Work Text:
It was Valentine's Day. A day to express ones love and devotion to their partner. The chance to go over the top and spoil the person you love with gifts, flowers, chocolates, and love notes. Most couples went for romantic evening strolls after partaking in decadent and lavish meals. Evenings concluded in bedrooms where words of affirmation were ghosted across waiting lips.
Of course, Yagi and Aizawa were not like most other couples. Yagi wanted to shower his lover with dozens of dahlias, imported wines, and hundreds of little romantic notes. Aizawa had firmly told him no.
“Yagi. I don't want you to waste your time and energy into this frivolous holiday.” Aizawa had said a week or so before.
“But it’s our first Valentines Day and I have never got to celebrate one before.” Yagi pouted, pulling Aizawa's hands into his own, giving them a gentle squeeze. “Come on, kitten. Please?”
Aizawa squeezed his hands back before shaking his head. “Absolutely not. It is a stupid, corporate holiday manufactured for hopeless romantics to overspend money.”
“Hopeless romantic? I will have you know I am a hopeful romantic, dear.” Yagi chuckled a little as Aizawa fought back a smile cracking across his lips.
“I have to work that night anyways. Valentine's day is a really busy time for me. Let's just go on a date the weekend after.”
Yagi frowned. “Can I at least stay at your apartment so I can see you when you get home?”
Aizawa sighed. “Fine. Sure. But don't you fall asleep in that disastrous thing you call an armchair. I bought an actual bed so you better use it.”
And now here Yagi was sitting in his favorite armchair, half asleep as the digital clock in the room beeped indicating it was now ten o'clock. In his lap was a little gift bag filled with a dozen heart shaped macarons from the best French bakery in all of Japan. Although he promised to not go over the top, he couldn't help himself when he saw these. A small gift. A tiny gesture. He reasoned with himself that at least he didn't go as crazy as he had wanted and that Aizawa could deal with just this one tiny Valentine.
Yagi stretched his arms high above his head and yawned. He knew he needed to go to bed in the actual bed in Aizawa's apartment, but this chair was so comfortable.
Before he could totally doze off, he heard the pitter patter of footsteps making their way towards the apartment. ‘Isn't it a little bit early for Aizawa to be coming home? Usually his shifts last until two.’
“Yo, All M- I mean Yagi-san. Come open the door, dude.” Hizashi called out from the other side of the door.
Yagi furrowed his brow. ‘Why is he here?’ Taking his gift into his hands, he stood up and made his way to the door.
“Mic, what on Earth are you doing here.” He asked as he opened the door with his free hand. His eyes went wide and he let out an audible gasp. There, crowded into the little corridor leading to Aizawa's apartment stood all of class 1-A, most of the faculty, and many of Yagi's other close friends including Dave. All of them were beaming with big smiles on their faces as they greeted him.
The little bag of macrons he bought began to fall from his grasp. Before it hit the ground, Mic reached out and caught it. “Whoa, dude. Don't wanna lose these. How ‘bout I keep a hold of'em for ya.”
Yagi nodded slowly, his mouth still agape as he stared at the crowd before him. He slowly stepped out of the apartment, bunny slippers on his feet and still clothed in his All Might pajama set. “What are you all doing here?”
“Follow the rose petals and find out.” Dave smiled, pointing down to the petals at Yagi's feet leading down the stars and towards the lobby of the apartment complex.
Yagi shuffled his feet for a moment, a bit nervous to move until Bakugou scoffed and moved behind him, giving him a firm push forward. “Move it, old man. You dont wanna keep Eraser waiting do you?”
‘Eraser? What is Aizawa planning?’ The guests, the rose petals. All of this was way over the top for Aizawa. So over the top it was almost at his own levels of extravagance.
Yagi did as he was instructed though and made his way down the rose covered path. He made sure to shake every single one of their guests hands as he went though, thanking each for taking a break from their Valentine's day plans to come for “whatever this is.”
As he rounded the final corner after the final step, his friends and students following close behind, he paused, clutching his hand to his heart. Standing in the middle of the lobby, dressed in a finely tailored black suit, hair swept into a ponytail, stood the love of his life, Aizawa. There were rose petals all around him and soft instrumental music played through a boombox near Aizawa's feet.
The younger man held out of his hands in his direction. “Yagi, please come here.”
“Aizawa,” Yagi said as he drew closer, “what is all this? What is going on?”
Aizawa waited until Yagi was closer before exclaiming, “Happy Valentines day, Yagi.” The younger man took Yagi's hand in his own and placed a soft kiss on top of it.
Yagi's heart began to race in his chest from the gentleness of Aizawa's touch, but he didn't pull away. Instead, he said the first thing which came to his mind. “Babe...I am in pajamas in the lobby of your apartment and all I got you for Valentine's day is cookies which almost got smashed on the ground.”
Aizawa stifled back a laugh. “Really, pajamas. That is your big concern? If that is the case, than I think you look just perfect.”
“And I rescued the cookies!” Hizashi called out, holding the little bag up proudly.
