Work Text:
Katsuki Bakugou is not known for his silence. Well, he isn't known for it when it comes to something important, which made today and all the days prior to this one incredibly awkward and out of character for even him.
Not that anyone would be able to call him out for it, since he hadn't ushered a word to anyone.
He glanced over at Midoriya Izuku. His childhood friend. Katsuki had called him Deku for over a decade by now, so of course he stuck to his habits like any Taurus.
How would he approach him without raising any flags to the rest of the class? Well considering everyone was busy chatting in their own groups and Katsuki and Deku had took it upon themselves to study together despite not talking. This would be simple.
Well fuck. This was going to end painfully awkward or questionably well. No time to waste.
"Oi Deku" I uttered in a calmer voice than normal.
~
Izuku had been finishing up the second to last page of the problems they had reviewed earlier. Kaachan, or rather Bakugou Katsuki, his childhood friend decided to speak up after the hour of silence he had expected to continue.
"Oi Deku"
I looked up towards Kaachan shortly after being prompted to answer.
"Uh, Hey Kaachan, did you need something?"
I said clearly with slight curiosity.
Looking at me with a calm gaze he continued.
"How open is your schedule?"
Kaachan asked clearly.
I took a short moment to think about it.
Well I am supposed to be studying with Lida tonight and having lunch with All Might tomorrow, maybe I can squeeze something In before training later this afternoon-
Before I could finish my train of thought, I was stopped.
Katsuki nodded slightly and spoke.
"Do you have time to chat? And why are you still muttering?" His head tilting ever slightly and somehow not looking annoyed.
I snapped out of it. "Right, sure let's chat! Um how about right after class? What's this about anyway?"
I uttered holding back my excitement.
Omg he's talking to me? Ah.
"Just show up"
Kaachan turned his attention away quickly and went back to his phone.
I was about to ask where but my phone grabbed my attention before I could say anything.
"Roof"
The message stated.
Ok well that was the meeting spot I suppose.
~
Fuck I am awful with words. Why did I have to be such an asshole to him.
I mused.
"Izuku" I spoke nonchalantly.
"I haven't addressed you that way in a long time, huh?" I questioned more to myself than him.
He was rather stuck in his own thoughts at the moment.
~
Izuku pondered as he walked up the stairs slowly with Kaachan after class.
Really, I wonder what he wants to talk about. It has been a while since we had a one on one that wasn't strictly about training.
Kaachan opened the door and gestured me to go through.
"Oh there, Kaachan!"
I regretted how awkward that sounded as soon as it slipped out of my mouth.
Kaachan sighed as we walked out on the roof. He turned slightly towards me and tossed something my way.
I caught it.
"It's that drink you like"
Kaachan uttered.
I turned the drink over in my hands to read the familiar label.
"You..." I pause. "Remembered." I take a moment to absorb this tidbit of info.
"Well duh, I knew you first. Anyways I do have something to say. I also have something to ask you first." Katsuki articulated.
He then glanced over into the courtyard where our classmates could be seen still leaving towards the dorms. His eyes however searched for something more distant.
"Why did you forgive me?" He spoke barely above a whisper.
"I was awful. And yet you chose to forgive me. I know I only hit you once, but I never should have in the first place."
Kaachan's face grimaced.
This was not expected at all.
I was probably sporting a very surprised expression.
"After all this time, you're asking me that?"
I barely managed to choke that out.
It was dead silent for over a minute before he answered me.
"Because you could do better" Kaachan vocalised lowly.
"Do...better?"
A quiet range lurking behind my words.
"I've always knew what kind of attitude you had. And we are friends! At least, I thought we were by now.." I trailed off, allowing my hands to form into fists at my side.
I raised my voice more.
"You were always the best! At everything! How dare you say I could do better than you!"
My voice felt hoarse, I was definitely loud.
A very shocked expression dances across Kaachan's face.
"I..." He trails off under his breath, biting his lip but continuing.
"What kind of hero hurts someone?"
He clenches his jaws and looks away quickly.
"I used to think that all a hero needed to do was win. So I had figured you were never going to be one. And that's not true. And I know that after all this time." He barely allowed a second and continued.
"I'm sorry I worked against you, Instead of with you" Kaachan expressed while his hands clenched tightly.
Izuku is stunned by his friends-no. By his crush's behavior.
The ever confident Kaachan, apologizing and opening up to him- it's something that he's dreamed of, but never expected to happen for real.
I took a step towards him and spoke as clearly as I could manage.
"You were a kid. And as awesome as I always believed you were, kids are pretty stupid."
I chuckled.
"It's nice to hear you say that, but I think I already knew. Deep down." I stated.
Kaachan chuckled quietly.
"Yeah I was a jerk. Doesn't mean fate let me have a free pass" he muttered.
I grin even more.
"I've seen how hard you've been working to overcome your past. It's been a long road, but you're nowhere near the same person you were before. Same for me, I hope.
A blush floods my face.
"That's what makes you so cool, Kaachan."
Kaachan smirks.
"Well you are considerably stronger"
He grinned.
"But you still cry a lot."
