Chapter Text
Theo was bouncing on seat as he looked out the window. "I promise I'll be good! Can we go now?!"
You sighed, then unbuckled. "Wait for me to open your door." Not that he had a choice, you kept the child locks on the doors because as obedient as your son was, he got excited and tended to rush towards whatever it was that was exciting him. That was one of the reasons the school counselor had suggested you adopt a hybrid. Not only would it provide Theo with a friend to play with but it might slow him down a little while he makes sure his friend is still with him.
Which is what brought you to the adoption center.
You waited until he was sitting still and opened the door. "No running, no yelling, no leaving my side unless I tell you you can. Now, we're here to find you a friend but we don't necessarily have to get one today. Okay?"
He looked up at you, his eyes the same color as yours and shining with excitement. His hair, which you had carefully combed, was a mess. Thankfully his clothes were devoid of stains since he had dressed after breakfast and wouldn't have lunch until after.
You smoothed his hair.
"Mom?"
"Hmm? Did you say yes?"
He nodded, grinning at you, and taking your hand. "I'll be good!" He bounced on his toes.
You smiled and nodded. "Alright, let's go. You've been really patient."
He pulled you all the way to the building, then through the door. "Hi!"
The worker grinned. "Hello. Welcome to Cedarbrook Adoption Center."
"I'm y/n, this is my son Theo. I called yesterday," You told him, keeping a firm hold on Theo's hand when something caught his attention and he pulled on you.
The worker nodded. "Ah! Yes! We'll have one of our specialists with you in a second if you'll take a seat."
You nodded. "Okay, come on, Theo."
Theo reluctantly sat down next to you, kicking his feet back and forth and looking around curiously. "Do you think we'll get a dog hybrid? Or a cat hybrid? Maybe a bunny hybrid? Ooh! Or--"
"Or whatever one seems to fit with us. Let's just calm down, kiddo. If you're too excited then they could get nervous." You kept attempting to get his hair to lay flat, but it just rebelled as always. It was something that reminded you of his father. His gorgeous, amazing father who had died without ever seeing this precious being that somehow managed to wring every drop of energy from you.
Theo was your world. The thought of interrupting the careful balance you already had in your home was stressful, but you knew that it was time for a change. Theo needed this, and everyone you consulted had said that it would actually really help you too.
Whatever was best for Theo.
"Hello, my name is Jungkook. I'm going to help you find a hybrid today." A man with bright eyes and a charming smile greeted you and gave Theo the high five that was expected. "Any idea what we're looking for today?"
You nodded for Theo to talk.
His face scrunched as he thought of serious answers. "A boy."
"Okay," Jungkook said patiently, smiling down at Theo.
"I want to be able to play with him," Theo said, then looked at you before looking determinedly at Jungkook. "I know what I want, but not how to say it."
Jungkook laughed. "I understand. Come on back. You can lead the way."
Theo looked up at you, then nodded and hurried off with Jungkook when you smiled your permission. He was talking a mile a minute while you looked through an information pamphlet Jungkook had given you when he came in. It had quick information about the traits of the different types of hybrids and how the hybrids are cared for here.
"Alright, we've passed the babies and toddlers. These are the four and five year olds. You're striking me as an awesome six-year-old. Do you want a hybrid younger, the same age, or older than you?"
"Older," Theo said, walking past that room. And the next.
Jungkook looked back at you.
You shrugged and gestured that it was Theo's choice. You'd been told that it was important that the hybrid be his choice, and he had his own thoughts about what he wanted.
Which made you nervous, but you also knew that kids--especially your kid--had a really good sense about people.
You were surprised when he went into the room of hybrids over twenty. You were standing by the door, watching with confusion as your son went around the room observing all the hybrids in there.
They regarded him with curiosity, reacting to him in a friendly manner.
Jungkook stayed beside you. "He knows what he wants. That's good. And an older hybrid won't be as high of maintenance for you," He said, obviously sensing how tense you were. He offered you a comforting smile.
"Still, it's strange that he's picking one that's an adult." You rubbed your arms in apprehension, watching to see what his choice would be.
He was talking to a few of them now, nodding in response.
They were gathered around him and he was so calm compared to how he normally was. He pointed back at you, seeing you watching and grinning.
You waved a little.
"Your husband...?" Jungkook asked, looking at his clipboard.
"Died. Before Theo was born. Actually, I didn't even know I was pregnant when he died."
Jungkook nodded, making a note as he bit his lip.
"Are you a good story reader? Do you do voices?" Theo asked a hybrid, following it over to a different area with some chairs.
You didn't hear the responses, but Theo looked pretty happy.
"Do you sing? Do you know lullabies?" He asked, grabbing the hybrid's hand and leading him toward you.
The hybrid nodded, then glanced up at you and suddenly looked a little shy.
You fought the urge to blush as well.
He was hands-down the most beautiful and handsome man you'd ever met.
"This is my mommy. She's the best. Isn't she pretty?"
The hybrid nodded, stepping partially behind Theo.
"Mommy, this is Taehyung. Can we take him home?"
"You're sure, sweetie?" You asked, but you'd never known him to be unsure about anything. Even the things you'd wish he would be unsure about, such as his dislike of carrots.
"I'm sure," Theo said, nodding firmly and then taking your hand in his other one.
"Okay," You said, looking at Jungkook. "Paperwork?"
He nodded, smiling. He looked genuinely happy about Taehyung getting chosen. "We'll go take care of it. Tae, grab your things and say goodbye to the others?"
Taehyung nodded.
Theo hesitated. "Mommy, can I stay back here while you do paperwork and play with everyone?"
"Um..."
"It's okay with us," Jungkook said softly.
Taehyung met your gaze, a little less shy already. "I'll keep him safe."
Something in your head told you that it was best to start off with trusting Taehyung with Theo. You'd have to eventually anyway and frankly, being in a secure building was as good a place to start as any.
You nodded. "Okay. I'll be right back." You kissed the top of Theo's head and followed Jungkook to fill out the paperwork.
Last you saw, Theo was following Taehyung further into the room with a hop in his step.
Next you saw of him, he was being tossed in the air by the hybrid and caught just as easily, both laughing and the other hybrids seeming to feed off of the positive energy they created.
Theo had his father's smile.
You went over cautiously, smiling. You had a few information packets and some things to help make Taehyung’s transition a little easier (not that Jungkook seemed concerned, he said that he was required to give it out and that Taehyung would transition just fine), but mostly you just had Theo’s backpack since he had abandoned it in the waiting area.
Taehyung noticed you and set Theo down, looking sheepish and scared. “Uh, sorry—”
Theo was trying to get back up. “More! Please?”
You laughed softly. “He loves that. He got too big for me to do it last year. As long as you’re careful, I don’t mind. We should get going, Theo, it’s almost lunch time.”
Theo grinned and ran, crashing into your legs. “Food!” He turned toward Taehyung. “Food! Let’s go!”
Taehyung nodded as well, clutching a pillow and a pillowcase that was stuffed with his belongings after another hybrid handed it to him. “Y-yeah, let’s go.”
The other hybrids said more goodbyes to him, while you slowly headed for the door.
Theo was racing toward the door, excited about food. “Come on Tae-tae! We have to get lunch.”
“Theo, your backpack?” You prompted, giving Taehyung more time to say goodbye.
Theo froze, then looked around wildly before realizing you were carrying it and rushing to you. “Sorry, mommy, thanks.” He put it on with your help, then gripped the straps and looked up at you excitedly.
“What did we talk about?” You asked gently, smiling.
He looked up at you sheepishly. “No running off without your permission. Sorry mommy.”
You dropped down to kiss the top of his head. “It’s okay, baby, it’s an exciting day. Just stay where I can see you and let’s not leave Taehyung behind, huh?”
His eyes widened and he looked back at Taehyung. “Oh no!” He ran and latched onto Taehyung’s leg. “I didn’t mean to leave you behind.”
Taehyung laughed and picked him up, nuzzling his face, and then just carrying Theo out into the hall.
You took the pillow and pillowcase so that he wasn’t holding all three, giving him a reassuring smile.
Theo started telling him about kindergarten, and his bedroom, and the house, and everything that he could think of. He just talked on and on. And on. He was a loquacious thing.
He was still talking when you were taking him from Tae to strap into the carseat. He only paused when you closed his car door.
You looked apologetically at Taehyung. “He’s going to be talking for another couple hours. He gets like this when he’s excited. He’ll calm down after he gets some food and runs out of things to tell you.”
Taehyung smiled happily. “That’s okay. I’m excited too. He’s great.”
“You can either take the front seat or sit in back with him.”
He gestured that he would take the back, following you around to the other side of the vehicle.
Theo talked the whole drive home, and as they got out of the car, and as you unlocked the door and let them into the house. He dragged Taehyung back to his bedroom before you could say a word.
You sighed and shook your head, he was like this when he had a playdate too. You just resigned yourself to making lunch and letting Taehyung know the house rules after Theo had fallen asleep during the nap time that he was ‘too old for’ (he conked out at the same time every day).
You checked your email while the water for macaroni and cheese was boiling, grimly noting the emails from your clueless coworker that heralded a difficult workday on Monday. “Theo, sandwich or hot dog?”
“Hot dog!” He cheered from his room, then you heard him go right back to chattering, probably introducing Taehyung to his four stuffed animals and all of his other toys.
You turned on the broiler, and got the hot dogs out of the fridge.
Theo pulled Taehyung into the kitchen. “This is the kitchen!”
“Taehyung, what do you eat?”
“Everything,” He replied easily.
“Hot dogs and mac and cheese?”
He nodded, smiling still. He looked genuinely pleased and seemed to be relaxed. His tail wagged gently, and his collie ears were swiveled toward your son as he listened carefully to every word that was uttered. He guided Theo around you and into the dining room without ever interrupting. His smile just got bigger and bigger.
Lunch was the usual of Theo talking and you listening while eating, except Taehyung was there, also listening and asking little questions.
Theo dragged Taehyung off the moment the man finished his own lunch.
You did the dishes, cleaned the kitchen, picked up the living room, put Taehyung’s things in the spare bedroom, and straightened up in there for him. You peeked in on them in Theo’s room, seeing they were playing with the army men. Your watch said that you had another half hour before he crashed, maybe a little longer with how excited he was.
You looked over the ingredients in your fridge, planning out dinner until you heard a shuffling sound behind you.
Taehyung was standing there. “He’s asleep.”
You smiled. “You okay? He can be a lot to handle.”
Taehyung just grinned. “He’s great. I love him. He’s so bright and energetic. We’re going to have a lot of fun.”
You nodded. “This room over here will be your room. I put your pillow and things on the bed. Anything else you need we can buy.” You pulled an extra blanket from the closet. “Especially clothing. I only have to work until lunch on Monday and we can go to the store to get you whatever you need. Okay?”
He nodded, looking around and then out the window. “This is really nice. Thanks. I’ll be a good hybrid, I promise.”
“I’m sure. Jungkook had the highest praises for you,” You told him, then smiled. “Well, if he’s asleep, we only have about half an hour before he wakes up again. Might as well give you a breather and let you acclimate.” You dipped your head to him and left him looking after you with an expression you didn’t understand.
You went to your own room, looking over some bills that for once you didn’t have to worry about. You’d gotten that raise that you deserved the moment management had changed, and suddenly you weren’t having to cut corners just to make ends meet, another reason you were able to adopt a hybrid for Theo.
Someone shook you gently.
You started, sitting up and bonking heads with him. “Ah!”
“Sorry! Sorry, um, Theo started throwing up. He’s okay right now, I gave him some ginger ale.” Taehyung sounded a little uncertain.
You mentally cursed. “He must have a migraine. He’s not throwing up now?” You rubbed your head.
He nodded. “He stopped a while ago, I just left his side because he seemed a little better.”
“Thanks, Taehyung.” You got up, running a hand through your hair, and going out to where Theo was miserably watching ancient episodes of Winnie the Pooh. You ran a hand through his mop of hair. “Hey, baby. Taehyung said you were sick?”
He rubbed his head, pouting and reaching out to you.
You sat and pulled him into your lap. “Migraine, baby?”
He nodded and curled into you. “Hurts, mom.”
You kissed his head and got comfortable. “Taehyung took good care of you, baby?”
He smiled. “He’s the best.”
You nodded, sighing in relief that he seemed to be feeling better. You smiled at Taehyung. “He’s certainly something.”
Taehyung smiled back, looking so happy that you had to look away. Being in a house with him was going to be challenging. It’s been forever and a day since you had to function around an extremely handsome man. It’s been you and Theo for so long. Now you had to find a new balance.
You turned your attention to the screen, unsure what to do or say around the new man in your life.
———
You tucked Theo in. “School tomorrow.”
He pouted for a second. “Okay. Will you and Tae-tae pick me up?”
“Yes, we will. And we’re going to have roast beef and mashed potatoes for dinner tomorrow.” You pressed a kiss to his forehead, then took your goodnight kiss, smiling as he giggled happily.
“I love roast beef,” He said, grabbing his stuffed rabbit and hugging it. “Goodnight, mommy, I love you.”
“I love you too. Now, Tae can read you one story. That’s it for tonight, okay?”
He nodded. “Yes mommy.”
“Goodnight, love.” You kissed his forehead again and got up.
He suddenly grabbed at you. “Mommy? You like Tae-tae, right?”
You tilted your head curiously. “I do. Why?”
“Like, a lot?”
You sat back down. “I suppose so.”
“Like as much as you loved my daddy?”
You flinched, and all amusement you had over the line of questioning died. “Theo…”
“Because I love him a lot, and he’s an adult, and he thinks you’re pretty and I bet he—”
“Theodore,” You whispered sternly.
He closed his mouth, looking up at you with big, sad eyes. “Yes mommy?”
Your mind raced, trying to figure out how to explain it to him in a way that he would understand. “You know how much I love you?”
“Beyond infinity,” He answered easily.
“I want you to be happy, and healthy, but…baby, did you get Taehyung because you wanted a father?” You asked. He’d never said a word about a father before, and rarely asked about his own father.
Theo nodded slowly. “Are you mad?”
“No, honey, I’m not mad. But I want you to understand that Taehyung and I probably won’t fall in love. Do you understand?”
He nodded, but he had tears in his eyes.
You sighed and pulled him into your arms. “It just…isn’t how that works.” You kissed his face gently a few times while he sniffled.
“Okay mommy,” He whispered, then looked up desperately. “But Taehyung is staying, right?!”
You laughed softly. “Of course. I’ll go tell him your ready for your story.” You tucked him back in. “Love you, baby.”
“Love you, mommy.”
Tears gone, crisis averted, you went out to the kitchen where Taehyung was finishing a snack. “He’s ready for his story.”
“I’m sorry,” He blurted, holding his hand in front of him.
“For?” You glanced around, expecting to see something broken since that’s how he was asking.
“Theo, the whole dad thing.”
You relaxed a little. “Oh, yeah. I guess he saw his friends all had both and decided he needed to as well. It’s okay. He loves you without the title of dad anyway. It’s good for him to have you around.”
He hugged you.
You were surprised, but you hugged back, having read that hybrids thrive with physical affection of any sort. To reject him could greatly upset his adaptation to your home. Besides, he smelled fantastic and it was kind of nice feeling strong arms around you. Made it feel a little less like you were holding the world on your own.
He hesitantly nuzzled your hair and cheek, he held you tighter. “You’re tired.”
You shrugged. “Labor of love, right? Emphasis on the labor. Have fun reading to him. I told him only one story.”
He nodded. “I’ll make sure he sleeps. You go sleep too.”
“Thanks, Taehyung.” You kissed his cheek, then turned and headed toward your room. You felt exhausted. You changed, and somehow managed to brush your teeth.
You didn’t make it under the covers, and your dreams…
You woke up feeling like you needed a drink, shaking a little and hopping into a cold shower (it wasn’t intentional).
You hurried to dress and go down to check the water heater, groaning and trying to figure out what the heck you were going to do now.
Then your phone alarm went off to tell you to wake up Theo.
You darted upstairs, only to find both of them already up and Taehyung helping Theo get a bowl of cereal.
Taehyung looked at you with a smile, then it faded slightly. “Good morning?”
“Uh, water heater is broken. Morning, baby.” You kissed Theo on the head and mouthed a ‘Thank you’ to Taehyung before rushing off to dry your hair and get ready for work before wrestling Theo into clothing for school. You had to tell him what was happening a day in advance so that he didn’t have a fit over the changes that came with the day, another reason it was so important for you to plan meals. Sure, he could get behind some spontaneous activities and changes, but most of the time he froze up and became a wall of stone.
He was already dressed when you came out, and he was waiting for you while talking about what they were doing in class with Taehyung.
You blinked, relaxing a bit. “You want to go in early, sweetie?”
He nodded. “I can help Mr. Jung! See you later, Tae-Tae!”
“Shoes,” You redirected the six-year-old toward the shoe rack. “Tae, feel free to do whatever. I should be back around one and then we can go pick up some more clothes for you and anything else you need.”
“Okay, I’ll be ready then, y/n.”
Your heart beat faster and harder at the way he said your name, then almost stopped as he bid an affectionate ‘see you later’ to your son.
Theo looked so peaceful in Taehyung’s arms. “Can we play catch when we get home tonight?”
“Sure,” Tae replied happily, then gave Theo a little kiss on the forehead. “Be good for your teacher.”
“Okay!” Theo took your hand and you both went out to the car.
You were still reeling a bit from the chaos of your morning, but not having to worry about getting Theo ready, and even getting him and yourself to school a little early set you up for a much better day. You could figure out the water heater issue tonight. Theo would need a bath, but you’d be lying if you said you hadn’t boiled water for a bath before.
————
Shopping with him was the worst idea you’d ever had. Especially clothes shopping.
