“Yuu-chan?”
Yuu turned to see Mika approaching him, and smiled. Mika never failed to cheer him up: he didn’t have to do anything, just his presence was enough to make him forget all the bad memories and make him feel all warm over, in spite of the cold weather. Mika smiled back, sat down next to Yuu, their shoulders touching, and he was quick to grab his boyfriend’s hand and interlace their fingers together.
They stayed there for a while, sitting on a bench facing the river and watching the tourists come and go, the aroma of roasted sweet potatoes slowly filling the air. The smell was making Yuu hungry but he refused to acknowledge it, but Mika knew him so well, he felt the blond’s hold on him tightening and Yuu already knew what he was going to say before he opened his mouth.
“It’s okay,” whispered Yuu before Mika could mutter his apology. “I don’t regret being here with you. A little bit of hunger is nothing compared with the hell I would be living if I couldn’t be with you.”
“Still,” Mika protested weakly. “You could be right now studying in a prestigious university overseas, eating warm food whenever you got hungry and sleeping in a warm bed every night…”
“You warm my bed good enough,” laughed Yuu, nudging Mika with his shoulder. “I’d say that I don’t have any complaints about that, and maybe we won’t be needing extra blankets this winter if we get creative?”
“You kinky little shit,” Mika chuckled lightly. “Just don’t be complaining later about being sore.”
“When have I ever?” Yuu put his hand on his chest on mock indignation.
They laughed, and for a moment they forgot they were runaways, running away from Guren who wanted to ‘correct’ Yuu and send him far away from Mika, from Mika’s parents who had wanted to marry him to Akane, from the lives their parents had set for them, from everything that could separate them.
Just for now, they could pretend that they were on a honeymoon trip, just as Mika had promised Yuu when they first slept together, hidden in the darkness of Yuu’s room when Guren had gone out for a business trip and Mika’s parents were out in a movie date.
They were happy together, and that was all that mattered.