What a jerk.
"Hey! Do not!" I voiced.
"Do too!" Kaachan chanted back.
Kaachan chuckled again, but as he turned to face me his face melted into a more serious one.
"I did have something to say"
"Oh? There's more?" I jabbed, attempting to keep the mood light.
"Well it's nothing to do with the previous topic. Well not entirely." He spoke keenly.
"I am no good with words, but this has been chewing me up for some time now."
Kaachan paused not hiding his focus on me.
"I can't wait another decade either."
Kaachan turns his body and his attention is now focused on me.
I tilt my head remaining composed but confused at the mood change.
~
Now is not the time to be a chicken shit.
I took a quick breath.
"Look. I have always been around you. Since we were younger. Throughout middle school and now we are less than two weeks away from graduating to being pro hero's."
I bite my lip and let my pride die a bit.
"I want to ask"
I kept my eyes on his.
"Can I remain at your side?"
I want to run. To take that back. But it's out now and Izuku is now staring at me with no expression on his face.
His face forms an questioning expression shortly after the minutes passed and he answered me.
"I thought being the number one hero was what was most important to you. But now you're standing here, asking me that" he pauses briefly in thought.
"Honestly I'm a little bit confused"
Izuku's face definitely looks confused.
Fuck my life.
I turned my eyes away because I can't say something so embarrassing while looking directly at him.
"....that stopped be my number one goal a while ago..."
~
Could it be? No way, this is Kaachan. But maybe?
"Izuku"
Kaachan's eyes were now watching me.
"Kacc- no. Katsuki, I've always been chasing you, hands outstretched. You never wanted to take my hand before, but it will always be open for you..." I hold my hand out cautiously, just like when we were kids.
"Do you even realize how long I have been watching you Deku?
Kaachan's eyes soften and he takes my hand into his slowly.
He squeezes it very gently.
"Hey nerd" Katsuki mutters.
"Wha-" I am interrupted.
"I don't think you quite understand what I am saying to you"
Kaachan's thumb brushes some hair out of my face.
"Unless you are not as oblivious as you seem"
He whispers.
I feel him take a hold of both my hands.
I blush. I am quite hopeful but still unsure.
"Well, maybe you'll need to spell it out for this 'useless Deku' " I let out a small giggle.
Kaachan's face leans closely to my face but stops a breath away.
"I love you Izuku"
He intertwines one of our hands.
My eyes widen with delight, and a grin spreads across my cheeks unconsciously. I lean in so our foreheads now touch.
"Can I ?" Kaachan murmurs. His other hand trailing from my jaw to the base of my neck.
"Katsuki- yes!" I move with fervour and meet him halfway.
Gentle, almost like a ghost, and quite the opposite of it's owner. Katsuki gave a chaste kiss.
Izuku is surprised at the softness, but goes along with it wrapping his free hand over Katsuki's shoulder pulling him closer.
After a minute they part, gasping for air.
Kaachan's eyes are dazed, his face flushed and he looks almost shocked.
"I love you Katsuki. Please stay by my side."
I smile even bigger.
~
I pull him in close and hug him.
"You might need to chase me away. I didn't ever plan on leaving."
Izuku giggles momentarily.
"I've been chasing you long enough. You're the one who's never getting rid of me!"
Izuku squeezes my hand more, resting his head in my shoulder.
I hide my smile in his.
"When did you get taller?" I question jokingly.
I hear his chest rumble with laughter.
"I thought you'd been watching- you just now noticed?" He murmured.
My cheeks heat up.
"I was trying not to stare" I muttered.
~
"Sure, sure. Ka-tsu-ki!"
Loving the feeling of the name on my tongue I whispered it into Katsuki's ear.
He shivered in my embrace.
"Izuku" he growled.
He had an unimpressed frown grace his slightly flushed face.
I decided to mentally file away that reaction away as an experiment for later.
"Don't you have to go now..." Kaachan grumbled.
I snorted.
"As much as I'd love to stay up here in your arms, it is getting kind of cold up here."
"But" I keep my grasp on his hand.
"Huh?" Kaachan is confused.
"Come down with me?" I offer.
Kaachan's face turns a shade pinker.
"F-fine. I hope this building is empty. I don't plan on everyone knowing right away." Kaachan vocalized.
"Hn, if you say so. I mean, you do have a better grade than me, so studying together kind of makes sense..." I trail off
Kaachan looks surprised.
"What about glasses?" Kaachan questions.
"It's Lida, and I doubt he'd suspect anything. He's a little clueless about that kind of thing, as much as he's my friend I got to say." I squeeze Katsuki’s hand.
"And I don't want to leave you alone just yet" I admitted as I turned my head slightly.
"Well let's go, I don't want to get caught on the roof when the janitor comes by" Katsuki said curtly not hiding his excitement well.
I give a big grin.
"Let's go!" I tug him along until we get out of the stairwell. "Thanks Kaachan." Uttered softly.
I peck him on the cheek quickly before dashing ahead.
"Hurry up!"
Kaachan smirks immediately.
"No way you are winning this time"