It wasn’t that he picked expensive things. He was conscientious about the budget, even asking about it before, and he tended to grab cheaper items. He just also looked good in absolutely everything he put on. He knew how to put together an outfit and suddenly you felt like that mom that always looks so dated in the TV shows that desperately needs a makeover. He looked like he had stepped out of all of the latest fashion magazines. If anything, his animal features made it even better.
You were being out-fashioned by a man that was part Collie.
You focused on the linens that you needed to supplement the use of the spare bedroom, and the extra towels. You grabbed a few extra blankets as well, knowing that texture was everything to hybrids.
He came with a modest amount of items, with a happy smile. “Thanks, y/n. For getting these for me. It’ll be nice having more clothes.”
You nodded. “Of course, you’re part of our family now.” You examined the prices for twin-size sheets for Theo’s bed, remembering that one set had officially bit the dust when his foot went through it. Might as well get all of the necessities now while it was within your budget to do so.
“Still, thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
He carried the bags out to the car, insisting on doing it and keeping up a lively conversation about everything and nothing going. He was universally charming and it was hard to resist that adorable grin and enthusiastic words. He got you to tell him all about your life somehow, and about Theo’s father.
“I found out I was pregnant with Theo two weeks after burying his father. He never even knew. How do you tell a six year old that his father never knew or expected him, that his father hadn’t been excited about him because he never knew he would have a child? So I dance around it and say that his father would have loved him so much. That he would have been so proud of him. Like I have the authority to say what he would and wouldn’t have loved or been proud of.” You sighed, slumping in your seat a little as you both waited for school to end and Theo to run to the car.
“You’ve done really well with him, y/n. He’s so kind and intelligent.” He sighed, looking happy. “I’m really happy he picked me. It’s nice. I get to play with him and have fun, but I also get to help you take care of him. It’s really fulfilling. It helps me feel like I’m not just being a burden.”
“No, definitely not. If you hadn’t been there this morning it would have been a disaster zone. We both would have been late, and he probably would have his shirt on inside out, and it would have been a mess.”
“I fixed the water heater,” He said.
“What? How?” You sat up again, locking at him.
“It happened at Cedarbrook a couple weeks ago and I watched how the person fixed it. It was a really easy fix.”
You checked that off of the list of things you needed to take care of, the burden of responsibility easing up even more. “Thank you.”
He nodded happily. “Cold showers stink.”
“Oh yes.”
The car door opened and Theo climbed in.
“Mommy! Tae! Look what I did in art class!” He said, flinging himself onto the console with a drawing.
“That’s amazing, Theo!” You praised him, looking over the drawing. “We’ll put it on the fridge when we get home.”
He beamed at you.
Taehyung was grinning. “Is that me?”
Theo nodded with his whole body. “Of course! And that’s mommy, and that’s me, and up there in the clouds is my dad watching over all of us and being happy that we’re happy!”
You smiled, mentally making a note to send Mr. Jung a plate of the fudge that you knew he loved for helping Theo so much. He always managed to say just the right thing that made things easier on you when explaining things. Yeah, Hoseok had earned some fudge if he had managed to explain to your son something that just made you upset.
Theo dropped back into his seat, buckling up easily. “We’re still going to play catch when we get home?”
“Yup! Then we’ll clean up your room so that your mom will let us have pudding.”
“We have pudding?!” Theo froze with excitement.
“Yes we do. What else did you do in class today?” You quickly diverted his excitement.
“We’re learning a new song in music class, but I don’t like it. I miss Mr. Kim. I want him to come back. Mr. Jung gave me a new book to read!” He was starting to pull everything out of his backpack to find the new book.
“Why don’t you show it to us when we get home?” Taehyung suggested lightly. “What song are you learning?”
“On top of sketti,” Theo mumbled grumpily.
“On top of spaghetti, that’s a fun song.” You smiled at him in your rear-view mirror.
“No, it’s not.” Theo pouted, but you could see the smile hidden behind the pout.
“So, where’s Mr. Kim? Your music teacher?” Taehyung asked.
“I don’t know.”
“He’ll be back next week,” You reassured gently. “He just had some things happen with his family.”
“I don’t like Ms. Hannigan,” He pouted.
You figured she must have talked baby-talk to him. He hated that. You’d never talked like that with him, instead just talking like a normal human being. There were some days he was lucky you had the energy to get him dressed when he was learning to talk and you certainly weren’t about to expend more of your precious energy to talk to him like a baby. The result was that he had a hard time around any adult who was overly enthusiastic or fake. “How can you know if you like her? You’ve only had her for two classes.”
“She talks funny. Like she’s telling a silly story, but all the time.”
You sighed. “Just be patient, okay honey. She’s probably a very nice teacher. Some people are just different.”
Taehyung nodded, twisted in his seat to look back at Theo. “Sometimes they’re really nice they just don’t know how to talk to us yet or they want you to like them and they try a little too hard.”
Theo looked thoughtful for a moment. “Okay. I’ll be nice to her too.”
You parked the car, feeling warm and fuzzy. “You want a snack today?”
“Mmm, not today.”
You nodded and got out of the car, watching lovingly as Taehyung pulled Theo out.
Theo was wrapped around Taehyung’s neck and torso, grinning and giggling and Taehyung pretended to be affronted by this ‘attack’. It was loud and a little crazy, but you felt…
Peaceful.
They played outside for quite a while, then came in laughing and having fun and Theo ran to his room while Taehyung got some water for both of them.
You already had dinner in the oven without Theo getting underfoot, and were in comfortable clothes while you read a book you had tried reading for the past three months.
Taehyung wrapped his arms around your shoulders and neck. “He said he wanted to clean on his own.”
You laughed softly. “He does that.”
He nodded, then was quiet so you went back to reading, relaxing in his hold.
Then he kissed your cheek. “If I ever have a pup of my own, I’d want him to be just like Theo.”
You were frozen, heart racing almost as quickly as your mind at the small gesture of affection.
He chuckled deeply, gently nuzzling your neck. “I knew it. You do like me like that.” He moved around so he was beside you. He kissed your cheek again. “You’re shy. You’ve been alone for so long you don’t even know what to do with help. It adorable. You’re adorable. You’re beautiful.”
Your cheeks were burning, and you met his eyes hesitantly. “I barely know you.”
He leaned forward and kissed you gently. “Someone needs to take care of you. I saw that the moment you walked in.”
You shook your head. “I haven’t dated since long before Theo was born. This is a bad idea.”
“We’ll go slowly.” He kissed you again.
You sighed and let him kiss you. You had definitely thought about this. About him holding you. Wondered what it would be like to be kissed by him.
“I cleaned my room, mommy!” Theo called happily, his little feet pounding down the hall.
You and Taehyung naturally shifted away from each other.
“Good job, baby! Thank you for cleaning.” You welcomed him onto your lap, not wanting to think about what had just happened.
“Taehyung helped me catch better!” He flopped over so he was on both of your laps. He wiggled until he was comfortable. “Mommy?”
“Yeah?”
“Can I call Tae-tae my dad? Would my real dad mind?” He asked really quietly.
You took a deep breath, then swallowed and nodded. “If Taehyung is okay with that.”
Tae was grinning at you. “I’m okay with that. I’m here for keeps.”
You couldn’t believe it, but you knew it was true. You knew you were crazy for feeling like you knew him already. He was just so open and honest and…refreshing. Three days with him, and you already felt like he was a part of your life you never wanted to let go of. You wanted to pull him closer. You wanted him to hold you all the time.
“Why don’t we all cuddle up and watch a movie?” You suggested, looking into Taehyung’s eyes.
He pulled Theo into his arms, the kid cuddling up right away, and shifted next to you, putting an arm around you. He snuck a kiss to your cheek. “Sounds perfect to me.”
Theo made a contented sound, already half-asleep despite it not even being dinnertime yet.
Completely unaware that he was getting what he wanted.

Chapter Text
“You took on the project? Are you crazy?!” One of your coworkers asked.
You looked up at the man tiredly. “I wasn’t given much of a choice.”
He shook his head. “You’re taking on too much. I’ll talk to them.”
“Mr. Min, unless you want to make my job even harder, please refrain from confronting our boss. She’s already mad at me for saying my son is more important to me than this job. She’s made it very clear that this project determines whether I keep my raise or not.”
Yoongi groaned and dropped into the chair across from you again. He’d only been working in this branch of the company for a week and hadn’t caught up to the office politics yet.
Your phone rang, a very bad sign. You recognized Hoseok's number—Theo’s teacher.
“What happened?” You asked instead of saying hello.
“You’re going to have to come pick him up.” His voice was sympathetic.
You sighed. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
Yoongi watched you carefully as you ended the call. “Can’t your hybrid pick him up?” He guessed.
You shook your head. “I’ll be gone an hour, tops. I’ll use my lunch break. Just, don’t draw attention to my empty desk.”
He nodded. “Drive fast and take chances. I’ll cover for you if you run over.”
“You’re the best,” You grabbed your purse and keys, foregoing the jacket despite the cold weather as you rushed out the door.
You got to the school in ten minutes, and rushed to the principal’s office.
Theo looked up at you, pale and with tear tracks.
Hoseok stood up, pulling you back out into the hallway. “He’s been complaining of a headache all day, started feeling nauseous on the playground and someone blocked his way to the bathroom. He got into a fight with the kid, ended up puking all over him before either of them could actually hurt each other. They were teasing him about being sick.”
You sighed. “I’ll talk to him tonight. Do I need to sign anything or…”
He shook his head, patting your shoulder. “Just get him home. He’s been pretty miserable ever since snack time this morning.”
Guilt overwhelmed you. “He said he didn’t want to go to school today but he wouldn’t give me a reason.”
“I’ll keep a closer eye on him. I’ll also see where they are on the paperwork for Taehyung to be able to pick him up for you.”
“Thanks, hobi, I owe you.”
“I will collect one of these days,” He teased.
You opened the office door again, noticing now that Theo wasn’t in the clothing you sent him to school in. “Come on, buddy, I have to take you home and get back to work.”
“Sorry, mommy,” He murmured once you were both in the car.
“It’s okay, baby. You have to let me know when you have headaches though, baby. You know you’re always sick when you have headaches,” You spoke gently, despite the anxiety that was clawing at you after spending so much time at the school. You had to get back to work in twenty minutes.
“I didn’t think I would.” He was pouting a little.
“Taehyung will take care of you and I’ll be home as soon as I can, okay?”
“Yes, mommy.”
You pulled into the drive.
Taehyung appeared in the window, then was standing in the doorway, looking worried.
You got out and pulled Theo out of his carseat.
Tae was next to you in seconds. “Hey, what’s…oh, no, Theo! Headache?” He gently nuzzled the top of Theo’s head before picking him up. “I’ve got you, kiddo. We’ll put in a movie and I’ll help you do your school work when you feel better.”
Theo settled into Tae’s arms.
You kissed Theo’s head, then met Taehyung’s eyes. “I’ll be home as soon as I—”
“I’ve got him. Just get home when you can. Go, before you’re late.” Taehyung nudged you toward the car. “I’ve got him.”
You nodded, driving away as soon as you could. You got back to your desk without having eaten, exactly an hour after you left.
Yoongi looked astonished. “You actually only took an hour. Did you eat?”
You shook your head. “No time.”
“What happened?”
“He gets migraines, threw up on a kid who stood between him and the bathroom,” You answered, quickly getting to work so that when your boss came in she wouldn’t be able to yell at you.
“Yikes,” Yoongi grimaced. “Is he on some sort of prescription for his headaches?”
“They didn’t help. One made him more nauseous, another made him dizzy, and the other just put him to sleep. He’s seen three different neurologists. I’m still paying the bills from the last useless appointment. MRI’s cost a lot of money, by the way.” You quickly started typing up one of the reports in the stack you had to process.
“Relax a little, she went out to lunch about ten minutes ago and I processed one of those on your computer just in case you ran over. I just sat back in my seat when you came in like a tornado. Also…is that a picture of Theo?”
You nodded.
“He’s adorable.”
“Thanks.”
“He takes after you a lot,” Yoongi commented.
You smiled at him finally. “You’re distracted and don’t want to work. I get it. Just ask the question that you want to ask.”
“Who was his father?” Yoongi asked, leaning on his desk. He looked genuinely curious, but also sympathetic. Like he was asking cause he cared.
You pulled out a photo frame from the bottom drawer of your desk and set it on his desk, not answering verbally. “He never knew. Besides, Theo basically decided that Taehyung is his father now so whatever makes him happiest.”
Yoongi swallowed. “I know his brother.”
You froze, then met his gaze.
He looked pretty shaken. “His younger brother and I…he’s one of my roommates. Been friends since college. Jimin.”
You felt sick. “He…never talked about having a brother…” He never talked about any of his family. You two had been so happy together, but he had made it clear that he didn’t want to talk about his family. That his family was not a part of his life anymore, or that he wasn’t talking to them.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to blindside you…” Yoongi got up and came over when he saw how badly you were freaking out. “I won’t tell him. Not unless you tell me it’s okay. I get it, your family is just how you want it. I’m not going to mess that up for you. It’s okay, y/n. It’s okay.” He hugged you when he realized you were panicking, gently rubbing your back. “Just breathe.”
This was something that had scared you, more than raising Theo alone. That there was family out there that might try and take Theo away from you. It was irrational. You were his mother, a good mother. Not even grandparents or siblings could take Theo away and they didn’t even know that he existed.
Yoongi was confirming it, even now. “It’s okay. I won’t tell them about Theo.” He rubbed your back for a couple more seconds before pulling away. “I might cave and tell my other roommate just so I won’t have to go crazy alone. You know, bring someone else down with me.”
You managed to choke out a laugh.
“But…” He sighed, pulling away. “Jimin…it would make him so happy to know that there’s a piece of his brother out there. He wouldn’t tell his parents. Not if you asked him not to. Just consider it. Or you can meet him without us telling him who you are, and you can decide for yourself. With me as a buffer.”
You wiped your eyes carefully, breathing carefully to calm down. “Thanks.”
“Yeah, it’s my fault you got upset in the first place.”
You two returned to working, but your mind was only partially present.
Your eye caught the clock around the time that Theo was normally getting out of school. An idea manifested. “Saturday evening…I was thinking of having Theo’s teacher over for dinner. You all should come as well. I’ll give you the details when they’re tacked down.”
Yoongi looked surprised. “Are you sure?”
You nodded. “Don’t say anything until I confirm with Hobi, and make sure Theo won’t freak out. Or Taehyung.”
“Definitely check with the hybrid. He’s a dog-hybrid, right? They can be territorial.”
You nodded again.
“I’ll keep my mouth shut until I hear from you.”
You went back to work, putting it all out of your mind.
You called Hoseok on the way home to see if he’d even be interested.
“Home cooking? Are you serious or are you teasing me?” Hoseok laughed.
“Well, there’s more to it than just you coming over for dinner so I can thank you for all the trouble I’ve been putting you through. You and Namjoon, who you should invite as well. Um, it’s also one of my coworkers and his roommates.”
“Okay…why?”
You took a deep breath. “Theo’s dad…one of Yoongi’s roommates is the younger brother of Theo’s dad.”
It was quiet on the other end. “Whoa.”
“Yeah. I still have to talk to Theo and Taehyung about it, but I wanted to see if you were at least free for dinner.”
“Yeah. I’m free. And I will never say no to edible food. Neither will Namjoon. Just let us know the time.”
“Thanks, Hobi. You’re an incredible friend and ally.”
“Well, I have been thrown up on by your kid a couple times, so if I haven’t left by now…”
You laughed at that. “You’re a saint. I have to go before Taehyung starts worrying about me sitting in the car.”
“Talk to you soon.”
“Yeah,” You hung up and got out of the vehicle, heading up to the house.
Taehyung opened the door for you, looking curious. “Who were you talking to?”
You rolled your eyes. “Hi, I’m great, how was your day? How’s Theo?”
Taehyung ducked in and kissed you quickly, then smiled at you. “He’s asleep. His head started feeling worse so he lay in bed with an ice pack and I think the lavender actually made him worse this time.”
“He must be sensitive to smell this time,” You sighed.
He was frowning at you. “Were you crying? Who’s smell is on you? Who touched you?”
“Tae, a little quieter,” You said, glancing behind him. “I had a bit of a freak-out at work, Yoongi was just helping me calm down. It’s totally platonic between us, and he’s the one that set up the freak-out so he felt obligated to help me calm down. We need to talk, though.”
“About?” He hugged you, wiggling and rubbing so that you’d smell like him.
“I was thinking about cooking dinner for some guests on Saturday. Hoseok and Namjoon, Theo’s teachers, to thank them for all their help the past couple of years, months, weeks, days. Yoongi and his two roommates.” You double-checked what you wanted to say before continuing, noting how still he had gone. “Yoongi…he saw the picture of Theo’s father and recognized him. One of his roommates is the younger brother of Theo’s father and…”
“Really?” Taehyung pulled away, looking at you with big eyes, mouth agape. “I thought…”
“I didn’t know. His father never talked about his family, and made it pretty clear that he never would talk about them. I stopped asking. I’m not telling Theo just yet. I wanted to see what Jimin was like first before acknowledging it. Besides, from what I understand they’re all bachelors so it’s probably been a while since they had a good meal and they’re all around your age, so maybe they can be your friends. Have someone to talk to or hang out with every now and then. Hoseok and Namjoon have wanted to meet you anyway.”
He was grinning at you. “Sounds fun.”
“Really? You’re not going to get overprotective or anything?”
“Nope. I mean, I’m not going to let any of them cling to you, but I’m curious about them. Besides, I live here. I’m Theo’s dad and I get to kiss you. They don’t.” He looked a little smug about that.
“Think Theo will be okay with it?”
“Sure, just make sure they all know that they have to play at least one game with him.” He shrugged. “Since it’s here, they’ll know that you have a kid. It’ll be fine. I’m here to mediate.”
You kissed his cheek. “You’re a God-send.”
He grinned so big his eyes closed, allowing you to escape so you could finally change out of your uncomfortable work clothes.
