Where Taehyung is terrible at Charms and his best friend Hoseok suggests he get tutoring from the Charms prodigy, Min Yoongi.

Work Text:

Taehyung was merely acquaintances with Yoongi, when he started going to all of the Slytherin games. He’d known Yoongi from their study sessions together in the library after Taehyungs fellow Hufflepuff friend had suggested he ask the older for tutoring in Charms. Taehyung agreed skeptically, not sure why Hoseok had suggested him specifically, but he didn’t mind because he’d heard great things about Yoongi from the Charms teacher, Professor Flitwick. Professor Flitwick had always talked about this rather gifted student name Min Yoongi, who was almost, if not better than a girl who’d gone to Hogwarts years ago named Hermione Granger.

Taehyung had wondered what he’d be like. All he knew about Yoongi was that he was a prodigy at Charms, and most other subjects, and that he was a Slytherin. This slightly intimidated Taehyung, as he was a Hufflepuff and many people overlooked Hufflepuffs, saying “they’re too soft.” or, “they’re the weakest house.” and even more terrible things. Taehyung had gotten used to it over the years, but it still bothered him. He tried to join the Quidditch team, but they’d denied him. He was a mediocre flyer at best, and couldn’t swing a bat without missing, see the Golden Snitch, or deflect a Quaffle. He wasn’t surprised when he got denied from the Quidditch team, but Hoseok thought otherwise, saying he was a great flyer and that the Hufflepuff team was just really competitive after so many years of losing to Gryffindor and Slytherin. Taehyung didn’t quite believe his older friend, but he didn’t mind the compliments. It made him feel just a little better.about his terrible Quidditch abilities.

Taehyung made his way through the library, looking for the Slytherin boy, Yoongi, but couldn’t find him anywhere. It was then he realized, he didn’t even know what Yoongi looked like. He went up to the librarian, Madam Pince, and asked her where Yoongi might be in the library. She said he’d be in the History of Magic section. That was his special spot, and where he always could be found if he wasn’t in class or in the Slytherin common room.

“H- hey.” Taehyung said nervously, standing in front of the History of Magic section. “I’m Taehyung.”

“Hey Late. I’m Yoongi.” The older male uttered in an icy tone without even looking up from his book.

“Well, I didn’t know what you looked like so I didn’t know where you were.” Taehyung replied in the same cold, harsh tone as Yoongi. The older male didn’t quite expect such things from a Hufflepuff, but you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, right? Taehyung thought he should think the same way, he didn’t know what was going on in Yoongis life, so he couldn’t judge him for being mean and rude.

“Whatever. Let’s get started. Sit.” Taehyung didn’t like to be talked to as though he were a dog, however if this is how Yoongi communicates he might as well get used to it because they’d be spending a lot of time together. Hoseok had scheduled them to meet twice every other day until Taehyung was ready to take his O.W.L.s, which was 3 months away, and the days were going faster and faster until the date of exams. Taehyung was so nervous and he didn’t know if he’d pass his Charms class, so he asked Hoseok, but Hoseok sucked at Charms too, so he suggested asking Yoongi, and that’s how he got to this point in time.

He didn’t know which was better, failing his Charms exam, or having to deal with moody and short-tempered Yoongi. He wanted to pick the former. But Hoseok insisted that they work together, so Taehyung agreed. He sat down, and pulled out his books from his bag. Yoongi sighed and said, “You really don’t need those.”

“What do you mean?” Taehyung cocked his head to the side, really wondering what Yoongi meant. He couldn’t perform the spell if he didn’t understand the theory, right? “I can’t perform a spell unless i know everything about it.”

“Not true. Casting spells isn’t about theory, or knowing all about the spell, it’s history, it’s after effects, any of that. It’s about feeling the spell, and envisioning yourself casting the spell and having it work perfectly.” Yoongi scoffed and Taehyung was confused as to why. Yoongi confused him a lot it seemed, and Taehyung didn’t like that very much. “Is that what you expected me to say. You’re so gullible and naive. Casting spells isn’t about ‘feeling it’ or whatever. It’s about the spell itself and your ability to know exactly how the spell works and how to cast it. It’s likely you haven’t been casting your spells correctly.”

