we can make the world go still

Summary:

Taehyung doesn't think he's ever been this nervous in his life, obviously excluding the time he had a sax solo in the sixth grade concert and ended up puking all over his new dress shoes. Now that he thinks about it, this time might actually be worse.

Work Text:

Taehyung bounces anxiously on the balls of his feet, shuffling from side to side. He’s trying not to fidget, but with the nerves running through him it’s impossible. He’s been off of the train for only about twenty minutes now and the cup of coffee he pretended to want did nothing to calm his nerves after the two sips he took before tossing it. His phone vibrates and slightly startles him, seeing a text from Namjoon flash across the screen.

are you alright?

Taehyung gives a small smile at reading the message, and responds an affirmative quickly. Namjoon had been really worried before about Taehyung going to meet someone he’d never seen before, a stranger.

(“He’s not a stranger, though,” Taehyung insists. “He’s my boyfriend.”

“Taehyung.” Namjoon sighs, lightly pinching the bridge of his nose. “You do not know this guy. You’ve never met him--”

“Well, I’m clearly trying to change that.”

“--and what if he isn’t who he says he is? I just don’t want you to get hurt.”

It’s Taehyung’s turn to sigh now, closing his eyes and trying to regain his patience. He hates arguing with Namjoon, because he just doesn’t like fighting, and because it drains his energy at a comically fast pace. They’ve had this argument before. Multiple times, because Taehyung hates when Namjoon talks down or talks bad about his relationship. He knows it’s unconventional and not exactly the ‘normal’ way to meet someone and agree to date, but Taehyung doesn’t care. It doesn’t matter to him that Jimin is miles away, that they’ve never met, that all of their interactions over the past two years of knowing each other have been through digital matters only. What matters to Taehyung is that the feeling is there for him. For both of them. And not being right next to each other at all times is not going to change that.

“I know that you’re saying this because you care,” Taehyung starts, trying to keep his voice level before he gets mad, “but don’t you think I’ve heard all of this shit before? From you, from my coworkers, everyone. I get it, you don’t think this is normal or whatever the fuck else, but this is my relationship. And if this is a mistake then it’ll be on me. But right now I just need you to be my friend, and I just need you to trust me, okay?” Namjoon’s face softens just a touch, and Taehyung knows that this means that he feels kind of bad. “I’m gonna be fine, Joon. Seriously.”)

He hadn’t been happy letting Taehyung go this morning out of their shared apartment, even after Taehyung had offered for Namjoon to tag along in case he wanted to scope out the scene himself. But Namjoon had said he didn’t want to interfere with Taehyung’s “date”, (he actually used air quotes, making Taehyung a little annoyed) so he’s here now alone, which is better. He wants his first meeting of Jimin to be personal, to be just for them.

Taehyung has lived in the city for six years now and he’s not foreign to navigating his surroundings, but now he feels a rush as if it’s his first time stepping onto this sidewalk and breathing in this air. His phone buzzes again and this time it’s Jimin’s name flashing across the screen.

just got off the bus, are u here?

Taehyung doesn't think he's ever been this nervous in his life, obviously excluding the time he had a sax solo in the sixth grade concert and ended up puking all over his new dress shoes. Now that he thinks about it, this time might actually be worse. He really hopes he doesn’t throw up all over his shoes this time, especially before he meets Jimin. Plus, these are his favorite pair of boots. He shoots Jimin a quick text back saying he’s stepping into the bus terminal, swinging the door open and shoving past a few people standing in the way. He looks back down at his screen and texts Jimin again to ask what gate he’s at and suddenly feels someone’s hard body slam into his.

“What the fuck, watch where--” he looks up right into the eyes of Jimin. His Jimin, his boyfriend of eight months and counting, who is actually standing right in front of him, wide smile overtaking his face and giggles spilling past his lips. “Oh.”

“That is not the reaction I was expecting, to be honest. I’m sorry if I scared you.” But Jimin doesn’t look very sorry if the laughing he’s doing is anything to go by. Taehyung just stares, taking in all of Jimin’s flawless features. They’ve seen each other of course. Countless times through selfies and snapchat and facetime, but this is much different. He can actually see Jimin now. His light hair is tucked into a black beanie, cheeks a little pink from the biting wind outside and black coat elegantly draped over his small frame. Taehyung doesn’t realize how hard he’s smiling until the last second and a spur of the moment decision leads him to picking Jimin up and spinning him, squeezing him tight, right in the front entrance of the bus terminal. The shorter male lets out a faint squeal at the surprise of being lifted, but his laughter cuts right through into Taehyung’s ears and into his heart, making it swell.

“Hi,” Taehyung murmurs into Jimin’s neck when he finally puts him down, arms still wrapped around each other.

“Hey,” Jimin smiles and Taehyung matches it, the two of them probably looking like overly happy idiots and turning a few heads. “Wow, you’re--slightly taller than I pictured. I mean, I knew you were tall, but.”

“You’re way shorter than I thought you’d be.” Taehyung says bluntly, earning a punch in the shoulder from Jimin and they both laugh. “Still just as feisty as ever though, I see.” Jimin wraps his arms around the back of Taehyung’s neck, clasping his hands there.

“I thought you said your roommate was coming, too?”

“Oh, no. That was just--I don’t know, a just in case sort of thing. Joon is at home.” Taehyung unconsciously tightens his hands where they rest against Jimin’s waist under his coat, still not quite believing that they’re actually both here together.

“Good,” Jimin says, brushing Taehyung’s bangs out of his eyes with one hand. “Now I get to have you all to myself.” The last bit of the sentence is whispered slightly into Taehyung’s chin, the gentle lisp of Jimin’s words touching his skin before he presses a small kiss there. He stands on his toes a bit, kissing Taehyung on the mouth now, a short chaste thing that Taehyung still feels all the way down to his toes. “Come on.” Jimin says once he pulls away and grabs the other’s hand, but Taehyung doesn’t miss the slight blush on his cheeks. “Ready to play my tour guide for today?”

“Born ready for it,” Taehyung laces their fingers together and decides that his new favorite thing is the feeling of Jimin’s hand in his. “What do you wanna do first?” They walk out of the exit of the terminal, making a right turn down the sidewalk and into the crowds of bustling city-goers.

“Whatever you want,” Jimin replies. “I’m easy.”

“Yeah, I’ll say,” Taehyung jokes and Jimin gasps loudly, a smile on his lips as Taehyung laughs and gets punched in the shoulder again.

“You are rude!

They laugh and bicker the whole way towards their first destination on the agenda, and Taehyung beams the whole time, thinking to himself that he wouldn’t rather have it any other way.