Yeah. The dinner would be fine. You had Taehyung, Hoseok, and Yoongi as buffers.
You texted Yoongi and Hoseok with the time and address, as well as the game condition for Theo.
They both replied within minutes.
Now you just had to cook for six men, yourself, and Theo, and make sure that Theo knew of the plans.
Piece of cake.
————
“Mr. Jung! Mr. Kim!” Theo slammed into Hoseok’s leg first, then hopped to Namjoon’s. “Hi!”
“Hey, kiddo, missed you in music class on Thursday.” Namjoon ruffled Theo’s hair with a grin.
“Yeah, I got sick again,” Theo scuffed the floor, then brightened up and took both of their hands, pulling them into the house. “Tae-Tae! These are my teachers!”
Taehyung greeted them, a little shyly, but overall friendly. He was familiar with their scents from picking them up on yours and Theo’s clothing.
You stayed by the door because you’d seen Yoongi’s car pulling into the driveway, and waved as he got out of the car.
Two more men got out of the car as well, one wearing a hooded jacked, and the other…
You recognized that leather coat.
You waved them right inside. “Come on in. Hey, Yoongi.”
“Hey, this is Jimin and this is Seokjin. You said your hybrid was friendly, right?”
“He is,” You paused for a moment, then realized why they were asking.
Seokjin was a hybrid as well, ears back somewhat nervously.
“You still should have told me, though,” You rolled your eyes at Yoongi. “It’ll be fine.”
“Right, well, guys, this is Y/n.”
“Thank you for having us,” Seokjin said politely.
Jimin just smiled, nodding his agreement to the sentiment.
“Of course. Come on in. The other’s are in the living room and kitchen.” You led the way through to the living room.
Hoseok looked up when they all came in, curious.
“Hoseok, Namjoon, Taehyung, Theo: This is my coworker Yoongi, and his roommates Seokjin and Jimin.”
Taehyung darted up to Seokjin with a grin. “Hi!”
Seokjin smiled back, chuckling a bit. “Hi.”
Jimin chuckled as they both sniffed at each other. “See, it’s fine, Yoongi-hyung.”
Theo was looking at them with curiosity and excitement, bouncing in place. “Hi!”
Jimin grinned at him. “Hey. How old are you?”
“I’m six!” Theo replied proudly.
“Really?” Jimin replied just as excitedly, but there was a slight sadness in his eyes.
Crap.
You glanced questioningly at Yoongi.
He shook his head slightly. “It smells amazing in here.”
“It really does. How long must we endure the torment?” Hoseok asked dramatically.
“Another fifteen minutes.” You headed behind the counter.
Namjoon sighed. “It’ll be worth it. Good cooking. Home cooking. And we’ll do the dishes, y/n. Right, Hoseok.”
“No,” You replied. “Hoseok is here because I owe him about ten-thousand if he does the dishes then I don’t even get to take it down by one.”
“Home cooking counts for about a hundred favors,” Hoseok informed you gravely.
“Mommy’s cooking is the best,” Theo chimed in.
Taehung nodded his agreement, pulling Theo into his lap on the floor. “Definitely.”
Yoongi joined you in the kitchen. “Can I help with anything? We should have offered to bring a dessert or something.”
“Could you mash the potatoes? I’ve had to pick Theo up a couple times today and my arms aren’t having it.”
He nodded, quickly taking over for you. “I didn’t tell Jimin, I promise. I haven’t spoken a word of it. I told them you invited me because I covered for you at work and I complained one too many times about how our cooking is sub-par.”
You sighed, somewhat relieved. “At least that’s not too far from true.”
“Exactly. What was it you told me? A good lie holds some truth in it.”
You nodded.
Seokjin and Taehyung were sitting side-by-side, tails wagging and talking somewhat animatedly with their ears perked.
“I’m so glad they get along. I should have told you that Jin was a hybrid sooner. I just…I forget about it sometimes. My parents got him for me when I was seventeen. He’s the reason I went to college in the first place. He could attend classes with me and get a job. Not a great job, but he’s happy that he can work. I’m so used to treating him like a human that I honestly forgot that it might not be a good idea to bring another dog hybrid into a home where there already was one. What kind is Taehyung?”
“Collie.”
“Ah, well, that explains some of it.”
“They’re very social dogs,” You agreed. “He hasn’t been able to socialize a lot. I was hoping this would be good for him as well.”
Jimin was now part of Taehyung and Jin’s conversation, and they appeared to be including Theo who was surprisingly still in Taehyung’s lap.
Hoseok dove right into the conversation as well, somehow dragging Namjoon in.
You watched carefully.
Theo suddenly stood up and spun toward you. “Mommy, what was my daddy’s name?”
You froze.
“Hey, you told me Taehyung was your daddy,” Hoseok teased lightly, tickling the kid.
Theo giggled. “No, the one that died!”
It got really quiet as everyone waited tensely for your answer.
Hoseok, Yoongi and Taehyung were looking at you desperately nervous.
Theo was looking at you with curiosity.
“Come here, baby,” You beckoned with a forced smile.
He scrambled over to you, happily sitting on the counter when you helped him up onto it.
“Why do you ask, baby?” You asked as quietly as you could.
He wiggled a little in place. “Because he looks like the picture you showed me.”
“Jimin isn’t your father.”
“But he looks like him.”
“Maybe a little,” You conceded and kissed his forehead and whispered the name that you didn’t want the others to hear. “Okay, baby?”
He nodded, smiling at you. “Okay. Mommy, are you okay? You looked sad.” He touched beside your eyes then rubbed his nose against yours adorably.
You pressed kisses to his face playfully. “I’m fine, baby. Why don’t you go wash your hands for dinner? Milk or water with dinner?”
“Water,” He chirped, wrapping his arms around your neck so you would carry him at least a little ways before setting him onto the floor. Then he scurried to the bathroom.
The whole room seemed to breathe a sigh of a relief.
“Does he normally blindside you with loaded questions like that?” Namjoon asked, looking stressed.
“Thankfully, no.”
“What even brought that up?” Seokjin’s eyes were huge, and his ears back from the increase in stress in the room. He must be susceptible to it all.
You opened your mouth to respond, but Theo had come back in and heard the question.
“He looks a little like my dad,” Theo said, pointing at Jimin. “I couldn’t remember what his name was so I asked Mommy.”
Jin whimpered, shrinking against Taehyung as the tension spiked again.
Jimin just looked confused.
But Namjoon was looking at you with big eyes.
And Jin seemed to have made the connection as well.
Theo looked uncomfortable. “What’s wrong? Mommy, did I do something wrong?”
You swallowed hard. “No, Theo. Food’s ready, everyone!”
Jimin looked worried, but everyone hurried to the table.
Taehyung scooped Theo up with a silly sound.
Giggles filled the air instead and both Hoseok and Jin jumped into the silliness as if to divert everyone’s attention.
But Jimin caught your elbow, startling you.
“I’m sorry,” He said softly. “If I had known I looked like him…”
“You don’t. Not that much. It’s okay. I didn’t even know that Theo looked at the picture that often.”
“Could I see it later?” He asked.
You looked away, meeting Taehyung’s eyes.
He tilted his head, then nodded encouragingly.
You looked back at Jimin. “Sure. After dinner.”
He nodded and quickly sat down at the table with everyone.
Somehow the meal passed pleasantly, the conversation never getting dull.
Theo was ecstatic and Taehyung seemed to be getting along with all of them really well.
It was nice.
Taehyung hugged you from behind when everyone got up, following Theo over to whatever game he chose. “You okay?”
You nodded. “Not in front of Theo, Tae,” You whispered.
He nodded into your shoulder and released you, grateful you told him instead of pushing him away. He impulsively pecked your cheek before practically skipping over to the others.
You rolled your eyes, going to your room and grabbing the picture frame, turning to see that Jimin had followed you.
“I thought it might throw Jin-hyung into a panic attack if the picture was brought out there,” Jimin explained. “He’s had a rough week. Having good food always helps him, and he really does love Theo. It’s hard not to love the kiddo.” He smiled genuinely. “Sorry, if I upset you. You don’t have to show me the picture.”
You shook your head. “You have a right to know.”
He looked confused, until he took the picture frame from you. He stared at the photo of you with his brother, then at you, then back at the picture. “That’s…”
“Your brother. Yeah. Yoongi recognized him from the photo I keep at the office. I didn’t know…I didn’t know anything about his family. He wouldn’t talk about them. When he died…I knew he was in contact with his family, since his body had to be sent to someone. Since I wasn’t the one arranging a funeral,” You said softly, shaking your head and looking at the floor. “I asked Yoongi not to say anything until I…met you myself.”
Jimin sat down on the chair by your vanity. He looked stunned, tracing the photo, then his face transformed into some form of fear and relief. “Theo’s his kid? He’s my nephew?”
You nodded, hugging your knee as you sat on the chest at the end of your bed.
“You were the woman that my brother couldn’t stop talking about, but would never name,” He breathed out with something akin to a sob. “He loved you so much. He wanted me to meet you, but then…he died…and I didn’t know…He had a kid?”
“He didn’t know,” You whispered. “I didn’t know. He died before I even found out.”
Jimin was in tears, and suddenly Jin was poking his head in, looking worried.
You gestured toward Jimin and Jin immediately wrapped his arms around the other man, making soft comforting sounds.
Jimin looked up with a smile. “Does he know?”
“Theo doesn’t know. Not yet. But pretty much everyone else does now, right?”
Jin nodded. “Figured it out before dinner.”
Taehyung poked his head in, then was gone just as quick.
Jimin looked somberly at you. “I understand if you don’t want…but…I’d really like to get to know him. Please.”
You rested your cheek against your knee for a moment, thinking about it. You got a good impression from him, and Theo had actually let Jimin help him at the table instead of insisting on someone he’d known longer. And Taehyung and him had already started talking about hanging out before the end of dinner.
“Okay. I mean, I don’t want you alone with him…not for a while, but we can tell him. You can get to know him.” You spoke softly, uncertain if this was a good decision or not.
He grinned through tears. He looked at Jin. “He had a kid. He had a kid.” He curled into Jin’s arms.
Jin gestured that it’d be a while until Jimin calmed down and that you should head back out.
You nodded. “We’ll tell him when you’ve calmed down. I should get back out there before Theo comes back here. Don’t loot my bedroom.”
Jimin giggled and Jin cracked a smile.
You left them to pull together, then went out and found that Theo had the other four men involved in a game of Candyland, though it was pretty obvious that none of them were playing the way it was supposed to be played.
But Theo was beyond happy, grinning from Taehyung’s lap. He was starting to look like he was calming down. Which meant that he’d be ready to sleep in about an hour and a half.
You sat down and Theo quickly switched to your lap.
“They’re all cheating,” He told you happily, immediately refocusing on the game.
You smiled and stroked his hair before pressing a kiss to his head.
He relaxed into your arms. “Where’s Mr. Jimin and Mr. Jin?”
“They’ll be out in a couple minutes,” You answered softly.
Taehyung took your hand, eyes examining you carefully.
“How’d he take it?” Yoongi asked, his tone uninterested so it went right past Theo.
“I need to replace the box of tissues in my room,” You answered.
He nodded. “Figured when both Jin and Taehyung went to check on you.”
Taehyung just grinned and squeezed your hand. “Telling him?”
You nodded, relying on his hand to keep calm. There was no telling how Theo would react to it all. Telling him suddenly that he had an uncle. His father’s brother.
It could upset the delicate balance of your life.
Taehyung and Hoseok shifted closer to you, seeming to sense your nervousness.
Taehyung rested his head on your shoulder.
Namjoon and Theo were playfully debating over a rule in the game when Jimin and Jin rejoined everyone.
Theo was more than happy to come up with a rule to let both of them back into the game, effectively kicking Yoongi out of the game.
Yoongi grinned and laughed, surprised at how boldly Theo ejected him from the game. “He’s good.”
You shook your head, amused at Theo playing a game without the rules. When he played with you he usually at least tried to play by the rules (you just didn’t enforce all of them because he doesn’t understand them all the time).
Theo won the game (big shock), and he happily cheered for himself, flopping across yours and Taehyung’s laps.
Then he sat up, turning to look at you. “Was my dad good at playing games?”
“He was good at making it fun,” You answered, smiling. The most innocent game you two had played was Apples to Apples and you two had found ways of making it dirty. “We were usually too busy laughing to actually play the game.” That was true at least.
He looked a little disappointed at the answer for once.
“But you know, Jimin would know better,” You said softly, tilting Theo’s face up to yours.
He looked confused. “How would he know?”
“How much do I love you?” You asked, rubbing your nose against his.
“Beyond infinity,” He giggled, wiggling in your hold.
“I didn’t tell you something so I could protect you.”
He smiled and nodded. “Okay. What?” He looked so trusting and it made everything easier.
“I found out a couple days ago that your father had a younger brother, Jimin. I wanted to meet him myself before I told you, but Jimin is your uncle.”
His eyes were huge.
“So, while I don’t know a lot about your father, Jimin probably knows just about everything.”
Theo looked at Jimin, looking astonished. “Everything?”
Jimin nodded excitedly. “Just about.”
Taehyung wrapped his arms around you, smiling as he watched.
“Did he play soccer? Do I look like him? Did he like cartoons? What was his favorite color? Mine’s blue!” He was bouncing in place, as he asked questions rapid-fire.
Jimin was just grinning and laughing a little, trying to keep up with the questions to answer them.
When Theo finally seemed to run out of questions, he looked at you with awe. “I have an uncle! Daddy, I have an Uncle!” He dropped into Taehyung’s lap.
Taehyung turned a bit red, but quickly wrapped Theo in a tight embrace. “That’s great, Theo.”
Jimin was looking at Theo with so much love. That look…that made him look like his older brother. He met your gaze, and just nodded.
Meanwhile Taehyung was laughing silently. “He’s asleep.”
You dropped back against the chair behind you. “Oh thank God.”
Hoseok laughed softly. “It’s been a crazy night for you guys. Put him to bed. We’ll do the dishes. You won’t owe me, or Namjoon.”
“We’ll head out,” Yoongi said, making sure Jin and Jimin were in agreement. “I’ll see you at work on Monday.”
You nodded, smiling at them.
Taehyung carried Theo to his bed after murmuring a goodbye to the others.
Jin touched your hand. “Thank you for having us. This was really great.” He looked pretty worn out, and you guessed his heightened empathy he’d been put through the wringer. He headed for the door, only to get intercepted by Taehyung who bear-hugged him with a wagging tail.
Yoongi patted your shoulder. “The food was great.”
“Glad you liked it.”
Which left you and Jimin.
“Thank you,” He said softly. “Having a piece of my brother…it means so much.”
You nodded, looking at the floor. “It’ll be good for him. Have some more family. Have a connection to his father. He doesn’t need it, not really, but someday he’d want it. Besides, after you’ve been around for a while I can pawn him off on you while I take a nap.”
He grinned and then hugged you briefly. “I can’t wait. I’ll help Tae teach him how to play soccer!” He then hopped after Jin and Yoongi.
You turned toward the two men in the kitchen. “Saints, both of you.”
“You’re the saint for feeding us. We need to do this more.” Hoseok hugged you tightly. “Let Tae help you relax tonight,” He whispered.
You pressed your face into his shoulder, finding comfort in one of your oldest friends. You’d gone to college with him, and he was the one who helped you get through being a single mom. He was basically your brother.
You heard a soft, choked, growl and turned toward Taehyung.
He looked pouty.
Hoseok chuckled. “See you Monday, y/n.”
Namjoon hugged your shoulders, but avoided anything more. “I’ll see you eventually. Hoseok should call in more of those favors you owe him. We’re living on takeout.”
“That’s because Namjoon burned the pot instead when he boiled water,” Hoseok teased. “And I can make instant noodles. Besides, we’re all busy. And I don’t really mind whether those favors ever get called in.”
“We’ll have to make dinners more regular,” You told them, rubbing their arms. “See you both soon.”
They nodded, saying goodbye to Taehyung, and went out the door.
Taehung was on you in seconds, holding you tightly. “Mine. Mine, mine, mine.”
You squeaked. “Taehyung!”
He ignored you and scooped you up, carrying you into your room, closing the door behind him. “Mine. Need to—ugh!” He dropped you onto the bed, and then shoved the chair Jimin had sat in into the closet. He ran out of the room.
You blinked in concern, ready to send a mayday text to Hoseok, who was surely not gone yet.
Taehyung came back with three blankets from his room and used one to stuff against the bottom of the closet door, then threw the other two over you before crawling onto the bed and forcefully cocooning you in the two blankets before cuddling up with you under the comforter. “Mine.” He kissed your face and neck.
You swallowed. “Um, Taehyung, I haven’t even brushed my teeth and I’m wearing jeans…my uncomfortable ones.”
He growled, but it sounded pouty. “But I was so good, the whole time! I let them touch you and I let them get their scent on you when I didn’t want it there and—”
“Taehyung,” You interrupted. “They’re gone. Besides, didn’t we already establish who I kiss?”
“Me.”
“Hoseok is like a brother to me. The others are friends and we’ve come out of the past where a woman would marry her deceased man’s brother. And no-doubt Jin could tell that you consider me to be yours since he limited his physical interactions.” You wiggled, trying to free yourself. “Not to mention this is a little extreme!”
“I wouldn’t have to be extreme if you would just let me love you always,” He pouted as he held you still.
“You know why I can’t.” You sighed, giving in since he was much stronger than you and it had been a day.
“It’s what he wants, though,” Taehyung murmured softly, gently, lovingly.
“And if it doesn’t work out between us then—”
“You think too much. Who says it won’t?” He kissed you then. “Look, I’m serious about you. I know it scares you, being into someone, but I’m not going anywhere. Let’s face it, you adopted me for him but he wanted me for you. Did you know that hybrids have this instinct about compatibility? They know if a mate will be a life-long one by scent, and brief observation.”