“Okay, okay.” Taehyung yawned, “So where do we start.”

“At the easiest thing you can think of. Wingardium Leviosa.” Taehyung thought he might have a heart attack. They were seriously going this far back? They learned that in their first year, and Taehyung was sure he probably didn’t even own his first year Charms book anymore.

“Seriously?!” Taehyung exclaimed, earning several “shh!”s. It was a library after all.

“Yes, seriously. How can you expect to get anything done right instead of wrong if you just sit there and do nothing. Magic doesn’t come easy for most people. I had to scratch and crawl my way to the top, but that’s only because I busted my ass for years and years. Are you prepared for that?”

“I… I suppose I have to be.”

“Good enough. Now, let’s begin. Just say the words with a swish and flick.” Yoongi demonstrated with his quill sitting next to his notebook. The quill slowly began to float in midair, and Yoongi raised it to go slightly above their heads. “The thing about this is to keep an eye on your object.” He brought it back down and settled it down on the desk again “Okay now your turn.”

“I… This is embarrassing…”

Yoongi sighed and said, “Listen kid, there’s only one way I’ll be able to teach you based on your learning style, and I have to know what that is to help you.”

“But… I can’t do it…”

"Dude it's literally just swish and flick." Yoongi demonstrated again, and Taehyung felt a little more confident this time.

He said with a small smile, "Okay. I think I get it now."

“Good.”

Taehyung started to get nervous though, and slurred his words and ended up lighting Yoongis pretty jet black hair on fire. Taehyung felt so terrible he didn’t show up to the next tutoring session the next time. He stayed in the common room, feeling horrible and not wanting to go anywhere or even do any homework. All he wanted was to sit in one of the big chairs and curl up into a ball of nothingness.

Hoseok came in through the portrait hole just then, just as Taehyung was getting comfortable in his sulking position. Hoseok stopped in his tracks and sighed softly, with a sad smile on his face. “You know, he doesn’t care that you burnt his hair. He said he wanted to change his hair for a while but couldn’t find the time to.”

“R- really..?” Taehyung said, weakly.

“Yes.” Hoseok sat on the arm of the chair and stroked Taehyungs head gently to calm him down. “It’s okay, TaeTae. It’ll be okay.” Those words alone were enough to make Taehyung happy and calm. That was really all he needed, was Hoseok. But Hoseok was in love with someone else, he could just tell. Maybe Taehyung should get over him, maybe he could use Yoongi as a distraction. Maybe.

Taehyung and Yoongis tutoring lessons went by really slow at first, with Taehyung asking lots and lots of questions and Yoongi giving straight answers, but Taehyung still didn’t understand so he explained it a different way, and after a few tries he’d understand. Once they’d gotten the basics down, it was so much easier to teach Taehyung all the different Charms and their functions. 2 months had passed in a flash, and Yoongi seemed to be a little warmer than he used to be, but maybe that was just Taehyung hoping they’d become friends. He needed more friends than just Hoseok. The older boy hardly had time to deal with Taehyung, since he was always with his new Ravenclaw boyfriend, Kim Namjoon. They’d been dating for about a month and they just couldn’t get enough of each other and it made Taehyung feel so left out when Hoseok would cancel plans to go hang out somewhere with his boyfriend. It made him feel so unwanted and so finally, he confronted Hoseok about it in the common room when no one was there.

“You always ditch me for him… What is it about him that makes him so special?” Taehyung fought back the tears, but Hoseok knew all of Taehyungs tells. Shaking his legs, fiddling with his fingers, staring down at the ground, adjusting his glasses. These were all his telling signs that he was nervous or on the verge of tears.

“TaeTae…” Hoseok started, but Taehyung cut him off.

“Don’t ‘TaeTae’ me! You always choose him! Am I not important?! Do you not-” Taehyung realized what he was going to say, but he stopped dead in his tracks, knowing that would make everything in their relationship awkward and possibly toxic. “I gotta go.” He said, swallowing and wiping away stray tears.

Do you not love me?

