Work Text:
Stars twinkled bright in ruby eyes as they gazed into the depths of the night.
It was quite a wonder how life around Eijirou seemed to just go on. There were millions of lives being lived, millions of lives lost, society constantly trying hard to achieve bigger and better and faster.
Staring into the night sky made him feel a little small, a little dim.
It was dizzying and dangerous, teetering on the edge of these self deprecating thoughts. It would be all too easy to swan dive off the edge gracefully, only to crash and burn, entrapped in the downward spiral of depression and despair.
The possibility alone was enough to bring back his jet black roots, thick locks dangling shiny and limp swaying eye to eye.
Eijirou swallowed thickly.
He had to remind himself things were different now. He had to remember he has people to live for, goals to attain. He got into Yuei for crying out loud!
but still
the bright flickering of the stars, the silver halo of moonlight resting between buildings and outlining his figure , the crisp night air hitting the back of his neck
although it was peaceful, it was hard to ignore the idea of life moving on without him.
It was time to face the facts, even stars don’t shine bright enough. And to himself, Eijirou couldn’t begin to measure up with the celestial beings.
With stiff palms pressed into his eye sockets, Eijirou groaned. This wasn’t how he was supposed to spend his evening.
“Oi sh**ty hair”
crimson eyes met his under the dark sky
”o-oh hey Bakubro! What’re you up to?” His voice felt distant and weird escaping his throat, like he hadn’t spoken in ages.
“I could ask you the same thing weirdo.” The look in Bakugous eyes teetered on skepticism “why’re you just sighing into your arms like some damsel in distress?” His words seem harsh, but to Kirishimas ears he could feel the concern between the syllables. Bakugou was worried
”you know.. just. Overwhelmed with school work!” He smiled the biggest he could, nervously lacing his fingers through the limp spikes laying on this neck.
“We don’t even have that much idiot. Do you need more tutoring or what??” This time Bakugou seemed slightly amused along with his naturally angry scowl.
“ I- no. I’ll be fine” dismissing Bakugous teasing, Eijirou let out a shaky breath into the night air. It curled up in a soft white explosion never to be seen again. Eijirou couldn’t help but think of himself that way. Noticeable for a second, but not enough for anyone to question once you’re gone.
Absent mindedly Eijirou brought an open palm to his forehead. He wants his brain to turn off for once. It was starting to hurt, warring between determination and despair left him feeling emotionally drained and empty. He no longer had the energy to hide the existential crisis brewing in his core
”Kirishima.” His name on Bakugous tongue felt disturbing.
Eijirous soft sad eyes gazed upon Bakugous and for the first time that night, Bakugou was able to see him, naked and vulnerable, Bakugou could see right through him
“Do you want to talk about it?”
He was taken aback by Bakugous voice. There was absolutely no rage, no irritation, just pure concern.
Every fiber of his being was screaming to open the floodgates. To release all the bottled up sadness that had been manifest over the years but.
“Not really” his voice was small and his eyes darted to the city scape. He just wasn’t ready
No more words were exchanged that night.
But Bakugou found it in himself to scale the gap between their balconies and rest folded arms inches away from Eijirou.
So they stood there. Staring once again at the night sky. Once again feeling small. But maybe not quite as lonely.
And when Bakugou nugded Eijirou with his elbow and managed a soft smile (more like a not scowl) Eijirou thought maybe he’d be comfortable opening the gates one day.
Maybe he’d learn to be okay with being less than a star.