“I didn’t know that,” You replied, tired and uncomfortable. You just wanted to change into pajamas, maybe have a good cry, and sleep in tomorrow morning.
He finally released you, sitting both of you up so he could look you in the eye. “I know it’s you. I’m just waiting for you to know it too.” He leaned in and kissed you.
“It’s been a long night, Tae,” You whispered, choking up. Your eyes burned and filled unexpected ly.
He helped you up and unwrapped you, then he got your pajamas and set them on the bed before leaving the room with a soft promise to be right back.
You changed, still upset and tearing up for the stupidest reasons.
He came back into the room with a soft knock and his pillow, wearing his own pajamas. He guided you into the bed, covering you up with your regular blankets, and then got in on the other side. He cuddled up to you, gently brushing the stupid tears from your face. “It’s okay. It’ll be okay. We’ll make it okay.”
You sighed, letting yourself relax under his touch. “I don’t even know why I’m crying.”
“That’s okay too,” He rested his forehead against yours. “We have the night, and tomorrow for you to wind down.”
“Just to start it all over again on Monday,” You murmured, squeezing your eyes shut.
He let out a sympathetic whimper and pulled you fully into his embrace, pressing his lips to yours. He lingered in the gentle kiss, then barely a second after that kiss ended, he kissed you again. Firm, and with just a hint of passion.
You met his eyes, blinking slowly.
He shifted toward you, kissing you again, deeper. More. “The door is locked. He’s fast asleep. Let me show you. Let me take away your loneliness. I told you we’d go slow, and we have been. But I also told you that I would take care of you. I’ll take care of you.” He pressed kisses to your neck.
You took a deep breath and then slid your fingers into his hair, remembering that night. You’d felt so certain. Hesitant, but certain. Until this week you’d still felt certain.
“It’s his memory, right? Theo’s father? I’m sure all of this has felt like peeling a scab off.”
“No, honestly, even talking about him…it doesn’t hurt that much anymore. It hurts, but it’s more of a sentimental hurt and less of a ‘I can’t say your name without crying’. I had to move past my grief quickly. I was pregnant. Theo was my miracle, a little piece of his father left here. I’m okay with that. But I used to be so scared that his family would come looking and find out Theo existed and try to take him away from me. That was the first thing that came to mind when Yoongi told me about Jimin. ‘All of my fears could come true’. That’s what I thought, and I knew it was irrational. There was no way for them to know about Theo because I hadn’t.”
“Did Hoseok ever meet Theo’s father?”
“Twice, never for more than an hour or two and they only actually talked the one time. The other Hoseok was busy trying to impress someone.” You smiled and shook your head at the memory.
“What was the last thing you said to him?” He asked in a whisper.
“ ‘Tell Brody that if he makes you late for our date I’ll staple his tongue to the bathroom door and then light his house on fire.’ Then I waved and blew him a kiss before I got in my car. He was laughing and walking toward his own car when I saw him last.”
“And when you found out he died?”
“He was late. I was dressed up for our date, waiting for him. He wasn’t answering his phone. I was getting ready to call Brody, when the doorbell rang. Brody insisted on being the one to tell me. He had just been released from the hospital. He stood in my doorway, leaning on his crutches, and crying. He didn’t really need to say it, it was obvious something bad had happened and seeing him beat up and crying…what else could it have been for him to come in person instead of calling?”
“How much later did you find out about being pregnant again?”
“Two weeks after he had been buried. Brody told me when the funeral was, and he said he’d take me, but…I couldn’t bring myself to go. I didn’t want to meet his family since he had always avoided talking about them. Brody put a picture of us in for me. I haven’t talked to him in a while. We usually only talk on the anniversary of that day. And he calls on Theo’s birthday. He got a really good job, but he’s pretty far away now.” You sighed and wiggled so that his head was just above yours, and you could tuck into his neck.
He rubbed your back soothingly, relaxing completely. “Can we cuddle more? It’s lonely in my room.” He kissed the top of your head.
You nodded, eyes closing tiredly. The way he touched you…
You felt more comfortable than you had ever felt with any man. Including Theo’s father.
You pulled away and met his eyes. “Theo’s going over to a friends house next Friday.”
He looked confused, then his eyes widened before he smiled a little. “I’ll order us dinner. I can’t cook very well or I would.”
You kissed him gently, then looked at him while biting your lip. “I’ll wear something nice.”
His hand slid to your neck, then his finger caught the roots of your hair. At first you thought he was going to pull you into another kiss, but he guided your head back to the crook of his neck instead and wiggled until he was comfortable. “Goodnight, y/n.”
You smiled, closing your eyes. “Goodnight, Taehyung. Love you.”
He held you tightly, even as you realized what words slipped out of your mouth. “Love you too.”

Chapter Text
Theo pouted a bit. “Will he be back to read me a bedtime story?”
“I don’t know, honey,” you replied, looking over his shoulder at the homework he was working on. “Do you need help with this?”
He nodded, going through one problem as far as he could and then obviously guessing at how to continue.
You explained it to him again, grateful it was an easy subject, not telling him exactly what to do next but trying to guide him to find the answer within his own knowledge. You knew he knew how to do it, Hoseok had been telling you about how good Theo had been doing in this topic. You figured he was probably just a little tired and distracted.
His face lit up when you told him that he was right, and then hugged your neck. “Thank you, mommy.”
You pressed a kiss to his head. “You’re always welcome, baby. Dinner will be ready in a bit. Do you want to finish homework before or after dinner?”
“Before. I can do it, mommy.” He grinned up at you, then went back to work with the tip of his tongue sticking out of his mouth as he concentrated.
You felt really proud of him, working so hard on his homework, learning so well. Your baby was growing up.
Oh god, your baby was growing up.
You kept glancing at him as you finished preparing dinner, watching the way his brow furrowed with concentration. How the tip of his tongue stuck out the corner of his mouth when he hit a particularly hard part. Then the way he beamed at you and waved the paper when he had finished.
“I did it, Mommy!”
“Good job, Theo. Go wash up. We can eat at the bar tonight.”
“Yes!” He hopped off of his chair and raced off to do as you had asked.
You smiled after him and then plated up dinner.
He came racing back in making a whooshing sound like he was flying. “Hey Mom? When can I play with Uncle Jimin again?”
“He’s coming over this weekend to play soccer with you and Taehyung.”
He grinned. “Yay! I like uncle Jimin. He’s fun. He tells me lots of stories about my Appa.”
“Appa?”
He nodded. “Uncle Jimin says that’s what he and Appa called their dad. So, I thought I could call him my Appa since Uncle Jimin said that Appa probably would have taught me to call him Appa.”
You bent and kissed the top of his head. “That sounds like a very special connection to him.”
He grinned up at you, then hugged your legs before scrambling into his seat at the bar. “Mr. Jung said that I could be his helper after school tomorrow and that we were having a sleepover at his house with Mr. Kim.”
“You are. I have something for work and Tae had some work as well, so we thought you might like playing with Mr. Jung instead of being bored around here.”
He bounced a little. “I don’t mind! But the sleepover will be fun! Mr. Jung is awesome and Mr. Kim said we could do music-y stuff!”
“That does sound like fun. You want me to cut up your chicken or do you want to try?”
“I’ll try first.” He took the plate. “Thank you!”
You sat down beside him, looking over his math homework like you always did. You didn’t know how well you’d fare helping him with his homework as he got older, but you figured if he struggled you could always take him to a tutor that knew what they were doing. For now, though, you were happily able to assist him and help him understand.
As for the work both you and Taehyung had, well, it was more like the two of you were working on your relationship.
You flinched when the front door slammed open. “If I yell, run out the back door and go to Mrs. Dribak’s,” you instructed Theo quietly
He nodded, eyes huge.
You went into the entry cautiously, then inhaled sharply at the sight before you before turning on your heel. “Theo, go eat in your room. Everything’s okay.”
He nodded, taking his plate and hopping from the barstool, trudging to his room.
You went back to the entry and a sheepish looking Taehyung.
“Sorry,” he slurred. “Jinnie can really drink.”
“And you, obviously, cannot.” You grabbed his arm and pulled him to his feet. “Go clean yourself up. I’ll clean this up.”
“Sorry.”
“Oh, you will be,” You promised.
His ears went back and he stumbled off to the bathroom with a slight whimper.
Jimin cleared his throat. “Sorry, he’s pretty lightweight. Especially compared to Jin. I have them in my car right now.”
You looked at the puke on the floor. “I’ll handle it. Get them home. Pour coffee down their throats. You ever show up like this and I revoke visitation.”
His eyes widened. “Y/n…”
“I don’t want Theo around this, Jimin. You know why. Go. I have a mess to clean up.”
He nodded, looking away. “Right. See you.”
You closed the door and got your cleaning supplies, grateful that after having a kid you didn’t really have a gag reflex anymore.
Once you were done with that, you checked on Taehyung (still puking in the bathroom) and then went to Theo’s room.
He was sitting at his desk, coloring but looking up anxiously as you slipped in.
“It’s okay, honey. Your uncle brought Taehyung home because he had something that made him sick to his stomach. I didn’t want you to get sick from the smell.” You stroked his hair, watching him relax a bit.
“Is he okay?”
“He will be, but right now he’s feeling pretty crummy and he’s going to have a really bad headache tomorrow.”
“Like the ones I get?”
“A little, except I might get upset with him. He knew it would make him sick and still consumed it.”
“What does consume mean?”
“To eat or drink, another word for that would be ingest,” You explained, watching as he silently sounded out both words, smiling when he looked up at you with big questioning eyes. His father’s eyes. Bright and lively. “Ingest is spelled I-N-G-E-S-T.”
His tongue peeked out between his lips as he wrote it down. “I bet Aaron has never heard these words. Can I practice using them? He said I wasn’t as smart as him.”
You hummed. “Is he picking on you?”
“No, he just talks a lot. I can handle it. I know I did better on my tests than he did, but I didn’t say anything to him. Daddy told me that Aaron needs to feel smarter than the rest of us because he’s hurting. So I’m not going to say anything about it, I’ll just use good words and hope that maybe he’ll stop talking so much around me.”
You smiled a little. “Just let your teachers know if things get worse, okay?”
“Yes ma’am. Does that mean I can practice using the words?”
“Yeah, you can. Want me to take your plate?”
He nodded. “Thank you, mommy. I’m going to brush my teeth and read in bed so you can take care of him better.”
You kissed his waiting lips. “I’ll be back to tuck you in at bedtime.”
He grinned up at you. “Okay. You take care of daddy.”
You kissed his forehead again, then headed out and down the hall to check on Taehyung.
He was curled in the fetal position on the bathroom floor, an almost silent whimper emanating from him. His head turned toward you as you came in. “Hi…”
You sighed, crouching beside him and sitting him up. “Never again.”
He met your gaze, looking apologetic.
“I mean it, Tae.”
“We were just—”
“Theo’s father died because of a drunk driver,” You told him, getting a cold wash cloth and wiping his face in the following silence. “The other driver survived, while Theo’s father and Brody took all of the injuries. I’m surprised Jimin can even be around drinking. I’ll go get you some water and something to help you detox.”
“I didn’t know,” Tae rasped. “I’m sorry.”
“I know you are. Here, this should help.” You put the cold cloth in his hand and exited the room.
You made the sober-up and hangover concoction that Theo’s father had taught you for when he made stupid decisions in college. You’d always opted out of drinking because you used to have migraines like Theo got (you still did sometimes) before you were pregnant and didn’t think drinking was a wise choice. You’d gotten drunk and hungover once, and buzzed three or four times and found out that not only do you get hangovers like none other, you also got weepy when you’re even a little buzzed. You’d given it up by the time you were well into your relationship with him and he had only taught you how to make those for after he had drinking nights with his buddies.
You took a deep breath and grabbed a gatorade, water bottle, and the truly terrifying concoction.
Taehyung had the cloth over his face, but he peeked out as you came back in, quickly clutching the cloth to his nose. “What is that?”
“Something you’re going to drink. It’ll help you remove the toxins from your body, and is a tried and true sobering and hangover agent. Drink.”
His nose scrunched. “But it doesn’t smell like something good for you…”
“And copious amounts of alcohol does?” You countered, raising an eyebrow.
He winced and took the cup, making a face even as he brought it to his mouth.
You excused yourself a while later, making sure you were clean before going into Theo’s room.
He was already half-asleep, with a book open on his chest. He smiled a little more.
You pressed kisses to his face, tucking the blankets around him tighter. “I love you, baby.”
“Love you, mommy.”
“Sleep tight, sweet dreams,” You murmured.
He nodded. “You too. Tell Daddy I love him.”
“I will.”
“Don’t be too mad at him.”
You sighed softly. “I’m not angry, baby. I’m more upset because he knew it would make him sick. And other things. Besides, he interrupted my time with you.” You pressed another kiss to his face.
He laughed sleepily. “I’m going to sleep now, mommy.”
“Okay, I love you. Your alarm set?”
“Yes, Mommy. I can get ready on my own tomorrow if you’re too tired.”
“I’ll be up, baby. But we’ll have probably have cereal for breakfast.”
He nodded. “Can I have cocoa puffs?”
“Sure,” You agreed, stroking his hair from his face.
He nodded off shortly after.
You took the book and set it aside, and turning the light off. You exited the room, closing the door to just a crack.
You spent most of the night tending to Taehyung, finally getting to sleep sometime around one in the morning. Waking up early in the morning because Taehyung was groaning and heaving again.
You were awake when Theo got up, nursing a cup of coffee when he stumbled out, almost fully dressed, but with his socks in his hands instead of on his feet and his shirt buttoned incorrectly. You got him some cereal and fixed his shirt.
He was fully awake by the time Hoseok got there to pick him up (another part of the arrangement).
You thanked Hoseok again at the door while Theo was getting his backpack.
“It’s really no problem. Thanks for having him ready earlier than usual. Did he have breakfast?”
“Some cereal. I gave him a bigger snack.”
“I have to pop through someplace and get my breakfast. I’ll get him a hashbrown or something as well. And I can handle a headache if he gets one, so don’t worry. I’ll only call if he needs you. Speaking of, heard the boys were stupid yesterday.”
“Mmm, Taehyung’s very hungover. I doubt if tonight will be anything like we had planned.” You sighed leaning against the door. “But I have to get ready for work.”
“Call in sick, you look it,” He suggested, brow furrowed slightly.
“Getting my own headache. Thanks for taking Theo for tonight, Hobi. He’s really excited.”
“I’m ready!” Theo called happily as he raced down the hall and hopped into Hoseok’s awaiting arms. “Today is going to be so cool! Are we doing our spelling bee today?”
Hoseok chuckled. “We are. I’m sure you’ll try your hardest. Say goodbye to your mom.”
“Oh! Bye, mommy, I love you.”
“Be good for Uncle Hobi. I love you more.”
“I love you most.”
You smiled and kissed him. “Have a nice day at school. Talk to you later, Hoseok.”
“Tell daddy I love him too!” Theo wrapped his arms around Hoseok’s neck.
“I will, baby.”
“See you, y/n,” Hoseok said, heading toward the car.
You waved one more time then closed the door and headed in to where Tae was dozing.
You called in sick and texted Yoongi that you did so that he could help cover for you. He owed you that.
You then slept for a good few hours before you woke up to someone covering you with blankets.
Tae froze when you looked up at him. He swallowed hard, but it looked like he had showered and like he was feeling better.
“Hey,” You murmured.
“Hey, sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you.”
You shook your head. “It’s fine. Feel better?”
He nodded, head hanging. “I’m sorry about yesterday too. Are you still mad at me?”
“I’m not mad at you. I’m just making sure you understand that it better not happen again. I don’t mind you getting buzzed somewhere safe, like their apartment, but coming here so drunk…that’s not acceptable. And maybe I’m overreacting, actually, I probably am. But I can’t handle thinking that someone I care about is reckless with their life like that. It dredged up memories that I didn’t expect.” You sat up and hugged your knees to your chest.
He sat next to you, pressing his forehead to your shoulder. “I’m sorry.”
You sighed. “They weren’t bad memories, not all of them. I don’t know. I just need to rest a little more, I think.” You shifted and tucked yourself under his arm, resting your head on his shoulder. “I called in sick to work and made sure Yoongi covered for me as well.”
“Okay. Let’s nap, then.”
The two of you cuddled and napped for a good portion of the day, still dozing late in the afternoon when your phone started ringing.
You groaned softly, and Tae growled in annoyance.
“Hello?” You answered without looking.
“Y/n, there’s been an accident,” Namjoon’s voice sounded frantic over the phone.
You sat up, feeling Taehyung go rigid beside you as he heard as well.
“We’re at the hospital.”
Notes:
Alright! So, first of all, there will be another part, just don't tell anyone on Tumblr because they're driving me absolutely batty.
Second and MOST IMPORTANTLY!!! Obviously, I'm not going to kill Theo because that'd sort of defeat the purpose. The next chapter will be focused on their time at the hospital and going home, but after that if you want to see more, you need to do something very important!
You need to tell me what you want to see happen between these two (keeping in mind that I don't write smut)! Do you want to see them on a date with Theo, on a date alone, what sort of domestic things you want to see happen, etc. etc.
So comment now, or forever hold your peace!
Chapter 4
Summary:
The wait in the hospital begins.
Notes:
Hope y’all are ready for this. It took me a while to figure out how I wanted to do this part and then discovered it was great for working through emotions.

Chapter Text
Words were swirling inside your brain. All the words spoken to you since that morning. That beautiful morning with your son carrying his socks and wearing a mis-buttoned shirt, eating cocoa puffs and excited about his class spelling bee and his sleepover with his teachers/uncles. Hoseok telling you he would only call you if Theo needed you. Theo saying he loved you and to tell Tae that he loved Tae as well. Namjoon’s call.
There’s been an accident.
