Sometimes out in the hall, I hear some cries.
It’s of my beloved.
She cries at night.
Alone at night.
She thinks I’m asleep because we drift off to sleep together.
And I am sleeping because her spell is so strong.
But the lost of her touch weakens the magic.
I pretend to be asleep even though I know she cries.
Because she cries because of me.
The blood on my hands to unite this country is too heavy for her.
Or is it the fact that it’s my hands that gets more stained?
That my heart gets colder with every kill?
That my eyes don’t look the same every time I return?
When she comes back she snuggles closer.
The cries that I hear is not heard during the day.
She smiles.
She smiles so brightly I’m afraid it’s painful for her.
But still she smiles, and for me.
She cares, for me.
She loves, only me.
Yet she hides her tears from me.
Another war. More blood. Another step closer to my dream.
This time I can’t let her hide.
She leaves my side at night.
This time I catch her hand.
She gasps and tries to hide her eyes.
This time I don’t let her hide.
The tears touch my hands as they run down her cheeks.
What is it I feel?
Is it what she calls pain? Sorrow?
I wipe the tears and draw her near.
This time we’ll share the pain.
