Work Text:
Yoongi can’t believe his luck. See, he does his part in the society: he throws his trash in their respective bins, he helps old ladies cross the street (well, maybe only once), he studies hard like the responsible student that he is, and he definitely believes that honesty is the best policy. He always makes sure to greet everyone with a smile no matter how grumpy he’s feeling, and he doesn’t ー at least not obviously ー roll his eyes whenever some snobby customer demands for the manager.
So why the fuck is all this shit happening to him now?
Working at the Starbucks near the campus was never much of a nuisance to Yoongi. He enjoys making the orders for the customers, the rich smell of the beans getting him through the day, and though he will never admit it, he actually also likes the rare times that he is placed on cashier-duty, too.
(Another perk is the free coffee, and that might actually be Yoongi’s favorite thing about working at the café.)
There were times, though, that he absolutely hated his job. Once, one of his friends and co-workers Hoseok had accidentally spilled boiling hot coffee on Yoongi. If you knew Yoongi, you would know that he is a man of few words, but oh ー once the coffee touched him, he proved to be the total opposite.
Needless to say, the customers present at the store that day heard more than just their names being called.
Tonight was another one of those times. Namjoon, their head of some sort, had decided that instead of their usual closing time of 10 p.m., the café had to be open for another two hours to accommodate all the “least, lost, and last” customers. Everyone else was fine with it, but Yoongi, of course, had greatly protested against this.
(“What’s with all the ‘least, lost, and last’ bullshit you’ve got going there? I don’t remember anything about Jesus saying that cafés had to be open until 12 fucking a.m.!
“Hyung, please. I don’t remember anything about Jesus saying that it can’t be done, either!”
“Do you know him personally, Joon? Did he tell you to do it?!”
“He didn’t have to tell me to do anything! I’m just trying to be a good fucking samaritan!”
“You idiots better shut up and get back to work if you don’t want Jesus to come get the two of you right now!”)
Now that he had just gotten off of the goddamn shift, he was ready to just drop on his bed and get all the sleep he can get before he has to drag his ass to class the next day. Yoongi had made a stupid mistake signing up for a 9 a.m. class on Wednesdays, and of course Namjoon had to make the groundbreaking change in their schedule on a Tuesday. At least he has a break of three hours after that class before his next one.
Yoongi was just walking by the street, humming to himself with his hands in his pockets and his mind amidst many things. He had never minded having to walk home from work, thinking that it can at least be some sort of exercise. The added hours to his shift did make him more tired than usual, but he knows he’ll get used to it eventually. He really should’ve expected it, what with it already being past midnight and with no one else around, not to mention the fact that he was alone.
He had in no way anticipated that this would happen at all, but apparently, throwing your trash in the proper bins and being a good student is not enough for you to be excused from a mugger.
Fuck this life.
“Hey, wait!” he yells, jogging to chase after the kid that was probably one of the younger guys at his university. The freshmen and sophomores can be pretty annoying pranksters, stuck-up idiots who think that they can get away with anything in college. “Give me back my wallet, you dumbfuck!”
The mugger doesn’t stop and wait, of course.
Yoongi doesn't care that he can probably get scolded and reported to the police if he continued shouting like that ー whatever happens, he’s going to drag the little shit down with him.
Why did Yoongi even have his wallet out? Not only did his wallet contain ー well, what else? ー his money, but it also had his damn university I.D. inside one of its pockets. He just had to have his wallet, of all fucking things, out in the open. Next time he’s walking home, he’s bringing a fucking backpack with a padlock on it.
Panting to catch his breath, Yoongi slows down. He very much wants to hit himself with a brick right now, but if there’s anyone that actually deserves to be hit by a brick, it’s that stupid mugger. It was no secret that he isn’t built for any physical activities and such, so he results to shouting profanities at the kid instead.
“You dick!” he screams as he tries to catch up. ‘Man,’ Yoongi thinks to himself as he almost crashes into a fire hydrant, ‘that is one athletic mugger.’
Suddenly, someone zooms past him, shouting a “Don’t worry! I’ll get it back for you!” over his shoulder. Yoongi then stops running, silently thanking the heavens that he can finally stop moving. (Oh, and that someone’s going to catch the fucker.) He takes a few more breaths before deciding to run after the guy, thinking it would be polite to at least chase as well instead of just standing around waiting like some princess.
He reaches the park, huffing to breathe properly. The night breeze was already pretty chilly, so Yoongi stops again and wraps his arms around his middle to warm himself. ‘Couldn’t they have just chosen someone else to fuck with?’ he thinks to himself as he sits on one of the benches around. He observes the trees swaying nearby, and before he knows it, his tiredness gets the best of him.
Yoongi will do anything to get his wallet back, but for now, he’ll rest.
~~~
He hadn’t realized that he had already fallen asleep (in the middle of the fucking park, for fuck’s sake, but can you blame him?) until he wakes up to someone shaking him and repeatedly saying “Yoongi-ssi?” Yoongi groans as he sits up, stretching a bit before yawning as his sleepy eyes focus on the stranger before him. The person seems to be a guy, but all Yoongi can really register in his current state is that the guy has blond hair.
“Wait, how did you know my name?” Yoongi asks, his brows furrowed in confusion. Where is he, anyway? He blinks his drowsiness away as he takes in his surroundings ー there are trees, bushes, benches, and a fountain in the middle of them all. How’d he wake up in the park?