All the updates the doctors had given you about Theo and Hoseok.
Concussion.
Broken.
Surgery.
Severe.
Young.
Time will tell.
“Y/n!”
You flinched and looked up as Jimin came rushing in, looking like he ran the whole way there.
“Theo?” He asked, finally coming to a halt in front of you.
You opened your mouth, but nothing came out.
He knelt in front of you. “Y/n?”
“Um…he’s still with the doctors,” You finally managed to reply. “They were stopped, but the other car…”
Taehyung whimpered and nuzzled into you.
Namjoon looked up. “The other car was going 65 in a 25 and slammed into the side of the vehicle that Theo was on.”
Jimin dropped to the floor. He had a haunted look that you were sure you shared.
It was too similar.
Jin and Yoongi helped Jimin into a chair.
A doctor came in. “For Jung Hoseok?”
You hopped up with Namjoon.
“He’s out of surgery, he’s in room 427. He’ll need physical therapy and it’ll be a while before he’ll get the cast off, but he should be released in a couple days.”
“And the boy?” Namjoon asked.
“They’re still in surgery, but I’ll check and have someone give you an update.”
You nodded, grabbing onto Namjoon’s arm.
“We’ll wait here, why don’t you guys go see Hoseok,” Yoongi suggested softly. “I’ll text you if they bring an update here.”
“Call me. It’s faster.”
“Okay.”
You, Namjoon, and Taehyung headed toward Hoseok’s room.
He wasn’t quite awake yet, but he looked better than you would have thought from the severity of the crash.
You sat down, knowing if you were standing you might start to pace.
Hoseok’s gaze swept the room as he woke up, looking confused. Then his heartrate rose and his gaze fixed on Namjoon, who was closest. “Theo!”
“He’s with the doctors still, Hoseok,” Namjoon said calmly. “It’s not your fault. Let’s calm down.”
Hoseok shook his head, obviously still upset.
You got up and took his other hand, smiling softly when he opened his eyes to look at you, just noticing your presence. “It’s okay. Let’s just breathe. Okay? You and me.”
His eyes were full of tears, but he followed your breathing. “It happened so fast.”
“I know. I know it did. It’s okay. It’s going to be okay. Even…” You closed your eyes, “even if Theo doesn’t make it. It’ll be okay.”
Hoseok sobbed lightly, but he kept painstakingly following your even breathing.
“It’ll be okay,” You whispered again, forcing yourself to breath normally. “You’re going to get better. You did everything right, Hobi. You even had that car program that called the ambulance for you before anyone else. If you hadn’t, things could have been worse.” Theo could have died before reaching the hospital.
Hoseok was still crying, but he did his best to follow your breathing. It had to be painful, but you figured that might just make him cry more. The medicine was also probably making him more emotional.
Taehyung leaned over Hoseok’s head, gently petting his hair. “It’ll be okay, Hobi-hyung.”
Hoseok drifted back to sleep again after a while.
You kept hold of his hand, almost afraid to let go. You felt like you might float away without something to ground you. Your wisp of a soul blown away.
Taehyung startled you when he placed a hand on your shoulder, but he gentle kissed your temple and pulled you to your feet. “I’m going to take her back out to the waiting room.”
“I’ll stay with Hoseok. Call me with the details when we know them,” Namjoon replied softly, not moving from his seat. “I don’t want him to be alone.”
You couldn’t come up with any words, your throat tight and the knot growing ever-tighter.
Taehyung closed the door to Hobi’s room, then squared your shoulders so that you were facing him. He didn’t say anything, just looked into your eyes, his own a little misty and full of fear as well. His hand brushed your cheek, and you followed the sight of his damp fingertips before his hand dropped out of your sight.
You brought your hand to your face, feeling the dampness. You weren’t sure exactly when you had started crying. You didn’t know if you had just never stopped.
He pressed his forehead to yours, and you could just barely hear the way his breath shook as he exhaled. “I don’t…I don’t know as much about this as most adults…I don’t…” He breathed out quickly. “I don’t….”
“I don’t think I could bear to lose him,” You whispered, tears filling your eyes again. “He’s my baby. Why is this happening?”
His eyes filled as he looked at you, obviously not having an answer. But understanding your pain. He hugged you to his chest, crying with you in the hallway of the hospital.
After a while he gave you a squeeze and wiped his eyes before pulling away from you, and gently brushing your tears away. “Come on, let’s get back to the waiting room.”
You nodded, still shaky, and definitely clinging to him as a sort of lifeline. You’d never been more grateful for Theo picking Tae at the shelter. You couldn’t imagine what kind of mess your life would be right now without the collie-hybrid supporting you, not just today, but in the month and a half since he started living with you and Theo. Taking care of Theo so you wouldn’t have problems at work, fixing things around the house (only sometimes making things worse), and helping you sleep. He was a perfect fit for your family, and you hadn’t even been able to explore what the two of you could have. How it would work with Theo.
If Theo…
Jimin’s gaze snapped up when you two came in, only to drop again when he realized neither of you were the doctor. His face was red from tears.
Jin kept absentmindedly rubbing his back.
Yoongi looked up and an eyebrow quirked.
“Hoseok is okay. He’s asleep again,” You said, voice shaking as you sat down.
“Nurse came back and said they were still in surgery,” Yoongi replied. “But she didn’t have any other information for us.”
Taehyung grabbed both of your hands in one of his, his other arm wrapping around your shoulders. “Are you cold?”
“A little,” You whispered. “Why?”
“You’re trembling. Here,” he took off his sweatshirt and helped you put it on before pulling you back into his arms, “I’ll keep you warm.”
You curled up and into his arms, focusing on the nice smell of his sweatshirt. It was kind of strange scent, but it was warm and calming.
He started humming, a lullaby if your memory was correct.
You breathed out shakily, feeling fidgety.
Another hour passed.
Frustration and anguish were fighting for dominance as the clock continued to tick away.
Shouldn’t they be done by now?
Shouldn’t there be some sort of news?
They could only keep someone Theo’s age under sedation for so long, right?
You ended up curled up in Taehyung’s lap, probably because he was as feeling about the same as you were.
Namjoon came out half an hour later, checking that there hadn’t been any news, then went back to Hoseok who was still sleeping.
Taehyung started stroking your hair, a slight whine in his voice that he quickly controlled when he asked if you were hungry.
“No,” You choked out, curling tighter.
He nodded resting his head on yours. “Okay. We’ll eat later.”
Was Theo alive?
Were there complications?
“Where’s my baby?” You whimpered, finding it hard to breathe completely. Your chest felt constricted. Your breaths came in gasps. “Why is it taking so long?”
“I don’t know,” He answered, voice shaking as well.
“Hey, y/n,” Yoongi said, coming over and crouching beside you and Tae. “You need to breath properly, okay? You’re going to hyperventilate. Follow Taehyung’s breathing.”
You choked as you tried to swallow, coughing and struggling to breath in again. You dragged in a shallow breath.
They had a quick exchange and then Taehyung was kissing you when you breathed in next.
You breathed out rapidly when he pulled away, then dragged in a deeper breath.
He kissed you much more briefly, making sure you held the oxygen in for a moment, regulating your breathing with kisses.
The tight feeling in your chest started dissipating, like a belt beginning to be loosened.
You finally drew in a proper breath, meeting Taehyung’s gaze.
He shushed you when he saw that you were going to say something. “Just breath. Let’s just breath. You and me. Breathing.”
Jimin handed you a cup of water, not letting go until Taehyung was supporting your shaking hands.
The water definitely helped, which wasn’t surprising. You always had Theo drink a glass of water when he was upset because he would calm down faster and it could prevent him from getting a headache.
The same headache you now had.
“Ibuprofen?” Seokjin offered.
You nodded, taking it and then drinking more of the water. “Sorry.”
“You have no reason to be sorry. Your son is in surgery after a bad accident. It’s natural for you to be worried,” Seokjin said, tone comforting as he rubbed your back briefly and then hugged onto Taehyung, who leaned into the comforting touch of the other hybrid. “Waiting is a form of torture.”
You almost felt like he was talking from experience and from the way Jimin hugged onto Jin, and Yoongi’s sharp inhale, you suspected you were right. “You…”
He just smiled gently. “You can ask.”
“You were a dad?” Taehyung asked, looking in surprise at Jin.
“Well, sort of. There was this…kid. I found him abandoned in the streets. Hid him in Yoongi’s room for the last two months we were there and he came with us when we moved into the apartment. He was a bright kid, but he got hurt. We went to the playground and he fell from the swings, onto his head. The hospital handed him over to social services after we waited with him for three days. We at least found out that he made a full recovery, but we…haven’t seen him since.”
Yoongi was regarding his hybrid with hidden worry.
But Jin seemed peaceful, maybe a little wistful. He smiled softly at you and Taehyung. “But the hours in the hospital, waiting to find out how he was were hell. Yoongi wouldn’t stop pacing and I was a mess. He got hurt on my watch. But it had to have been for the best. He probably got proper parents. Given a better chance at life than I could give him. I was still so young, and he was about to be a teenager. I like to think that he’s living a fantastic life. He’d be an adult now.”
Jimin rested his head on Jin’s.
You shifted so that you were sitting beside Taehyung instead of across from him, leaning on him. You were calm now, but also sleepy. You felt guilty about it, but you knew that fighting it might cause you more anxiety. “Nap.”
“Okay,” He whispered, his voice deep and even again, also seeming calmed by the older hybrid’s gentle tone.
You woke up with a crick in your neck, and your head pounding a little more. You looked blearily around the waiting room, noticing Yoongi staring blankly at a magazine. “What time is it?” You asked in a hoarse whisper.
He jolted, looking at you then breathing again and checking his phone. “You’ve been asleep for about two hours.”
Your heart sank. “Still nothing?”
He shook his head. “Not yet. I was going to go ask for an update if we didn’t get anything in the next ten minutes.”
You nodded, carefully extricating yourself from the pile of sleeping people on the floor. You sat in the chair next to Yoongi. “Tell me honestly, how bad was it back then?”
Yoongi leaned back in his seat. “Jin was inconsolable. He cared so much for that kid. And he left out the bit where Jungkook cried as they took him away. Cried for Jin. I wasn’t as involved with everything, but it was still hard. It took months for Jin to cheer up. Being separated from someone they love is like pneumonia for hybrids. Especially dog-hybrids. And Jungkookie was Jin’s baby, even if he wasn’t a baby.”
You had a weird tickling thought that wouldn’t fully form. “He seems so at peace with it now.”
“Yeah, more than I think I ever will be. I can’t forget the way Jin cried. How sick he got afterward, or how he was a skeleton with skin despite me force-feeding him as often as he would let me. Jimin was one of the reasons Jin started recovering as well. I had to get a roommate because Jin was so sick and I had to pay his medical bills as well as rent. Jimin answered my ad, and when he came to see the place, him and Jin hit it off right away.” Yoongi sighed. “Jimin was close to having an eating disorder, but the two of them worked on eating properly together. When we decided to move, we didn’t even think about not inviting Jimin. He sort of filled part of the gap that Jungkook had left.”
What was it about that name that seemed familiar?
You frowned a bit, trying to pull that little tickling thought to the front of your mind.
“Can’t replace that bunny-smile though.”
It finally clicked. “Jungkook…he probably had a deep affection for hybrids because of Jin.”
Yoongi frowned, shrugging. “Maybe. Unless he viewed it as Jin’s fault.”
Taehyung was stirring and he woke up groggily, looking around and then moving so that the other two were propped against each other while he came over to sit against your legs.
“Tae, at the shelter, do you remember the guy that was helping me and Theo?”
Tae nodded, barely forcing his eyes open. “Jungkookie. Jeon Jungkookie. He was the best.”
Yoongi’s eyes were huge, and his gaze locked onto yours. “Big eyes? Bunny smile?”
“He’s on the staff website,” Tae murmured, looking like he might fall back to sleep.
Yoongi whipped out his phone again, then cursed. “My battery’s almost dead.”
“I’ll pull it up,” You offered, fishing your phone from your pocket and pulling up the website. You scrolled until you found him, and showed it to Yoongi.
Who choked, looking like he’d been punched. He took your phone with shaking hands.
“It’s him?”
Yoongi nodded, then his gaze cleared and he shook his head like he was clearing his thoughts. “Don’t tell Jin-hyung about this. I want to investigate it first.”
“There’s a phone number,” You whispered.
He looked at it, obviously tempted.
“I called him earlier,” Tae said sleepily. “He was one of my friends at the shelter. I was worried so I called him earlier. He said he would come down.” He looked at the clock. “He should be here soon.”
Yoongi’s alarm was palpable.
Enough that it fully woke Taehyung, and woke up Seokjin.
“Yoongi? What’s wrong?” Jin asked, rubbing his eyes.
Yoongi opened his mouth.
“Taehyung?” A somewhat familiar voice called out, poking his head into the waiting room afterward.
Tae grinned. “Jungkookie!” He hopped up and hurried over, hugging his friend.
Jin’s face was white as snow, and slack. His tail was between his legs, back turned to the boy, and obviously avoiding looking.
“Hey, any news on the kid?” Jungkook asked Tae.
Tae’s face dropped. “Not yet. But Hoseok-hyung is going to be okay.”
Jungkook looked a little worried. “It’s been a long time, right?”
Tae nodded silently. “Oh, you remember Y/n? And that is Jimin, and Yoongi and—”
“Seokjinnie-hyung?” Jungkook’s eyes were wide, and his voice full of surprise and disbelief.
Jin had turned ever so slightly, and his adam’s apple bobbed visibly as he saw the young man. Tail still between his legs, and ears flat against his head. “Hello, Jungkook.”
Jungkook’s disbelief gave way to a huge grin and he launched himself at Jin, hugging him. “I found you! I found you!” He grinned at Jin. “I found you this time!”
Jin whimpered, then nuzzled the boy’s head, pulling him tightly back into a hug.
Taehyung looked confused. “What…is going on?”
“Jungkook is the one…that…” Yoongi’s voice shook, and he gave up on explaining.
Jungkook pulled away from Jin and latched onto Yoongi. “Yoongi-hyung.”
“Yah, stop it,” Yoongi complained, but it didn’t sound very much like a complaint as he tightly returned the hug.
Jimin must have explained it to Taehyung, who looked a little excited now.
Jungkook quickly tucked back into Jin’s arms after his hug with Yoongi. “God, I’ve missed you like hell, Jin-hyung. I was really scared when I started the hybrid studies course at school because my professor said you probably would have died from grief after I was taken away. I’m so glad you’re okay. So, so glad.”
Jin didn’t seem to have any words for that. Instead he smoothed Jungkook’s hair and choked on something that might have been a laugh. “You got tall. And strong.”
Jungkook nodded with a grin. “I’m taller than you now, hyung. I went back to the apartment, at least, I think it was the right one, but you weren’t there anymore. Hadn’t been for years from what I could find. I thought I had searched the whole town for you. I even asked every hybrid that came into the shelter if they knew or had heard of you.”
“He’s working at a cafe, the only hybrid worker they’ve ever hired,” Yoongi said proudly. “And he got his degree right alongside me.”
Jungkook’s eyes shone with pride for Jin.
You wanted to enjoy the sweet moment, you really did. It would make a wonderful distraction.
But your baby.
It’d been far too long, and you feared the news would be dire.
Jin’s gaze snapped to you and Taehyung whined.
You shook your head. “Sorry. I just…” You trailed off, gesturing to the clock.
“I’ll go ask if there’s any news,” Yoongi said, sobering up and quickly walking out.
Jin detached Jungkook, gently hugging you before leading Jungkook over to chairs a little separated from everyone to slowly choke out a sort of conversation.
Yoongi came back looking exasperated.
Jimin hugged onto him.
Taehyung sat beside you. “So, Jungkookie was the boy that Jin took in. Small world. Must be fate.”
“I want to go check in on Hobi, but I don’t want to leave here in case the doctor comes. Namjoon probably needs a break too.” You muttered, more to yourself than him.
He covered your hands, stilling them from where you were rubbing and fidgeting. “Yoongi gave him a break a while ago, he ate and went back. You were asleep. Someone told me once that no news can sometimes be good news.”
“They obviously weren’t waiting to find out if their child was going to be okay after a serious car crash,” You retorted, scrunching your face.
He chuckled softly. “Yeah, but I feel like if he…then they would come tell us. Aside from that, what could be the worst news we could get?”
It was rhetorical. You knew it was.
“ ‘I’m so sorry, Ms. Y/L/N, we did our best but your son will likely not survive through the night’ or ‘I’m sorry, we’ve done all that we could but we suspect he’s brain-dead’.”
He whimpered, looking terrified.
“Yeah,” You replied, leaning against him. You weren’t feeling weepy anymore. You were strangely irritated and angry. You wanted to rant at some nurse about waiting for so long. There was no way that they kept Theo under sedation that long. It’d been almost eight hours.
Too long.
You groaned and dropped your head to your hands.
“Park Jimin, we’re looking for Park Jimin,” An alarmed voice said at the desk, loud enough that it easy to hear.
Jimin’s eyes got huge. “Eomma?” He called out, probably without thinking judging by the alarmed look he fixed on you.
Your hand gripped onto Taehyung’s, breath caught in your chest.
His mother came rushing in, followed by an older man who must have been Jimin’s father. “Aish, we were worried sick. I called you at work and your coworker said you had left to come to the hospital!”
“Oh,” He muttered. “Sorry. No, I’m um…here because…”
“Hoseok, he’s here because our friend Hoseok was in a bad accident,” Tae jumped in.
“Yeah, Hoseok.”
His mother’s eyes narrowed. “Hoseok?”
“He’s a good friend.”
“You’ve never mentioned him before.”
“I haven’t?” Jimin sounded guilty.
“I thought you all were waiting to hear about y/n’s son?” Jungkook asked.
“Not me!” Jimin said too hastily.
“But Jin said he was your nephew?”