Hoseok tried to stop him, but he couldn’t catch the younger male. It was already too late, and people were coming in from the portrait hole, which slowed him down and by the time they’d all moved, Taehyung was gone. Taehyung didn’t know where he was going, but he didn’t care. Anywhere but with Hoseok was fine. Before he knew it, he was standing in front of the entrance to the library. He slowly opened the door, seeing a small light in the distance. He wondered who would be in here after bedtime. Then again, it was only a few minutes past curfew.

He followed the glowing light all the way to the History of Magic section, where he found Yoongi, asleep with a quill in his hand, and papers strewn about everywhere. He was sleeping on his hand, small droplets of drool falling out of his mouth. If Taehyung was going to be honest, Yoongi looked cute like this. Vulnerable even.

He decided not to wake Yoongi and picked out a random book from the shelf, not bothering to read it’s title, and opened it up. He read about half of it until Yoongi woke up all on his own, looking around until his eyes focused in on Taehyung, sitting there reading a book about trolls. His head shot up and he accidentally banged his head against the bookshelf behind him.

“Ow! Fuck…” Yoongi scowled at Taehyung, but the younger simply smiled back at him, and the scowl disappeared from his face suddenly, as though Taehyung was radiating light. Yoongi had never noticed before, but he really liked Taehyungs glasses and the way they framed his face. He’d also never noticed the little curl near the top of Taehyungs hair. Why was it that he’d never seen these things about Taehyung? Why was it that he looked more beautiful tonight than he’d ever had before?

Yoongi tried to brush it off, though. Not wanting to distract himself with such trivial things such as love and relationships. The only person he needed was himself, and he was happy like that. Taehyung closed the book he was reading and used a charm to put it back into the spot it was in. Yoongi was a bit impressed at how much better Taehyung was now than he was 2 months ago.

“You’re cute when you’re asleep.” Taehyung smiled, and Yoongi blushed. He didn’t know why, and he didn’t want to either.

“Shut up.” He said, coldly. Trying to ignore the fact that his face was hot and his heart was beating faster and faster. “What time is it?”

“Way past curfew, I’ll tell you that. We might as well spend the rest of the night down here.” Taehyung chuckled at his own joke, and began pulling chairs in from other desks.

“Taehyung, what the hell are you doing?”

“Bringing in chairs for us to sleep on.”

“I’m not sleeping in here, and especially not with you.” Taehyung froze. Yoongis voice played over and over in his head, just like that.

Especially not with you.

Especially.

Not.

With.

You.

His mind came up with more and more things in Yoongis voice.

I hate you, Taehyung.

Why do you annoy me so much?

Why’re you even here if you’re so stupid?

“But why..?” Taehyung mumbled. Yoongi barely heard him and opened his mouth to speak, but Taehyung began to sob. “Why do you hate me?!

Yoongi was taken aback, he didn’t know that’s what Taehyung had been thinking this whole time. Yoongi saw no choice but to admit that he really didn’t hate Taehyung, and that he considered the younger boy a friend, even though their small talk was limited to a few words due to Yoongis dislike for small talk and inability to be sociable.

He sighed and got up, walking around the desk to Taehyungs side. Taehyung backed away, sligthly, but Yoongi held out a hand to Taehyungs face. Taehyung eased into Yoongis touch, and Yoongi cupped the youngers cheeks in his hands. “I don’t hate you, Taehyung. Whatever you’re telling yourself is a lie. I don’t hate you.”

Taehyung let out a small laugh, and smiled widely at Yoongi. “R- really?”

“Really. I get nervous around you for some reason, and I see things about you I’ve never seen, and I know your tells for when you’re confused or anxious. I know when you’re having a bad day, and when your day has just been okay, and when you’re having a great day. I see these things about you and I honestly don’t know what they mean.”

“Yoongi do you… Do you like me..?”

“I think so, Taehyung. I really think so.”

“Okay.” Taehyung slowly leaned in, closing his eyes. Yoongi did the same and their lips connected. Taehyungs felt like silk to Yoongi, while Yoongis were like sandpaper from biting them all the time, a bad habit he’s had since childhood.

“I really think I like you, Taehyung.”

“I really think I like you too, Yoongi.”

END.