“Oh, uh…” the guy in front of him mutters, a hand running through his hair, “I looked at the I.D. in the wallet I got back…” He hands out a wallet to Yoongi, who just takes it in confusion. Nothing was making any sense to his tired and sleepy mind. All he could remember was Jesus, Namjoon being some good samaritan, Seokjin shutting the both of them up, him walking home from work, his wallet getting stolen…
Oh. Right. His wallet was stolen.
Yoongi looks up at the stranger, everything suddenly clicking together in his brain. This guy must be the guy that chased after the mugger, and the wallet he received just now must be the goddamn wallet that was stolen from him earlier! Yoongi sighs in relief. He wants to thank the stranger for being around when he was mugged. How convenient of him to have been nearby even when it was already past midnight.
“Look,” Yoongi says, standing up to at least be able to thank the guy properly. They turn out to be roughly the same height, with Yoongi seeming to be taller by maybe only a few centimeters. “I have no idea who you are, but from the very bottom of my heart, I thank you for saving both my wallet and my life.” Who knows what could’ve happened to him if he had to continue running?
“It’s no problem, really,” the guy replies, smiling and shaking his head. “Being a good samaritan doesn’t take up much of my time, anyway.” Good samaritan? Yoongi gets hit by déjà vu, and then he gets hit by an idea.
“Do you study?” Yoongi asks, pocketing his wallet.
“Yeah!” the stranger answers, perking up at the subject. “I’m a dance major at the university near here. It’s already my third year.”
Yoongi nods. “That’s nice. I’m a senior majoring in music at the same university. Now listenー?” He leaves the end of his sentence open for the other guy to fill in with his name. The guy, however, then suddenly seems shy, looking down at his feet. He fiddles with the hem of his black hoodie, which Yoongi had now just noticed, before muttering an answer.
“Jimin. Park Jimin.”
“Okay, Jimin-ssi,” Yoongi says, drawing out the name, “you know the Starbucks just a little outside the campus?” He hums in approval when Jimin nods, continuing with his offer.
“Are you free tomorrow sometime around 11 a.m.?” Yoongi starts, standing up a little straighter. “I want to treat you for getting my wallet back. And for,” Yoongi runs a hand through his hair this time, “saving me from excessive physical activity.” He grins sheepishly at Jimin, who in turn giggles.
Jimin, however, shakes his head after. “It’s really fine, Yoongi-ssi,” he says as he smiles at Yoongi. “I don’t mindー”
“No,” Yoongi cuts him off, “I insist.” He sighs as he stretches, remembering just now that it was, in fact, already way past midnight. “I work there, anyway, so don’t worry about paying and all that. And I would really feel way better if I knew to myself that I was able to properly thank the guy who got me back my wallet. It’s really no big deal, Jimin-ssi.”
“Um, is it really okay with you?” Jimin looks down at his feet, and if Yoongi hadn’t known better then he would’ve thought that Jimin’s red cheeks were a result of him blushing. ‘Probably from the cold,’ Yoongi thinks to himself.
“Yeah. Meet me there at 11, ‘kay?” Yoongi remembers his 9 a.m. class the next day (today, in a few hours) and internally groans. “We should go home now. It’s already too late and too cold ー we don’t want to get sick, do we?”
Jimin shakes his head shyly, now slowly looking up at him. “You’re right. Thank you, Yoongi-ssi.”
Yoongi waves his hand at Jimin dismissively. “No, thank you. You can call me hyung. Good night then, Jimin-ah! Stay safe on the way home, all right?” Jimin nods, slowly this time, before smiling and waving as he walks away.
“Good night, hyung!”
Yoongi nods at him and smiles a little smile before turning around and (finally) making his way home. He puts his hands in his pockets to keep them warm, and as his fingers brush against the wallet that had gone through more drama than all those shows he sees on TV, he thinks of Jimin, the stranger who was kind enough to get it back.
‘Well,’ Yoongi thinks to himself as he tosses his wallet onto his desk later on, not bothering to check it for any lost contents, ‘that was certainly one wild fucking ride.’
~~~
“Jimin?” Taehyung repeats as he wipes the counter clean. “That’s his name?”
“Yeah. Park Jimin.” Yoongi had just finished telling his friends about The Fucked-Up Night™, explaining how some mugger (“He was so big and fast, I had such a hard time catching up with him!” “That’s what she said.” “Shut the fuck up, Hoseok.”) got him where he was now, waiting for the person that got his wallet back.
Taehyung giggles at the response, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “Interesting.” Yoongi grunts.
“You know what’s interesting, cashier-boy?” Yoongi chides, raising a brow. “You, the cashier-boy, aren’t at the cashier yet fulfilling your cashier-boy duties.” Taehyung rolls his eyes, muttering something that sounded dangerously close to “dork” under his breath.
“How does he look like?” Namjoon wonders, ignoring Seokjin’s smack on his shoulder once he asks this. Yoongi adjusts his stance, leaning further onto the counter as he tries to remember Jimin’s face. How does he look like?
“Why exactly are you interested, Joon?” Seokjin says, frowning at his boyfriend. (The no-dating-among-employees rule still stands ー or at least it used to until Seokjin threatened to break all of the coffee-makers.) He then turns to Yoongi and raises an eyebrow. “And you,” he says, pointing a finger at Yoongi, “either go get a table to wait for your date or make yourself useful and help clean the equipment.”