Jin scoffed. “I said no such thing.” He batted the younger boy’s head.
But no one believed him despite Jin’s excellent acting.
Jimin’s parents were looking between him and you, while you felt like dying.
This was your nightmare. This was the level of hell that you never wanted to play with. The one thing you never wanted to experience.
“Nephew?” Jimin’s father asked.
His mother’s gaze was fixed on you now.
You couldn’t breath. Your mouth was dry.
Taehyung placed a hand on your back. “It’s going to be okay,” he whispered.
You barely managed to swallow.
“Eomma,” Jimin said urgently. “Let’s talk outside.” He gently tugged on her.
“Park Jimin you better explain what he meant right now,” She warned.
“Eomma,” He tried again, looking pleadingly at his father.
His father looked a little frozen.
“Now, Park Jimin.”
“Y/n…’s son, Theo, he’s…my nephew. He’s Jihyun’s son. Jihyun-hyung…and y/n were dating when he died. He never knew about Theo.” Jimin’s voice was unsteady, and he looked like he might cry.
You could see Jin stop himself from going over to hug Jimin multiple times.
“That’s ridiculous,” His mother replied.
But his father looked like he believed it.
“He would have told us,” His mother continued to argue.
“He didn’t know, eomma. But he told me about her. He told me he wanted to marry her. He was going to have me meet her. Besides, you’d been arguing with him for two years, he only talked to me about his personal life.”
You did not need this drama. You didn’t need to know how much Jihyun had protected you from his family.
You needed to know that your baby was okay.
You looked over at Yoongi.
He went over, his aura suddenly quite intimidating. “I understand that this is difficult for you to find out, but I must ask you to take this discussion somewhere else.” He definitely wasn’t asking.
Jimin’s mother looked like she was about to argue.
“Family of Theodore Y/L/N?” A doctor came in.
You bolted up. “I’m his mother,” You said, almost breathlessly.
She nodded, coming over to you.
The other guys gathered nearby, definitely listening with bated breath.
“We had to complete multiple procedures, and we’re sorry we didn’t get more information to you.”
You nodded, waiting feeling more tense by the second.
“We have put him in a medically induced coma,” She said gently. “He sustained multiple injuries and we judged it best to keep him in the coma until his body can heal a bit. We don’t know the extent of the damage to his spine, but there were two breaks in it.”
You sat down, hearing from her intonation that there was more.
“There was some minor brain trauma, his collarbone is fractured, and both the radius and ulna of his right arm were broken. Five of his ribs were broken and punctured his lung, and a shard of bone was dangerously close to his heart. We managed to get the shard, and he’s breathing on his own, but we’re keeping him on the oxygen to keep him stable.” She paused.
You thought you were going to be sick.
“Both of his legs were fractured. He’s going to need extensive physical therapy, and we don’t know how his brain will heal.”
You stared at the floor through your tears.
“He’s in the ICU, room 387,” She finished, sounding sympathetic.
“Thank you,” You whispered.
Taehyung rubbed your back. “Let’s go up.”
You nodded, wiping away your tears. It didn’t feel real. It couldn’t be real.
The elevator made you feel even more sick.
Taehyung hugged you tightly until the elevator opened, but he kept his arm around you.
The other guys said they’d come up in a bit, let you see your baby first. Jin had gone to tell Namjoon.
You stepped onto the third floor, following the signs to where Theo was.
Taehyung stopped you.
You turned to him, and tears filled your eyes when you saw how scared he was.
“I’m so scared,” he whispered. “He’s my pup.” Tears were filling his eyes.
You nodded. “I know.” You squeezed his hand.
He squeezed it back and quickly stepped closer to you, inching to his room apprehensively.
You finally saw your baby.
Taehyung held you as you sobbed on the floor, great body-wracking sobs over the broken body of your baby boy.
Chapter Text
Taehyung woke you up gently, pressing kisses to your cheeks, nose and forehead.
You sighed and stretched. “Mmm, what time is it?”
“Seven,” He whispered, tilting your chin slightly so he could kiss your lips. “You said you wanted to get there early.”
You nodded. “It’s his first day of physical therapy. He was scared. Jin send any updates?”
“Haven’t checked. You okay?” He asked, feeling your forehead.
“Just tired. Always tired. I wish there was a miracle cure that I could give him. Or that I could take his pain and he could continue to be my rambunctious baby.” You buried your face in his shoulder, sighing in frustration.
The past three weeks had been exhausting. You couldn’t recall a single night where you felt like you went to bed with some scrap of mental, emotional, or physical strength. They had woken Theo up about a week and a half after he was admitted, and he had taken it well since he was still so groggy. But you hardly left his side for the first three days. The only reason you left on the fourth was because of work. You had to pay for the medical bills somehow. Now they were thinking he was healed enough to start some very minor physical therapy. He didn’t have feeling from about mid-shin down, but his brain had healed well. The doctors didn’t think there was any lasting damage now. He got the casts off of his legs and his collarbone was healed, so they were really happy with how he was recovering so far.
Taehyung spent most of his days at the hospital, and Jin and Jimin alternated nights to help you two out.
Yoongi bought you lunch most days, and visited Theo on the weekends. Bringing movies to binge and board games to play.
Theo always perked up when Yoongi got there on Saturday morning.
Namjoon brought Hoseok whenever the two didn’t have too much work, and he would bring in music stuff—instruments or tracks—to entertain Theo.
Theo loved Namjoon’s music visits, just as he loved music class the most.
Hoseok still had to catch up on some grading, and recovering his class from a week with a substitute teacher on top of his own bit of physical therapy for his leg injury. He still obviously felt guilty, but he also helped Theo learn things he was missing in class. He had told you that the kids would ask after Theo, and they even sent in get-well-soon cards.
Theo kept saying he couldn’t wait to go back to school.
Jimin drew cartoons on Theo’s casts before they were removed and Theo loved them so much that he insisted Jimin teach him how to draw, and now there were drawings everywhere.
Taehyung kissed your collarbone. “Hey, you okay?”
“Just…waking up.” You curled into him.
He chuckled sleepily. “No, you’re not.”
“Are you telling me that you’re awake?”
He gave a sleepy sounding hum. “Not really, but I know we need to get up.”
You nodded, yawning into his chest and then rolling away from him and getting up in one movement.
“Hey, Jimin texted me to call him,” Taehyung said, frowning at his phone.
You sighed. “It probably has something to do with his parents. You better call him.”
He made an almost growling sound at the mention of Jimin’s parents—who had been a continual pain in the ass through this whole process—but he calls Jimin.
You don’t pay attention much while he talks to Jimin, getting ready for the day, and only noticing that something was wrong when Taehyung growls again.
He’s pacing along his side of the bed, not saying anything but there’s a steady growl in his throat. “He starts his therapy today!”
You flinch when he scoffs, and worry fills you at the frown creasing his forehead.
“What am I supposed to tell Y/n, Jiminie?!”
“I’d suggest the truth if you want everyone to live,” You said, eyes narrowed.
He looked up and gulped. “Can I make him explain it?”
You were already in front of him, taking the phone. “What’s going on?”
“My parents…they caused a scene here and the doctors decided to reschedule his physical therapy…since my parents ordered a DNA test.” Jimin sounded apologetic.
“What do they expect to get from a DNA test?” You asked, feeling bile rise in your throat.
“I don’t know, but I’m on top of it, they won’t make a move I don’t know about. I’ll stay with him all day, okay?”
“Jimin, why did they order a DNA test?”
He was quiet, and you heard him huff out a breath. “Because they want to see if he’s actually who we claim and maybe add him to their will if he is,” He said, sounding frustrated.
“Which means they’d try to take him away from me?”
“Possibly. If you didn’t want to comply with their standards.”
“Which I won’t.” You glared at the wall. “Your family sucks.”
“I know. It’s probably better if you stay away, though, that’ll delay things because they need your permission to do the DNA testing.”
You froze. “But—”
“I’ll keep her away,” Tae said, loud enough to be heard, and taking the phone. “Call us if Theo needs her.”
You stared in disbelief as he said goodbye to Jimin and then hung up.
He looked back at you. “It’s for the best, anyway. You’re exhausted.”
“I can’t sleep, not now,” You argued.
“There’s more than just physical exhaustion,” He rebutted, then leaned in and kissed you. “He’s safe with friends. Yoongi will be there later today, with Namjoon and Jimin, just like they planned and they’ll play games with Theo.”
“I barely ever there—”
“You practically live there,” He cut you off with a whine. “Please, I know you’re tired. I know. It’s been a really hard month. But Theo’s being looked after really well. All of the nurses adore him because he’s so sweet and polite. It’s time to take care of yourself.”
You tilted your head, at a loss for words.
He stepped closer, and arms wrapping around your waist after he tossed the phone onto the bed. His lips met yours softly. “It’s time to forget you’re a mom for a few minutes. Just…be you. Be who you were before you were a mom.”
“I don’t know who that is,” You whispered.
“Then just be the person you are with me,” He whispered back, voice low and deep.
You sighed and surrendered to him, allowing him to pull you into a series of lingering kisses.
“Dress up a bit, lets go out.” He murmured, tail swooshing behind him. “Or, well…let’s go for a picnic.”
You stepped back slightly, uncertain.
“Please, Y/n. We both need to let go for a while.” He pressed a kiss to your cheek.
And you gave in, nodding. “Okay, but…I don’t know…I don’t want to deal with other people.”
“Then we’ll have a picnic in the backyard. You get ready, and I’ll go get things set up and then if you could make us sandwiches?”
You nodded.
“Then we’ll have a nice little date,” He said, grinning at you as his fingers brushed your cheek. Then his shoulders scrunched happily with his face and he practically skipped out of the room. “Remember, wear pretty clothes!”
“O-okay…” You called back, then frowned at your closet door. “I don’t know if I have anything?”
You went into your closet, looking for something pretty that was also middling between casual and Easter Sunday high teas that you used to go to at your grandmother’s senior home while she was alive.
Instead you found frustration and work clothes. Some clothes you might wear to parent-teacher conferences, or to one of the school events.
But the only date-like thing you found in your closet was from before Theo was conceived and you weren’t about to try that on. You knew how your body had changed since then and didn’t need the reminder from your closet. You’d sort of squeezed into it the last time you’d worn it anyway, and you had more hip now.
Sure, you probably had more clothes in that box, but you knew most of the clothes in ther
Taehyung came back when you had been in there for too long. “What’s wrong?”
“No clothes,” You muttered. “Nothing to wear.”
He tilted his head, then came over to look through your clothes. He pulled out a sweater and a skirt, handing them to you. “It’s a little cold outside, so maybe leggings?”
You looked over the outfit and then at him, surprised. “Um…yeah…okay.”
He nodded and walked out. “I’ll make sandwiches!”
You heard your bedroom door close, and started changing. You were surprised at how well he managed to find an outfit for you, but then again, he dressed so well himself, even on a minimal budget.
And it was a nice, casual date outfit.
You did your hair a little, and your makeup a little more. Actually put on earrings and a necklace.
Taehyung was plating sandwiches, making things look nice.
You looked outside in surprise. “It’s raining?”
He looked out as well. “Yeah. It just started. But we can still have a picnic. It’ll just have to be a living room picnic. I already cleared the space and….” He trailed off when he looked at you. His expression softened and he smiled. “Wow, y/n. You look so beautiful.”
You could have blushed, and you might have blushed from the way he was looking at you. “It’s been a while.”
“You always look beautiful,” He added, sincerity in all of his features and gestures. He took your hands in his, tail slowly swishing. “Thank you for agreeing to do this with me.”
You nodded, looking at the ground, unable to meet his gaze.
“Ooh, can I put a fire in the fireplace?”
You nodded again, stealing glanced at him as he excitedly went to turn on the gas fireplace.
Then he dimmed the lights some, and finished arranging blankets and pillows.
“Alright, I think that covers it, sorry we’re only having sandwiches.”
“I can live with sandwiches,” You replied softly, letting him lead you over to sit in the picnic area. You got comfortable while he hurried back to get the plate of sandwiches. You didn’t know your living room could feel so romantic.
He brought over the food and drinks on the bed-tray, setting it down. “It’s just grape juice, but I thought the glasses made it feel more romantic.”
You smiled. “Does. I didn’t even know the living room could look like this.”
He grinned. “We should make it look like this more often.”
You laughed a little.
He kept your laughing a little as the two of you ate, telling you stories and drawing stories of your family out.
You moved the tray and sat beside him, leaning on his shoulder.
He was still for a moment before relaxing into it. He kissed your forehead, then kept telling you about a movie he had seen.
You stared into the fire, listening to his voice. It was so soothing, so wonderfully perfect.
His lips met yours softly, then parted to lightly brush your cheeks. “I love you, y/n.”
You sighed happily, eyes staying shut. “I love you, Taehyung.”
Chapter Text
“No.”
“What do you mean, no?” You asked, leaning back into the chair, dumbfounded. “He was allowed to come in last time.”
“The laws changed,” The man answered carefully. “The hybrid laws.”
You gripped the arms of the chair. “What?”
He uneasily handed you a newspaper.
You scanned over it, anger boiling up in you. “What?”
He folded his hands together. “I’m not saying we agree with this, but we have to comply or we could find ourselves in legal trouble. It’s the same for your other friend.”
You froze, thinking of Seokjin, who was supposed to work today. “I need to warn him….” You scrambled for your phone, quickly dialing Seokjin’s number.
Yoongi answered, but you gave him a quick rundown and he said he would tell Jin.
After you did that, looking at the newspaper in your lap, you sighed. “This timing isn’t good.”
“I know. I’m very sorry. But I also need to talk to you about your son’s recovery.”
You froze, slowly returning your gaze to the man. “Okay.”
“We’ve noticed in his physical therapy that he gets disoriented very quickly when we’re working with the crutches. Any time he’s in a standing position. We want to run some tests to see if there’s a reason for it.”
You nodded slowly. “Alright.”
“We want to do another MRI,” he said carefully.
You shifted uncomfortably. “Oh.”
“I understand that you’re in a difficult situation, financially. But we don’t want to risk anything.”
You nodded. “We don’t. Whatever he needs. I’ll…I’ll figure it out. Do what you need to.”
He nodded as well. “I’ll get it scheduled and we’ll tell his physical therapy doctors to keep him still until we can figure out what’s been going on.”
“Thank you.”
“And…there’s still a certification program for hybrids….” He hinted carefully, pulling a pamphlet from his desk drawer and slipping it across the desk.
You took it and nodded. “Alright. Thank you.”
He dipped his head.
You exited the office, clutching the paper in your hand, and then went down to lean in the doorway of your baby’s room.
Theo was awake, talking quietly with Jimin over the homework Namjoon had dropped off. He looked tired, and not at all as happy as normal.
You went in, not interrupting as you climbed up to sit beside him carefully.
He leaned into your hold. “Mommy, everything hurts.”
You kissed his head, holding him as tightly as you dared without hurting him. “I know. Why don’t we work on your homework some other time?”
Jimin gathered it up when Theo only sighed and closed his eyes, leaning further into your arms. “Where’s…?”
You cut him off with a look, darting a glance at Theo.
But Theo was already asleep, so you took a deep breath. “The laws changed last night. Hybrids…their freedom. Gone. Long story. Warned Yoongi and Jin. I’ll tell Taehyung when I leave. For now I just told him to stay in the car. I can’t stay long because of it, though.”
Jimin nodded. “I’ve got the day off. I can stay with him. What else did the doctor say?”
“They want to do another MRI, he’s been getting disoriented when upright.”
He frowned. “I wondered. He was okay until the nurse and I helped him to the bathroom, then he seemed to be in a lot of pain.”
You sighed. “I might drop Taehyung off at home and come back.”
“Work?” He asked.
You sighed. “Audits. We’re not allowed at the office. That’s why Yoongi is home.”
“Audits?” His eyes widened. “That doesn’t sound good.”
“Well, it’s every section but mine and Yoongi’s so we’re the only ones with job security at the moment. If the company survives, that is.”
Jimin was quiet for a moment. “And if it doesn’t?”
“I’m going to have to find another way of paying these bills.” You smoothed Theo’s hair, studying the little frown on his face. He looked so frail to you. Sure, he was getting better. And he’d been in great spirits most of the time. He didn’t normally seem this frail. Maybe it was all in your head due to your conversation with the doctor.
“The nurse got permission to give him more painkiller before you went into the meeting with the doctor,” Jimin murmured, also looking at Theo.
You frowned. “He hasn’t had that very often. Only mild ones at night, to help him sleep better.”
Jimin nodded. “Thought so. Don’t like that.”
“Don’t like that at all,” You agreed, pressing another soft kiss to Theo’s forehead. “Stay close to him while I take Tae home?”
He nodded. “I’ll tell Theo you’ll be right back if he wakes up.”
“Thanks, Jimin. Everything quiet on your family front?”
He rolled his eyes. “Yeah. They’re quiet for now. The dna test shut them up pretty well. Haven’t heard a peep, especially since you shut that lawyer up.”
You nodded. “Let’s hope it stays that way for now.”
Jimin nodded as well. “He’s really out. Go. You’ll be back soon.”
“Right,” You agreed, reluctantly, carefully extricating yourself from your precious son and his hospital bed. “If the doctor comes by with paperwork for the MRI tell him I’ll be back shortly and tell him about this?”
“Of course. Go, y/n. The quicker you leave, the quicker you’ll be back. I’m going to call and check on Jin.”
You nodded and grabbed your purse, looking over your precious baby one more time before hurrying toward the stairs.
Taehyung was pouting and playing on the tablet that you had brought for yourself, but he perked up when he saw you.
“The laws changed last night,” You told him before you were even fully in the vehicle. “If you want to visit him at the hospital you’d have to become an aid-hybrid.”
He took the pamphlet, frowning. “But…I just want to see my pup. Why can’t I see him?”
