bad days and beautiful smiles (rewrite)

Summary:

Grabbing her things, Kara nods as she gets up from her chair. Before she can stop herself, she accidentally lets the word slip out, "Bye, baby."

|

Her smile never fails to life Lena's mood.

Notes:

Just a part two because these two beautiful idiots deserve the world. I have a few more parts to post but tell me if you want a specific scene and I'll see what I can do!

Work Text:

"Hey, Lena."

Peering from behind the door, Kara could tell that Lena wasn't expecting her to drop by her office.

After all, the morning after the night they spent in each others arms was as awkward as it could've been, with neither of them knowing what to say but both sharing equally flushed faces as they ate their breakfast in silence.

Even though Lena had yet to bring it up, Kara could remember loud and clear what she had said in her dreamy haze, still unable to hold eye contact with Lena for more than a few seconds at a time. As much as Kara told herself that it was just a one time thing, she couldn't help but wish it wasn't.

I called her baby. Then told her to stay the night, and then held her while we slept.

The sound of Lena saying her name brought her out of her reverie, cheeks flushing once again when she realised that she had just been standing by the door for a solid minute in silence.

Fiddling with her glasses as she closed the door behind her, she smiled over at Lena while she approached her desk.

"Kara," Lena smiles, "what brings you here?"

She knows that it was fine for her to drop by and visit Lena whenever she wanted (Kara, you know you're always welcome, in fact, I always look forward to your visits), but that didn't mean she wasn't guilty for keeping Lena from her work.

"Well, I uh, may have overheard that you were having a busy day and I just wanted to check on you. To make sure you're doing okay."

”My day hasn't exactly been perfect. I had a meeting earlier with some of the board members that didn't go too smoothly, but I'm managing."

Oh Rao, has she always been this beautiful?

She didn't mean to just stop paying attention and just stare at Lena, but any response she had was thrown out the window the moment Lena sent a smile her way, causing her to smile even wider in return. Like the capacity to think straight (because let's face it, she isn't), disappeared whenever she was around Lena.

"Stop doing that."

She heard me, didn't she? She heard me, I can't believe she heard me. I said that out loud, didn't I?

Her eyes widen at the thought of being caught, looking over at Lena to gauge her reaction.

Seeing that Lena wasn't looking shocked or surprised in any way, she relaxed a little when she realised that no she hadn't just called her best friend beautiful out loud to her.

Clearing her throat, she decides to just ask. “Stop doing what, Lena?"

"You keep smiling at me," Lena explains, raising her eyebrows, "is there something on my face? Is that why you're smiling at me?"

Laughing softly, Kara raises her eyebrows questioningly as she looks at Lena.

"You think I'm smiling because there's something on your face?"

"Exactly." Feeling the mood in the room lighten, they share a smile as they meet each other's eyes.

How you do it, Lena Luthor, I will never know, Kara thinks to herself, biting on her lower lip as she stares at the brunette.

(Unbeknownst to Kara, Lena couldn’t find it in herself to even be remotely annoyed that Kara had zoned out while she was talking. Not when the blue-eyed woman sitting across from her was looking at her like that.)

"Well, I just wanted to check in on you. Now that I've made sure you're not drowning in your work and made you smile, I'll see you later for our movie night?" She asks, tilting to her head to the side as she continues to smile at Lena from across the desk.

"Of course. I'll see you later, darling."

Smiling at the term of endearment that slipped from Lena, she meets her eyes once more as she grabbed her things before getting up. It wasn't the first time Lena had called her darling, and Kara definitely hoped that it wouldn't be the last time.

"Bye, baby."

Waving goodbye when she reached the door, she sent Lena a final smile before heading out to finish her day. After all, they had movie night to look forward to.

It was only until she was standing in the elevator did she realised what she said to Lena. Or rather, what she called Lena.

I just called her baby. I just called Lena, baby, again . Where in the world did that come from?

Shaking her head, she only hoped that Lena didn't notice, or minded that Kara had let the endearment slip again.

It's only when Lena knows that she's alone in her office does she look up, staring at the space that Kara previously occupied was sitting at only moments ago, the familiar blush rising to her cheeks as her mind continues to echo on the word Kara called her only a few nights ago.

Baby .