Yoongi furrows his eyebrows at this as Taehyung giggles behind him. “Yeah, hyung,” Taehyung teases, ”go and get ready for your date.” He walks away and goes on his phone, typing away. Namjoon elbows him, saying something about not using phones during work.
“Whatever,” Yoongi says dismissively, slightly rolling his eyes. “It’s not a date, and it’s not my shift right now, either.” He then turns to Namjoon. “And to answer your question, all I remember is him having blond hair and being just about as tall as me.”
Hoseok hums. “So he’s pretty fucking short, then.” Yoongi grabs the cloth Taehyung had been using just then and chucks it at Hoseok, who just laughs as he leans on the counter. Yoongi narrows his eyes and points his finger at the other threateningly.
“You shut your ass up before Iー”
“Oh, I think there’s your date, hyung,” Namjoon says. Yoongi is just about to correct him, saying that they are not having a date when he sees a guy with fluffy blond hair and a black leather jacket entering the café. The guy ー Jimin ー looks around for a moment before walking over to a table and sitting down. He puts his hands on his lap, fiddling with his thumbs and looking around seemingly nervously before he resorts to chewing on his nails.
What the fuck. That was Jimin? Yoongi didn’t really know what to expect seeing as he was too sleepy to even remember much of how Jimin looked like, but he certainly didn’t expect this. Seriously, how can someone even look adorable in a leather jacket while still looking hot just the same? He didn’t expect that such a cute, soft-looking, and beautiful man would have gotten his wallet back for him. Turns out good samaritans can be gorgeous samaritans, too.
Behind him, Hoseok snickers rather loudly. “The flies, hyung,” he teases. “You better close your mouth before they get in.” Yoongi narrows his eyes at him again, hissing another threat in his direction, but Seokjin hushes the both of them and tells Hoseok to arrange the milk cartons.
“Huh. I knew the name sounded familiar.” Yoongi snaps his head towards Namjoon, who just nods when Yoongi raises his eyebrows in question. “What do you mean the name sounded familiar?” Yoongi asks, surprised that Namjoon knows Jimin somehow. (And a bit jealous, if he were being honest, but he’s never going to admit that to anyone.) (Or to himself.)
Namjoon shrugs. “I’ve called his name a few times. I don’t know about you, but every shift I’ve had so far has had me whipping up his order.” Yoongi nods, taking in the information. How hadn’t he seen Jimin before? He had probably always been too engrossed in his coffee-making to really pay attention to the customers. Hey, it happens.
Another possibility is… Well, honestly, Yoongi can’t even remember what he ate for breakfast this morning; how do his friends expect him to remember every name he calls?
“Me, too,” Hoseok agrees, furrowing his eyebrows as he appears to think. He leans against the counter, right across Yoongi, before pointing at the other. “Don’t we share similar shifts, hyung? Surely you’ve already encountered him befoー”
“Okay, enough of all that,” Seokjin cuts Hoseok off, who in turn pouts before shrugging. “Yoongi, go to Jimin already. Don’t have him waiting too long. Can’t you see how tense he is?”
Looking over to Jimin, Yoongi notices that the man is pretty fidgety. He frowns as he sees him jiggling (is that even the right word?) his left leg, wondering what Jimin is so nervous about. Does Yoongi really look that scary? Oh, fuck. Yoongi shouldn’t have insisted for Jimin to meet him. The guy probably had his own reasons.
But Yoongi had his reasons, too. He was just too sleepy to really think anything thoroughly that his immediate response was just to treat the younger to some coffee. Who doesn’t like coffee? (Fuck. Maybe Jimin was so nervous because he doesn’t like coffee.) And who doesn’t like free food, anyway? The cakes they serve here at Starbucks are enough to turn a man insaー
“Hyung!”
Yoongi startles back to reality, grimacing as he realizes that he had just spaced out. The others have returned to their respective duties, and only Taehyung is left, who nudges him. “How am I supposed to attend to our customers if you’re in the way? Go now, hyung! Your date is waiting!” Yoongi scowls again, ready to correct him for the millionth time that they are, in fact, not having a date when Taehyung promptly sighs.
“Yeah, yeah,” Taehyung begins, waving a hand dismissively at Yoongi, “it’s not a date or whatever. But Jiminie over there is going to chomp all of his nails off if you don’t get there as soon as you can!”
Yoongi raises a brow. “Jiminieー?” How cute.
“Go break an ass!” Taehyung yells in encouragement, pushing Yoongi off the counter with a big smile on his face. ‘Wait,’ Yoongi thinks to himself, ‘shouldn’t it be “break a leg”?’ He turns to Taehyung, frowning.
Taehyung gasps, his eyes as wide as saucers. “Oh,” he exclaims, “I’ve made a mistake!” He then leans into Yoongi’s ear and whispers:
“Go break his ass, hyung.”
After deciding against strangling Taehyung for such a scandalous remark (seriously, has Taehyung not heard of Jesus even once? Namjoon can help him with that), Yoongi makes his way to Jimin, who visibly straightens his posture as he spots the elder. He flashes Yoongi a bright smile, his eyes actually turning into crescents as he waves.