“I wish I knew. I have to take you home, though, and then I need to come back because they want to do another MRI and I haven’t signed the paperwork for it yet. He’s having a bad day,” You murmured, sighing. “He had to have pain medicine. He hasn’t had pain medicine during the day in a while.”
Taehyung whimpered, leaning across the console to rest his forehead on your shoulder. “But I want to see him. I want to see him. I know I can’t, but I want to.”
“I know. We’ll figure it out.” You told him softly. “He’s alive. He’s alive, we’re together. And if we can ever get him fully healthy, he’ll come home and we’ll all be together there. And we’ll take him to school, and he’ll grow up, and be good. He’ll be so good.”
“Amazingly good, the best, he’ll be the best person in the world—I can smell it!”
You gave him a gentle smile and then started driving, because you needed to get back to the hospital before any sort of MRI took place. You wanted to be there if they found anything. Anything at all.
You had just pulled into the driveway, when your phone started ringing.
Taehyung had grabbed it while you put the car in park, but he handed it to you with wide eyes.
You snatched it. “Jimin?”
“They-they…he—” Jimin stuttered, then let out a sound while you were throwing the car into reverse and Taehyung was keeping lookout for you. “He just…started…and they…”
“Jimin, full sentences. What happened?” You demanded, racing back toward the hospital.
“He woke up, but he was crying, and he was in too much pain and I paged the nurse and then Theo was screaming because he was in pain, and he wet the bed and the nurse hit the emergency button and they rushed him to testing and—y/n….”
You barely got the car into park, letting Taehyung take care of the vehicle as you bolted to the stairs and took them two at a time.
Jimin met you in the hall, but he was still babbling more or less, absolutely terrified.
You dragged him down the hall to a nurse that seemed to be waiting for you.
“He had a spinal aneurysm that ruptured, he’s in surgery right now and we’re doing everything we can for him. We’ll let you know his condition as things progress.”
You nodded, wanting to snap out a response about not being informed last time, but too scared.
Hadn’t you already gotten too close to losing your baby once?
Jimin squeezed your hand tight and gently pulled you away. “Did you get Taehyung home?”
You shook your head. “We’d just pulled in when you called. He’s parking the car.”
“Okay. Yoongi’s on his way with Jin. Jin can drive Taehyung back to the house.”
“You called Yoongi?”
“I was on the phone with him when Theo woke up. He wanted to take Jin over to your house to be with Tae anyway. He said somebody sane should be here with us when he texted me later.”
“Well he’s not wrong,” You breathed, the feeling of being punched finally settling into your stomach and leaving you breathless. Your baby was in surgery. Again.
It was an age before Yoongi actually arrived, crouching in front of you. “Any news?”
“Ruptured spinal aneurysm. Surgery. Supposedly getting more updates,” You croaked out. You wished Taehyung was here to squeeze the life out of you, but you opted for crushing Jimin and Yoongi’s hands.
“Ok…ok…um…Jin is with Tae, we saw him in the parking lot. I told them to go back to your house, if that’s okay?”
You nodded. “They can’t come in. It’s best if they’re somewhere they can sit comfortably.”
“I almost texted Namjoon and Hoseok but then I figured they were at work and I didn’t want them being distracted for the rest of the day. Best to fill them in when we know more, right?” Yoongi kept talking in a calm tone that was doing wonders to stop your head from spinning. “Have you told Taehyung what you know so far?”
You shook your head.
“Alright, Jin has his phone if you want to call and talk to Taehyung.”
You nodded.
Yoongi pulled out his phone and dialed a number. “Hey, give the phone to Taehyung?”
You waited while Yoongi did, feeling nauseous.
“Hey, y/n wanted to talk to you,” Yoongi murmured, looking up and rubbing the back of your hand. “If she forgets, Theo is in surgery.”
You took the offered phone and got up, pacing away to find a place you could talk and break down without anyone around. “Tae?”
“Surgery?” Tae asked quietly.
“Um…ruptured…spinal aneurysm. They’re trying to fix him…but…they told me he was getting better. They told me….” You sat on the stairs and tried to breath.
“I know,” He whimpered. “I know. I wish I could be there. What can I do?”
“What can any of us do?” You asked in return. “Pray? Wish? Hope?”
“Hyung said we both needed to drink a glass of water,” Taehyung sniffled. “And I’ll do all of those things. Okay? We’re not giving up, not until we’re forced to. Both of us will go drink a big glass of water, try to calm down enough to not go crazy and rely on the others to help us through this.”
“Yeah…yeah, okay.”
“Call or text any new information?”
“I’ll give Yoongi that job since he’s the sane one.”
“That works. Y/n? You know that no matter what, you’ve still got me?”
You managed a bit of a smile. “I remember.”
“Love you.”
“Love you too.” You hung up and stumbled back to the other two, letting your head fall onto Jimin’s shoulder. “I’ve been told to drink lots of water.”
Yoongi nodded. “I’ll go get all of us some bottles of water. And some snacks. We don’t want to be able to see him and then have to leave because we’re hungry.”
“And can you text them the updates as we get them?”
“Of course. Leave it to me. Thank god we had the day off, huh?” Yoongi tried, attempting to lighten the mood a bit.
You managed to nod even if your face refused to acknowledge the twinge of amusement you felt.
Yoongi kissed the top of your head. “We’ve got you, y/n.”
Jimin nodded as he rested his head on top of yours.
Yoongi kissed Jimin’s head as well, then strolled off to the cafeteria.
A doctor was the one to come out and call for Theo’s family.
An uneasy feeling bloomed within you, but you followed him into the consultation room with Jimin in tow and Yoongi promising to be right outside.
“We’ve done everything we can to help him, but there was significant damage that could cause life-long problems—”
“He’ll live?” Jimin clarified.
The doctor nodded, smiling gently. “He’ll live, but he may be paralyzed or live with significant pain. There is a minimal chance of there being no paralysis.” He kept talking about conditions and things but you were stuck in what had already been said. The word paralyzed bouncing around and echoing in your mind and not leaving any room for anything else.
You knew Jimin was filling Yoongi in, but you just couldn’t focus.
Theo was out of it when he woke up, still drugged up, but you got him to take some ice chips, and then sung him to sleep.
Hoseok and Namjoon showed up a little earlier than you expected, even with their summer schedules, but they were there.
Almost everyone was there, but the one other person that mattered the most to you and Theo.
——
“This one wouldn’t reach the threshold,” Yoongi grumbled, then shook his head. “That’s it. I’ll make the ramps you need. Come on. Let’s go pick up the supplies.”
“Are you sure?” You asked, pushing the cart with supplies after him. The two of you were picking up everything you needed to make things accessible for Theo. You’d done extensive research, and talked to a couple different companies about making your house wheelchair friendly, but all of them were so exorbitantly expensive that after crunching the numbers with Yoongi and Namjoon’s help, it turned out cheaper to just do it yourself, and since Yoongi was also on paid leave for work with the audit continuing, he offered to help set up and install everything.
“I’m sure. I took a lot of woodshop and carpentry classes in high school. Ended up helping the teacher teach the class. And my dad taught me a lot of things as well. He had a construction company and during the summers I would help out on some of the sites for some cash.” Yoongi glanced at his watch. “The class finishes in forty minutes, then we can pick up Jin and Taehyung, head back to the house and get some work done before you have to go relieve Namjoon at the hospital. Even then, Hoseok said he could take the next shift because Theo said he wanted to do some school work.”
“I never thought I’d be grateful for extended paid vacation due to auditing that might put me out of a job,” You muttered, thinking about how crazy it would all be if you had been juggling work on top of all of the things going on.
Theo was paralyzed from the waist down, which meant he would be wheelchair bound, and which meant you had a lot of work to do in the house. You’d already rearranged his room to be more accessible for him, and you’d checked the height of the dining table with the chair and your neighbor, who actually installed tubs and showers for a living, basically gave you all of the bathroom things that would help Theo, and had them installed for you for free since you’d helped him figure out an accounting thing earlier that year that saved his company from hemorrhaging money. You’d found a sort of kitchen counter-like table that you had set up now that was at a good wheelchair height. But there were still things like ramps that needed to be put in and around the house, and things in his bedroom to help him get in and out of bed, and just…things to give him more independence as he got older. Yes, a lot of that would come in the form of physical therapy, but until then, you wanted to make your house as accessible as possible.
“Jin said the class was a joke. He’s been compiling more useful information from perusing the internet and different nursing books.” Yoongi grabbed different types and shapes of wood that made little sense to you, but you figured he knew what he was doing. “He’s practically written his own guide at this point and has been going through it with Taehyung. Jimin’s been helping them, too.”
“Have you heard about that town?” You asked.
He turned toward you and nodded slowly. “I have. Jin just about cried hearing that there was a town, or at least a company, that was trying to take care of the hybrids in it. These laws are ridiculous. No, they’re cruel. A death sentence. I’m glad someone found a way around it all.”
“What are you going to do if the company goes out of business?”
Yoongi sighed, leaning against the shelf. “I don’t know. Jimin’s mentioned maybe starting our own company, so that we could employ Jin, but none of us could come up with any ideas for the company.”
You nodded. “Well, if you do come up with one, let me know. I’m a good number cruncher.”
He chuckled. “I’ll keep that in mind. Alright, I think we just need some paint and some sand and we’ll be ready.”
“Paint and sand? Sand paper?”
“Nah, just sand.”
You followed after him, bewildered, but unable to find the words to ask what the sand was for.
“See, when I’m finishing the ramps, I’ll mix some sand into the paint for the tops of the ramps, and that will provide more grip for the wheels and for anyone who might be walking up the ramp as well. Less chance to slip and fall, but also still saving you money.”
You nodded, still a little lost, but trusting him anyway.
Jin and Taehyung were waiting on the bench outside the building, both talking animatedly, when you and Yoongi picked them up.
“This class is a joke,” Jin huffed. “We take the test tomorrow and we’ve learned nothing.”
“Except that the teacher doesn’t have any personal hygiene,” Taehyung added. “Hyung’s going to go over things that he saw in a nursing book with me instead. And Jimin’s going to bring some more books from the library when he gets out of work. I found more information about what might need doing from an article about trained service dogs.”
“Well, Theo will still have some independence, you know. So he won’t need as much as a service dog might provide, at least, not as much as far as we know. I’m still apprehensive about the other, other, other shoe dropping,” You muttered, rubbing your temples. “And at least it should be easy for you to get certified, even if that means you learn more at home. It will allow you to go to Theo’s school and such so it serves its purpose.”
“Yeah. I just…I think it’s a shame that this is all they’re teaching hybrids who are supposed to be helping people. I think we could do better,” Taehyung had a pout in his voice.
You opened your mouth, and closed it, turning slightly to look at Yoongi.
He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel, catching your look and nodding slightly.
That was definitely an idea.
“It couldn’t be that hard to teach us things like, how to lift an injured person, or how to help a blind person, or heck, what you need to know to help anyone. Why not teach hybrids sign language? I know it takes time to learn things like that, but come on! At least get us started, or connected to classes,” Jin ranted. “If a nurse can teach a parent how to lift their injured child to help them, why can’t hybrids be taught that? Most hybrids are stronger by nature! And we can provide more tangible companionship than dogs, who get twice the training we do! No, five times!”
“Did you want to attend the service dog training classes?” Yoongi asked, sounding serious.
That made Seokjin pause. “Wait, why?”
“Well, we could round out our company, and the world always needs more service animals and hybrids, plus then you’d have even more extensive training. Remember that abandoned building over on Fitzgerald road? It’s still in good condition and it’s probably big enough for multiple classes, and training. There’s probably more that we’ll have to look into, but getting certified might be a good first step.” Yoongi looked like he was already mentally crunching numbers.
You slowly started nodding. “Yeah. It would.”
Jin and Taehyung looked lost, but you weren’t really ready to expand as you started calculating an estimate of what it possibly could take to open a training center. Your savings would be shot when it came time to pay the medical bills in full.
Yoongi turned on music just as Taehyung started asking what the two of you had been talking about.
It appeared to be forgotten once at the house though.
By the end of the day, Yoongi had two ramps that were the perfect height and slope and fit over the steps beautifully. Only two more ramps were needed and he promised to have them done by the next day. Then the two of you were sitting with Jimin while the hybrids poured over a book Jimin had brought from the library.
“How much money would it cost to start up?” Jimin asked, looking at the list you and Yoongi had compiled after your research during lunch (you’d given Hoseok the go-ahead to take the next shift with Theo after a phone call with your baby that proved he was in good spirits and more than ready for some catch-up schoolwork).
You pushed the paper toward Jimin.
His eyes scanned it, then he leaned back with a “huh”.
“I can’t swing it with the medical bills,” You murmured, anxiously tapping the end of the pen on your hand.
“My parents want to pay for them. I say let them. And I can do this, like an investment,” Jimin said, shrugging. “Do it. I bet the shelters would love a way for more hybrids to be adopted, and it makes sense. We all still have our jobs, so it’s not like we’re going to risk too much right now. One of us will have to get certified, but I can do that since I’ve already taken some of the classes. And I bet we can work with some of the shelters. I think it’s feasible.”
Yoongi nodded. “I think so too, but Jimin, I can contribute to paying for it all.”
“Forget it, my parents settled their fortune on me after they got their heads out of their asses about Theo’s existence.” Jimin shrugged. “There was more to it than that, but after hours of arguing…let’s just say they’ll be quiet for now. I don’t promise there won’t be trouble in the future, but for now things should be okay. But back to business. Let’s start getting everything together, and working on whatever certifications we might need for this. If you guys want to contribute, you can do so in other ways, but for now it’s best if our money comes from a single source. You’re paying for the apartment right now, anyway, hyung. Think of it as the rent and groceries for the past four months.”
Yoongi was studying Jimin. “You caved and went to work with them, didn’t you? Is that where this job came from?”
“No, I negotiated and my job until I inherit is to manage updating our rental properties and everything that goes with them. It’s more basic than it sounds.” Jimin waved it away. “I’m happy with it, so I’m not complaining, and I can cover the start-up costs. I’ll probably want to work with all of you anyway, so we can just settle it with wages later. You guys do the brain-work, because it makes my head spin.”
“I don’t think I can let your parents pay for Theo. There are too many strings that could still be attached,” You said carefully.
“Look, I can’t explain everything right now, but the money they planned to use had been set aside for…my brother. Since my brother is dead, I convinced them it was only fair and right that his son inherit that. The eventual agreement was that it would be used to pay for his medical bills if he had any, and then college if he wanted to go. Otherwise he would inherit at thirty. There’s a lot more discussion they want to have. With a lawyer, and with you present, in regards to the money, but this was what we managed to come to for the time being. If you refuse, then I have to go back and argue with them for another three days. Please don’t make me argue with them for another three days.” Jimin flopped onto the table with a pout.
You weighed the options out, but kept staring at him. “The strings are attached to you, aren’t they?”
He sighed. “Why am I friends with people who are so suspicious? Yeah, sure. I mean, they made me promise that I would keep them updated on his health. Give them the highlights, like, “Oh, he won the school spelling be” or “he got straight A’s on his report card, again”. But I made them promise not to try and contact you or Theo except through me, and I have it in writing with several witnesses, including their lawyers and a lawyer friend of mine. Is that okay?”
You nodded slowly. “Okay. You can tell them they can pay his medical bills, only because our boss is an idiot that tried to embezzle and if he gets away with it me and Yoongi will be the first ones fired for reporting it.”
“Fair enough,” Jimin replied, smiling. “I’ll let them know. Now, any more objections?”
“I have an objection,” Taehyung huffed, folding his arms. “Don’t you think it’s a little rude to talk so secretively in front of other people?”
Seokjin looked nervous about Taehyung’s objection, fiddling with his flip phone.
Yoongi shrugged. “You two were reading, we were working.”
“Working?” Taehyung asked, coming over and plopping into the chair you pushed out for him.
Seokjin sat beside Jimin.
Yoongi started to talk, but the doorbell rang.
You paused, surprised, then hurried toward the door.
Namjoon held up the bags of food. “I brought dinner. Hoseok is on his way. The hospital had to do a security drill and wouldn’t let him back in because he went to the car to get his book while Theo was sleeping. He said he talked to Theo on the phone and Theo said it was okay for him to go. He still expects you later.”
You nodded. “Okay. Thanks for bringing food, I hadn’t even thought about it.”
“You aren’t going to close the door?”
“Hoseok’s pulling in, it’d be a little awkward,” You answered, glad when Jin came and took the bags from Namjoon because he looked about five seconds away from dropping all of the food onto the ground.
Hoseok hurried up to you. “I’m so—”
“Namjoon explained already. I’ll call Theo’s room and check on him, and I’ll head over as soon as we’re done eating. Come on, Yoongi was about to explain what our job-plan is for after we lose our current jobs.” You ushered him into the house and led the way back. “How’s your summer going so far?”
“I miss teaching already,” Hoseok complained.
After everyone had gotten a plate full of food, Yoongi went over the entire plan concisely. “If we can get this to work, then not only could you two work if you wanted, but we could also help other hybrids get adopted or help them get jobs when the laws change. Because there’s no way these laws are staying the same. It’s still going to be a process, but if we can get it to work….”
Namjoon nodded. “That would be cool. And I would totally be cool with teaching there too, especially in the summer.”
Hoseok nodded emphatically. “I mean, I wouldn’t want as crazy of a schedule as during the school year, but uh, income would be nice.”
“What, tutoring my baby so that he won’t be behind next school year isn’t enough for you?” You teased.
Hoseok rolled his eyes. “You’re paying me in edible food, remember?
“How did lessons go?” Taehyung asked, longing in his eyes.
Hoseok got quiet. “It…was slow. I can see his mind working, but he just can’t seem to find the answer even though I know he knows it and he knows that he knows it. I just think it will take a while for his brain to readjust. There’s a lot going on still, and he’s still getting it, it’s just taking him longer than it used to. He’ll get better at it as he gets physically stronger and things don’t tire him out as easily. He’s still a great speller. He spouts out words all the time.”
