back at everyone with two dimples in his cheeks.
“This is Jung Hoseok. You may know him as the dance captain.” Hoseok waved back brightly to everyone.
“This is Kim Taehyung, or my little brother.” Taehyung’s rectangular smile made an appearance on his face.
“Park Jimin, also known as the campus sweetheart.” A boy with a sweet face laughed, and covered his mouth.
“Oh stop that Jin, I’m embarrassed now,” whined Jimin cutely.
Jin chuckled and continued on to introduce the rest that hadn’t been given an introduction yet.
“This is Jeon Jungkook, or known as the best friend of my little brother.” Jungkook waved shyly at the group, hoping to come off as a decent person.
“And last but not least, we have Min Yoongi, music producer extraordinaire, or grandpa.” A quiet guy that sat in the armchair in the corner of the room gave a nod to acknowledge Jin’s words. Jungkook turned to look at him and was struck immediately by the boy’s presence. He stood there awkwardly and stared, until the guy looked up at him, and Jungkook glanced away quickly. Taehyung noticed this interaction, and promptly elbowed him.
“I see you have a small crush there sir,” whispered Taehyung into his ear.
Jungkook turned to look at his best friend, and a shit eating grin was plastered on his face. He groaned internally, knowing what was about to come after that grin.
Taehyung opened his mouth, but was interrupted by his brother announcing the movie choices. Taehyung sighed, gave Jungkook a look that said, we’ll talk about this later, and turned to face his older brother.
“So we have Jurassic Park, Black Panther, Love Simon, Iron Man 1, and It. I personally haven’t seen It yet, so I’m gonna place my vote on that,” announced Jin, as he was picking around the selection of movies.
“No no no no no, we absolutely CANNOT watch It. This is a no horror zone here, so I’m saying we watch Black Panther,” answered back Hoseok, with a slightly wild expression on his face.
This slowly escalated into an debate between Hoseok and Jin about why their choice was better. Jungkook slowly tuned out their voices, and stared into space. His line of view slowly drifted onto Yoongi, who was quietly sitting in the corner on his phone. His eyes wouldn’t move from Yoongi, and so he zoned off staring at him. Yoongi didn’t seem to notice that Jungkook was staring at all. Suddenly, and elbow jabbed into his side.
“Hey Kook, what movie you wanna watch?” asked Taehyung.
Jungkook blinked.
“Uhhh, romance movies? Sorry I wasn’t paying attention,” answered back Jungkook.
Taehyung gave him another shit eating grin with a knowing look that Jungkook didn’t get the meaning of, and turned to tell Jin about Jungkook’s choice.
“Ok so we are going to be watching Love Simon, as Jungkookie over here suggested that we watch a romance movie,” called out Seokjin. Everyone turned to look at the genre suggester after Seokjin’s comment.
Jungkook turned red at the stares of so many people, as he wasn’t used to this much attention being on him. He immediately caught the stare of Yoongi, who was looking at him curiously, and with amusement. Jungkook turned even redder at that, and looked away from him.
“Ok before Kook here gets ever redder than he already is, let’s start the movie!” exclaimed Jin with clear excitement in his voice. Jungkook turned ever so more red after that, and clambered to get a good seat. He, of course, sat next to Taehyung.
As the movie started, Taehyung kept giving Jungkook looks that he didn’t quite get the motive of, so he ignored Taehyung until he felt a sharp poke on his shoulder.
“Hey lover boy, I see you’ve been checking out Mr. Grumpy over there. He looks like he’s into you Kookie boy,” whispered Taehyung.
“You’re being loud! Stop it!” whisper shouted Jungkook back to Taehyung. Taehyung chuckled at the expression on his face.
“Oh don’t worry, the sound is turned up loud enough that not everyone will hear this conversation about you and your secret crush we just met 10 minutes ago,” teased Taehyung. He obviously was enjoying teasing his best friend, but Jungkook wasn’t having it.
He instead just ignored Taehyung’s constant teasing, and zoned off into his thoughts. Why do I get crushes so easily, he thought to himself, I don’t even end up dating anyone of them. His thoughts continued to frustrate him, so he decided to focus on the movie instead.
He realized that he had been in his head for so long that the movie was in it’s final scenes. It also happened to be just before the kiss scene of the movie, which everyone aww-ed at when it happened. Jungkook signed in aweas he watched the scene, but also in hope that he would have something like that. As this was all happening, he could feel someone’s eyes on him the entire time, but with him being who he is, he decided not to dwell on the matter. That is, until the movie ended, and he got up and turned around to meet the face of Min Yoongi, the very guy that he had been crushing on for two hours now.
The two of them stared at each other in silence, wondering whether or not they should make the first move or not. Yoongi finally spoke up first after a period of extended silence between them.
“I’m Min Yoongi, nice to meet you,” he said with a low and gravelly voice that Jungkook immediately took to a liking.
“I’m Jeon Jungkook,” answered back Jungkook. He was internally screaming yet he was amazed that he was able to contain himself this well in front of a cute guy.
“So I heard you’re in the same department as me for music production and theory? I TA some of the classes there with Professor Rainer,” answered back Yoongi with a hit of awkwardness in his voice. Jungkook realized suddenly that Yoongi was the TA in the morning classes that he so hated going to, but ended up enjoying because he liked the subject.
“I think you’re the TA in my morning class on Thursday actually. I don’t talk much so you probably haven’t noticed me at all in class,” said Jungkook shyly. Yoongi huffed a laugh, and answered back to him.
“Well I tend to pay attention to people who have real talent, so definitely have noticed you in class.”
Jungkook was surprised by Yoongi’s conformation that he had noticed him in class. He never would have expected this to come for him, let alone his crush be his TA that he would have to see every Thursday and remind him that he is, in fact, too gay to function at 8 o’clock in the morning.
“Hey Yoongi, are we leaving or not? I have an event tomorrow morning that I have to help set up for, so get your lazy butt over here before I leave you here with Seokjin!” shouted Hoseok from the front entrance.
“Well my roommate is going to head off without me if I don’t leave now, so I guess I’ll see you in class Jungkook,” said Yoongi with a small smile.
Jungkook smiled back at Yoongi. With an ominous feeling, he knew this crush would either turn out to be for the better, or for the worse.