Yoongi finds himself smiling as well, albeit shyly, and before he knows it, he feels his cheeks going warm. He ducks his head as not to let Jimin see how much of total mess he is, though he doubts that the younger hadn’t already seen his blush.
‘What the fuck are you being so nervous for now?’ Yoongi scolds himself. ‘There’s no reason to be so nervous about this shit! It’s not like this is some date or anything…’
He’s pretty sure he flushes even more at the thought of being on a date with Jimin, and he catches himself before he starts slapping some sense into his own brain. ‘Being beautiful is a privilege,’ Yoongi thinks to himself as he approaches the table. ‘Jimin must’ve been a hero in his past life or something to have been rewarded in this life like that.’
“Good morning, hyung!” Jimin greets him cheerily, bowing his head a little out of respect. Yoongi feels himself blushing again, but before he can think of avoiding eye contact, he decides it’s more polite to actually look the other in the eye instead of being some pussy. He brings his eyes up to meet Jimin’s, smiling the best that he can.
“Hey, Jimin-ah,” he replies as he sits across Jimin, “I’m glad you could make it. How are you?” ‘This is embarrassing,’ he thinks to himself. ‘Why did I tell him I’m glad he could make it? Now he probably thinks I have a crush on him or something…’ He ignores the other part of his mind screaming ‘But you’re starting to have one, you dumbfuck!’
“Well, I had a class earlier at 9 a.m., so right now I’m feeling pretty drained.” Jimin says with a little pout, and Yoongi finds himself thinking ‘Oh God that’s cute.’
“Aww, me too,” Yoongi coos before internally facepalming. What the fuck is with the tone he’s using right now? Damn, the power Jimin holds over him is just tooー
“...much.” Jimin cocks his head to the side, looking at Yoongi with big puppy eyes. “What was that, hyung?”
Yoongi’s own eyes widen.
“Oh, uh…” he trails off, thinking of an excuse. He actually said that out loud? “What did I say?” Fuck. He sounds so fucking stupid. If Hoseok were here right now, he would be all over the table, laughing at Yoongi’s sorry ass.
Jimin only shrugs, looking down and playing with his hands on the table, a small smile present on his face. “All you said was ‘much’, so I don’t really understand what you were trying to say.” Yoongi nods, resisting the urge to punch his own arm (that will embarrass him even further for sure).
“Ah,” he starts, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible. “I was just… hoping that you weren’t tired out too much. It’s only the start of the day, after all.”
‘Nice save, Yoongi,’ Yoongi thinks to himself. ‘You totally did not sound creepy.’ Seriously, what do parents eat these days? Jimin’s parents must’ve eaten a feast for Jimin to have turned out like this. Like a snack.
Jimin looks up at Yoongi, his eyes crinkling in amusement. “Thank you for worrying about me. It’s a good thing that I have a hyung who’ll treat me to coffee, then.” He smiles cheekily at Yoongi, giggling as he sees the other’s confused expression.
Yoongi, who had been resting his chin on his palm (his arm had been propped up on the table this whole time, though he himself hadn’t noticed so far), furrows his eyebrows together before seemingly snapping out of whatever thoughts he was just having.
“Oh, right!” he exclaims, straightening his posture as he tries to play off the fact that he had just been staring at Jimin. “I’m the hyung who’ll treat you to coffee. That’s what we’re here for, yes.” Jimin giggles again, which calms Yoongi down.
“Thank you again for getting me back my wallet last night, by the way,” he sincerely tells Jimin as he smiles earnestly, looking into the younger’s eyes to get his point across. “I really appreciate it.”
It is now Jimin’s turn to be shy, shying away from the eye contact as a faint blush paints his cheeks. “It’s really nothing, hyung. I do what I can.”
Yoongi shakes his head. “No, really. I mean it. My I.D. and the little money that I had were in there. Treating you to coffee is the least I can do.” He almost takes Jimin’s hands, which were just on the table right in front of him, but he thinks that he’ll probably look really dumb. He hasn’t even bought any coffee yet.
Jimin slowly looks up, finally meeting Yoongi’s eyes as he smiles and nods.
(Back in the counter, Seokjin watches them, shaking his head. He nudges Namjoon, who is preparing a drink beside him.
“Look, Joon. The two haven’t even bought anything yet, but they’re already looking at each other all lovey-dovey. Isn’t all of this over Yoongi’s wallet? This is ridiculous.”
Namjoon chuckles. “You’re being ridiculous. Just let them be, Jin. They’ll eat when they want to.”
Seokjin turns to Namjoon, an eyebrow raised and an unimpressed look on his face. “Or maybe I’m just jealous. Why don’t you ever look at me like that, huh?”
“What are you talking about, baby?” Namjoon says, using the one pet name that he knows Seokjin is a sucker for. “I look at you like that all the time.”
“Hmph. You probably do, but just not at me.”
Namjoon turns to him then, leaning into Seokjin’s ear as he lowly whispers:
“You know I only look at you.”
Seokjin visibly shivers, but before he can drag Namjoon into the back room, Hoseok spots the both of them and hits both of their shoulders, shaking his head.
“Nuh-uh. Back to work.”
Seokjin rolls his eyes, grumbling as he walks away ー but not without a promise of “Later” to Namjoon. Namjoon just chuckles as he returns to the drink he had been making.)