You nodded. “He’s been through a lot. He’s still bright and happy, and he’s…mentally active and able. That’s more than enough for me.”
Tae nodded, leaning to rest his head on your shoulder, gazing at nothing. Probably thinking about Theo.
You knew you were thinking about your son. You just wanted to bring him home.
Notes:
It has not been a year, but I'm still sorry it's taken so long. There's a lot of pressure where this story is concerned, so I've been careful as I'm writing it. Only a few more chapters, though!
Chapter Text
Theo was talking animatedly with Taehyung as he was wheeled toward the house, but he got quieter as you approached the front door to unlock it, looking down at the ramp beneath the wheels of the wheelchair.
Tae pushed him through the front door, his conversation also lulling.
Theo looked around, a bit of a smile on his face. “I get to stay now, right?”
You nodded, kissing his forehead. “You get to stay now and forever. We do have to go back for checkups and therapy but you’re home and you’re safe and I’m making roast beef and mashed potatoes.”
“Yummy! Can we go play, Dad?” Theo asked, brightening instantly and sort of bouncing in his wheelchair.
“Sure!” Tae pushed the wheelchair through at a speed that made you nervous. But you knew he would never purposely endanger Theo: Theo was his pup. That was evident in all of his actions, in his conversation, and in the effort he had made to get certified so that he could be there when Theo was released.
You went into the kitchen to baste your roast and then start peeling the mashed potatoes, trying to calm your heart because your baby was finally home again. Finally, finally home again, after weeks and months of too little patience and not enough answers, and a whole sea of tears. Therapy, rehab, tests, more tests, and after all of that, you had your baby home—less mobile than before, but still your baby.
You watched Theo playing on the bed with Tae, fighting the tears and hopelessly losing because he was back where he belonged.
Peace, comfort, and everything right in the world. Nothing intruding, just your little family.
So, of course, your phone rang.
You groaned and answered it. “Yoongi? Really? We just got Theo home.”
“It happened. We’re out of a job,” Yoongi answered, sighing. “They closed the company down.”
“Ugh. You could have texted me that,” You huffed, heading back to the kitchen. The two of you had basically considered everything going on and known that the company was going to collapse. You’d almost been told as much when the two of you went in to talk to an IRS agent who wanted you to walk her through your jobs and some files and go over the discrepancies that had led to the audits.
“Yeah, well, I also had to tell you that the paperwork came in the mail today, and we close on the building next week.”
“Okay, that was worth calling me,” You said, hopping onto the counter. “What’s next on the list?”
“Fixing the building? Getting the classes organized. You finish the certification class tomorrow?”
“Yeah, it’s kind of pathetic,” You said, shrugging. “Too easy. Let’s make our classes thorough, yeah?”
“Agreed. Jin is already writing a teaching plan. He’s got it halfway done—at least, I hope that’s the halfway point. Jungkook’s been helping, which makes hyung happy. And he’s finished the dog-training next week. The teacher was really excited to hear about what we’re doing, by the way, and gave Jin a bunch of things. She asked Jin to sit in on her next couple of classes as her helper.”
“That’s really great. Jimin?”
“He’s hitting garage sales to celebrate getting the building, hoping to find some cheap stuff to get us started. How’s Theo?”
“He’s fine. He’s bright and happy and playing with Taehyung right now. He’s taking things well and I’m making his favorite, and he’s looking forward to everyone coming over tomorrow.” You checked your timer, then sighed. “We’re totally doing pizza, though. I’m already exhausted.”
“Okay. I can pick it up on my way over.”
“Thanks. I’ve got to go. Need to get the rest of dinner started.”
“Tell Theo we’re looking forward to playing games with him tomorrow.”
“You got it. Eat well.”
“You too.”
You slipped off of the counter, and started putzing around the kitchen making some side dishes to go with dinner.
Tae came out. “How long until dinner?”
“Twenty minutes?”
“Better keep it warm, he fell asleep.”
You nodded, letting him stop you and hold you still. “He okay?”
“Very okay. He’s so happy he’s home that he just sort of passed out.” He kissed your cheek, then sighed. “I’m so happy too. I finally get to see him and hold him. I just want to hold him and cry.”
“I’ve almost been in tears for the entire day,” You told him. “I figure once he’s in bed for the night, I’ll cry my little heart out.”
“Can I cry with you?”
“Of course you can. I would never ask you not to cry when you wanted to.” You turned to meet his gaze, gently touching one of his furry ears. “It’s been hard for both of us. It’s still going to be hard. I’m terrified of the next few days.”
“Me too. Even if they told us what to expect and how to care for him, there’re still a lot of mistakes we’re going to make and that scares the fur off me.”
You nodded. “I wouldn’t be able to make it through all this if I hadn’t had you, you know.”
Taehyung nodded. “I know.”
“Mommy! Look! I made it in my chair and through the house!” Theo called, managing the last push through to the kitchen and raising his arms in victory.
“My baby! Look at you!” You hurried over bending to kiss his face all over. “Excellent job!”
“It’s exhau…it’s tiring,” Theo finished, nodding firmly to cover for his lost word.
“Exhausting, fatiguing, tiresome, or draining,” You supplied, sharing a smile with him and moving around to the back of the chair, bringing him over to the table. “What do you want to drink?”
“Water. It smells really good, mommy.” Theo smiled up at you.
You dropped a couple kisses on his face before going to get him his drink.
Tae was bringing over the side dishes. “You want to stay in your wheelchair, or you want to sit on the chair?”
“Chair, it’s a little too high,” Theo said, touching the table edge, which was practically to his chin.
Tae nodded and pulled the wheelchair back. “Arms around my neck.”
Theo did as he was told and the two of them moved him to the dining chair.
“You okay, baby?” You asked, noticing the way Theo was sort of fidgeting in the chair as you brought the roast over.
Theo looked up at you. “It’s still weird.”
“Your legs?” You guessed, resting your hand on his cheek.
He nodded, leaning into your touch. “I don’t like it.”
“I know. Neither do we. But…there are some things in life that are out of our control.” You pressed a kiss to his forehead. “And we’re going to be with you every moment of the way.”
Theo nodded, sighing. “I missed you, mommy.”
“I was with you,” You teased gently, but you understood exactly what he meant. It had always been the two of you, three once Tae had joined, and while he was in the hospital everything felt wrong. You didn’t get to hold him like you wanted, and it seemed like every time you had him in your arms and both of you were comfortable a nurse would come in to do something or other.
“But we weren’t home,” He said, watching Tae put the bowl of mashed potatoes down. “I really, really missed you daddy.”
Tae came over and nuzzled Theo. “I missed you more.”
“I missed you most,” Theo responded easily.
You hummed softly. “Come on. Time to eat, boys, before it gets cold.”
Theo hummed happily as you filled his plate, immediately trying to cut his own food first before ultimately letting Tae do it. “Too tired. Too hard.”
“That’s fine, kiddo,” Tae answered easily. “We all need help sometimes. And cutting things can be hard. At least you try.”
Theo nodded. “Mommy said that as long as I try, I can make it through the world.”
“Your mom is really smart,” Tae said, smiling at you. “She’s got a good history of trying her best at everything, including taking care of you and me. You chose her well.”
Theo laughed. “I didn’t choose her!”
“What?! Of course you did!” Tae objected, grinning himself. “Every kid chooses their parents!”
Theo and Tae launched into a playful debate and storytime about how every kid chooses their parent while you ate, quietly listening and just enjoying the fact that you were home.
Theo was home.
“Uncle Hobi said that he’d help me catch up to the rest of the class over the summer. I don’t want to do school work in the summer, but I don’t want to be behind. Kevin and Jun were close to being my friends, and they sent more drawings and letters than the other kids.”
“They wanted to visit, too, but they didn’t want to tire you out,” You told him. “We told them that they could come play with you once you were home.”
He grinned. “When? Tomorrow? Tuesday?”
“I’ll talk to their moms and arrange it all, and let you know. But, let’s have a couple days just our family.”
Theo nodded, but then looked back up. “Wait, does that include my uncles?”
“Of course. We’re working on projects together so they’re over quite a bit lately. And they’re coming over tomorrow, remember?” Tae nuzzled Theo, then added more potatoes to his plate. “Eat up.”
“More food?”
Tae nodded. “You need to eat well to recover.”
“Oh. Okay.” Theo started eating the extra food on his plate.
“Only eat until you’re full, though,” You instructed.
“Yes, mommy,” Theo answered, smiling at you.
Your baby was home.
——
“Woohoo!” Theo cheered as he rolled down the ramp at a speed carefully controlled by Jungkook.
You finished edging the window and set your brush aside.
The building for the training center was almost finished, and all of the licensing and training that you all needed, and the first classes were slated to start in three days.
“Over here is our obstacle course, which we think will help those training with us, as well as those in physical therapy, learn how to maneuver around things that they’ll come across on a regular day. As you can see, our happy tester is enjoying going down the ramp after he was working on trying to get up it on his own for a while.” Jimin high-fived Theo as he led the group past. “We’re also finishing painting, so try not to touch the walls unless you like paint on you.”
The people chuckled, fascinated by Jimin’s enthusiastic tour. He was showing some hybrid-shelter owners through the facility to sell them the idea of sending hybrids there for training to increase adoption rates. He’d given multiple tours so far, because he was by-far the best at it, aside from Taehyung, but Taehyung had the disadvantage of being a hybrid.
Hoseok was trailing the group, but split off to join you. “They’re practically eating out of his hand.”
“Good. We have bills coming eventually.”
“Yeah.” He sat down next to you. “But this place is amazing. You guys are going to do really well.”
“I hope so.”
Hoseok handed you the folder. “So, I looked things over.”
“Good news, then?” You asked sarcastically.
“Not bad news. He’s learning more slowly, but he’s still learning. As he grows stronger, I think he’ll be okay. He just gets tired so easily that I think it’s causing his trouble. So, once he gets stronger and isn’t as tired, I think he’ll catch up just fine. But for now, he’s going to stay just a little behind. I’m moving up with the class as part of the new program, so I can keep following his progress and helping him.” He patted your shoulder. “I already talked to the higher-ups about it. They agreed that it was important for him to be with his friends. Especially since we’re working on catching him up. And he’s still a bright kid, that catches on quickly. Tired equals distracted, distracted equals slower learning.”
“Thanks for the crayons, teach,” You answered dryly.
He grinned at you. “Hey, there’s a reason I teach kids.”
“Because you are one?”
He laughed and the two of you watched as Jungkook helped Theo work his way up the easiest ramp so he could go down the hardest again.
“He really likes this place. After we left yesterday, it was all he could talk about,” You told him, smiling as Theo cheered on his way down the ramp again.
“His friends are coming to play here, aren’t they?”
You nodded. “They’ll be here soon. Taehyung is waiting to show them in. Their mom’s were excited to hear that this was practically a playground, rainy days are hard.”
“You could market day-passes and make that one room into a playroom for kids, that’d help bring in more income. I know several sets of parents that would bring their younger kids in, especially on rainy days. And if hybrid rights ever get reestablished, you could make it hybrid friendly which would really help.”
Yoongi paused in the doorway and looked at you.
You looked back, then at Hoseok. “So, we told you you’re a shareholder, right?”
Hoseok nodded.
Yoongi pulled out a notebook and wrote the idea down. “I’ll start pricing things and we can discuss it.”
“Theo!”
You looked over as Kevin and Jun ran over.
“Hi!” Theo greeted them enthusiastically and they started talking.
Taehyung was leading in their mothers.
“I should go talk with them,” You excused yourself and headed over.
“Y/n, it’s so good to see you. Thanks for letting the kids play here, it looks great,” Jun’s mother (Debby?) said, sounding genuinely enthusiastic.
“And safe. Kevin has a habit of hitting his head on everything so I’m glad to see everything is padded. Lumps are easy, cuts are hard,” Kevin’s mother (Jamie?) added. “Plus the rain.”
You nodded. “They’re little balls of energy, but I’m really grateful for you two bringing them. Theo was so excited to hear he would get to see them.”
“Jun’s been asking about Theo almost every week. These past months must have been so hard. I don’t think I could have handled it.”
“I have a really good support system,” You answered easily, turning with them to watch the three boys playing, Jungkook keeping an eye on them to help if Theo got stuck.
The other two boys were being really thoughtful and kind and they saw the wheelchair and Theo being stuck in it as a challenge and a game, which would definitely help. They listened when Jungkook did have to help them and they already seemed to be having fun.
“Are you sure you don’t want us to hang around and keep track of them?” Kevin’s mom asked after giving you her husband’s number as well as Kevin’s backpack.
“We’d be happy to help,” Debby added.
You shook your head. “Go home, relax. Or clean, or whatever you need to get done. I’ve got several helpers on hand if I need them, including their favorite teachers. That is, as long as you’re okay with Jin and Taehyung helping out.”
“Of course, this whole law is ridiculous. It won’t last.” Debby waved a hand as if dismissing the law.
“Can’t last, more like. My favorite babysitter is a golden retriever hybrid, she’s been living in our basement ever since this happened. She was really excited to hear about this place, though, so I told her I would bring her once it was open.”
You smiled. “She’d be very welcome, and just let me know if she wants to take any of the classes.”
They nodded and left after telling their boys to behave and listen to you and the other adults.
You went into different rooms, double-checking the painting and making sure everything looked nice and correct.
Namjoon was sorting through the area rugs, placing them in order by thickness and type. This would make it easier to not only determine what carpets might be easier for people in wheelchairs, but help them and those helping them grow accustomed to the type of challenges that different carpets could present.
Yoongi was going through and making notes of different things that still needed to be finished, or other things that came to mind, as well as double checking some of the safety parameters.
Jimin was still talking with the people he was giving the tour to.
Hoseok was sorting through the spare office supplies that all of you had managed to scrounge up (a lot of yours came from your college years, like the dozen or so sticky note pads, the handful of highlighters, a plethora of paperclips and binder clips, push pins, pencils, pens, erasers, loose-leaf lined paper, binders, folders, and index cards—so many index cards), while keeping the kids in his sight should Tae or Jungkook get distracted.
And Seokjin was setting up the kitchen, which was going to be teaching cooking classes as part of companion training, but also used to show the difficulties a person in a wheelchair would face on one side of the kitchen while the other side was made for people in wheelchairs. He really liked the kitchen, and it was his pet project
Which meant you could go and look at the room that wasn’t being used yet.
Hoseok was right, it would make a really good room for kids playing. Something that would be easy to sanitize, but still allow for the kids to play. A slide would easily fit there, some rock wall-type of holds on the wall there….
You backed out of the room and stuck a sticky-note to the door, labeling it the Jungle room.
Yoongi joined you, giving you a questioning look.
“If we’re going to make a room for all kids to play in, we should have a theme for it. Kids like themes. Jungle is a good theme.”
He nodded. “That cafe I told you about, they said if we get busy enough, they’d love to partner with us and open in the cafeteria.”
“That’d be perfect. For now we’re just going to have to offer snacks by the front desk, though.”
“Jimin is on the phone with the local paper.”
You slowly turned toward him again. “What?”
He nodded. “They called, wanting to talk to someone about this place and Jimin saw me starting to stumble so I pretended I was just an assistant and told them I was handing the phone over to one of the founding members. He’s good at the talking thing. Between him, Jimin, and Tae, we should never need to talk on the phone.”
“I’ll believe that when I see it,” You answered, hurrying to find Jimin because you wanted to know how the interview went.
“Yes, thank you so much for your inquiries. You have a nice day as well.” Jimin hung up, and grinned at you. “Well, we’re definitely getting some attention!”
“What did they ask? What did you say?”
“Well, they asked why we started this, when we were opening, what we were offering—I added on hybrid companion training for the elderly, but I didn’t think you two would mind—and I gave them the answers, I didn’t divulge first names or anything. I used strictly last names, because even that lends us more anonymity and autonomy. I told them we wanted to help our community and those who were currently suffering—I even added that our training areas worked great for kids playing when it was raining outside because they could hear the boys laughing. They asked if we had considered opening it as a playground for the kids as well when it wasn’t being used for training and I answered yes—but I also added that we’d need another permit or two that we haven’t filed for yet. We have considered that, right?”
“We have, actually, we were talking about turning one of the rooms into a kids playroom specifically. Then if we have hybrids who have kids, the kids can play while their parents are in classes,” Yoongi said, definitely adding that to his notebook, as well as the elderly thing. “This is going to be a life-long project, isn’t it?”
“If we’re lucky,” Jimin answered cheerfully.
You left Yoongi grumbling to go check on the boys, noticing that Theo wasn’t playing as much, but he was still laughing with them and apparently they were rescuing him from pirates or something.
Taehyung wrapped an arm around your waist. “You know…I’m really proud of you.”
You relaxed into his hold, resting your head on his shoulder. “I’m really happy Theo chose you as his father.”
“I’m really happy you let him,” He whispered, then tilted your chin up to gaze into your eyes for a moment.
Then he leaned in and kissed you, softly and gently, a silent promise for forever.
“I knew it!” Theo yelled happily, definitely staring at you two when you looked over. “YES!”
“Whoops,” You whispered, trying not to laugh. It seemed an age ago that you told Theo not to expect the two of you fall in love. Told him he could call Taehyung his father if he really wanted to.
An age since Taehyung first kissed you.
A lifetime since you told Theo he could adopt a hybrid.
Taehyung laughed and kissed you again. “Thank you for my family.”
“Does that mean you don’t want more pups?” You asked cheekily.
He shrugged. “I’m satisfied with whatever I get in life. If that’s more kids, then I’m not going to complain. But Theo’s enough for me.”
You kissed his cheek and rested in his arms, knowing everything in your future was going to be worth the trials. But he was a natural at helping you through it.
You couldn’t ask for anything better than this.
