For as long as she can remember, she has loved flowers. She studies them, reading books and learning about different flowers in detail. She loves the appearance and smell of flowers; most of her stims involve smelling beautiful flowers and looking at bright petals. And she loves planting flowers and watching them grow, nurturing them with water until they bloom. Yeah, growing and studying flowers are her favourite things to do (and her autistic special interest).
Well, her favourite things to do that don’t involve Kase.
Kase is her girlfriend, and Yamada loves her even more than flowers. They have been together for several months now, and Yamada genuinely adores every minute they spend together. Especially if the time they spend together has something to do with flowers – because that ties her two favourite things (her girlfriend and her special interest) together.
Kase loves track and sports in general, but Yamada is dreadful at them.
“I’m sorry,” Yamada says when the pair leave the locker room after gym class.
Kase glances at her, squeezing her hand. “What are you apologising for? What’s wrong?”
“It’s just…” Yamada stares down at her feet as they walk, her free hand twisting a lock of her hair. “You love sports and I’m so bad at tem. You join in when I’m going on about flowers, but I can’t join in with your interests. Sorry.”
Kase stops dead (ignoring the other students who complain about her blocking the hallway) and grasps Yamada’s other hand. “What are you on about? You don’t need to apologise. You’re not good at sports, but so are loads of people. Anyway, who said you need to join in to appreciate someone’s interests?” She smiles and squeezes Yamada’s hands. “I for one am always so happy to see you cheering me on.”
Yamada stares up at her girlfriend and smiles. “Thank you.”
Kase grins. “Now, should we water the flowers at lunchtime?”
Yamada grins too, cheeks flushing. “Sounds great.”