Yoongi nods as well. “Now, coffee. What do you want, Jimin-ah?” He thinks he sees Jimin’s cheeks slightly turn pink, but he shakes the thought away. ‘Probably just the lighting,’ he thinks to himself. Starbucks had invested in orange light fixtures, after all.
“I’d like a Caramel Macchiato, please!” Jimin replies giddily, his eyes turning into crescents once again as he smiles. “Caramel macchiatos are my favorite. They just really strike the perfect balance between bitter and sweet, you know? Well, at least for me, anyway.”
Hmm. Jimin likes caramel macchiatos? How convenient that that drink is Yoongi’s specialty, then.
“Noted,” Yoongi says as he stands, bringing out the wallet that brought them here. “That’s great insight right there. Let’s talk more about our coffee preferences when I get back, hmm? You do not understand just how much I really love coffee.” He internally winces at what he had just said. ‘God, Yoongi,’ he scolds himself, ‘can you be any more of a dork?’
Jimin, bless his soul, only nods, giggling that adorable little giggle of his, and Yoongi swears he feels his heart burst. Cute.
“Oh yeah, what size do you want?” Yoongi asks Jimin, thinking of what he’d like his own order to be. He settles on Caffè Latte for himself, and he also decides to get some sandwiches for the two of them as well. Yoongi can always avail of his employee’s discount, anyway, and Jimin did say he was feeling pretty drained. We can’t have that now, can we?
Jimin hums, looking up as he thinks for a while. Once he has seemingly already made a decision, he turns to Yoongi with another bright smile. Yoongi smiles back, leaning into Jimin to listen to his request.
“Venti, hyung,” Jimin says with a mischievous glint in his eyes. He then leans closer into Yoongi, only stopping short of the other’s ear as his voice drops down to a whisper. “I like them big.”
Yoongi almost chokes on his saliva as he leans back. Jimin beams up at him, unaware of Yoongi’s internal mental war (though Yoongi is certain that Jimin is very aware of the innuendo he just made). What the fuck did he just say? Yoongi only nods as he turns away seeing as he can’t think of anything to respond with. What the fuck do you even say to that? ‘Me too’?
Cute and freaky. He’s the dream.
Putting all of his “freaky” thoughts aside, Yoongi walks over to the counter, where Taehyung is at. Luckily, he doesn’t have to wait in line for too long.
“‘Sup, hyung?” Taehyung greets once Yoongi reaches him, his big boxy grin on display. Yoongi just nods, about to respond, when Taehyung interrupts him before he can speak. “I take that your date’s going pretty well? You have this stupid smile on your face, you know, and as much as I love that for you, it’s making me want to barf.”
Yoongi’s eyebrows shoot up in surprise. “I do?” Oh fuck. Was he being too obvious? ‘This isn’t even a fucking date, you idiot,’ Yoongi scolds himself, though the thought of it not being a date kind of makes him sad, if he were being honest (though he’ll never acknowledge that).
Taehyung nods. “Hmm. You look like you’re about to get married. Are you getting married?” Yoongi flushes at Taehyung’s tease, avoiding eye contact with the younger. He and Jimin have only met, for fuck’s sake. Was he really looking that affected about it?
Fuck it. Yoongi is in a good mood.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Taehyung,” Yoongi says with all of the dignity he has left in him, though he really can’t stop smiling. “I’ll have a Venti Caramel Macchiato, a Grande Caffè Latte, and two of those chicken wraps, please. For here.”
Rolling his eyes (but looking fairly amused), Taehyung inputs the order, and he shows Yoongi his total. Yoongi gets the cash from his wallet and hands it over to Taehyung, who does what he has to do with it. Yoongi smiles at the younger as he watches him do his job evidently endeared. Taehyung is like a brother to him, and they may not look like it, but they actually have a pretty close relationship.
“Here’s your change and receipt, you old grump,” Taehyung teases as he gives Yoongi a few coins and his receipt. Yoongi doesn’t take offense at the name, already used to being called that, and just takes his change from Taehyung. Good ol’ cashier-boy.
“I don’t think that’s how you’re supposed you treat our customers, you absolute pain in the ass,” Yoongi counters. “But thanks.” He starts placing the stuff into his wallet, already starting to walk away, but Taehyung stops him before he can walk any further.
“What’s that in your wallet, hyung?”
Yoongi stops and looks at Taehyung, a confused expression on his face. “Hmm?” He looks down at his wallet and sees a small strip of paper sticking out of one of its pockets, and Yoongi’s eyebrows furrow in curiosity. How hadn’t he seen this before? Taking it out, he inspects it, and on one of its sides, in perfectly neat writing, it says:
Park Jimin
xxx-xxxx
Call me? :)
Wait. What the fuck? Park Jimin? Park Jimin with the blond hair and the black leather jacket? Park Jimin with the adorable smile and the adorable giggle? Park Jimin, who Yoongi may or may not be starting to have a crush on? Park Jimin, who he was actually with right nowー
“Venti Caramel Macchiato and Grande Caffè Latte for Yoongi!”
Pocketing both the paper and his wallet, Yoongi walks over to the claiming counter, where his “super duper mega ultra best friend” (Hoseok’s preferred term) is at. Hoseok hands a tray of Yoongi’s order to him with a smug smirk, but once he sees the latter’s distracted expression, his own face falls.
