The constant pitter-patter of the rain resounded in the dark house and the wind gently knocked on the closed windows from time to time, engulfing everything in a cozy mood that made most people look for a cup of hot chocolate and a book to enjoy the weather.
Not Yuu though.
Yuu stayed sitting on the hard wooden floors of his home, legs drawn towards his body and his head lying down on his knees, hugging a teddy bear tightly and inhaling deeply on its fading scent.
Mika’s scent.
Somehow, if Yuu closed his eyes and concentrated hard enough, he could pretend that they were back in their run-down home back in Sanguinem even if the sound of rain was non-existent underground. However, the soft dripping could easily pass for the kids’ peaceful breathing, when they were all alive and basking in the warmth of being with their family despite their horrible environment.
And Yuu could convince himself that he was only waiting for Mika’s arrival in the darkness of the night.
He had only been a kid, but he wasn’t stupid. He knew what Mika was doing, and worried for him. But he also knew that Mika was also very smart, and no matter what, he would be coming home to them, to him, and then Yuu would glare at him in disguised anger while secretly sighing in relief.
Mika would smile sheepishly and tackle Yuu in a hug, and Yuu would pretend to hate it but would hug back, huffing.
Mika always knew what was Yuu thinking, feeling, and Yuu reveled in the affection Mika gave him.
So, for sure, this time Mika would come through the door smiling sheepishly and apologizing to Yuu for worrying about him, before nagging him about staying up so late and not keeping the lights on. Yuu would smile, and would tackle Mika in a tight hug, not minding how wet Mika would be because of the rain and laughing at the way Mika would scold him for getting unnecessarily wet as well.
Oh, how he wished he could see Mika coming back home.
If he had only listened to Mika’s worries, if he had only been content with having his family back, if he had been more suspicious of Guren’s and Ferid’s plan…
Yuu held back a sob and nuzzled his face in the soft fur of the only present Mika had given him some months after reuniting in Nagoya, when Yuu had claimed he clung to Mika in his sleep because he had no plushy with him. Mika had looked at him weirdly and a few days later, he had given the teddy bear to Yuu.
That didn’t stop Yuu from sleeping in the same bed as Mika, only that the teddy bear was tightly crushed between their bodies now.
And as much as it pained him, Yuu knew that those days weren’t coming back.
Because of his foolish mistake.
Some days he felt like he should have been the one to die instead of Mika, and the image of Mika smiling at him even when he was disappearing in ashes haunted him and Yuu suspected it would follow him forever, wherever he went, whatever he did.
The rain got stronger and the wind was howling furiously, so Yuu was not surprised when he felt a breeze, for the windows were not the best, and just shivered and hugged the teddy bear tighter.
What did surprise him was a gentle voice calling him.
“Yuu-chan.”
Yuu lifted his head slowly, blinking as his eyes adjusted to the darkness surrounding him.
“Mika?”
There was a low chuckle, and Yuu started looking around, hope glistering in his eyes while he slowly stood up, one arm tightly holding his treasure in place.
“Mika? Is that you?”
“Right next to you.”
Yuu turned, and certainly, Mika was standing there, his blue eyes sparkling with affection and a bright smile adorning his face.
Yuu gasped and tackled Mika into a tight hug, sobbing in his chest and inhaling Mika’s lemony scent, while the blond run his fingers through Yuu’s hair.
Once Yuu had calmed down, he took one step back to get a better view of Mika while still staying in his arms, and lifted one hand to caress Mika’s cheek.
It felt warm.
Mika leaned into the touch with a content sigh, and regarded Yuu with a soft smile.
“You kept the teddy bear,” Mika noted, and his amusement was clear in his face. Yuu laughed softly at Mika’s bewildered expression—when was the last time he had laughed, honestly?
“Of course I did. You gave it to me, remember?”
Mika’s smile widened, and Yuu’s heart skipped a beat at the sight he thought he would never see again.
“Mika, how—”
Mika shushed him and slowly leaned in, until he was resting his forehead in Yuu’s, who blushed at the closeness and the intensity in Mika’s eyes.
“Let’s go, Yuu-chan.”
“Go? Where?”
“You’ll see,” replied Mika, smiling gently.
Mika took some steps back and offered his hand to Yuu, who remembered that something similar had happened at Shinjuku, but this time he took it without hesitation.
Mika smiled, and Yuu saw how they were engulfed in a bright, golden light, while warmth ran throughout his whole body.
Distantly, he could hear Shinoa screaming, but he couldn’t bring himself to care anymore.
If he was with Mika, he was happy.