Before Yagi could say anything more, Aizawa snaked his arms around his waist and stood on the tips of his toes in order to place a chaste kiss against his lips. Yagi responded jy kissing him back. As Aizawa put his feet back down, Yagi wrapped loose arms around Aizawa's shoulders, his fingers intertwined. The two stood there for a moment in silence. A faint blush formed on Yagi's cheeks as he tried to ignore all the attention focused in the two of them right now.
Many of their students had their phones out, clearly recording what was going on. Mic and Dave were handing tissues over to Midnight who had already begun crying and remarking how romantic this whole thing.
“Yagi,” Aizawa began and Yagi turned his attention fully over to him. They gazed into eachothers eyes and Yagi noticed a nervous kind of smile crossing his lovers lips. “I am not good with these kinds of things.”
“What? Holding me in your arms in front of all the people we know? You seen pretty good at it to me.”
“Don't tease me right now, please. I am really nervous.” Aizawa said, his serious expression of making Yagi's heart skip a beat.
“Alright, sweetheart. I am sorry. Go on.”
Aizawa cleared his throat. “Yagi, I am not one for sentimental things. I find all this,” he looked around at all the decorations around them, “to be excessive.”
“More my style than yours I think.”
Aizawa nodded and continued. “Exactly. I am a man of few pleasures, and one who doesn't easily drop my guard. I trust few, and love even fewer. I like knowing the answers to things. Efficiency, simplicity, rationality. I have lived most of my life by those three guiding principles. Or rather, I lived by them until All Might crashed into my classroom, flipping over the perfectly put together puzzle of my life.”
“You could say I Texas smashed it, right?”
Aizawa rolled his eyes, knowing full well that Yagi used humor to defuse a little of the the nerves welling up inside himself.
“Sunflower,” Aizawa pouted, “let me finish.”
Yagi nodded and stammered out another apology.
“Yagi Toshinori, All Might. Sunflower. You exchanged my efficiency for excitement. You switched my simplicity for the serenity of mornings held in your embrace. You replaced rationality with romance. Each little gesture, even when it drove me mad, made me a better man than I was before I knew you. Made me fall madly, desperately, and absolutely in love with you.”
The room around them fell silent, but the frenetic excited energy was palpable. “
“I love you too, kitten.”
Aizawa vlinked for a moment before his nervous smile melted into one of the most sincere smiles of adoration Yagi had even seen. One that was meant only for him. One that could only be for him.
Yagi couldn't hold back his emotions any longer. He started to sob at the sweetness of Aizawa's words, his hot tears rolling down his face. The crowd around them also seemed to be touched with Kirishima and Midoriya in particular crying loudly.
Aizawa slid his arms back and away from Yagi's body and started to kneel. Yagi held in a breath. ‘Oh. This is happening.’
Aizawa produced a small black box from his pocket. He opened the box and inside Yagi saw a rose gold band with a single yellow diamond chip placed right into the center. It sparkled underneath the fluorescent lighting.
Aizawa reached out a shaking hand towards Yagi, pulling his hand close. “Yagi Toshinori, love of my life, my sweet sunflower. It has been an honor to be the man you allowed into your life and into your heart. And I want to spend every last second of the rest of that life with you. Will you marry me?”
Yagi nodded, biting his lip as more fresh tears falling from his eyes. “Yes. Yes. A million times yes.” Yagi didn't even give Aizawa a chance to put the ring on his fingers. He pulled Aizawa up to his feet by the suits lapel and leaned down, pressing his lips against his lovers in a deep kiss. Aizawa let out a soft moan as Yagi pressed their bodies together in his strong embrace.
As their lips parted, Yagi joyfulled hoisted Aizawa high into the air and spun them around before setting his lover back onto his feet. “Yagi?”
“Yes Aizawa?”
Aizawa held out the little black box with the ring still inside. “Do you maybe wanna put this thing on now?”
Yagi let out a hardy laugh. “Oh! Sorry. I got caught up in the moment.” He held out his hand and Aizawa slipped the ring on. It fit perfectly.
“My best friend is getting marrrrriiiieeeeddd!” Hizashi shouted.
“Congratulations, All Might!” Midoriya smiled, waving his arms excitedly in the air.
“Aizawa-sensei! That proposal was so perfect.” Mina said with a romantic sigh.
Class 1-A and all their friends began to cheer as they moved in on the couple. The men started getting hugs and pats on the back. Yagi responded in kind, noticing in the corner of his eye as Aizawa shrunk a little in on himself with a blush on his cheeks.
“Thank you.” The poor man muttered over and over again. Although he didn't look it, Yagi could tell Aizawa as sincerely grateful for everyone there.
Later that night, well after everyone had left and the two of them had melted into one across almost every available surface of the apartment, Yagi wrapped an around Aizawa's waist, his chest to his lovers back, skin touching skin. “Shouta.” he purred against Aizawa's ear.
Aizawa tilted his head back. “Mmm?”
“Thank you for giving me the best first Valentine's day. I know that must have been hard for you to plan.”
Aizawa shook his head slightly. “Wasn't hard to plan. I just tried to think how a big, blonde, excessive man would do it and did that.”
The room went quiet save the sounds of their breathes. A few minutes passed and Yagi felt sleep begin to take him over. “Aizawa, I love you.”
“I love you too, future husband.”
Future husband. Yagi liked the sound of that.