“Okay, hyung. Whatever it is, we’ll work through it. We can always buy him a toenail clipper if it’s that kind of problem, but if it’s his breath that we’re talking about, then you’re on your own, buddy. On a scale of one to ten, how bad is the date going?”
The date? Oh, yeah. Just peachy. Everything had been going pretty well until he found Jimin’s number in his wallet. Yoongi doesn’t know if the discovery made him feel betrayed or even more turned on (he’s weird that way).
Shaking his head, Yoongi furrows his eyebrows. “No, no, it’s going fine. Shit is just… weird.” How the fuck. Did Park Jimin’s number. End up. In his wallet.
Hoseok nods. “You can do this, Yoongles. You’ve gone through worse. Remember when we went to that one party where the beer tasted weirdly of ranch dressing?”
Yoongi shakes his thoughts away, shuddering once war flashbacks are brought up in his mind. “Oh, yeah. That was really fucking disgusting.”
“Mmm. I couldn’t taste anything else for days. Now, return to your date already, alright? Feed him our delicious chicken wraps for his appetizer, and then he can have you as his main course afterward, eh?”
Yoongi frowns, though he flushes a color that is synonymous to “really fucking red”. “Don’t be weird, Hobi. You’re making me want to unfriend you.” Oh, who is he kidding? He loves Hoseok’s annoying ass with all of his heart.
Hoseok rolls his eyes, a soft smile on his face. “Go! Don’t keep him waiting again, you gay raisin.”
With a grateful nod towards his best friend, Yoongi takes the tray and makes his way back to Jimin, his mind still clouded with a million thoughts.
“Hey, Jimin-ah,” Yoongi says as he reaches their table, setting the tray down in front of his “date”. Jimin, who had been using his phone while waiting for Yoongi, practically lights up at the sight of food before him. He tucks away his phone, licking his lips as he grabs his cup and takes a sip.
“Mmm!” he exclaims, beaming at Yoongi like a little kid. “I really love this drink. And thank you for the sandwich, too, hyung! This is already too much!” Yoongi shakes his head as he takes his own beverage, smiling back at Jimin. “It’s really no problem. As I said, this is the least that I can do.”
Jimin giggles as he places his cup back on the table. Yoongi can watch him all day, just listening to the younger giggling, and he decides to keep the case of the suspicious number at the back of his mind for the meantime.
The two talk for a long while as they consume their respective food. Yoongi learns a lot about Jimin’s family, about their family cat, about how the cat apparently looks like Yoongi, and about Jimin’s current university situation as it is. In return, Yoongi also shares about his own family, his nutso but lovable friends, his experiences working at a Starbucks, and of course, his own adventures as a music major. Yoongi finds that Jimin is really easy to talk to, and his humor turns out to match the younger’s perfectly.
‘This can work,’ Yoongi thinks to himself, smiling as he considers formally asking Jimin out afterward. But alas, the piece of paper he had found just moments ago comes back to haunt his thoughts once again, and before Yoongi can think of further avoiding it, he opts to find an answer to the mystery instead.
“Hey, uh…” Jimin looks up at him expectantly as he finishes sipping his coffee, tilting his head to the side in question. Yoongi takes out the now-crumpled piece of paper and sets it in front of Jimin, observing the younger’s reaction once his eyes see the object. “Would you mind explaining this?”
Yoongi sees the exact moment that all color is drained from Jimin’s face.
“O-Oh my god,” Jimin sputters as he covers his face with his hands, though he’s not doing a very good job at it as Yoongi can still see the younger’s flaming cheeks. “Please don’t be mad, hyung. I’m so sorry.”
Yoongi’s eyes widen in surprise. What the fuck is he saying? “Oh, no no! Don’t worry about it. I’m not mad at you, Jimin-ah. I’m just really confused. And kinda in shock.” Jimin doesn’t need to know how the mini Yoongis inside his brain had honestly practically rejoiced at the sight of Jimin’s number.
Jimin sighs, removing his hands from his face, though he still isn’t meeting Yoongi’s eyes. “It’s… a really long and complicated story.”
Hmm. Yoongi likes stories. “Hit me.”
“I…” Jimin sighs again, grimacing in embarrassment before continuing. “See, we’ve been planning this for quite some time now ー a whole month, actually ー and we finally put it into action last night. Hobi-hyung had told us that you always have your wallet out when you walk home, and Taetae gave us your schedule so that we’d be able to time everything perfectly. The plan was for one of my best friends Jungkook to steal your wallet when you’re on your way home one night, and then I’d swoop in and save the day like some hero by running like three blocks, as long as I’m far enough for you not to see me anymore, just to get it back. But before I give it back to you, I slip a piece of paper with my number on it into one of its pockets so that you can maybe… I don’t know… call me?”
Woah. What the fuck. (Everything made sense; it perfectly explained why the mugger was so hard to catch up to.) Jimin went through all that shit just to get Yoongi to call him? He looks at the younger, who is still avoiding eye contact and is still as red as ever.
“Wait, you know Hobi? And Taehyung? And Jungkook?” Yoongi asks, trying not to focus on the calling part too much. He still can’t wrap his head around the fact that Jimin, the most adorable man he had ever met, had actually wanted Yoongi to call him. What the fuck.
Jimin weakly nods, a guilty expression on his face. “I met Hoseok-hyung through the campus dance team and we instantly became close, and Tae is my one true soulmate.”
Yoongi nods as he sips his coffee, taking in the information. So those fuckers knew all along. “How about Jungkook?” Jungkook was in one of Yoongi’s classes, and he had talked to him a few times during the discussions. He’s a pretty smart kid, being a sophomore that had been allowed at an upper-level class.
“He’s Taehyung’s boyfriend. I only met him last year, but we’ve been pretty close ever since.” Taehyung’s boyfriend, hmm? That’s cute. “He’s actually here right now, just a few tables behind you.”
Damn. Yoongi looks behind him, and sure enough, Jungkook is seated at a table in the back, sipping coffee and reading a newspaper. He even has a disguise: a pair of sunglasses is perched on his nose, and on his head is a bright blue beanie, which would have been fine if he also didn’t have a ridiculously curly blond wig on.
Jungkook spots both Yoongi and Jimin looking at him when he looks up from his newspaper, and he shoots finger guns at the two, smiling widely. But when he sees Jimin facepalm behind Yoongi, Jungkook shrugs and gets back to what he was reading.
“I see,” Yoongi comments. So this was Jimin’s whole army. He doesn’t know if he should be freaked out or impressed, but right now he’s leaning more towards the latter. Jimin is braver than the Navy Seals.
Again wincing grimly, Jimin looks up at Yoongi. “I promise that all I really planned to do was give you my number in hopes of getting a call. It was never my actual intention to get a coffee date with you!” he explains, and Yoongi pouts. Jimin sees this and smiles sheepishly, brightly blushing all over again. “Though I gotta admit that I like this setting way more than what I was hoping to get.”
Yoongi hums in approval, the Stupid Smile™ making a comeback on his face. “Is that why you were suddenly so shy when I asked you to meet me for coffee?” Jimin nods.
Well. But there was still a question that won’t stop bothering Yoongi, and he was determined to find the answer to it. “Why all the hassle, though? Why… Why me?”
Jimin visibly flushes an even darker shade, pouting in an attempt to look threatening, but Yoongi only chuckles at this. ‘He really looks adorable whatever he does,’ he thinks to himself. (Though Yoongi does admit that he’s turning red himself ー he must’ve helped a cat cross the road or something back in his past life to have been rewarded with Jimin’s presence.)
“When I first tasted the Caramel Macchiato a few months back, I honest-to-god immediately fell in love with it. I asked Tae who the barista who made my drink was, and when I saw you when he pointed at you, I guess I kinda… fell in love with you, too. Tae and Hobi-hyung have told me a lot about you.”
Oh my god. Is Jimin being serious? Is Yoongi dreaming right now? Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Is Yoongi caught in a landslide with no escape from reality? Is there a fire truck nearby? Yoongi can seriously feel his cheeks burning.
“I only ever really saw you whenever I go here, and very rarely on campus. I’d feel really giddy whenever you were the one making my order, and my heart would burst every time you call my name. It was all I could do to tame my, um…” Jimin trails off, suddenly shy all over again, “crush on you.”
Yoongi internally sighs. Rest in peace, Yoongi’s heart. You will probably be missed.
“I was content with just going here every now and then ー okay, maybe like three times a week ー because just seeing you working and preparing beverages with that cute little smile on your face is already more than enough for me, you know?” Oh god, Jimin indirectly called Yoongi cute!
“But Tae said that I should try something; “give it a shot”, he had said, so, uh…” Jimin pauses for a while and shrugs, a sheepish smile and a deep blush on his face. “Here we are now, I guess.”
Oh man. Can he get any more adorable? Yoongi just wants to wrap him in a blanket, give him kisses, hold his hand, make him smile, and keep him with him in his pocket forever. Is that possible? That can be done, rightー
“Yoongi-hyung?”
Yoongi snaps out of the sea of thoughts in his head, just then remembering that he was, indeed, in the presence of the most adorable man he has ever met.
“I hope you’re not mad,” Jimin mumbles, a frustrated pout brewing in his features as he once again avoids meeting the elder’s eyes. “I didn’t mean to go overboard. I promise that I’ll leave you alone if you want me to ー I really understand. Just please don’t ban me from the café. I’m sorry, hyung.”
Did… Did Yoongi hear that right? Oh hell fucking no.
“What? No! Don’t be ridiculous, Jimin-ah. I’m not banning you from the café.” Yoongi can’t believe that Jimin actually thought he would be banned. He will never, and besides ー he doesn’t have the power to do so, anyway. Jimin’s pout only intensifies, his cheeks still as red as ever. Yoongi sighs.
“Jimin, look at me.”
Noting that the dance student is still refusing to meet his gaze, Yoongi takes Jimin’s hands, which were fiddling with each other on the table, into his own, enveloping them in warmth to assure the other that it’s fine.
“Hey, it’s okay. Listen to me, all right? It’s really okay, I promise.”
Jimin then slowly looks up, and just like in any romantic drama, the two finally make eye contact. They stare into each other’s eyes for a while, both of their faces painted a deep red blush, before Jimin unceremoniously removes his hands from the elder’s hold and hits Yoongi on the shoulder, earning a very loud and surprised yelp from Yoongi and no-doubt directing the attention of the whole café to themselves.
Yoongi’s eyes are as wide as the Starbucks logo they have outside, and he whirls around to apologize to the people around him. As he’s turning, he catches the teasing smiles on his friends’ faces, and he shoots a death glare back in their direction.
Okay, but what the fuck. “What the fuck was that for?!” Yoongi hisses at Jimin once he turns back to him, who just flashes him a sheepish pout. Don’t get him wrong, though ー Yoongi is nowhere near mad. He’s just… confused. (And embarrassed, if he were being honest, because did Jimin withdrawing his hands from their hold mean that he didn’t like it? Yoongi loves hand-holding.)
Jimin huffs. “You were being too cheesy, hyung.”
Wait, what? Yoongi bursts out laughing, his gums now fully showing themselves as he gasps for air. Jimin is just too adorable for his own good, and Yoongi’s poor, poor heart is not holding up well anymore.
“Are you kidding me?” Yoongi says once he’s calmed down, eyes bright and gleaming at Jimin. “Anyway, what I was trying to say before you so rudely interrupted me ー” this earns Yoongi another slap on the shoulder “ー is that I’m not mad at you at all. You seriously think that I’d ban someone who has made me laugh so much today that I fear I’ll never know sadness again?”
Jimin groans, hiding his face in his hands as he once again blushes a deep crimson color. “There you go again!” he complains, his voice being muffled by the cover. Yoongi chuckles as he reaches out his hand to fondly ruffle Jimin’s hair, amazed at how it’s even softer than it looks.
“Listen, Jimin-ah.”
The younger of the two looks up, meeting Yoongi’s gaze.
“Don’t beat yourself up over this. I’m honestly…,” Yoongi pauses and looks away for a second, willing away his embarrassment before he continues, “thankful that all of this happened. If it weren’t for this plan of getting me to call you, then I wouldn’t have met someone with such a wonderful personality and made a new friend.”
The expression present on the other’s face still looks doubtful, so Yoongi decides to just risk it all and say what he’s really feeling. Fuck everything. I’m going for it.
“But, after realizing how much of an amazing person you are during the mere time that we were together, I have come to the decision that I definitely don’t mind seeing how far this can go.”
Jimin furrows his eyebrows, pouting. “Shut up, hyung. You’re only saying that because you feel bad for me.”
“No. I’m saying this because it’s how I really feel. I’m starting to like you as well, Jimin-ah. Do you even see how beautiful and kind you are?”
Yoongi’s eyes widen as he realizes what he had just said, and Jimin faceplants into the table. ‘Stupid brain-to-mouth filter!’ Yoongi scolds himself. ‘’You never fucking work when I need you the most!’ He feels his cheeks heating up all over again, and he prays that none of his friends are looking. They will never let him live this down.
“Anyway, I, uh…” Yoongi trails off, not knowing what to say. What do you even say after you accidentally confess your feelings of attraction to someone you have just met? He felt like that princess from the movie where the girl with ice powers freezes the whole kingdom or something. (Not that Yoongi is a princess, no. That wasn’t what he was trying to say.) (Yoongi is a queen.)
“You are just so cute,” Jimin mumbles from his position, his head just millimeters away from his Caramel Macchiato. Yoongi’s eyebrows shoot up in surprise, but before he can activate his brain-to-mouth filter, he instead blurts out an immediate response of “You’re cuter.”
This results to an embarrassed yet giddy squeal from Jimin, and Yoongi turns away, wishing for his cheeks to just calm the fuck down, please, thank you.
“And you two,” Seokjin says, having magically appeared at the table and managing to scare the living shit out of both Yoongi and Jimin, “are idiots. Can you please just hurry up and kiss already or something? We’re getting bored.”
Yoongi shoos Seokjin away with a “Fuck off, hyung, what the fuck is wrong with all of you” before turning back to Jimin. “God, those guys have been teasing me about this whole thing all morning. This wasn’t even a date!”
Jimin nods, suddenly visibly deflating and looking down at his feet. “Yeah. It wasn’t.” Oh my god he is so adorable please kill me now. Smiling, Yoongi agrees. “Right? How dare they assume shit like that. Our first official date is tomorrow!”
Jimin’s head snaps up so fast, Yoongi doubts that he didn’t get whiplash. “What do you mean?” he asks, a glint of hope in his eyes and the bright red blush back on his face.
“I’m asking you out for real this time, dummy.”
With eyes as wide as the vinyl records Namjoon owns and his mouth in the shape of an ‘o’, Jimin lets out a gasp. He blinks a few times, looking like a fish underwater, and Yoongi chuckles. He is so fucking cute holy shit I just wanna know what I did in my past life to deserve this.
“Are you serious?”
“Are you free tomorrow sometime at 11 a.m.?”
“Great, now I’m getting déjà vu. Thanks, hyung.”
The said hyung heartily laughs, his gums making another appearance. “I’ll take that as a yes, then.” Jimin just beams up at him with a soft look on his face, giggling as he takes a sip of his still unfinished Caramel Macchiato. Yoongi smiles back at the younger as he drinks his own beverage, happy thoughts running through his head.
Yoongi can’t believe his luck. See, never in a million years had he ever expected for his wallet to be stolen, so the first time that it happens, he’s thankful that it would end up leading him to such a wonderful person like Jimin. So when Yoongi gets hit on the shoulder again and is called “so fucking cheesy” for writing down his own number and the words ‘Call me?’ on a Starbucks napkin, all he does is show his gums. Smiling.
